It shouldn’t be any sur- prise that it is also the day on which the most food is consumed in the country! But how did it all begin? Come along, as we journey into the “Behind the Scenes Making of American Thanksgiving”! The “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated in 1621 by about 53 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians, led by their chief Massasoit, at Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. The feast lasted three days, and was in celebration of a successful growing season. Numerous Thanksgiving feasts were cele- brated throughout the ensuing years, but with no regularity or uniformity. On October 3, 1789, George Washington declared the first Thanksgiving Day officially designated by the national government. In his proclamation, he called for “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God”. In 1827, magazine editor and writer of the nursery rhyme, “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, Sarah Josepha Hale, launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. In 1863, at the height of the Civil War, her quest was realized as Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on the final Thursday of November; however in 1941, Thanksgiving was officially desig- nated as the fourth Thursday in November. On November 19, 1963, John F. Kennedy became the first President to spare the life of a turkey, which has now evolved into the tradition of “Turkey Pardoning”, carried on by all successive Presidents. As Catholics, each time we receive the Eucharist we partake in thanksgiving of the ultimate sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour, as he gave His own life so that we might live eternally.

Your generosity is exceptional and part of who you are as beloved Disciples ofChrist.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESSHoly Family is indeed a family. We care for each other and reach out to the members ofour family and all others we can help. Part of our outreach has been developing anEmergency Preparedness Committee to help parishioners prepare for natural disasterssuch as earthquakes, fires and storms. Remember, we are told that it is only a matter oftime before we have another very large earthquake or other disaster so the very best thingwe can do is to make every effort to be prepared. Please contact Marc Ulrich [email protected] if you have further questions.

Did You Know? How to communicate with those showing inappropriate behavior How should you communicate your concerns to someone who may be behaving inappro-priately with children? The “I” message is a simple way to reframe what you want to say sothat the listener hears you speak of your feelings and concerns rather than hearing a com-plaint against themselves. The “I” message, simply diagrammed is: “I feel” (feeling) when(situation) because (reason). For example, you can say: “I feel anxious when you drive achild home alone after religious education classes because that could put you or the childin a potentially risky situation.” It is a much more constructive approach than saying: “Youshouldn’t be driving children home alone because it is against the rules and puts them indanger.”

LITURGY MATTERSThe Fourth Session, September to December 1965On September 14, 1965 the fourth session of Vatican II opens. Pope Paul presides at asimple ceremony, lacking the pomp of previous openings. In the homily, he avoids dis-cussion on the issues before the Council and calls only for charity in dealing with oneanother. He also announces his intention to visit the United Nations in the fall. And thebest news of all, he announces his intention to establish a Synod of Bishops to advisehim. (The formation of such a group had been called for since the beginning of theCouncil and was part of the movement toward collegiality among bishops.)On September 15, Pope Paul attends the first working meeting of the fourth session. While there, the motu proprio entitled Postolica Sollocitudo is read, actually establishingSynod of Bishops promised only the day before. No one had expected such a rapidaction. Also on this day, the document on religious liberty, as promised, is reintroducedfor discussion. The scope of the document, is made clear by Bishop to Smedt(Belgium), is to address the question of “the human and civil rights of liberty on religiousmatters.” The document defends the place of conscious in such matters, as well as thenotion that doctrine develops over time. The majority generally favor the revised docu-ment, citing the growing worldwide movement towards personal independence andcivil liberty, separating civil from religious institutions. The minority caution against sepa-rating state and church, citing the Italian experience, one Spanish Cardinal (Arriba) saysthat only the Catholic Church has the right to preach the gospel. Therefore, he argues, others who want to seek converts in Catholic countries must be suppressed, even bythe state. Cardinal Ottaviani declares that only the Catholic Church has a true, natural, and objective right to liberty. The attitude of the minority is in direct contradiction to thespirit of the document on religious liberty. Those who oppose the document fear it will compromise the claim of the CatholicChurch to be the one true church while others fear losing a person’s right to religiousfreedom on the dignity of the moment. In general, American prelates, coming fromtheir long tradition of religious tolerance in the United States, jubilantly hailed the docu-ment. Bishops from heavily Catholic countries tend to oppose it, along with the curialminority. Bishop from countries where the church is undergoing persecution stronglyfavor it, including Cardinal Wojtyla of Kraków. Who eventually was chosen as PopeJohn Paul II. Despite the many speeches in favor, it seems that this declaration is run-ning into trouble and might not come to a general vote in the Council.

ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTRYHoly Family’s neighboring city of Pasadenahas a goal of becoming a zero-waste com-munity. The Zero Waste Pasadena 2040campaign aims to drastically reduce theamount of trash sent to landfills by virtuallyevery waste producer in the community. Inreality, “zero waste” doesn’t always translateto absolutely no waste, according to a 2011report in the “Wall Street Journal, whichmarks success at 90 percent diversion orhigher. According to Pasadena’sDepartment of Public Works, the benefits ofa zero-waste objective are plentiful. Not onlywill the initiative help shape a healthier envi-ronment and save useful materials from lan-guishing in landfills, but it may even boosthiring in the recycling and manufacturingindustries. For Catholics, the importance of suchefforts was made plain at Pope Francis’installation Mass when he said, “The voca-tion of being a protector is not just some-thing involving us Christians alone; it alsohas a prior dimension which is simplyhuman, involving everyone. It means pro-tecting all creation, the beauty of the creat-ed world, as the Book of Genesis tells usand as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. Itmeans respecting each of God’s creaturesand respecting the environment in which welive.”Also, visit us on the Holy Family website atwww.holyfamily.org/environmental-ministry/.The ministry meets on the third Thursday ofeach month at 7 p.m. in the PastoralCenter. New members are welcome.Contact Carol Polanskey at (626) 398-4262or [email protected] many are your works, Lord! In wisdomyou made them all; the earth is full of yourcreatures. MISSION HAITIThe Quandary

Every day Fr. Tom faces a quandary.

In the early morning when he leaves hisheadquarters to go to celebrate Eucharistwith the Sisters, he lives his quandary. Towalk out the gate, or not? Outside thegate a group of young men, unemployedand desperate for work, accost him.

“Pere Tom, a job!!!” “Pere Tom, why don'tyou hire me?” “Pere Tom, when are yougoing to hire me?” “Pere Tom, if you don't hire ...”

As the young men grow more and more desperate, the more fierce their demandsbecome. And the more they border on violent.

Fr. Tom thinks to himself, “If only I had more jobs. I just can't hire everybody!”

Imagine having to confront such a group every morning when you walk out of yourhouse to your job, or, as is the case with Fr. Tom, to reach out to help as many as hecan. A fearful quandary.

Fr. Tom says only his prayer life enables him to face his daily quandary and still walkout the gate with a smile. Please join us in our prayer that he will always be safe.

Bring bread, wine or some other part of your thanksgiving meal and join in the entrance procession. Designate one member of your family to carry up your food and place it before the altar. Gather on the front steps before Mass.

Support the St. Vincent de Paul Conference The collection on Thanksgiving day supports the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at Holy Family whose main function is to help those in need. While this ministry gives priority to our own parish people, it does not hesitate to reach out to serve surrounding areas.

Continue celebrating the day. Perhaps you would like to use this prayer

Lord, we thank you for the goodness of our people And for the spirit of justice that fills this nation. We thank you for the beauty and fullness of land and the challenge of the cities. We thank you for our work and our rest, For one another, and for our home We thank you Lord:

(Pause for other prayers of thanksgiving.)

For all that we have spoken and for all that we keep in our hearts, accept our thanksgiving on this day.

We pray and give thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

CALL TO PRAYERBegin by calling upon God: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolySpirit, Amen. Let us pause for a moment, and listen attentively to this week’spassage.

THE WORD OF GODLuke 35-43 The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, “He saved others, let himsave himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God.”Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine theycalled out, “If you are King of the Jews, save yourself.” Above him there wasan inscription that read, “This is the King of the Jews.”Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, “Are you not theChrist? Save yourself and us.” The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply,“Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we receivedcorresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.”Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

FAITH SHARINGChildren: Describe a time when someone you cared for hurt you.Teens: What do you think was most difficult about Jesus’ crucifixion?Adults: In today’s Gospel, we hear that the sign above Jesus’ head read “King of theJews.” If you could replace that sign, what would you write? And why?In grace: It has been said that Jesus’ real power is of love, not armies. What doesthat say about the Holy Family Community?

IN THE SPOTLIGHTGRACE, GRATITUDE, AND GENEROSITYBill Chapman officially registered as a parishioner atHoly Family in 1997, seeking to put down roots in aCatholic parish. He chose Holy Family, in part, because his grandparents were active parishionersin the 40s, 50s and 60s and his dad attended HolyFamily grade school. Bill immediately took part in“ReMembering Church” because, though he neverreally left the church, he wanted to get even closerto it. Bill called Holy Family “home”, but it took 10years for him to get more involved. In Sept. 2009Holy Family launched the Gay and Lesbian Ministry.Through this Ministry Bill finally felt “fully welcomedand accepted for who I was as God’s child, forhow he created me and for how he created me to be in his church. Through thatMinistry I came to understand that I’m not different from anyone else, that I am wel-come at the table and have been asked to be part of the church, not only the thrivingchurch that is Holy Family, but the greater Catholic church community. It opened upa new place in my heart, my self-acceptance blossomed, I felt like I got onto the freeway express lane, and there is no getting off.”In 2010 Bill met with Cambria Smith and Dawn Ponnet, who invited him to be part ofthe Evangelization Team and a Co-Chair for the very 1st Divine Dinner. Through hisinvolvement in different ministries, Bill realized that he is as much a part of the parishcommunity as anyone, “it absolutely contributed to my feelings of being loved by Godand developing self worth as a child of God. I could do good work in God’s church asa full-fledged member of the community.” Two years ago, Cambria nominated Bill for Regional Pastoral Council of the SanGabriel Region and he has now been invited to serve on the Archdiocesan PastoralCouncil. For the past year and a half, Bill has served on the Archdiocesan PastoralMinistry for Lesbian and Gay people (started by Cardinal Mahoney in 1986). Bill isnow a crucial part of the Church Environment Ministry and Ignation faith sharinggroups. But he says that getting involved with Holy Family’s Living Your Gifts, was ahuge turning point for him in seeing how he could share his gifts. “You can’t overesti-mate the slow and steady work of God, things unfold that bring us to a place wherewe’re ready and able to go forward. In 2009 God said, ‘ okay – here you go – youare ready to help build my church.’”
