facilities from merely allowing visitors to view the ani-

mals in their cages to facilities that let you observe the

peculiarities of these creatures in a more dynamic and enjoyable way.

Yokohama Hakkeijima SEA PARADISE, just over one hour

away from Tokyo, is an amusement island which is 18 times as large

as Tokyo Dome. There are many enjoyable spots including one of

Japan’s largest aquariums primarily designed to provide an opportu-

nity for human beings and living animals to communicate and inter-

act, an amusement park with 14 different vehicles, various shops and

restaurants, a hotel and parks. No admission fee is needed to enter the

island. You can freely walk around the parks and browse through the

shops, but an admission fee is needed to use the facilities.

Actresses’ Road Started When She Was Scouted by NHK

Kimiko’s road to becoming an actress is interesting. When she was 14 years old, she went to

NHK to see her actor cousin BANDO Yasosuke (now BANDO Mitsugoro) perform in a pro-

gram, and while there, she was discovered. The scout did not know she was Yasosuke’s cousin,

which shows how outstanding she must have been.

女優　池上 季実子さんじょゆう いけがみ き み こ

IKEGAMI Kimiko, one of Japan’s top actresses, has an image that suits the

kimono. She was actually born in New York and was raised there until she was

three and a half years old.

Her first appearance was in the “Boy Drama Series” in which she

was selected — without preparation — for the main cast. After that

she received a new face award and stepped out onto the road to

becoming a top actress. Kimiko had been secretly dreaming to

become an artist (painter), but the young girl knew she could not

make a living in that field. After experiencing acting, she came to

was certainly eventful. Her parents had divorced and she had experi-

enced a difficult childhood. Kimiko, who was spiritually humble, met

She remembers the

New York city. According

to Kimiko, “New York is a city where many races come and go, and

where people live differently. New York is home to a mix of many

different cultures, but in fact they are not actually mixed.” She says

“New York is the city you visit when you are active. The city will

stimulate you and you can absorb new things.”

Having a Child Gave Her Strength and Weakness

Once she thought she would live in New York, but her thoughts

changed greatly when she gave birth to a daughter. Having a child

gave her strength and weakness. “My life changed very much,” she

says. “It provided me with a strong will so that I cannot die for her. It

became my strength, but at the same time it became my weakness in

that I cannot live without her.” Kimiko got divorced when her daugh-

ter was two years old. Because of that, it seems they are strongly

united. Sometimes she advises her daughter as a father, mother, a

woman and a friend. As Kimiko’s parents also got divorced, she

knows better than anybody what her daughter thinks.

actress?” she replied, “Being an actress is not a job that can be taken

over. Even among second generation actresses, the success percent-

age seems to be low. I want her to do what she likes.” Kimiko, who

has been a top actress, knows the right side and the wrong side of the

entertainment world well, to the point that she may not want her

daughter to walk the same road.

crucial importance of the environment, the timing of the

coming huge EXPO 2005 AICHI JAPAN could hardly

be better. This massive event will run for six months from 25 March

to 25 September, in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture on the Pacific coast

of Japan’s central island of Honshu. The Expo pulls together a wide

range of activities and events run by Japan and some 125 participat-

Environmental considerations are of course a very high priority of

EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan and have been taken into account in site

planning, operation and transportation. The entire management and

transport aspects of the EXPO have been constructed with a view to

The Mucha Trust has gathered his works that were scattered around

the world and worked hard to repair them since the Mucha Museum

opened in Prague in 1998. In this exhibition, about 100 works includ-

ing drawings and pastel works whose recent repair has made it possi-

ble for them to be lent overseas, are now being displayed for the first

According to a national census, 22%

early forties are single. The figures

increase in urban areas. In Tokyo, they are 28% for men and 23% for

will be single which means that before long, over a quarter of

This year marks 400 years since Hans Christian Andersen’s birth.

The other day I had an opportunity to talk with a portly expatriate

Japanese child who recently returned to Japan. The country she was

raised in was poor and she said the expatriate Japanese children

called themselves “Ugly ducklings.” This is taken after the name of

Andersen’s famous tale “the Ugly duckling” that was born ugly and

bullied by other ducklings and birds. The ugly duckling grew and one

day saw his own figure reflected in the lake and realized he was a

beautiful swan.

dren. One day you realized you were children of Japan, a rich coun-

beautiful swan and not an ugly duckling. Andersen’s story which

indicates that swans are more beautiful than ducks, is taken as a dis-

criminatory story by many Westerners.”

What kind of techniques does he mean? “Well, lovers for centuries

have recognized the fact that if the man can last longer during love

making, then it will be more fulfilling for both partners,” shares

Powell. “Thus (in the book), one can find various techniques to

extend love-making in various cultures. Some ancient Taoist teach-

ings recommend various physiological methods such as holding your

breath or concentrating on certain muscles. It also advocates more

subtle techniques such as envisioning a circle of energy circulating

from the genitals, up to the spine, then down the front in the body,

The essence of the book comes down to one

simple truth, the “Heart.” Sexual communion is

a matter of both partners surrendering their

body, mind and ego to an infinity of bliss,

Powell says. “If lovers discuss their emotional

patterns, then real insight into the relationship

develops and thus the relationship has the

chance to become extremely intimate. When

both partners have surrendered their hearts to the relationship,

then they do not feel so separate from one another.”

With these simple and yet strong words, Powell himself prac-

tices his own teachings in his own life. Even as a teenager,

Powell has been interested in meditation. “As I persisted in learn-

ing meditation, I began to have

the experience of this feeling of

energy while doing almost any-

thing — eating, going to sleep,

waking up ... not just during the

climax of sex! Thus, sexual play

(for me) is not my only avenue to

feel a connectedness with life. I

can sit alone on a desolate mountain peak, and feel utterly in union

with nature. Everyone has the ability (to meditate) and it’s sad that

they do not make use of it.”

“A person can become so blissful in meditating that it becomes easy

(for him) to just become a blissful jerk!” exclaims Powell. “So, in a

relationship, it is important that my partner be able to talk about her

one another at the level of the heart. Such conversations open up

the heart to true emotional intimacy, relationship and

2. After the war, it was abolished as it was considered to be against

the spirit of the Constitution. However it was revived in 1966 as

“National Foundation Day.” February 11 is based on the

The Meiji Government that won the war against the Shogunate in

1868 was urged to establish an Emperor-orientated nation and admit

that all legends described in the oldest history book “Kojiki” (712

AD) and in “Nihonshoki” were true stories and to utilize this in their

policies. All Emperors starting from Jinmu up to the present

Emperor, were said to be descendants in an unbroken line of a god

called “Amaterasu-Ohmikami” and was thus deified by the people.

Emperor who governed the nation.” One of them was the Emperor

Jinmu and the other was the 10th Emperor SUJIN. The book

describes Emperor Jinmu in indirect form as “it is told that Jinmu

was the first Emperor who governed the nation.” Emperor Sujin is

described as “creating the family register system of people and allo-

cated duties. Things were abundant and the country was peaceful. So

people admired the Emperor and called him ‘the first Emperor who

an established theory among academics that the Emperor Jinmu did

not actually exist. Not only Jinmu, but also the other Emperors up to

The famous story has it that when the Emperor Jinmu was based in

Kyushu, he explored the Yamato (Kinki) region, which later became

the center of Japan. The Emperor Jinmu was viewed as a shadow of

the Emperor Sujin and his successors who started the Yamato Court.

It is said that Emperor Jinmu passed away at the age of 127. Most of

the Emperors of that time were estimated to have lived longer than

100 years. As the year of Jinmu’s enthronement was created in the

lucky year based on the Chinese calendar, it seems as if the life spans

of these fictitious Emperors were used for the adjustment.

persuasive view is that the Emperor Sujin came from the Korean

peninsular. This view also maintains that the Emperor’s family, who

came to Japan gradually, put the influential powers of Yamato under

their control and became the rulers as time went by and they needed

to justify their status. Considering the Japanese characteristic that

makes people repeat past practices, it was the most effective way to

be a representative of the god as the Emperor’s family’s blood is

connected to the god. In the above-mentioned two books, there are

reliable sections that described the later era and the mythical period,

which are now believed to have been fiction created by the ruler.

There is also a myth that the sovereign was a descendant of a god

in Korea. After excavating the grave of high officials in Japan such as

Takamatsu-zuka, it was gradually discovered that those buried were

Because of their long distance relationship, “The only way we can

communicate is through e-mail or phone calls,” Bradley says. “Those

are not the best ways to communicate. We can easily misunderstand

or misinterpret what the other person says just by the misuse of words

and/or the other persons’ tone of voice. Of course, it’s always better to

talk face to face for some issues, but we have no choice but to com-

municate by e-mail or phone.” For Mayumi, “Brad being a ‘gentle-

man’ in a Western sense makes me feel jealous sometimes. Japanese

women can sometimes misinterpret the behavior of Western men as

him being more than ‘nice and kind.’ (Also) I have to be an inter-

preter for him when we have my friends or family around. I don’t care

about being an interpreter, but it would be better if he and my family

One night my 6-year-old daughter was playing with her Barbie and

asked if she could cut Barbie’s hair. I said “No!” When I saw my

daughter holding a pair of scissors, I said, “Don’t cut Barbie’s hair.”

“Yes. I’m just pretendeding to cut it,” my daughter replied. The next

morning, I found some of Barbie’s hair. So I asked “Did you cut

Barbie’s hair?” She said “No!” I showed her the hair, got angry and

scolded her. “Why did you cut the hair, and not tell me the truth?”

The reasons I got angry were: First, Barbie’s hair cannot grow

back again; Second, she didn’t follow my instruction; and third, the

most important one, she did something wrong but did not confess to

it. The more I considered it, the more I got angry, so I decided to

punish her by not letting her have her breakfast. When my daughter

knew that she could not have her breakfast, she cried and said,

“Sorry, mommy! Is it OK now that I already said sorry?” I told her

the story of “The Shepherd’s Boy and the Wolf,” “Once you tell a

lie, then no one will believe you again. I don’t know if you really

Why did I decide that it was my daughter’s fault, and didn’t even

her the chance to explain? I regretted that I blamed her too quickly. I

think about my daughter: she just woke up, was unreasonably scolded

by me, then was forbidden to eat. It made me so sad that tears came to

my eyes. My daughter is always very honest. Why didn’t I believe

Typhoons and earthquakes caused many casualties in 2004. I feel

very sorry for the survivors. In a moment, they lost their loved ones

and property, that they had built up over many years. I do not under-

stand why the government doesn’t offer compensation for their loss.

Although local governments offer condolence money and citizens

offer charity money, these are often far from enough.

Nobody decides to become a casualty. The government should offer

enough compensation for the survivors. For whom does a nation

exist? For the citizens, of course. If citizens suffer from an absurd

It seems like a Halloween party every Sunday afternoon in

Harajuku, Tokyo as the streets come alive with car crash victims,

evil nurses and fantasy creatures posing in front of amateur pho-

tographers and confusing tourists with their dark make-up and elabo-

rate costumes. But Halloween party it isn’t, as it’s actually one of

Japan’s popular subcultures of the young and not so young that sim-

ply astounds many foreign visitors (and Japanese) in Tokyo and

around the world.

just dress up as a character, but you have to be the character in

thoughts, words and actions. In a society where the need to be in a

There are typically three different genres of Cosplaying — science

fiction, modern and fantasy. Science fiction involves space ship

pilots, alien creatures and robots. In the modern genre, Cosplayers

dress up as their favorite pop stars and idols. Romantic comedies and

drama can seem to look like just regular street clothes for some peo-

ple, but trained cosplaying fans can immediately distinguish who is

wearing and being who. Examples include Love Hina, Azumanga

Daioh, Get Backers, Noir and Initial D. In Tokyo however, the most

popular genre is fantasy where cosplaying can be as colorful as a

pretty princess like Sailor Moon or as dark as evil monsters of all

sizes. Anime and video games also fall into this genre. This includes

the popular Final Fantasy video game, Naruto, Saiyuki, Fushigi Yugi,

Slayers, Petshop of Horrors, and so much more.

the costume! Simple costumes can often be easily put together, but

more complicated costumes can take weeks or even months to finish.

exquisite dresses, beaded jewelry, specially dyed fabrics, leather belts

have some fun, it’s really just a harmless way

for young men and women to get the attention

they want through a hobby that garners atten-

and wigs, applying make-up and practicing
