DEAR MUSIC LOVERS

Thank you all—musicians, SFJAZZ

members, patrons, press—for giving

SFAZZ the opportunity to joyously

celebrate the milestone of our 5th Season

in the SFJAZZ Center.

This is a proud moment for us all—a time to reflect on what has been achieved, but more

importantly to look forward and build on what has been accomplished.

As we neared the opening of the Center in January 2013, I was often asked how it would

feel to see SFJAZZ’s dream of a dedicated building for jazz finally come to life: “You must

be very proud.” The reply was, “Yes it will be a great accomplishment for us, but I can give

you a better answer in 3 to 5 years.” The creation of the SFJAZZ Center was a risk—was

it possible to create a cultural institution, for jazz, here in San Francisco? It’s now time for

the answer, and it looks like the gamble has worked out and you, our audience, have made

it work: SFJAZZ membership has quadrupled since we broke ground—from 3,000 to over

13,000 members; 90% of all shows have sold out; 35,000 students have been reached

through our education programs; and over 500,000 tickets have been sold.

We all have built a community center that has been generously received by San

Franciscans and jazz fans, and we don’t intend to stand still. Our values of openness,

looking forward, presenting the highest levels of art, and community building are the

foundation for our growth. We will be announcing a number of new initiatives in the

months to come. Following are two examples: a partnership with the San Francisco

Conservatory of Music, who just announced a jazz studies program for the 2017–18

academic year with the SFJAZZ Collective as the core faculty; and we just became an

official “Curator” for Apple Music, providing our point of view on jazz.

We are proud to present to you Season 5! The schedule is full of “only-at-SFJAZZ”

experiences that we hope will inspire you. Thank you for your support. We are here

because of you, and we look forward to continuing to grow with you.

See you at the Center!

“ We wanted to create a community gathering place around jazz. A place where jazz can do what it’s always done—grow and change. Now there’s a permanent place in San Francisco where it can flourish.” —RANDALL KLINE

10

DEAR SFJAZZ PATRONIf it’s your first time at the SFJAZZ Center,

welcome! If you’re a longtime friend

and member, welcome back to the only

freestanding building designed and built

from the ground up for the performance of

the greatest living art form—jazz.

Season 5 kicked off with a blast in

September, and we are so happy to say

that the momentum, dare I say, the swing,

keeps getting better because of you.

Your participation at SFJAZZ is very

important. When you visit SFJAZZ, you’re

not just making the Center your home for great music, you’re also part of the tradition—

supporting the music and helping jazz artists perform live in front of engaged, enthusiastic

audiences. And when you join SFJAZZ as a Member, you’re telling musicians around the

world that jazz thrives in San Francisco.

All of us at SFJAZZ are passionate about the music, and some of our greatest jazz

enthusiasts are our volunteers. They are here at every show to assist in getting us all seated

safely, and we appreciate their ongoing efforts in making your experience that much better.

This is the season where many of us consider what’s important to us—our families and

the place we live. December, in particular, is a month when the contributions to nonprofit

organizations are considered. And SFJAZZ is indeed a not for profit—we receive less than

1% (yes, less than one percent) of our operating funds from government sources. We exist

because of the music presented tonight and the generosity of donors. So, if you have

considered giving an additional gift or becoming a Member for the first time, this is truly a

meaningful time of the year to make a contribution. Thank you for supporting causes and

nonprofits big and small.

Speaking of small, the little ones in your life have a place at SFJAZZ too. Nearly every month,

we present at least one Family Matinee. Family Matinees typically feature the same artists

you see in primetime shows but in a manner and style that’s accessible for kids, parents, and

anyone who wants to have a great experience with the music. Professor Rebeca Mauleón

(the Director of SFJAZZ Education) always hosts a Question and Answer Session following

the show, and often the questions are as fascinating as an improvised solo. Make sure to

check the SFJAZZ.org/live page for streaming information too!

As a special gift to celebrate the 5th Season in the SFJAZZ Center, January 2017 is full of

once-in-a-lifetime experiences including: an Open House Celebration on January 16, a Gala

and AfterParty like none other honoring Zakir Hussain on January 18, and four more exclusive

Spotlight Concerts that celebrate the music of some legendary Bay Area jazz greats!

It only happens at SFJAZZ, and it only happens because of you!

The SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director program was established to give today’s most innovative and influential musicians the chance to curate exclusive programming at the SFJAZZ Center, often featuring unprecedented collaborations between world–renowned artists. Every two years, SFJAZZ selects a new group of forward–thinking musicians to participate in the program. Past SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Directors include Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Miguel Zenón, Regina Carter, John Santos, Esperanza Spalding, Terence Blanchard, Zakir Hussain, and Eric Harland. Notable world premieres have included pianist Moran’s pairing of jazz and live skateboarding, guitarist Bill Frisell’s

adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved featuring actor Tim Robbins, drummer Harland’s Voyager band paired with live video gamers, and an extensively revised presentation of trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s fully–staged opera Champion: An Opera in Jazz.

CHRISTIAN McBRIDE SEP 22–25At just 43, four–time GRAMMY winning bassist Christian McBride is widely regarded as the standard-bearer for jazz bassists in the 21st century. Among the more than 300 albums he’s appeared on are sessions by many of the most illustrious figures in jazz, including Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, and Pat Metheny, while also collaborating with artists as diverse as Sting and Questlove of The Roots. McBride has been the linchpin of various all–star projects, such as the Five Peace Band with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett and Vinnie Colaiuta, as well as the 2015 GRAMMY–lauded Chick Corea Trio with drummer Brian Blade. He’s led a procession of diverse groups since the mid-90s, most recently his Christian McBride Big Band, whose 2011 release The Good Feeling won that year’s GRAMMY for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. He has also found time to oversee jazz programming at Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, along with being the host of NPR’s Jazz Night in America. As an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, McBride brings a kaleidoscopic musical vision and a restless drive for fresh avenues of expression.

VIJAY IYER FEB 9–12The brilliant and adventurous pianist and composer Vijay Iyer is a musician who stretches the boundaries of jazz. He was the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation’s “genius grant” in 2013 and the “quadruple crown” in DownBeat’s 2012 Critics Poll in the categories of Jazz Artist of the Year, Group of the Year, Pianist of the Year and Album of the Year. Iyer has collaborated with the most creative figures in modern jazz, including Steve Coleman, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Ambrose Akinmusire, and John Zorn, among others, and is a member of the visionary collective Fieldwork. He has recorded 15 albums since his debut in 1995, including the acclaimed sessions Historicity (2009), Accelerando (2011), and Break Stuff (2014) featuring his telepathic trio of bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Iyer’s role as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director allows him to explore his creativity in various settings, curating evenings devoted to challenging new music and exciting collaborations.

12

“ It’s a great thrill and honor to be an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director. The number one tradition of the jazz community is to create—always to create new, fresh, wonderful music.”

— CHRISTIAN McBRIDE

MARY STALLINGS MAY 4–7A supremely soulful jazz singer, the San Francisco native has appeared alongside jazz greats including Cal Tjader, Dizzy Gillespie and the Count Basie Orchestra over her stellar career. With her supple sense of swing, blues–inflected phrasing, and gift for empathic interpretation, it’s easy to see why The New York Times declared her “perhaps the best jazz singer alive today.” Following tours with Gillespie, Basie and Billy Eckstine in the late 60s and early 70s, she effectively retired from music, but made a triumphant return in the 1990s. She has since made up for lost time, recording a dozen sessions for Concord, MAXJAZZ and High Note. Stallings has a long history with SFJAZZ, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at our 2011 Gala and performing the opening song during the historic Opening Night concert in 2013. For her week as Resident Artistic Director, Stallings presents music from Feelin’ Good, a night devoted to Brazilian music, and collaborations in both an intimate duo setting and with the SFJAZZ High School All–Stars.

ROSANNE CASH MAY 18–21More than a country music icon, Rosanne Cash is America’s foremost musical woman of letters, who returns after her triumphant series of concerts premiering the songs from her latest Blue Note release, The River and The Thread. She has landed nearly a dozen #1 country hit singles while earning 13 GRAMMY nominations, culminating in three GRAMMY wins for The River & The Thread, which made “Best of Year” lists in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice, and USA Today. Leading publications including The Oxford-American and New York Magazine have published her essays and fiction, and she authored a volume of short stories, Bodies of Water, as well as a fascinating memoir, Composed. For her week, Cash presents a series of concerts in collaboration with fellow stars Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris—a project that has only occurred once before while Cash was an Artist-in-Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

13

“ SFJAZZ has this expansive vision for artists that really allows me to experiment, and to do some really fun things.”

—ROSANNE CASH

“ I’m really excited to come back to the Bay Area as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director. I’m going to bring a lot of my friends and colleagues, some fantastic musicians...musically it will cover quite a range.”

—VIJAY IYER

“ It truly is an honor to be a Resident Artistic Director for SFJAZZ, an institution that has done a great service for this art form. The most wonderful level of art is being able to share something very dear—my music. I am excited to be able to share my musical journey in such a wonderful place.”

—MARY STALLINGS

MASTER CLASS w/ROBERT GLASPERDEC 10 SAT • 1 -3pm joe henderson lab

Few artists today have so artfully straddled the jazz/hip-hop universe as keyboardist, bandleader, and Grammy-winning producer Robert Glasper. For this exclusive master class, Glasper discusses his creative process for producing groundbreaking music like his tribute album to Miles Davis, Everything’s Beautiful, and his score for the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. This class is open to musicians, music producers, composer-arrangers, and music fans alike.

ROBERT GLASPER TEACHING A MASTER CLASS

by RICHARD SCHEININ

THE SOUND OF NOW

N ot one to mince words, Robert Glasper describes Miles Davis as

“a walking middle finger.” He says the trumpeter didn’t give a flying you-know-what if fans or critics complained about his new musical directions.

© JanetteBeckman

21SOUND OF NOW CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

“And that attitude allowed Herbie Hancock to do what he did, and it allowed Wayne Shorter to go out with Weather Report,” Glasper declares. “That’s how things are born. So Miles has taught me to be fearless and always open to change.”

“Change” barely covers what Glasper has been up to over the last 15 years or so, ever since he began to make a name for himself in New York City.

The Texas-born keyboardist, 38, is the de facto leader of a generation of multi-lingual musicians—authentic jazz players who are also authentic hip-hop players and down-in-the-groove R&B players. It’s not a matter of crossing over for Glasper and his cohorts: It’s how they grew up, what they listened to—how they function as musicians. Aptly, SFJAZZ has dubbed this week’s concerts by the Robert Glasper Experiment as “The Sound of Now.” What better way to describe Glasper, whose recent activities include supervising the music for Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead biopic, touring with his own acoustic jazz trio, co-producing Herbie Hancock’s upcoming album and performing with rapper Common at the White House?

“I’m like one of your old-time cats,” he says, a little bit cocky. “Back in the day, you’d call me for an Aretha Franklin session.”

At SFJAZZ, you can expect the Experiment to perform songs from Art Science, its new album, which opens with 90 seconds

of flame-thrower jazz—“out” enough to satisfy ‘60s purists. That dissolves into a mournful anthem that Glasper likens to a Negro spiritual, before the album settles into track after track of pop essences: songs echoing Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind and Fire, ‘70s jazz-rock and Steely Dan, Outkast and Radiohead. Lots more goes tumbling through the Experiment’s blender: “slugging” beats out of J Dilla, half-time swing reminiscent of Elvin Jones. There are long instrumental stretches—the jazz infrastructure to the sleek pop production.

Unlike the group’s previous albums—including GRAMMY-winning Black Radio, which featured star turns from Erykah Badu, Mos Def and others—Art Science is all about the band. It’s a showcase for Glasper, saxophonist

Casey Benjamin; bassist Derrick Hodge (who’s on tour this week with soul singer Maxwell; young bassist Burniss Travis will perform

with the Experiment in San Francisco); and drummer Mark Colenburg. They wrote all the tunes. They handle all the singing—and sound like a bunch of romantics, crooning their soulful “I love you, I miss you” songs.

“Don’t forget the `I’m sorry’ songs,” Glasper says, wryly. “It’s basically the band’s story.”

It’s not all about romance.

As on earlier albums, Glasper connects to a tradition of protest music that extends from Max Roach to Marvin Gaye and Kendrick Lamar (whose groundbreaking To Pimp a Butterfly is suffused with Glasper’s keyboards). “I’m not a particularly talkative person in terms of politics,” he says.

“ I tend to be low-key. But I am a fan of my albums representing the time period that we’re in—representing the good times and the bad.”

The new album’s anthem-spiritual is a memorial to young African-American men shot by police. Likewise, Art Science includes the spoken words of Glasper’s son Riley, responding to the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri:

“It’s not fair!” exclaims Riley, five at the time. “We should let other people live… Let’s try to make the polices better… like real polices that help. No gun shooting!.. We stand up for freedom!”

Well into his second decade as a professional musician, Glasper insists on musical freedom—his right to “go outside the box,” his mantra. On Art Science he brings a jazz sensibility to pop production. On Covered, from 2015, he brings pop production to what is essentially a live, jazz trio date: the acoustic bass and bass drum are boosted so high in the mix that they will make the speakers in your car rattle: “I like to do jazz that has some nuts in it, that makes you feel the music,” he explains. “A lot of times, jazz can be kind of light-in-the-ass. It doesn’t hit you hard in your soul like an R&B song or a hip-hop song. But then when you feel the bass drum or you feel the bass, it’s almost like it’s hip-hop. I love that aesthetic.

“I’m a jazz musician in the true sense of the word,” he says. “You know when jazz was mostly played by black people, back in the day?” he asks, with a rueful chuckle. “Those musicians would also be on Motown sessions; it was super-funky. And jazz was funky.”

John Coltrane played with Big Maybelle, Sam Rivers with T-Bone Walker. Michael Carvin was a Motown staff drummer—then jumped to Freddie Hubbard’s quintet.

And Glasper—who will be 40 in two years, a middle-aged man—pledges to “keep moving” like Miles, no matter what.

“You know what always keeps me afloat?” he asks. “Herbie Hancock did “Rockit” when he was 40. End of story. He’s one of the founders of hip-hop—and he was 40 years old! Because he stumbled across it. He was always searching, always open. So Herbie’s always been that kind of inspiration for me.

“I’d say my future looks bright.” ■
