No daily newscasts. Only teasers for newspaper buying.--Shipwrecks/emergency news

Infamous Scopes “monkey” trial covered by WGN in Chicago.

NBC introduced ‘network’. (25 stations)1928- CBS did the same.

Hard News by NBC’s Lowell Thomas!15-minute.

Newspaper drama begins!

1932 1933 1934 1936

Newspapers imposed blackouts on radio.

Lindbergh baby kidnapping.

Biltmore Agreement. Halting of newsgathering. 5-minute restriction. Only after papers came out

Mutual Broadcasting System. 4 stations saw a need to unite.

MBS earned a great reputation through its beat coverage of DC

NBC formed own newsgathering 1933

Didn’t work! As well as Howard Hughes’ flight

Golden Age (1935-50)“Radio’s Best Time”

News embargo broke 1935.

Associated Press agreed to sell its news services to radio again.

News now firmly placed in broadcast schedule.

News averaging 10% of programming by 1930’s.

1938- stations subscribing to more than one news wire. News written just for radio!

Spurred radio in to golden age.

NBC developed European news operation in 1937.

Was and continues to be conversational and have ‘actualities’.

1944: CBS broadcasted portions of D-Day.

However, television’s inception plus the war’s end caused this to begin to taper.
