The nineteenth Hinman Student Research Symposium was held Oct. 25-27, 2013, at the historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Symposium featured oral and poster presentations of research projects by students from dental schools across the nation. At this year’s Symposium, 104 students represented 47 dental schools in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and four Canadian provinces. Twenty dental students from the University of Tennessee presented their projects and acted as hosts for the Symposium.

The Symposium was sponsored by the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry and co-sponsored by the Hinman Dental Society. The Symposium was also supported in part by grants from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the ADEAGies Foundation, the Procter & Gamble Company, the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry Alumni Association and the Tennessee Dental Association Foundation.

The Symposium was opened by Dr. Timothy L. Hottel, Dean of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, followed by Dr. Franklin Garcia-Godoy, Senior Executive Associate Dean for Research, and by Dr. Mustafa Dabbous, founder of the symposium. Dr. Jane C. Puskas, President of the Hinman Dental Society, welcomed

the participants, praised the Symposium organizers and the student participants and presented an overview of the upcoming Hinman Meeting to be held in Atlanta on March 27-29, 2014.

The keynote speaker at the welcoming banquet was Dr. Mary MacDougall, current President of the International Association for Dental Research, Director of the Institute of Oral Health Research, and Endowed Professor and Chair at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. Dr. MacDougall traced her path, starting with an opportunity to participate in research and a simple interest in how such a complex structure as a tooth can be formed, to her prominent role in dental and craniofacial research

This year the Hinman Dental Society is “Aiming for Excellence” from the program for the 2014 Hinman Dental Meeting to the countless ways that the Hinman Dental Society gives back to the dental profession and to dental education. I had the privilege of representing Hinman at the Hinman Student Research Symposium at UT College of Dentistry in Memphis. I was so proud to see the positive impact that the Society has on the future of our profession. Thanks to the financial stewardship of our trustees, the Society sponsors a research symposium that gathered 102 of the best and brightest dental students from all over the country with most of the dental schools represented. By reaching these future dental leaders at such an impressionable time in their careers, we are educating them on the benefits of the Hinman Dental Meeting and encouraging them to support organized dentistry. Dr. Hinman would be so proud to see how effectively the Hinman Dental Society is investing in the future of dentistry. Next year we will celebrate the 20th Hinman Student Research Symposium, so I congratulate our society.

With the Hinman Dental Meeting only three months away, get ready to work! Pre-Registration for the meeting opened on November 12, 2013. Committee meetings will be gearing up soon so if you do not have an assignment, be sure to contact the Hinman office. Membership has many privileges, but committee service at the meeting is expected to keep your membership. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication as we continue “Aiming for Excellence.”

It was great to see so many of our members in Greer, South Carolina for the VOCO/BMW Performance Driving Continuing Education event in November. It was a full day of driving and, yes, even a two hour dental lecture. Thank you to Roy McDonald for organizing all of the great continuing education for our membership. We all had a fun time driving like race car drivers and

recounted how “Life is a Highway,” as will be presented at the upcoming Hinman Dental Meeting in a special video.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to attend the November Membership meeting. Dr. Lee Ann Brady flew in from Arizona to present to more than 200 members the “Top Clinical Tips.” She covered practical approaches from the basic exam (which is no longer so basic) to interesting new preventative treatments (topical antioxidants and probiotics!) and a great summary of the latest restorative methods and materials. Following this great presentation, Hinman recognized our members who have served 30, 40 and even 50 years. We have such a great legacy of service to dentistry and are proud to honor our long-time members.

We look forward to the January 23 Membership Meeting for the entire staff at the Georgia Aquarium featuring the Madow Brothers who will speak on “Office Dynamics.” To top off the year, we will celebrate a fun-filled escape to the Jekyll Island Club Hotel from June 13-15, 2014. So support this great upcoming 2014 Hinman Dental Meeting where we will achieve excellence and gear up to get involved in all the great things that Hinman has to offer.

I hope that you had an enjoyable holiday season and found some time with family and friends. With the New Year comes a renewed focus on Hinman 2014 and I ask of you, the Hinman members, to begin organizing and preparing for your committee assignment as the meeting rapidly approaches. The program is complete, the registration has been open since November and my program chairmen, Dr. Pafford and President Puskas, have put together a strong program. You will find some unique additions to the program such as a redesigned Exhibit Hall and pairing speakers on topics to hear more than one perspective on a subject. There will also be a panel discussion on disturbing trends in dentistry, one-hour courses spread throughout the program, unique hands-on courses and interactive courses. You will find 18 speakers who are new to Hinman this year.

General Chairman’s Message

on target for Hinman 2014

Brian Carpenter

I am pleased to announce that we have reached a reciprocal agreement with the Southeastern Conference of Dental Labs to allow lab technicians to attend some of our courses while their conference meets simultaneously in Atlanta. Thursday will be considered “Lab Tech Day” and we also have exclusive doctor-only hours in the Exhibit Hall from 9-11 a.m. The special events this year are equally impressive with a fashion show at Neiman Marcus, a brewery tour and a golf outing at the prestigious East Lake Golf Club.

The committee meetings will be taking place over the next few months. Please make every effort to attend your meeting and work on a committee at the Hinman meeting to receive an invitation to the Presidents and General Chairman’s Reception, which will return to the Georgia Aquarium this year. I hope you will enjoy our keynote presentation by Dr. Benjamin Carson, a gifted pediatric neurosurgeon and respected author. The Hinman meeting is so unique and that comes from the enthusiastic support of the Society and you, the member. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as General Chairmen and thank you in advance for your hard work and attention to detail.

Many years ago, the leadership of the Hinman Dental Society decided to honor those members who had maintained their membership for 30 years with a commemorative Hinman lapel pin with three garnet stones. We are expanding the tradition this year to include a 40 year marble plaque and a 50 year lapel pin with five purple stones, representing the color of dentistry. The significance of these recognitions is to formally thank and give distinction to those who have worked for many years to maintain and enhance the excellent reputation of the Society, as well as the Hinman Dental Meeting. Those that have been members between 41 and 49 years will be acknowledged this year at their respective committee meetings.

Hinman member, Garrett Sanders, from Decatur recently completed his first Ironman Triathlon at the age of 44. There are different Ironman events throughout the country. Each challenge consists of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run. The idea came to Sanders after his wife, Shara, encouraged him to compete after he finished a half Ironman in Augusta last year. Shara said he told her this event was always on his bucket list.

Sanders took part in a 30-week training period. He said he would spend up to 15 hours per week conditioning. His weekly workouts consisted of every element of the challenge. Sanders said he started out in the morning biking and after work he would bike around Stone Mountain. As he began the event, he said he had one goal – to finish close to 14 hours.

The race began in the early morning hours August 25 in Louisville, Kentucky. Sanders positioned himself in the front of the line for the swim. After the swim, Sanders hopped on his bike for the ride. During the ride, Sanders needed to replenish part of the thousands of calories he would lose that day with different food gels. After he finished the bike trek, Sanders started the last leg of the challenge – the run. During the run, Sanders said his left leg cramped up and he did his best to stretch it out and keep going. He said he would hydrate throughout his run at the relief stations that were set up about every eight miles.

The run came to an end as Sanders crossed the finish line at 13 hours and 41 minutes. He received a medal and took a picture to remember the event as he was rejoined by his support team – his family.

This will not be Sanders’ last competition; he is looking at competing in his next Ironman next May in Texas.

The Official Publication of the Hinman Dental Society

The Hinman Dental Society membership is unique; there are many backgrounds, locations and histories amongst the group. This article is part one of a two-part series highlighting dental families spanning across multiple generations.

Joe Looper, Father Joe Looper Growing up, Joe viewed his dad as a busy man. He was always at a dental, church or political function and enjoyed them all. His dad always set a fine example of how to give back and work hard.

Like most of his dental friends, Joe enjoyed working with his hands, but one of the main reasons he chose dentistry was because of his father’s colleagues. They were and are some of the finest people he has ever been around. Drs. Bill Callahan, George Schuette, Harold Lanier, Pete Jensen and Billy Bentley are just some of the wonderful dentists he knew growing up. Today he is proud of his own colleagues and friends in the dental society. Joe says that, “My dental friends make me a better person.”

Growing up around Hinman was fun for Joe. His best memories are from the annual meeting at Callaway Gardens. Bingo and playing on the railroad tracks behind the swimming pool were good times.

Jeff Pafford,Father Eddie Pafford Growing up in a dental family definitely had an impact on Jeff’s life. Eddie put many childhood lessons in terms of his dental practice. If Jeff wanted a new bike, he was told how many amalgams (minus overhead and taxes, of course) his dad would have to do for him to get that bike. These lessons seem funny now, but they taught him the value of hard work and frugality... and what taxes were.

The most lasting lesson Jeff learned from his father was to treat people right. He repeated this lesson to Jeff habitually. Eddie told him if he treated people right, the way his dad treated his patients, it would all come back to him in the long run. Jeff has tried to live his life and manage his own dental practice the same way.

Pat Yancey, III, Father Pat Yancey, Jr. Pat was able to practice dentistry with his father for 13 years. He will always cherish the time that he got to spend with him. He is also looking forward to practicing with his son, Patrick, who will be a 3rd generation dentist in the Yancey family. Pat’s grandfather influenced Pat Yancey, Jr. to go into dentistry. He fought in the trenches in the Army and said dentists and doctors had it easier during war times. Pat’s dad always encouraged him to be his own boss. His father started his practice over Lee King drugstore in downtown Newnan in 1957 and moved to their current location in 1976. Pat is treating generations of families who have been coming to them since his father began his practice.

Pat remembers attending the annual meeting at Callaway Gardens with his parents and siblings as a child. He remembers playing bingo on Friday nights and playing in a children’s golf tournament on Saturdays. Pat has continued this tradition with his family and still plays in the annual golf tournament with his dad and sons.

Pat’s dad always told him if he got a job at the Hinman Meeting to always do his best. “It is an honor to be a member of this organization.”
