Social & Community Services, Tourism & Hospitality AwardS CAULFIELD ARTS CENTRE - 13 MAY 1998
This was the first time the social and community
services courses offered at Waverley and ITS,
and the tourism and hospitality courses offered
by CLP, combined to hold an awards night. The
Caulfield Arts Centre is a fitting venue to
conduct a formal presentation for the large
number of graduands. The hall was tastefully
decorated, thanks to the horticulture
department, who provided a superb garden
display on the stage. Henry Pook was the Master
of Ceremonies for the evening, and Bruce
Mackenzie introduced the lnstitute's inaugural
awards festival, noting the theme of saluting
achievement.
There were two industry guest speakers: Jenny
Balshaw, Human Resources Manager,Yooralla
Society, and Colette O'Donoghue, Victorian
President, Womens' Australian Travel League.
Jenny Balshaw's speech was directed at graduates
of the social and community services courses.
She recalled at time, not too long ago, when the
industry was not seen as a "real" one with
clearly identified skills and objectives. Much has
changed since then, formal training courses such
as those offered by Holmesglen have contributed
to establishing these much needed skills and
objectives. She commended the graduates on
the roles they had chosen to take, saying that it
was a key one. Jenny noted that Holmesglen,
together with industry, had been a pioneer in the
development of these courses. Jenny
encouraged graduates to continue to learn,
noting that change is constant and rapid in this
field. She urged them to keep abreast of new
ideas, the programs offered by organisations and
the policy changes, and to become valued
members in the workplace.
Colette O'Donoghue addressed the tourism
students directly, saying that the tourism industry
offered many challenges and opportunities for
new graduates, especially in the light of the new
technologies impacting on this industry. The
Internet is opening up a new distribution channel
for the travel industry and requires staff who are
highly trained in these areas, but personal service
would always be the most important aspect of
the tourism industry. She encouraged students
to focus on the development of the customer
service skills in this people-focused industry.

Painting & Decorating Awards CONFERENCE CENTRE - 19 MAY 1998
The Painting and Decorating Awards Presentation held in the Conference
Centre was a well organised event, which received excellent industry support.
Peter Griffin, Head of Department, was justifiably proud of the substantial
prizes which had been sponsored by industry for each of the thirteen award
winners. The department has an excellent relationship with industry: two paint
companies offered to be the major sponsor!
Apprentices and their employers came from Melbourne and all over the state
to participate in the presentation. Guest speaker for the evening was Joe
Griffin.Assistant Director, Policy & Training, Housing Industry Association. Joe
noted that the presentation was a special occasion for all those who had
excelled, and a celebration for parents, friends and partners of the award
winners. He encouraged the graduates to realise that their learning had only
just begun, and to understand and recognise when informal opportunities came
their way. One way for them to continue to learn was to consciously ask
themselves "What have I learned today?".This practice would develop an
ability to think critically about what they had learned informally each day.
Joe advised the newly qualified tradespeople to keep in contact with their
industry association and consider small business training, as these skills are vital
for those who will eventually start their own businesses.
Peter Griffin also took the opportunity to farewell Joy Lee, who has worked at
Holmesglen for almost I I years.

Leonie Millar addressed the full auditorium of the Waverley Campus as she
provided background on the lnstitute's firstAwards Festival. Unlike all the
other awards presentations, the horticulture awards presentation is held
during the afternoon. Widespread industry support was forthcoming for the
awards.
A spectacular horticulture display decorated the auditorium for the function.
Following the presentations, a wonderful array of finger foods, prepared by
students taking the Certificate II in Hospitality, was served.
The guest speaker was Gordon Griffin, Training Development and
Promotions, Rural Skills Australia. Gordon stressed the importance of
training for workers in the horticulture industry. He said that traineeships
through his organisation had increased from I 00 in 1994 to 4,000 in 1998
(800 of these are in Victoria). He said that while training is now being
delivered on the job, the value of teamwork and social interaction for rural
workers could not be underestimated, and TAFE provided these skills for
students.
The Waverley campus acknowledged the contribution of employers by
awarding four Employer of the Year Awards. These went to Link Employment
& Training, TGA Australia, Muirfield Turf and Grandview Landscapes.

Hecke4 ]eckel & Furbs Show
Holmesglen saw the end of a tradition with the retirement of Carpentry and
Joinery icons Eric Furby, Keith Berryman and Jim Ducrow.
Between them, the three have spent over 40 years at Holmesglen, playing an
integral part to the development of apprenticeship training in Victoria, which has
seen Holmesglen become a leading training provider in apprenticeship training.
A spectacular farewell was organised by their peers on the night ofThursday 28
May, and entitled 'The Heckle,Jeckle and Furbs Show". The Building Three Barn
was transformed into an impressive studio for the Footy Show-like production.
Staff had gone to extraordinary lengths in reconstructing the Footy Show set with
spot lights, grand stand, meal area and even a spot for "Trevor Marmalade". The
talents of Media Services were put to good use in setting up, with a large video
screen, audience applause lights and telephone/audio hook up.
Three segments were staged around the anecdotes of Eric, Jim and Keith, with Ron
"Eddie" Wiggins and Tim "Sammy" Hogan hosting the night, and panel members
each firing questions at the three.
The audience were treated to tales of all three ex-Richmond Tech instructors, with
Eric's shocking driving and snooker skills, Jim's love of Richmond Football Club, and
Keith's inability to keep score during golf, as well as reports from their closest
mates outside work. Media also made it possible for Eric to speak to his first
employer in Wales, Frank King, via a crossover.
Former Head of Centre, Ken Griska, on behalf of the Institute, presented the
threesome with golfing gifts to use in their retirement,
The three were unanimous in their praise of the Institute and their fellow staff
members for their support throughout the years. It was clear that from the effort
put into the production that all three will be sadly missed by the Centre and the
Institute.
Congratulations must go to Carpentry and Joinery, Floor Finishing and Covering,
Painting and Decorating, Bricklaying, and Media for their contribution to the night.

Tourism Industry Partner Breakfast
The Travel and Tourism students and teachers recently hosted a very successful
Industry Partner Breakfast at Holmesglen's Conference Centre.
The formal breakfast presentation was an inaugural function emanating from the
implementation of an Industry Partners Practicum that commenced in the first
term of this year for students enrolled in the Diploma of Tourism.
The Diploma o(Tourism students who took part in the breakfast
Following negotiations with suitable travel and tourism-related organisations,
final year student groups were placed with selected industry partners at various
locations in and around Melbourne to enhance their practical skills in
preparation for joining the workforce.
.....
The host industry partners included Croydon based South America tour
wholesaler Destination Holidays, CBD Melbourne Host Farms Association,Yarra
River and bay cruise operator, Southbank Cruises, the Dandenong Ranges
Tourism Committee at Ferntree Gully, Gulf Station Historic site at Yarra Glen
and the Aus Res reservation services in South Melbourne. All of these industry
groups provide their valuable time, expertise and resource facilities for the
students to complete their tourism training in a workplace environment.
(Back row) Larry Foster, David Endean,
David Endean opened the breakfast by thanking guests from the tourism
industry for their generous assistance in providing live work experience for the
tourism students. Bruce Mackenzie and Leonie Millar attended the function and
met representatives from the host Industry Partner organisation.
john Lant and Suzanne McKinnon with the host industry partners.
A spokesperson from each student group introduced their guest and gave a brief description and
background of the organisation that they were involved with.
Des Cox, Tourism Co-ordinator at Poets Lane Reception centre at Sherbrooke, said that the committee
was very excited at the opportunity of hosting tourism students, particularly with the new Visitor
Information Centre at Lower Ferntree Gully having opened recently. This centre will be able to provide
not only brochures, information and booking facilities for visitors to the region but also practical, hands
on experience for those volunteer students who wish to gain knowledge in the regional visitor
attractions and activities sector of tourism.
Caryl Oliver, Managing Director of AusRes (Reservation Services), was grateful to Holmesglen for
providing the opportunity for a "live" reservation centre, staffed by students. Caryl said that without
the support of forward-thinking institutes such as Holmesglen, practical training for job-seekers was
made much more difficult, particularly as many travel industry employers required applicants to have
had some experience in their field.
A great deal of credit must be given to the student groups who all supported the breakfast with much
enthusiasm and initiative by becoming totally involved in a true-to-life function. Students showed
professionalism in their trade displays, the 'meeting and greeting' of invited guests, and the introductions
given to their industry partners.

Carpentry & joinery CONFERENCE CENTRE, MONDAY 8 MAY
Carpentry & Joinery's Awards Presentation night held a special significance for
the Department, as it was the last presentation for Jim Ducrow, Eric Furby and
Keith Berryman, who retired at the end of May.
All three attended the night, and their support to the Institute and contribution
to student learning was acknowledged by Bruce Mackenzie and Laurie Walker.
Laurie noted that between the three of them, they had initiated several
developments within the training industry, taking Holmesglen ahead of the
competitors. Among those were pre-apprenticeships in the Carpentry and
Joinery area and live work training (transportables, community projects).
There were eighteen awards presented on the night, with the best
apprenticeship/pre-apprenticeship awarded for each group who trained at
Holmesglen in 1997. All award winners were presented with a Certificate and
a gift donated by the sponsors of the night. These included tools and
equipment such as drills and tool boxes.
Graeme Bainbridge and Howard Humffray from the Transfield Obayashi Joint
Venture provided an amazing showcase on the development of Melbourne's
City Link project. Slides gave a fantastic insight into what was happening and
the work and planning that goes into such a project. The presentation also
illustrated to students the industry's expectations of tradespeople, employing
tradespeople with high occupational health & safety standards and
organisations with IS09000 standard.

Glass & Glazing BUILDING 3, FRIDAY 22 MAY 1998
.A Top Glass & Glazing Apprentice, Steven
White with Australian cricketer, Paul Reiffel
.A Leadlighting apprentice, Bunny Drennan
with Paul Reiffel
A string quartet was an unusual sight in the Glass and Glazing Department on
Friday 22 May. However, it set a favourable mood for the last awards
presentation of the inaugural awards festival. The Department again lived up to
high expectations, providing a casual and entertaining night, treating guests to a
buffet meal and the anecdotes of Australian cricketer, Paul Reiffel.
Paul related his experiences as a carpentry apprentice and cricketer to the
glazing apprentices. Paul began his apprenticeship at 16 at Box. Hill TAFE, and
found that he matured quickly working with adults and having to deal with
responsibility. He noted that he did not give work the same emphasis as he
gave cricket. He said that cricket was everything to him, and unfortunately
work suffered because of this.
Paul believes that work and sport are very similar, in that students of both
disciplines require role models to help them achieve. To Paul, Merv Hughes
was his role model when he began playing cricket, and Paul believes he learnt a
lot through Merv's antics and skills on the field. Paul told the award winners
that they must keep in mind that they may one day be role models for other
people, whether on the sporting field or as a businessman, and must be
conscious of the fact that they may help shape other people's future.
The Apprenticeship in Lead lighting and Stained Glass had their first group of
apprenticeships attend the night. 1997 was the first year that the Department
offered the apprenticeship in this area. Among the award winners was the only
female apprentice in the Department, Bunny Drennan. Bunny, who works for
The Leaded Window, received the Top Apprentice Award for Stage 2 of the
Certificate Ill in Furnishing (Leadlight & Stained Glass).
Of the glass and glazing apprentices, Steven White topped the class winning

Communications & Applied Sciences CAULFIELD ARTS CENTRE, WEDNESDAY 20 MAY
Four courses from the Centre of Communications and Applied Sciences had
their first intake of students graduate at the Caulfield Arts Centre on
Wednesday 20 May. The Diploma of Social Science Oustice), Certificate IV in
Workplace Training, Certificate IV in Quality Management & Assurance began in
1996, and the Certificate II in Arts (Interactive Multimedia) in 1997.
The awards night held a number of milestones, with the Professional Writing
and Editing course celebrating their twentieth year, and the last graduation with
Gavin McMurray as the Head of Centre for Communications and Applied
Sciences. It also marked the last time some of the courses will graduate as part
of the Centre, before being transfered to other Departments as part of the
new Institute structure.
Of particular interest on the night were the pathways taken by graduates who
were present, as outlined by the co-ordinators on the night. The Diploma of
Social Science Oustice) has seen three students articulate to a degree at RMIT,
another student has become a private investigator, and several graduates have
gone on to join the Police Force. Some graduates of Human Resource
Operations graduates have gone on to study the Bachelor of Arts (Industrial
Relations) at RMIT, and two graduates from the Theatre Technology course
were accepted into the Victorian College of the Arts to continue their studies.
Students from the Advanced Certificate in Media have articulated into
Swinburne's Professional Radio Course and Deakin University's Media Arts,
while other's have found work with SBS and Working Community Radio.
The Centre also presented special awards to four of its outstanding students
on the night. Three of these students were finalists in Holmesglen's
Outstanding Student of the Year Awards. Justice student Sara Young and
Ceramics student Denise McDonald received awards for Outstanding Diploma
students, while Rasa Bertand was presented with the Outstanding Certificate
student award.

Sharing Their Art at Holmesgkn
.. Pei-Pei He and Maria Banai
During the course of their English language studies at Holmesglen, it came to
light that Maria Banai and Pei Pei He are both accomplished artists. Their
teachers Sharon Meredith and George Mimigiannis were so impressed with the
standard of their work that they arranged for the two students to hold an art
exhibition in the Conference Centre at the Institute from 5 to 19 June 1998.
George and Sharon arranged for invitations to be printed and distributed
around the Institute as well as organising an exhibition launch for staff and
guests.
The pair are so obviously talented that they attracted coverage from the local
newspaper, which featured a story on the exhibition. Pei Pei is originally from
China. During the Cultural Revolution, she was sent to the countryside to
work as a peasant. Many of the works she exhibited depict her experiences in
the country. Maria is from Afghanistan. She specialised in the painting of
miniatures which display exquisite detail. Maria also lived and studied art in
India, and some of her works reflect this experience. She has been accepted at
RMIT to undertake further studies in art.
It is hoped that many staff took the opportunity to view the works of these
two talented students, many of the works were on sale and attracted buyers
both internally and from outside.

Plumbing Ensures up-to ddte Training
The Plumbing Department held an Employer Information Session in the
Building 2 Board Room on Wednesday I 0 June 1998.
In what was a first for the Department, the session gave 19 employers the
opportunity to listen to Plumbing staff talk about different aspects of the
apprenticeship program available at Holmesglen. Most importantly, the session
was also invaluable in obtaining feedback from employers on what they think
about the present programs offered, and the training required in today's
workplace. Ultimately, this will assist Holmesglen provide the most current and
up-to-date training for apprentices.
Head of Centre, Laurie Walker, welcomed everyone and introduced Trevor
Perry, Head of Department for Plumbing Trade, who gave an overview of
plumbing operations and the importance of maintaining scheduled blocks. John
Sullivan then spoke on the dynamics of the apprenticeship program and how
records are kept of a student's progress.
Information was also given on the wide range of post apprenticeship/short
courses available (twelve in total) by Graham Vaile, and John Coglan presented
details on backflow prevention. Arrer morning tea, everyone had the
opportunity to see Holmesglen's facilities first hand on a tour organised by the
Plumbing Department.
Some of the major findings from the session included these items:
The Department could put a greater emphasis on Occupational Health and
Safety, especially following the ramifications of the Workcover "skylarking"
advertisements being screened on television
The Department could get representatives from Workcover to speak to the
students
The information sessions could possibly continue twice yearly
These findings, plus many others, were distributed throughout the Plumbing
Department.
Glenn Shreeve, from Deco Contracting, said that the session gave a valuable
insight as to what the curriculum covered and what apprentices actually do
when they attend Holmesglen.

not only massage our minds, but also the money out of our wallets. The
Furnishing Industry needs to present a strong, progressive and united front to
do a bit of massaging of its own.
Tony believes that the industry needs to get smarter. Furnishing Week is a

operate effectively. The entire apprenticeship system is under threat in a
continuing hostile environment, and Peter said that Australia must not dilute its
training base. Rather, institutions such as HIT should be supported to ensure
that the young professionals of tomorrow receive the best up-to-date training
in the best facilities.
On a lighter note, one of the best comments of the night would be that of Best
Gasfitting Graduate Third Year, Jason Foots, who upon his arrival at the dinner,
asked teacher Bob Hill how many students passed gas last year?! This may be a
little hard to quantify, but there was a pretty good retention rate apparently.
Maria Raucci and Joy Lee were presented with gifts for their hard work in
helping to organise the event. Joy, a frustrated public speaker according to
Trevor, said to all the awards winners that Holmesglen produced the best
plumbers.
