Good clean fun
Curious and Curiouser
With waggly tails and rumbly purrs, they relentlessly show their love every day. What better time of year than the holidaysto delight a four-legged family memberwith a special gift? "Pets get so much joy out of toys," says
Lorrie Shaw, a Chelsea, Mich., pet ownerand pet blogger for annarbor.com. "Theyget to use all of their senses and identifysomething as theirs."Pet ownership is at an all-time high.
Sixty-two percent of U.S. households own apet - some 72.9 million homes, accordingto the 2011-2012 annual survey by theAmerican Pet Products Association. Andwe're loving - and giving - to our animalslike never before. In 2010, dog owners increased spending
on their pooches more than 30 percent, anddogs and cats are among the small pets thatare most likely to get gifts at Christmastime, according to the APPA survey. Ninepercent of dog owners say they've held aholiday or birthday party for their dog, and4 percent say they've done so for their cat.Pet owners' emotional ties with dogs and
cats run deep. "A lot of baby boomers be-come empty nesters and still have that nur-turing need," says Kristen Levine, founderof Tarpon Springs, Fla.-based FetchingCommunications, a marketer serving thepet industry. "A lot of millennials get petsbefore starting a family to fulfill that sameneed."While most pet owners won't hesitate to
purchase a little something special for theirpets this holiday season, the boom in prod-ucts at retail means there's more to choosefrom. Think before you shop, says Shaw."Pay attention to what your pet likes to do.Does he run and play, or is he more cogni-tive?"
Gaga for greenNatural, nontoxic, sustainable, recycled
and locally produced products are hot forpets. Brentwood, Tenn.-based Earth Dog offers
hemp dog collars, leashes, beds and toys, allmade in the U.S. The Leaf green adjustablehemp collar has quick-release hardware($18 to $20, specialty stores). Dog and cat
beds made of soy-based material and recy-cled content are widely available. Manysuppliers offer organic catnip. The PurrHighness cat scratcher from Worldwise ismade of recycled corrugated cardboard anddoubles as a lounger ($20, specialty stores).Doggles Plush Bottle Toys come in theshape of animals and have two squeakers.Stuff a used plastic water bottle inside andthe toy provides instant crinkly chewingfun. ($13 and up, specialty stores).
Cognitive playProducts that appeal to an animal's intu-
itive side, engaging them and encouragingnatural activity, also are trendy. "Foragingtoys are hot," says Levine. They give ownersa chance to do other things while their petis occupied, she says. Shaw suggests thetreat-dispensing Busy Buddy Kibble Nib-ble by Premier Pet (two sizes, $10 to $20,specialty stores). This activity ball stimu-lates pups mentally and physically by mak-ing them work for their food. Levine is a fanof the Physipet, a line of exercise and enter-tainment products for cats and dogs. Thetoys react to the pet, pulling back when thepet pulls, incorporating exercise with playand reducing boredom and separation anxi-ety, says company founder and inventorJude Waddy ($70 and up, physipet.com).Interactive games from the Swedish com-
pany Nina Ottosson are designed to stimu-late a dog's brain and reinforcepeople-friendly behavior. "Puzzle toys pro-vide the mental stimulation many dogs lackin their everyday life," says owner Nina Ot-tosson. Fill the new treat Maze and a petwill happily work away to "solve" the puz-zle and get the treat. There are versions forcats and dogs (starting at $15, specialtystores.)Self-grooming products that keep cats
happy and entertained are on the rise. TheWorldwise Smartykat Brushup self-groom-ing post was voted one of the Top 10 prod-ucts at the 2011 Global Pet Expo byveterinarian Dr. Marty Becker of TV's"Good Morning America" fame. Hundredsof flexible silicone bristles provide a feel-good massage while pulling away loose fur($20, specialty stores.)

Chewers"If you have a chewer, it's inte-
gral that you find the type of toythat can withstand that kind ofabuse," says Shaw. Don't skimpon cheap toys that can easily tearapart. Instead, buy a heavy-dutytoy that can endure tough teeth.California animal trainer and petexpert Diana L. Guerrero recom-mends the Kong Co.'s super-dutyhollow rubber toys. The Kong
Extreme toy, used by police anddrug enforcement and speciallymade for aggressive chewers, canbe filled with treats to help re-duce boredom (available in fivesizes, $5 and up, specialty stores).Brightly colored twists, flyers, hurleys and hucks from West PawDesign are made of Zogoflex, adurable, pliable material that'seasy for a pet to pick up andwon't hurt teeth ($9 to $17, spe-cialty stores).

Other toys forchew-happy ca-nines: bones andtugs made oftightly twistedcotton threads, which clean teethwhile the pupchews and plushtoys for dogs wholike to "mother" a
toy. Nylabone hard nylon dog chews in arange of shapes and flavors last longer thanrawhide bones and promote tooth health. Abacon-flavored DuraChew comes in the shapeof a hollow stick ($12, specialty stores).
Life on the road"More people travel with their pets nowa-
days," says Levine. She stresses the importanceof pet restraint whiledriving. "Just like tex-ting and driving, aloose pet in the vehi-cle can be dangerous,"she says. Kurgo makesa variety of pet-carry-ing products. A Sky-box Booster seat forpuppies and smalldogs up to 30 poundslifts them up to pro-vide them with a win-dow view ($60,specialty stores); the
Kurgo Auto Zip-Line tethers a dog safely, with a harness attached to a zip-line that runsbetween any two fixed points in the vehicleand allows a dog to walk back and forth, sitand stand ($38, specialty stores). Car carriersare especially important for cats, who oftenare not fond of travel. Levine suggests that an-imal lovers bring water for their pets duringtrips. Pawgua makes a portable, BPA-freeplastic dog bowl for thirsty, out-and-aboutpups ($15, specialty stores). The bowl keepswater cool and the top twists off. The best gift for a pet is simple and free:
Stop, drop and play. "The best thing is for youto interact with your pets," says Shaw. "Ithelps them hang on to their cognitive skillsand reinforces that connection owners areseeking when they get pets in the first place."(c) CTW Features

Cage free dog daycare is taking thedog industry by storm with its
many benefits for our four legged friends. The normal routine goes as follows: getup, get ready, feed the dog, let him out todo his business and then leave for work.Only to be greeted by a dog who’s readyto play and romp and go for a walk. Butwait, you still have to help the kids withhomework and cook dinner and thenyour shows are on. Maybe he’ll get awalk tomorrow. This scenario is evenworse for the dog when he has behaviorproblems like chewing or pottying in the
house while you’re away and he has tobe crated. Pulling on leash makes it eveneasier to procrastinate exercising yourdog. Dog daycare provides a great outletfor all types of dogs with or withoutbehavior problems. They play and napand potty at their leisure. When you pickthem up after work they are much lesslikely to bother you during your shows orbe underfoot while you’re trying to getthe house picked up. In fact they willprobably go sleep in their bed or crateuntil you are ready to snuggle up andrelax. They have had great exercise and
socialization all day with their buddies.Dog daycare is not for everyone andtheir dog. You want to take a tour of thefacility and check for clean water, goodsanitization and safety practices. Somedaycares split up their facility intosections for dogs of different sizes andplay styles. Dog daycare can providemany benefits to you and your dog. Some dog daycares even provide otherservices such as housebreaking andtraining, grooming and boarding. Checkto see if there’s one in your area today!

HolisticHandsPalm Beach facialist Tammy Fender’smagic touch has won over the city’sdiscerning clientele, who visit herHolistic Skin Care day spa (711 NorthFlagler Drive; 561-659-2292) forradiant skin and sumptuous hand-blended products. Fender clearly doesn’tbelieve, though, that beauty is onlyskin-deep. “Skin is a living organ,” sheexplains. “What you put into your bodyfeeds the blood, which in turn nourhsesthe skin.” We know she’s right, as whatwoman hasn’t seen her skin reflect theups and downs of her diet, quality ofsleep, stress level – in short, life?Happy, Fender’s approach to change isas gentle as her facials: “Healthy livingis process. One thing at a time.” Hereshe hares with T&C how to step intobeautiful skin.
1. Start Fresh:“First thing in the morning, have a cupof room-temperature water with abouta quarter of an organic lemon squeezedinto it. Lemon stimulates the digestivesystem and detoxifies the skin, whichis an eliminating organ.”
2. Juice Things Up:When you drink juice, the fruit andvegetable enzymes, also known to im-prove digestion, reach your blood-stream quickly. Try this cleansingblend: lemon, cucumber and celeryalong with apple, which sweetens themix. WOrk toward two eight-ouncejuices a day; you’ll start to feel health-ier and look more radiant.”
3. Get Moving: “Circulation beings oxygen to yourcells and is key to cell renewal, so it’simportant to exercise every day. Yoga,Pilates, running – whatever movementfeels right to you. The amount of timewill vary from person to person, but asyou develop a healthier lifestyle, you’llnaturally crave more.”
4. Apply Oil“Essential oils are very powerful, and
Bulgarian rose is the most potent cellrejuventor of them all. Use just one ortwo drops on clean skin every day andyou’ll start to see a change.” TryTammy Fender Quintessential Serum($175).
5. Cultivate Peace:“Skin is affected by the nervous system.Breakouts, shingles and rashes likeeczema and psoriasis can flare upbecause of stress, which really stemsfrom fear about the future. Dailymeditation quiets the mind. You don’tneed to be in a certain position or acertain place. Whatever you’re doing,if you’re focuzed exactly on the task, that’s meditation. It’s a way of beingvery peaceful.” For more information, visit tammyfender.com.

The PhilosophyTammy Fender approaches beauty froma holistic point of view, taking intoaccount the well-being of a person as awhole and thereby creating formulasthat not only benefit physical butemotional and spiritual levels.Centered on healing and creating abalance – both internally andexternally. Her stance on beauty isrooted in the ancient philosophy of yinand yang, whereby yin pertains to thestructure of cells and yang relates tothe body’s ‘chi’ energy. To achieve thisperfect balance, Tammy Fender usesactive, highly vibrational ingrendientsthat are immediately absorbed andpermeate on a cellular level to enhancethe way the skin functions internallywhile also addressing the “psychology”of the cells, bringing homeostatis to
the body and resulting in vibranthealthy skin. Moreover, Tammy Fenderwants to offer people more than just askin care line but a true healthylifestyle change. She encouragesconumers to not only be aware of whatthey put into their bodies but whatthey put onto their – as our skin is aliving organ. Teach that beauty, health, and happiness starts from within.
The ProductsAll Tammy Fender products combinean array of 100% organic pure naturalfood supplements, active botanicalsand therapeutic grade essential oils andare freshly prepared in small batches.Every Tammy Fender formula beginswith a fresh herbal infusion, duringwhich herbs are steeped in water andprepared into a tea. Collectively, these ingredients contain a widevariety of beneficial vitamins andminerals, all of which are absorbeddeep into the cellular level of the skinto promote radiant health and healingof the complexion. Charming Gifts
Gold may be hovering at stratospheric levels and theeconomy is still seesawing, but that's not stoppingwell-heeled shoppers from indulging their jewelryhabits. Retailers and designers say they've noticed anuptick in interest and sales for baubles, which bodeswell for the holiday season. "There's a demand for statement pieces, whether it's
an oversized cocktail ring or a dramatic cuff bracelet,"says Los Angeles jewelry designer, C.C. Skye, whoseshowy accessories have curried favor with boldfacednames like Halle Berry, Gwen Stefani and KristinCavallari. "They feel that we've been through therecession. We've lived it. We don't want to live thatlifestyle anymore. There's still room for morecelebration."Customers may also justify the expense since
jewelry can be reworked with a variety of wardrobepieces, say retailers."People may not be in the mood to buy shoes or
clothes, but they know a fun piece of jewelry canmake an outfit pop and can be worn again and again,"says Melissa Akkaway, owner of Beckley Boutique, which has locations in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. When it comes to fashion jewelry, which usually
tops out at $1,000, clean and spare necklaces sportinginitials and quirky pendants are a key trend for theholidays. Alex Woo's dainty charms, such as initialsand zodiac signs, can sell for $148 in sterling silver,$548 in 14 karat gold and $798 with pavé diamonds.A new holiday addition to Beckley is Maya Brenner'spendants in the shape of states (seen on the likes ofKaty Perry, Eva Longoria and Jessica Simpson) ingold and silver, with easy-on-the-wallet prices of$130 to $300. Those rimmed with diamonds willfetch $1,040.
Another approachable line is New York-based EricaWeiner Jewelry, whose vintage-inspired creationsconjure up whimsy and nostalgia with pricesaveraging under $300. At the company's store inNew York City, manager Emily Ruane steers clientsaway from solitaire diamonds unless the present issupposed to be the real deal - a proposal oranniversary gift.
"It's just not appropriate to give big diamondsunless you're engaged or married," Ruane says. Instead, for the holidays, she suggests the double
letterpress necklace, which actually incorporates oldmoveable type as the pendants and is personalizedwith initials, or the Civil War-era tintype necklaces, which feature photographs printed on iron sheetshanging from brass chains. Men may appreciate thepenknife necklace on a brass chain or a cast fossilnautilus necklace, items that aren't highlyembellished or too overwrought. Los Angeles-based Lord Griffon, known for its
chunky oxidized silver jewelry and a fan base thatincludes Randy Jackson from "American Idol," hasalso noticed a shift in male tastes to less in-your-faceskull ware.
What's more in demand these days are sleekerlooks, such as ID bracelets and fleur-de-lis necklaces, says Suzie Lederer, founder and creative director ofLord Griffon."More than something really hard-edged, they want
something they can wear not when they're just goingto the club or riding motorcycles on weekends,"Lederer says. C.C. Skye also projects a heavy metal holiday of
sorts, glittering with multiple diamonds, such as theWish List Necklace, comprising of heavy bronze chains woven with white stones. Her retailers are
also beginning to stock the pavé punk princessbracelet in gun metal for the holidays. Skye says itcaters to that "luxe, funk princess" trend. Her suggestions for holiday gifts include layered
looks, such as necklaces that are "feminine, soft anddrapey," and bracelets that combine textures such aswooden beads paired with a diamond bangle. Long, dramatic earrings are in for those seeking gifts in-fused with glam and sparkle. The Miguel Ases linefeatures dangling earrings studded with tiny beads thatare easy to wear with tank tops or little black dressesand fit the under-$500 budget.Customers who want to splurge may opt for the de-
signs by Phillips Frankel, including the round pen-dants covered in pavé diamonds at $1,500 or MoritzGlik's oxidized silver and white gold chains with lit-tle box pendants enclosed with rubies, diamonds andsapphires priced around $10,000. "[Jewelry] purchases over $5,000 are what's trend-
ing," Goldman says. "It's about finding somethingthat will make us buy, something that 'I can't livewithout.'" (c) CTW Features

CTW FeaturesRetro style is in, and kids can’t get
enough of it, from cutting-edgeclothing and accessories that recall theclassics to thrift-shop home goodsstraight from grandma’s attic. A quest for individuality in a
homogenized world is behind thevintage juggernaut, say trend watchers. So is a treacherous economy. “I think the resurgence started with
kids rummaging through thrift stores,”says Bonnie VanKeersblick of BlueFlower Vintage, an online shop runthrough Etsy that specializes in vintageitems. “Old movies help fuel the trend, and then the economic downturn andpeople wanting to be green justifiedit.”Stephanie Press, who runs the online
store Hold Vintage, says the same.“I believe there is a desire to escape
from mass manufacturing to thingsthat are unique,” she says. “The fashionindustry has caught on to this and aremaking efforts to include vintage intheir styling and editorials.”Whether you’re shopping for a
curious teen or a nostalgic grown-up,having an eye for the old this seasonwill come in handy. Retro-themedproducts make for great gifts and fun
shopping
. For himThank Don Draper from AMC’s
popular series “Mad Men” for theresurgence in dapper formal wear for
men. Draper’s crisp suits and affinityfor good whiskey ignited craving forboth. Men looking for fashioninspiration will enjoy “Icons of Men’sStyle” by Josh Sims (Laurence KingPublishers, 2011), a guide to iconicmenswear. The British fashion writerchronicles prominent garments of thepast and the men who made themnotable, including stars like GregoryPeck and classic characters like JamesBond. Another way to bring a retro edge to
men’s formalwear is with pocketsquares.“[Pocket squares] are understated but
stylish and not too far out of a guy’scomfort zone,” says Press. “You can goutilitarian with cotton or bold andbright in silk.” Club Room, a Macy’sclothing brand, sells pocket squares ineverything from paisley to polka dot,and in colors like red, blue and black($15, Macy’s). No man who carries a smart phone
needs a watch – but many of themwant one anyway. The Timex Digitalwatch ($40, department and specialtystores), boasts an INDIGLO night-light feature and digital numberdisplay, but a shiny stainless steelexpansion band and water-resistancegives it contemporary utility.
For herClassic style for women is about
finding the perfect statement piece.Think bold jewelry or anything withan Art Deco edge.“I love the idea of a great retro-print
scarf,” says Press. “Not only can youwear it in a myriad of ways, but theyare being used in interior design asframed art or for custom pillows.”Look for scarf designs with blocky
shapes and heavy colors with a sharpcontrast (like black, lime green andred) to achieve a polished Art Decolook.Vintage glass, tableware and
cookware have great legs in the gift-
giving world. VanKeersblick, alifelong fan of vintage style, showcasesa 1950s line of striped and lotus-patterned bowls designed by GretePrytz Kittelsen for the Cathrineholmfactory in Norway. Fresh contemporarytakes on Scandinavian tablewareabound, from Marimekko’s brightclassics to the retro retakes fromSagaform, created by a platoon ofyoung Swedish designers.Typewriters have seized the
imagination of the Facebookgeneration. Search local antique storesand thrift shops for antique brands andrestored classics. Women with apenchant for the sound of keystrokemay enjoy a 1950s Royal portabletypewriter in bright pink ($595,mytypewriter.com) or typewriter-inspired jewelry like a key bracelet($85) or custom key earrings ($58).
For teensYoung people questing for fresh,
individual style have led the way inrefining the vintage aesthetic. Toplease a 20-something, though, avintage gift must possess retro flairalong with techno geewhizery. Old-fashioned vinyl records are on a
tear. A turntable would be a great gift
for a young music fan fascinated by thecrackling sounds of a spinning record.Crosley Radio, a classic brand dating tothe earliest days of radio, offers avariety of models, including theMemory Master II ($400, departmentand specialty stores). This turntable, inblack or paprika, plays vinyl, CDs andcassettes, has an AM/FM radio and aUSB feature compatible with PCs andMacs for ripping and editing audiocontent.Retro-style headphones also appeal to
young music fans who appreciate both1970s design and contemporary highfidelity. Eskuché’s Control, an on-earstyle headphone, comes in basic black, shrimp, salmon and gold ($60,specialty stores).Teens also may enjoy capturing the
moment on old-fashioned film with aLomo LC-A, a cheap camera firstdesigned in the Soviet era. LomographyU.S.A. rocketed to fame with thisimperfect old camera (now produced inChina) that produces unexpecteddistortions, such as light leaks andsaturated colors that give photos aclassic, artistic look.
