Welcome to your March edition of the HogPen. Yes, I know,

March already, and what a schedule of events we have planned now the season is just about to start. But, before we all start riding off to the Rallies, Tours and Events, we MUST register our mileage for the Chapter Challenge, please take a look at the article on page 4 by Paul Mason, he has explained it all! Talking of Rallies, I have been asked by Moggy, Director of Bridgewater Chapter, to inform all of you who have tickets for the Cider Rally and cannot make it now, you MUST inform Tina and you MUST NOT resell your tickets as they are not transferable. It is unfair on the people on the waiting list for accommodation. Thanks. Continuing on the theme of Rallies, I have set up an Events Register on our website, and I would like to add all of you who are travelling away to Rallies this year to be included in the register. The purpose of this is so that you can see who else is planning to attend that Rally, and so that we can contact you to arrange group meetings, especially for those Rallies with a Parade of Flags, or more importantly with the Chapter

Challenge Flag for the bonus miles to the Chapter!

Moving on, March sees the remaining Breakfast Meets of the winter season ending with Fagin’s Restaurant in Brookthorpe on the 31st March (Easter Sunday). What a success the Breakfast Meets have been this year. We have seen many of our new members taking part, and I have been to a few where I have heard discussions about shaping future trips and tours. It’s nice to see everyone working together so well. Also this month, we will be presenting our cheque to the Midlands Air Ambulance, a very worthy cause, at the Club Night on the 6th. We managed to raise a total of £1750 for the Air Ambulance over 2012, and I think you all deserve to applaud yourselves for the generosity and support. In the middle of the month on Saturday 16th, we have the Great Harley Bake Off, which is in aid of the Midlands Air Ambulance again, but as you can see opposite, the new store of our sponsoring Dealer, Cheltenham Harley-Davidson is opening officially to the public on that day too. Unfortunately I am unable to be there on the day, and Nelson will be representing me, while I’m taking a small vacation to Gran Canaria to see Lynne and Steve. I do wish the Ladies of Harley a great success on the day. Please, please, please help us out and bake a cake or visit the Coffee Morning and buy cakes as well as join in on the celebrations of the new store opening too! See you soon and take it easy.

Hi everyone, it’s March again and Spring is just

around the corner. I’m writing this on February 10th, and more snow is forecast – hopefully by the time you read this we’ll have turned a corner, with lighter nights and the end of winter in sight! Plans for activities throughout the year are well underway, and bookings starting to fill up for rallies, weekend trips, longer foreign and UK trips and of course our ride-out schedule. Full details can be found on the website. The aim of the Rolling Hills Chapter is to offer a full and varied schedule of Harley Davidson based activities throughout the year. We try to cater for all tastes and budgets, and if any of you have any suggestions on how we can improve our offerings then please contact myself, Gareth or any of the committee. I’d also like to appeal again for articles for inclusion in the HogPen as some months we’re pretty light and Gareth has the unenviable job of trying to put together a quality, interesting magazine with very little assistance. It’s your magazine, please try and make a contribution. Very soon, Rolling Hills will be the envy of every H.O.G. Chapter in the UK, as we’ll have as our home the biggest and best dealership around. The layout, space and decor of the new premises will be amazing, and a dealership to be proud of. Our thanks and best wishes go out to Bill and his hard working team for all their efforts in making this happen. I look forward to meeting you all in the new dealership and at some of the events planned throughout 2013.

OK, enough is enough! Four years running the 1066 Chapter have won the H.O.G. Chapter Challenge based on the annual mileage. Fair play, last year they managed to win the category “Greatest Number of Participants” by registering 181 members onto the Chapter Challenge, as well as taking the Chapter Challenge award for “Greatest number of Miles Covered” by covering a staggering 635,369 miles. But FOUR consecutive years is way too long to go unchallenged. As undisputed champions of the SofER Rally 2011, we can’t just sit by and let this continue. So, one of Rolling Hills’ challenges this year is to get as many of our members registered as early as possible so we can log those miles. We have many long haul rides already planned for the year by your team of Road Captains. We still have quite a few more to add to the calendar – so we have every possibility or knocking 1066 off the top spot. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REGISTER YOUR BIKE... SIMPLES! Pop down to Cheltenham HD in their shiny new showroom on the 30th March and see Simon or Lisa to register your bike, or even one of the Chapter Committee Members to assist. Make sure you bring your H.O.G. and Rolling Hills membership cards with you. If you have more than one bike, register them all, as EVERY MILE COUNTS! It couldn’t be any easier. From that point forward “ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS RIDE, RIDE AND RIDE”. Every mile counts toward your mileage pins. Even if you are touring the USA on a hire bike, the mileage can be recorded (download the form from the H.O.G. website), so if you are on any of the long tours such as the USA, Scotland or Exmoor, weekend rally’s such as Hogs in the Hayfields or just popping down to the shops, it all counts.

More importantly, it not only counts towards your mileage pins, but also the Chapter Challenge. And to make things more attractive – FOR ONE DAY ONLY – the dealership have very kindly offered a FREE OF CHARGE full safety check including tyres (tread, wear & pressure), brakes and lights which is worth £30.00, if you register your Harley on Saturday 30th March. It’s great timing, spring is almost here, the bike is back on the road. What could be better than a free safety check to ensure your bike is safe and ready for the riding season? Please note that due to the expected high turnout on 30th March, it may not be possible to offer the safety check on the day, however, the dealership will be offering vouchers which can be redeemed at a date convenient to you. Simply call Lisa or Simon to book your bike in later. If you think the challenge is beyond reach, think of it like this – if every member registers and rides just 3,200 miles, that’s 640,000 miles! If you’re booked on the Scotland trip, there’s at least 1,200 miles towards your personal target of 3,200 in one week. There are 28 bikes on the 1,800 mile Wild West Tour, that’s a staggering 50,400 miles (8% of the chapter target) in just 2 weeks. It can be done but we need everyone to play their part. Please remember, the dealership offer is only available if you register on Saturday 30th March. You can register your bike after the 30th March but unfortunately you won’t be eligible for the free safety check. And to top it all, Vic Hooper is running a short ride out in the afternoon, leaving the dealership around 1:00pm. Finally, if Cheltenham is too far for you on Saturday 30th March, then download the Mileage form and take it to the nearest dealer to you for your miles to be registered, then send the form to us at: Rolling Hills Chapter c/o Cheltenham Harley Davidson 593 Princess Elizabeth Way Cheltenham GL51 7PA

RETRO RACE DAY - CASTLE COMBE CIRCUITSUNDAY 14th JULY 2013

Fancy something different?

This is a group ride to the Castle Combe Circuit just off the A46 between Stroud and Bath. This is day two of a full weekend of retro car racing. The Classic Sports Car Club, Classic Clubmans, Sprites, Midgets and others will be competing. Admission to the circuit is £15.00 Adults (17-64) or £10.00 Seniors (65+). Racing starts at 1:00pm. More details about the event can be found at www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk where you can also buy your tickets in advance if you prefer.

We will be leaving Cheltenham at 10:30am and will take a scenic route to the circuit. Members are also welcome to join the ride out without any commitment to enter the circuit. We will probably not organise a group ride back to Cheltenham as members are likely to want to leave the circuit at different times and head off in different directions.

Rolling Hills is the oldest chapter in Europe and I should know as I am a Founder Member joining in 1989. My original membership number was 13, with the first 12 being allocated to committee members. Robin Wenham, Dealer Principle, was the first Chapter Director. Other positions were:-Assistant Director Malcolm MeddingsSecretary Jo TaylorTreasurer Margaret MeddingsActivities Officers Pat Corish and Mark TaylorLadies of Harley Sue CurrieSafety Officer Neil CurrieRoad Captain Mike RichardsPhotographer Kevin HarmonGirl Fridays Lisa Ellerington and Julie Wenham Membership grew fast in the first couple of years and soon there were more than 300 members. Ride outs often had 50+ bikes and there were more than 30 organised during the first year including trips to Italy and the Alps. Initially a news sheet, “The Motex Times” was produced but in

February 1992 the first “Hogpen” was released aimed at Rolling Hills Members. This gave details of future events plus reports on those already passed. In A5 format and Black & White it was 8 pages long and an instant hit but like the modern version, it was sometimes difficult to fill. The second edition carried a note from the Assistant Director,

who also edited the Hogpen, asking for typed contributions. Some things change and some don’t. By June the content had grown to 20 pages and in September it was

produced in colour and 24 pages long. Despite the many events, the weekly Wednesday Club Nights and the Hogpen, very few of the original members still seem to be about and none of these are still members. Does anyone remember Nigel Reis organiser of the first Rolling Hills Rally, the “Posh Party” at Tenby? Sally Dowd or “Big Sal” to her friends still performs with her band at some rallies so some of you may have heard her but none of the original committee who put in such hard work to get this Chapter up and running are still about. Motex itself had some problems and Robin Wenham left in 1998 with

Where Have They All Gone?

the business being taken over by Pendragon. The entire committee was disbanded and a new one elected although Sue Lane who was already Chapter Director since 1998, was asked to continue and did so until she retired from Motex in 2000. We still present an award in her honour each year. In June 2000, when Sue retired the committee was made up of:-Director Sue LaneAssistant Director Tony ReadSecretary/Historian Derek Putley Treasurer Peter HuntMembership Officer Graeme HogActivities Officers Dave WilkinsonLadies of Harley Andrea ShorrockSafety Officer Clive Allsop and Trevor StirrupPhotographer Ray SturdyWebmaster Dave LoweEditor Jim ScottRoad Captains Mike Ellis Peter Hunt Nick Birt Graeme Hog Nigel Pain How many of these do you still come across? The reality is that in 5-10 years members drop off the scene and are often never heard from again. There will always be people with a change of circumstances, loss of job or moving away but this surely cannot account for the over 300 members that were there at the start of Rolling Hills but who are no longer seen around. Will you be one of those 10 years from now?

This month’s featured Regular Roller is no stranger to most of us. Please welcome Wayne Honey our previous Director. “Hello Wayne, tell us a bit about your background, where you’re from (as if we didn’t know)?” “Hi, as you know I’m born and bred and lived in Bristol all my life. I’ve lived here for 23 years now!” And what about the other, hmm, years? “No, I have always lived here in Bristol.” So what do you do for a living, in Bristol? “I work for Bath and North East Somerset council as a ‘Neighbourhood Manager’ which is basically the new title for Ground Maintenance and Street Cleaning. We look after 100 square miles of grounds in the county with a team of just 25.” “Going back before that, I used to run my own Tool Hire business, and when my wife passed away, and after taking time out for a while, I just couldn’t get back into it. Around that time, I was approached by a US company who wanted to buy the business which was really good timing, so I took their offer.” “For a little while I even ran the local village Post Office where I live now. The old lady that ran the Post Office wasn’t able to get the hang of the new computerised systems and so I did it for a while.” Thanks for that 1st Class delivery! Now tell us how you got into motorcycling and your passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles? “I passed my bike test back in 1992, just before the government added the new theory test. I thought I’d get my bike license before it got more difficult, and add it to my collection, including an HGV license and my Balloon license.” When you see Wayne, ask him about his Hot Air Ballooning! “I’d not been planning to get a bike, but when I was learning to ride, I bought a Honda CM125. I kept this a little longer while I tryed to pass my test, as I’d spotted and put a deposit down for a fine looking Sportster that my local bike shop had taken in on a trade in. It was an import from California, and even had the daylight running lights and all the extras including the brand new Evo engine. As soon as I passed my test, which took a bit longer than I hoped, I went and got my

first Harley, back in 1992.” “I’ve always loved Harleys, since watching Easy Rider when I was a teenager - I loved Nelson’s article last month! Yeah, I wanted the Harley Chopper like Dennis Hopper’s.” “I kept the Sportster about eight years in total. And then there was a time when I was without a bike.” What happened next, when did you get back onto a Harley? “It was a couple of years after Julie and I had got together, and we were going to Shropshire for a weekend when I mentioned to Julie that there was this Harley Dealership that we’d be going past on the way. Julie said that I should call in as we were passing, so we pulled off the M5 at Junction 6 and visited Motex in Worcester.” “The sales staff were ever so friendly, and they asked if I had a bike license, followed by handing me a helmet and jacket and said take one for a ride. I wasn’t going to, but Julie said I should, so I saw this Herritage Softail that I liked, and took it out for a ride, shaking with fear the whole way.” Sounds like me when I first rode a Harley! “When I got back, and with encouragement from Julie, I put down a deposit on a new Herritage there and then. That was an expensive weekend away!” “And that’s how I became a member of the Rolling Hills Chapter. I had been a member of Bridgewater before and even a member of the Pinkerton’s, which was a group that met at the Pinkerton pub in Swindon.” “Shortly after getting the new Harley, Julie and I bought tickets to a Pub Meet event in Evesham and we went along, not knowing anyone. We were both made very welcome and we ended up being sat next to Bob Harris, the then Director, who introduced us to the other members of the Chapter.” So what was being a member of Rolling Hills to you, back then? “It was very different to how it is now. At Club Nights, and there would be a large gathering, the Membership Officer would read out the articles from the HogPen, they were really boring. If you wanted to buy merchandise, it used to take months for it to turn up.” “When the Membership Officer stood down, I offered my services, and that’s how I started on the Committee and so I was able to inject new enthusiasm into the Chapter and change the events to make them more interesting. I also

took on the task of looking after the Merchandise.” “Later, when Brian Hollett stood down as Director, and John Stewart was appointed, I became the Assistant to John. And then in a couple of years when John stood down, I naturally took over as Director then - a job while I am proud to say I enjoyed for the five years that I did until I felt it was time for a change, last year.” “During the years prior to me becoming Director, the Chapter had lost its sponsoring dealer and shortly after I became Director, we were fortunate to be adopted by the newly opening Cheltenham HD.” “My proudest moment was receiving the Chapter Charter from H.O.G. with our original Chapter Number, 9070, making us the older Chapter in Europe once more.” What a great history, thanks for sharing. Moving on slightly, tell us what you would consider your dream ride? “OK, that is as difficult one to say, particularly as I have ridden with the Chapter in the US and Europe to many events, and the best part was riding them with fellow Chapter members, riding with friends, and being able to stop riding at the end of the day and

then stay with my friends for a drink before the day was through - I love that the most.” “There is one, I have always wanted to ride Highway 1. Paul Mason is looking to organise a ride in 2015, and I am going to fulfil that dream.”

What would be your dream bike to ride Highway 1? “Yeah, another good question. I would have said ‘Captain America’ the Chopper from Easy Rider, but since I’ve ridden many a mile on a Herritage and now on the Ultra, I would probably say a CVO Ultra!” What would be the next customisation you will do to your Harley? What’s the next accessory? “You know, I don’t have many extras on my Ultra. Just a few bits of Chrome, and some Screamin Eagle pipes. So there is probably nothing else I would like to do to my current Harley now. If money were no object, it would simply be a case of swapping it for a CVO Ultra.” Wayne, thank you so much for taking part in the Regular Rollers. One final question, is there anything you would like to say to the members of Rolling Hills? “Yes, I would like to say that I’m really lucky to be a part of such a fantastic club as Rolling Hills. Thank you everyone for your support over the years, and for the friendships that I have made, especially at the Rallies and on the trips away. Thank you all, and don’t forget to Ride with a Smile... Like me!

LAST NIGHT I dreamt that I was stopped by the Police

for riding my bike without lights on. At the time I was almost certain that I was asleep in my bed, but the WPC wouldn’t take that into consideration and threw the book at me. Luckily I woke up and got off scot-free. Thinking about it later, I realised that she was only doing her job and I was also riding down the wrong side of the road, so I would like to applaud the Police for an extremely thorough job. Although it is hard to take them seriously if they don’t wear anything but boots below the waist.

I WAS in the countryside the other day and I saw some

M6Rugbyto Gretna

Well done to Loic and Bob for guessing that the M5 is 162 miles. As they both got their answers in at the same time, £10 vouchers are on their way to both of them. This month we are looking at the famous M6 which is Britain’s longest Motorway spanning some 262 miles from Rugby at the South to Gretna at the North (which is near Gretna Green for those wishing to elope). The M6 is also Britain’s busiest motorway, and those of you who have travelled on this north of Birmingham will agree to that! The first section to open wasthe Preston Bypass, which became Britain’sfirstMotorwaytoo,in1958.A number of bypasses and sections were added over the years, and

finallyformingthefulllengthin1970. Just as recently as 2008, 50years after first opening, saw theadditionofthefinalsectionbetweenCarlisle and Gretna joining onto the A74(M). This final section, knownas the Cumbrian Gap, now permits uninterrupted Motorway travel from Dunblane to London or Dunblane to Exeter. In2007,aTVseriescalled ‘SkyHigh’ followed the route of the M6 fromtheair(episode42)inwhichitdepicts the sprawling mass of roads around Birmingham before heading north to the Borders via Cheshire. Your turn now. The M6 has 52 junctions along its route, but can you guess what Junction 6 (the Gravelly Hill Interchange) is better known as? The first correct answer receivedbefore 15th March, will win a £10 merchandise voucher. Answers via email to:[email protected] with “M for Motorways 2” in the Subject.
