Hinduism Learning Goals: Review: •I will consider which of the 4 Paths to Salvation I would be most attracted to •I will be able to identify the 5 Castes in Hinduism (and Indian culture) and analyze the impact such social structures has on society •I will understand the 4 Stages and 4 Aims in the life of a Hindu and compare these to my own life as a Christian and/or Canadian TODAY: •I will teach a mini lesson on either the naming ceremony, sacred thread ceremony, death ritual, or marriage in Hinduism •I will identify the significance of 3 Hindu symbols •I will begin to understand the Hindu Trimurti and puja (worship) of various manifestations of Brahman

One of the TRIMURTU

- god of CREATION

- said to be the son of Brahman (Supreme Being/Ultimate Reality) and Shakti (Ultimate Female Reality)

- consort is Saraswati (goddess of learning)

- vehicle is a swan or peacock or lotus

Lord of the dance – halo of fire (represents samsara), dwarf (ignorance and human pride), drum (time), flame of destruction, purification and renewel, tiger skin loin cloth (strength), snake (power over evil forces)*he destroys sins of believers and leads them to redemption*must look at the evil as well as the good in the world*suffering so there can be good

- Yellow clothes – symbol of earth and earthly incarnations
