The field is looking wonderful at this time of year and again thanks goes to those who have helped by keeping the grass mowed. A special thanks to Iain Lock who has kindly donated a lawn mower to the JFMC to help with mowing the play area and edges of the field. After a shaky start to the season, June has been very productive. 2 wins out of 2 in the Pratt Cup and a reversal of our Sunday loss at North Nibley in the return fixture in Hillesley.

It was North Nibley whom we met in the opening round of the Pratt Cup at their ground. Hillesley made 174 with Dan 50 not out (retired under cup rules) and Georges B and E making 40 plus, each accruing most of the total. Nibley were bowled out for 117 to maximise our bowling points. Maximum bowling points were then achieved against Oldbury in round 2, as they were all out for 83. Dan, with 50 again, ably supported by Josh W, 24 not out, saw us home without too many wobbles.

In the Sunday game against Nibley our bowling attack was on form again and they were all out for 107 on the hottest day of the year so far. These runs were chased down in 15 overs by Matt Jenkins 51 not out and

George W 43 not out. The competition for being the Top Wicket Taker this season is really heating up with these bowling performances.

Here are the fixtures for the rest of the fixtures for the season. Please note that we are no longer expecting any more Saturday fixtures this season.

Other events There will not be a Toddlers Praise in July or August. Starting again in September.

GOODBYE This is my last time to make a contribution to Hillesley Happenings as the Curate, as I shall be moving on to Chipping Sodbury as Associate Priest mid-July. A big thank you for having me these last two years - I have been able to get to know quite a few of you and will miss seeing folk around on a weekly basis, though will still be living in North Nibley and not working far away, including Horton School. Lin and I have enjoyed our time here especially working in the school and with the church events and worship. We experienced the close community that Hillesley represents looking out for each other. All are welcome at our farewell service on 9th July, or the service of welcome at St Johns, Chipping Sodbury on the 23rd July at 10.30.

In these difficult times for some I would like to put in a little word for the proposed affordable housing in Hillesley. As I have talked to village people, I have noted the enthusiasm to give younger folk a chance to start on the housing chain and also that some of these people might be those who grew up in the village. This was also clear in the 2011 survey which brought about the opportunity for the

Piper proposals. The school is a wonderful asset in the village, which I have regularly experienced at first hand and this year is substantially increasing its intake, due to young families moving in. For it to continue to flourish it needs to have a continuing flow and this will mean either a turnover of older villagers or an increase in population. I do hope that plans which are being tweaked can be accepted to allow these affordable homes to be a reality. The challenge to all of us - churches, pub, school, sports associations and the village community in general, is to make these young families feel at home and provide activities which they need. The school is looking for a new governor. May God bless Hillesley and its wonderful community. Peter (Curate) HILLESLEY CE VA PRIMARY SCHOOL [Tel: 01453 843551 Email: [email protected]]

In recent weeks so many bad events and tragedies have taken place in the wider world. Our children hear and learn about these events through news and social media. We try to talk about these events in an open and truthful way when the children ask questions – and they frequently do so! However, we are very mindful that we want our children to

learn to deal with such issues in a measured way and to look for the positives in all they do, see and hear. We want our pupils to feel safe and happy and able to face the challenges of life with a “can-do” attitude so we try hard to balance the negative news with all that is positive and hopeful. Resilience is a key skill and attribute that we hope to develop and encourage in our pupils. The ability to tackle problems in a reasonable, measured, informed, calm way is something we hope all our pupils will learn before they leave us in Year 6. Team work and the courage to ask for help and to trust and rely on those around us, are also traits that we seek to promote. We do this by celebrating and rewarding these types of behaviours and attitudes. In order to do this we believe that a rounded and broad curriculum is still very important and we are always mindful of this when planning our curriculum and provision.

This term has seen lots of exciting activities going on here at Hillesley School including tennis, cricket and athletics coaching; District field and track competitions; Sports Day; Carnival dance experience workshops; trips to Badminton Estate and Bristol Zoo; Year 6 Leavers’ Service at the Cathedral; year 5 and 6 attendance at a residential camp at Kilve in Somerset; our

Page 4: HILLESLEY HAPPENINGS · Piper proposals. The school is a wonderful asset in the village, which I have regularly experienced at first hand and this year is intake, due to young families

Engineering Week to support and celebrate the Bloodhound car initiative; Year 5 and 6 French lessons; KS2 Samba drumming lesson with a KLB teacher – to list just a few! We like keeping the children busy, both in the classroom and out!

As I write this the Year 6 children are at KLB enjoying their induction day and experiencing what it will be like to be a Year 7 in September. The teachers are busy carrying out end of year assessments and writing reports. At this time of year we always experience a mixture of emotions as we prepare to say goodbye to some and hello to others and also to celebrate the successes of all the children. We wish our Year 6 children – Dulcie, Finley and Lucy, all the very best for their futures at KLB and beyond. We are proud of their achievements and the maturing, caring attitudes they display and we hope that they, as many of our past pupils do, stay in touch and let us know how they are getting on.

We also say thank you and goodbye to two members of staff. Mrs Chappell has had a long association with the school as a parent, governor and TA/Lunch time supervisor. Mrs Wild, who has been a TA here for ten years, also leaves us at the end of term. She is taking early retirement. We will surely miss Mrs Wild and her

enthusiasm for the great outdoors, including running the allotment groups and accompanying many school trips and events, as well as all her hard work supporting children in the classroom. We wish Mrs Chappell and Mrs Wild all the very best for the future.

Some of our governors are also coming to the end of their terms of office. We say goodbye to Rev Peter Fewings and thank him for all the support he has given us during the past two years. We also say thank you and goodbye to Louisa Bury and Jennie Davis who have both been governors for a number of years and have supported the school in many ways, particularly in their roles as Foundation governors.

We wish all our leavers the very best and although we are sad to say goodbye, we share their excitement for their new and different ventures.

As we are nearing the end of the

academic year, I would also like to commend and thank the hard-working staff, governors, FOHS and all the parents and villagers who have supported us this year. We cannot function well and support the children to the best of our abilities without the vital roles you all play – so on behalf of the children I say THANK YOU!

Thank you to those that supported our recent open afternoon.

Our final Celebration Worship for this academic year is at the OCH on Thursday July 13th at 9am and our Leavers’ Service is at St Giles on the last day of term – Friday 21st July at 2pm. All welcome. J. Pedley – Head Teacher

This year's annual GREAT HILLESLEY BIKE RIDE will take place on Sunday 3rd September. The start will be at the War Memorial. There will be a main route, of about 30 miles, and one or two shorter routes. There will be some pubs en route for some necessary refreshment!

Details are starting to be planned, but hopefully the weather will be great and you can book this date. Please let me know if you are interested in coming along, so I can provide a map – the cost would be £2 per map, covering printing and building up a charity fund. Malcolm Woodrow ([email protected])

FASTER BROADBAND UPDATE

At a recent meeting hosted by Gloucestershire Rural Community Council, a representative of the Fastershire organisation (Gloucestershire and Herefordshire County Councils’ broadband procurer) announced that Hillesley and Tresham parish has been included in Phase 2 of the publicly-funded rollout of faster broadband. Fastershire have let a contract to Gigaclear, who will lay a network of fibre cables right to the door by the end of 2018. This should enable broadband speeds of up to 1000Mbps. This applies to all homes in the parish with the exception of twenty five which, it is claimed, do not need the upgrade as they receive speeds exceeding 30Mbps already. To check that your home is included you should go to www.fastershire.com and enter your postcode and house name/number. If you find that your home is one of those affected and you think that you are entitled to fibre, check your broadband speeds and email [email protected] with details of your name, phone number and address as well as the speeds you record. Once Gigaclear have installed the service (you will see a ‘pot’ at the edge of your property) a connection is needed into your property. You have to sign up with an ISP

(internet service provider), which could be Gigaclear but there are others. Unfortunately, the timescale is not being announced, so we’ll just have to keep our ears pinned. Further information can be found on the Fastershire website as well as Gigaclear’s www.gigaclear.com. Dave Darlow

SELF DEFENCE CLASSES IN HILLESLEY

Do you know what you would do if you were ever in a physical or aggressive confrontation? The normal human reaction is to be scared, freeze up, not know what to do to protect yourself…apart from your instincts to defend yourself. My name is John Donaghey and as a Black Belt in Ju-Jitsu and former full-time instructor, I am starting classes in Hopkins Hall every Tuesday evening 8-9pm for anyone that wants to come along and learn how to defend yourself in various situations (should they ever arise!) We will have a gentle warm up to start off with (so wear comfortable, sporty attire, no jeans please!) and then we will learn about how to deal with situations where you are being attacked indifferent ways before a cool down to finish, so please bring some water. The emphasis of this class is to gain confidence, learn how to defend yourself, improve your fitness and to meet new people and have some fun….maybe going for a drink in The Fleece Inn afterwards too! If there is continued interest; I will be purchasing some focus mitts so that we can learn how to punch and kick properly and integrate that into the self-defence element. This class is open to both sexes and there are no age

limits (apart from babies and toddlers of course!). I look forward to seeing you there for what will be a fun and educational class! £5 per adult £3 under 18 yrs of age. If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on 07521 253575. VACCINATIONS Make sure your child has the right vaccinations before they start school, when they come into contact with more potential sources of infection. Highly infectious diseases and potentially fatal diseases such as measles, mumps and diphtheria are still in circulation – if not vaccinated, your child is at risk. Not vaccinating your child puts them at risk. Vaccination protects children for life from a range of highly infectious and potentially deadly diseases. Speak to your GP surgery to make sure your child is protected. A child must receive a number of doses of some vaccines to be fully protected. It is important to complete the vaccinations at the right times or your child may be vulnerable. The reason some diseases have become rarer is because of the success of vaccination programmes. They can still come back and spread rapidly if people are not vaccinated.

To help stop infectious diseases spreading, at least 90% of the local population need to be properly vaccinated. Some vulnerable people – particularly sick children – cannot be vaccinated. They are put at risk if others around them have not been vaccinated as disease can be spread and they are less able to fight it. The full vaccination schedule is available. If in doubt, speak to your GP to check your child has had the right vaccinations and is protected. Vaccines are thoroughly tested for safety and are continually monitored after they are introduced. HAWKESBURY STORES UPDATE After a few weeks in our pop-up shop at The Fox, we are back at ‘home’! And it’s an all-new light, bright and spacious home since the refurbishment. So, what’s new?

☺ Our restyled counter is very smart and gives us more space behind for storing dry cleaning before it goes to be cleaned. It’ll be adapted further to install the computerised till system at a later date.

☺ We have a wonderful new coffee machine and are able to serve fresh coffee, cappuccino, latte or hot chocolate to take away or…

Page 7: HILLESLEY HAPPENINGS · Piper proposals. The school is a wonderful asset in the village, which I have regularly experienced at first hand and this year is intake, due to young families

☺ …drink in, because we have a couple of tables you can sit at while you sip and chat with a friend. We’ll be serving cakes too, in the future.

☺ By the time this is published we should have installed three brand new upright fridges, and three brand new upright freezers. Having more freezer capacity, with glass doors, will transform our frozen food offer – including enabling us to stock a wider range of the delicious Marshfield Farm ice cream range.

☺ Still to come is a small veg chiller, which will really improve our ability to provide high quality fruit and vegetables.

☺ The new flooring looks fresh and modern

☺ Our wooden wall unit of shelving has moved from the left to the right side, has had a fresh coat of paint and contains more products – including our Ecover laundry liquid refill tanks.

Huge thanks to Aggie and Giuseppe at The Fox for hosting us so generously over the past weeks. And thanks to the army of more than 50 volunteers who gave their time, strength and expertise to make the refurbishment and relocation possible.

We’ll be celebrating our first birthday on Saturday 22 July 10am-12pm, one year after our Grand Opening. Please join us for free tasters of new products, the launch of a summer hamper raffle, and the unveiling of the Hawkesbury Stores Hare (to join in with the Cotswold Hare Trail). HAWKESBURY GARDENING CLUB www.hawkesbury-gardening-club.org.uk Terry Truebody [01454 238364]

Meetings are held at 8pm on the 4th Monday of the month in the Methodist Hall in Back Street. Our speaker for May was William Scott who gave an interesting talk entitled ‘Walled Garden at Worcester’. William and his wife took over an abandoned walled garden in Worcester and are slowly restoring it to its former glory. During this time he has disproved some of the ‘expert’ advice about certain gardening fads. For instance, he has found that fan-training fruit trees involves far too much effort and really does not work at all after a few years. Also, he has used companion planting (something you do with friends?) quite a lot but he is sceptical about its efficacy. His results show little improvement over what would have happened if he had not bothered. Interesting eh?

For our July meeting we will invade some club members gardens for a good old nosey-parker and perhaps a stiff tincture or two. The star of the show, of course, will be my new plastic lawn (as some ‘experts’ call it). Once they see it though I bet there’ll be a ‘Hmm dear! I never thought it would look that good. Do you think….?’ or two. Meanwhile, my not-plastic lawn needs so much attention that it keeps me from causing mayhem on the streets and from being a nuisance around the house. See ya! For further information contact Terry Truebody on 01454 238364.
