Stewardship Tithing: God’s Plan for Giving

Tithing weekend of January 30, 2011: $10,064

Student offerings: $12

From Fr. Leo. The Gospel today reminds us that our lives and our deeds must serve as examples to others, pointing the way to the Father. Not for our own benefit do we labor, but so that others may see our good works and give glory to our Father in Heaven.

From the Pews. For a while now we’ve been tithing at least 10% of our gross income; now I’m working on tithing my gross time. I think this may be more difficult than tithing of money, but when I do, the rewards are endless and my days are much more joyful.

Quote Worth Reading. Some people say, “Give till it hurts.” But God recommends that we give until it feels good. God loves a cheerful giver! —Author Unknown

My child’s good deed for the week. Several of our children offered these as their tithe in addition to their financial gift: I wanted to give a gift to a friend. Someone hurt my feelings, but I kept quiet. I was happy my sister won a game. I cleaned my room.

Notes from organizations who received money from St. Mary’s Tithe the Tithe:

Thank you for your recent check of $1,500. The money will go far in helping us here at Sacred Heart to maintain our ministry programs. . . . The youth are hosting a Living Rosary tonight. We will remember you as we pray the beautiful Rosary of our Mother Mary! —Angie Stover, CLM, Office Manager, Sacred Heart Church, Pine Ridge, SD Your continued support for these young women and children helps in many ways. —Deirdre Foley Citro, Executive Director, Mom’s House

To read the complete letters from individuals and organizations that have been helped by Tithe the Tithe, please see the bulletin board in the church

vestibule.

— Adoration and Confession —

"Music, great music, gives the spirit repose, awakens profound sentiments and almost naturally invites us to lift up our mind and heart to God in every situation, whether

joyous or sad, of human existence. Music can become prayer."

— Pope Benedict on music's power to bring the spirit toward God

For many people, change does not come easy. Change requires us to stop doing things a certain way in order to do something else. Many people find comfort in familiar routines and known ways of acting. Change interrupts those familiar routines. But change is also an opportunity to stop and reflect on what we are doing and to come to a better understanding of God, who does not change.

Why does the Church change the Liturgy? In its Liturgy, the Church always attempts to follow the “norm of the holy Fathers.” This effort “requires not only the preservation of what our immediate forebears have handed on to us, but also an understanding and a more profound pondering of the Church’s entire past. ...This broader view allows us to see how the Holy Spirit endows the people of God with a marvelous fidelity in preserving the unalterable deposit of faith, even though there is a very great variety of prayers and rites” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 9). The Liturgy must, therefore, always celebrate and make present the Paschal Sacrifice of Christ—His saving Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension. However, over time, it may become necessary to make certain changes, such as adding prayers for recently canonized saints and adding texts that reflect the needs that the people of God wish to bring to God in prayer. The third edition of the Roman Missal makes such additions and provides a fresh translation of the Latin texts of the existing content of the Missal.

World Day for Consecrated Life. Today we rejoice and celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life. Over the years, many men and women have chosen to live out their baptismal vocation by professing the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They do this by joining a religious congregation, a secular institute, or through private vows. We pray for these people and ask God to bless our Church with others who will dedicate their lives to God’s service. Please also continue praying for Don Bender of our parish who is preparing for diocesan priesthood.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

For February 2011:

General Intention: That the family may be respected by all in its identity and that its irreplaceable contribution to all of society be recognized.

Missionary Intention: That in the mission territories where the struggle against disease is most urgent, Christian communities may witness to the presence of Christ to those who suffer.

Prayer Intentions of Pope Benedict

From St. Mary’s Archives

“For nearly two years following the destruction of the old church (log chapel), the

Catholics of Lancaster were without a suitable place of worship. In the meantime, however, a new church was under construction. Work on it probably started in 1761; the cornerstone was laid early in 1762, and the church completed late the same year. It had also been decided to enlarge the churchyard if possible, and application for an additional lot was made by Father Robert Harding of Philadelphia, superior of the Jesuits in Pennsylvania. On June 27, 1761, Lot No. 237 on the Borough Plan, which adjoined the original two lots, was granted to Robert Harding.”

— from “The History of St. Mary’s Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1742-1951”

by Edgar G. Musser

Updates on Church Restoration Projects. As you can see by the scaffolding, conservation of our third mural, The Annunciation, began this week by Jeff Johnson of Johnson & Griffiths. This project is expected to take about six to eight weeks.

Another stained-glass window has been removed for a complete restoration. Richard Buehrer and his staff will remove every piece of glass and relead the entire window. Barring any unforeseen problems, it is anticipated that the window will be reinstalled by the end of March.

You may also notice that one of the black lamp poles in front of the church has been removed. It was hit by a snow plow, and the base was compromised. When the temperature warms, the base will be fixed and the pole reinstalled.

The history of the church teaches us that the

greatest saints are those who professed the greatest

devotion to Mary. — St. John Bosco
