Welcome to the 49th edition of the Hill Street News. It has been an eventful few months across the Hill Companies and the coming pages are jam-packed with the stories and people that made the winter of 2015/2016 one to remember. So before we dig in on a historic spring/summer construction season, we hope you take a moment to enjoy the updated Hill Street News and the stories that make our company great.

Happy reading and we look forward to celebrating our 50th edition with you in May!

An aerial shot of the construction progress at Outlet Collection Winnipeg, Winnipeg’s first pure outlet shopping destination, offering more than 400,000 sq.ft of shopping and over 100 popular outlet brands. The outlet mall, a partnership between Ivanhoe Cambridge, Forster Projects and Harvard Developments, is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2017.

IMPRESSIONS

Finally, after a rather mild winter, spring has arrived and brought with it a welcome sense of renewal. Before we know it, nature will initiate a fresh splash of colour,...as grass, flowers and trees all begin to blossom under the warmth of the spring sunshine. As our surroundings begin to absorb various shades of green that mark Springtime, it’s a perfect opportunity to be reminded about a different kind of “green” and talk about our company’s ongoing commitment to “go green” every day of the year.

On Friday April 22nd, people all across the globe will come together to celebrate Earth Day, an annual event that celebrates the planet’s environment and raise awareness for what we can all do to help keep our planet healthy and clean for generations to come. At The Hill Companies, the topics of sustainability and smart growth are at the forefront of everything we do and we are constantly looking for ways to reduce our footprint on the environment.

In the real estate world, we recognize that sustainability should be at the core of our buildings and we are committed to obtaining LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BOMA BESt certification with a majority of our properties. These rating systems judge properties on items such as sustainable site development, energy efficiency, water savings, and indoor environmental quality and are the industry standard

when it comes to creating healthy and efficient workspaces. We, as a company, should take pride that a majority of our properties have reached this level of certification including Hill Centre Tower I & II, Mosaic Tower at Hill Centre III, Bank of Montreal Building, Conexus Plaza, FCC Tower, Century Plaza, 201 Portage and our newly opened Agriculture Place.

Looking south of the border, our UFR manufacturing facilities in Clarion, Iowa and Brook, Indiana are also engaged in some pretty incredible sustainability initiatives. They are the largest producer of egg trays in the United States, with each tray being made from 100% reclaimed paper. Their operations also utilize methane gas that is recovered from nearby landfills.

These are just some of the actions we have taken over the years in our efforts to be leaders when it comes to the environment. There are also smaller scale examples of this commitment. All of our companies continue to make great strides toward a “paperless” work environment through digital file sharing and electronic statements and billing. We offer full service waste recycling programs in our buildings. Many of our offices also offer a battery-recycling program for employees looking to dispose of household batteries.

Earth Day affords us an opportunity to celebrate our progress in this area and also assess how we can bring environmentally conscious practices into our own homes and daily lives. It’s time to get engaged!

Happy Reading!

Dave and I, but it was all in good fun. The end result was a ton of laughs and generous dollars raised for an incredibly important cause in our community. Thanks to our employees, we raised over $2,500 which will go directly to anti-bullying initiatives and programs in our city!

Another example of our commitment to our values and creating safe and healthy workplace environments can be found in our “Respect in the Workplace” training that many of you may already be familiar with. This interactive, online program speaks to harassment, bullying and abuse prevention and is a key tool that helps us create the safe and healthy workplaces we have today.

The message I hope to get across to you today, is that we should be proud of our family culture and our ability to promote our values in everything that we do. We all play an important role in creating a safe and healthy workplace, one to be proud of and no effort, small or large goes unnoticed.

Dave Pettigrew and I share a laugh after getting a full serving of whipping cream as part of an anti-bullying fundraiser for the Canadian Red Cross’ “Day of Pink”.

As you are all aware, the success and structure of our company is built on the foundation of four key values; honesty, integrity, trust and respect. We hold our heads high having people and workplaces that exemplify all of these values each and every day. As a family company, similar to any great family these values are not just buzzwords in our mission statement. We live and breathe them in everything that we do and will uphold them no matter what the circumstance; even if it means getting a face-full of whipping cream.

A perfect example of our commitment to these values took place a few weeks ago when our Harvard team in Regina was involved with “PINK DAY,” a national anti-bullying campaign organized by the Canadian Red Cross. Bullying prevention and awareness has been a topic of conversation as a growing issue in recent years, especially in the education and workplace environments, and has long since been a priority for us at the Hill Companies.

Recognizing the importance of this issue in our own workplace and community, our Regina team organized a “Senior Manager Pie-ing” fundraiser in efforts of raising money for the cause. Those who donated the most were offered up the chance to pie some “unlucky bullies” - Dave Pettigrew and myself. As you can see from the photo, things got a little messy for

Individuals who consume 25% of their daily calories from added sugar, carbonated drinks, or processed food are three times more likely to develop heart disease

CONSCIOUS CORNER

Ever thought of the fist sized wonder that keeps your entire body doing its miraculous job! It speeds up at the sight of someone we love…and with Valentine’s Day just passed, it’s my hope that HEARTS were fluttering all over the world on February 14th.

So the question of this month’s article is “How do we take better care of our precious tickers?” Freelance writer for “The Goodlife Magazine” Sharon Liao says “Unfortunately, next to breast and ovarian cancer, heart disease is the number one killer of women”. She goes onto share “our hearts definitely deserve basic maintenance” In my opinion, I think our hearts deserve MORE than that. Research continues to grow that as a nation we are indeed neglecting our heart as a vital organ, and its grand purpose within the human body. However, there is a hopeful side, says Nieca Goldberg, M.D., medical director for New York University Center for Woman’s Health. “Your lifestyle makes up about HALF of your heart disease risk.”

Throughout the magazine article entitled “The Heart Health Playbook,” TV’s famed, Dr. Oz says “You have a huge opportunity to affect how your heart performs for you…you can make it stronger and younger by the way you eat, exercise and inevitably how you respond…especially by not impulsively reacting to life.” Speaking of LIFE, I want to share this cool slogan from an ad I saw over the Christmas holidays that said, Come visit us at Massage Envy…and we’ll help you get through the SIDE EFFECTS of this wonderful thing we call LIFE.” It worked on me and I booked one.

“If your HEART was in charge, it would ask you to abort STRESS altogether” says Donald Edmondson, Ph.D. of Columbia University’s Center for Behavioral Cardiovascular Health. Since we know this is quite impossible, Edmondson strongly states, “It’s your reaction, not the actual situation that controls your body’s stress response.” When we react our HEART triggers the release of inflammatory hormones called cortisol. He recommends… “No more white knuckling your dilemmas.”

Also lethal to your dedicated pumping heart is…SUGAR. Over the Holidays, my three year old nephew is ogling his cousins while they inhale copious amounts of Christmas treats. One day while we are hanging out, he looks straight at me after sneaking a snack and asks “Aunty Jan what u eating, is it sugar?

I pause, but can barely contain my laughter.

More seriously, Goldberg emphasizes, sugar breaks down the arteries, the organs, including the heart. He states, individuals who consume 25% of their daily calories from added sugar, carbonated drinks, or processed food are three times more likely to develop heart disease, than those that keep it less than 10%. Did you know, a 12oz. can of coke holds 40 grams of sugar (20 sugar cubes) And repeatedly consumed, it can raise the heart attack risk by 20%. On a gentler note, I suggest if you’re really addicted to Coca-Cola, try switching to Diet Coke or Coke Zero, your HEART will LOVE you for it.

“Ideally, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night to function at their optimal best”

“Killer Sugar” is found hiding in delicious salad dressings and condiments. My favourite, BBQ sauce contains 14 grams of sugar in 2 tbsp. These days I stick to olive oil dressings and vinaigrettes. While we think we’re getting our probiotic fix with fruit yogurt...some 6 oz servings may contain up to 32 grams of sugar (16 sugar cubes) so just in case, always check the label!

Switching gears to that of EXERCISE…we all know its positive impact on the heart. “Interval training invites the heart to work harder and pump more blood with each beat. It also builds muscle strength and lowers blood pressure says Exercise specialist, Martin Gibala Ph.D. Choosing to take stairs over escalators and brisk walks gets the heart pumping. Even ten mins three times a day makes a huge difference.

The last topics of consideration for your HEART are that of beauty SLEEP and STRESS. “Ideally, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night to function at their optimal best. If one is not feeling deeply rested in the morning, your most likely not sleeping as deeply as your body needs?” States Dr. David Rapoport, NYU s medical sleep director. “Electronics use, such as watching TV is an absolute No No before bed, Rapoport adds. “Poor sleep patterns over a long term can increase the risk for heart disease.

Some evenings, while I was writing this article, I would take tea break. Little did I know that I was actually doing something marvelous for my heart because most black teas, lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. White teas, aid in lowering blood pressure, ease arthritic pain, kill bacteria and boost the immune system. Lastly, good old green tea (seldom good without a hint of honey) strengthens our blood vessels. Best of all…promotes a slimmer you.

So I toast you with my cup of tea and a strong visualization that we are setting the stage for nothing but a PERFECT and HAPPY HEART.

GET ACTIVE

Getting and staying active can reduce your risk of heart disease. It can also be a great mood booster and stress buster.

Do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week to ensure your heart is getting the exercise it needs.

As far as city skylines go, what Regina lacks in quantity it sure makes up for in quality. The sweeping view of picturesque downtown Regina offers a beautiful blend of vintage and post-modern architecture that provides a glimpse into the growth and development of the “Queen City” over the last century. At the forefront of this picture are the crown jewels of the Regina skyline, Hill Centre Tower I, II and Mosaic Tower at Hill Centre III. With their 11° splayed walls and blue-semi reflective glass, these Harvard owned and managed properties are seen by many as symbols of the city and have become the most recognized buildings in downtown Regina. But what makes these landmarks truly special is what happens behind the scenes, and the story of how Victoria Gabel, a Property Manager for Harvard Property Management, helps make the Queen City’s commercial castles among the city’s most desirable properties.

Victoria’s story and career path to Harvard begins back in the year 1998 in her hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Having grown up with a distinct passion and love for horses and equestrian sport, Victoria’s earlier days in Ontario involved her travelling to various horse shows both locally and around the country; a practice that ultimately formed her incredible attention to detail, patience, and organization skills that she is known for today. However, it was her first job with Westinghouse, a global electrical distribution company, where Victoria’s true skill set and potential became apparent. After several years of learning the industry and gaining valuable experience in the electrical construction industry, Victoria was presented with a new opportunity. Schneider Electric, another global company that manufactures electrical distribution products with a specialty in energy management and automation, had an opening in their Regina office and was

interested in having Victoria join their team. After some deliberating and soul searching, Victoria ultimately decided to leave the comforts of home and pursue a fresh start in the Queen City.

Despite the hard decision to move away from home, Victoria thrived in her new surroundings and following the closure of Schneider Electric’s Regina office, continued to build on her already impressive skill set with companies like Brookfield Johnson Controls and SNC Lavalin in the facilities management industry. While perhaps not realizing it at the time, Victoria was quietly building an impeccable resume for a career in real estate, which was just around the corner in the not-too-distant future.

There is no question that 2006 was a big year for our real estate team. We had just added Conexus Plaza to

our portfolio following an acquisition in the summer of that year and were in the planning stages with our new retail development “Currents of Windermere” in Edmonton, Alberta . But in hindsight, one of our company’s biggest acquisitions came later that year when Victoria Gabel was introduced to the world of Harvard and property management, having been hired by Steve Enns in the Fall. She was brought on as a Property Manager and, under the guidance of Steve Enns and her operations team, Victoria was “given the keys” to her portfolio of properties which included the iconic Hill Centre Towers I and II. “I can still remember getting my portfolio, and being blown away,” recalls Victoria as she reminisces about her early days with Harvard. “These buildings were cornerstones of the company and landmarks of our city…and I was now responsible for them.” Despite the challenge, Victoria tackled this steep learning curve by relying heavily on her previous experience and absorbing as much knowledge and information from others around her as she could. “I was lucky back then and still am today to be surrounded by such a talented group of people. There’s a lot of knowledge in this company and I am grateful to be able to work with such an incredible team.”

Nearly ten years and several major projects later, Victoria has become a leader and trusted resource of knowledge in all areas of building operations and property management for Harvard – an accomplishment that has earned her the nickname “Queen Victoria” around the office. And like any good

leader, Victoria carries a large responsibility in overseeing the day-to-day property management for several of our class-A office towers in downtown

Regina, a demanding role that includes being a liaison with our tenants, financial management, administration, reporting, operations, and maintenance.

While her portfolio has certainly evolved over the years, the one constant in Victoria’s group remains the Hill Centre Towers I & II which have remained under her care since day one. “The Hill Towers are sort of like the calm and steady properties of our portfolio. For the most part we are very comfortable with the buildings and understand how to operate them at a high level.” On the other side of the spectrum is the “baby brother” to Hill Towers I & II – Mosaic Tower at Hill Centre III – which was completed in 2012 and, at the time, was the first office tower built in Regina in over twenty years. As luck would have it, it also became the newest addition to Victoria’s portfolio, giving her the full trio of Hill Tower properties and a new challenge to tackle with a modern building full of new technology and amenities.

Victoria was involved early on in the creation of Mosaic Tower at Hill Centre III, having been on the development team during the construction of the tower; a role that had her provide property management expertise while creating the management and operating plan for the building and its rare amenities (which include a fitness centre, public art gallery, conference centre and roof top patio). “Mosaic Tower is a whole different animal when it comes to operations and management. No other property can offer these types of amenities to its tenants...and while it certainly has had its challenges for us, we have overcome them well and utilized these spaces to set us apart from competitors…” Rounding out Victoria’s other properties in her portfolio are the Bank of Montreal Building, Gordon Building, Hill Centre Parkade, and pedestrian linkages between the buildings.

‘‘Change and challenge are part of the daily fabric of property management, and the experience I’ve gained through Harvard is immeasurable. And I can’t say enough about all of the people that are a part of the Harvard family….no matter what comes up, people are willing to help out in ways you can’t imagine. It’s pretty special. ‘‘

When asked what her key to success real estate has been, Victoria emphasized that experience and customer service has, and always will be king. “Nobody in property management goes to school to do this kind of thing…” comments Victoria. “Many of these skills can only come from years of experience and placing a priority on customer service. As property managers, we are truly on the front lines each day dealing with our tenants so customer service is always of utmost importance to ensure they are always looked after. The other major key is to surround yourself with the best people in the business – and Harvard is filled with talented people!”

Another interesting aspect to Victoria’s career is that her experience and success has opened up other doors and opportunities for her in the real estate industry. She is currently serving her second term as President of the Regina chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA); a platform that allows her to develop relationships with other industry professionals and to share her expertise with other building management personnel. On top of this, she was also a leading force behind bringing BOMA Canada’s National Conference – “BOMEX” - to the Queen City for the first time later this year. As a member of the steering committee for the event, Victoria will play a big role in the execution of the event and understands just how important it is for our city and for our company. “Having BOMEX come to Regina is a great opportunity to showcase what our city has to offer. We live in an amazing city, with great food and culture. Not to mention the many outstanding properties we’ll be showcasing to property management professionals from across the country!”

At the Hill Companies, we are often reminded of our company’s 113-year history and the many risks we’ve had to take over the years to ensure our growth and success. But the same can also be seen in many of our employees like Victoria. It’s been nearly ten years since the equestrian enthusiast and electrical industry employee took a chance and accepted a new challenge in the Queen City, and the results speak for themselves. In a decade where our company growth has reached incredibly new heights, the same can be said for Victoria whose impact and leadership can be found each and every day in and around our commercial “castles” of downtown Regina. “Change and challenge are part of the daily fabric of property management, and the experience I’ve gained through Harvard is immeasurable. And I can’t say enough about all of the people that are a part of the Harvard family….no matter what comes up, people are willing to help out in ways you can’t imagine. It’s pretty special.”

If you frequently run multiple programs simultaneously, your desktop can get extremely cluttered. This can get annoying if you’re working on one program and want to minimize all the other windows -- in previous versions of Windows you had to minimize them individually.

With Windows 7’s “shake” feature, though, you can minimize every window except the one in which you’re currently working -- in a single step. Click and hold the title bar of the window you want to keep on the desktop; while still holding the title bar, shake it quickly back and forth until all of the other windows minimize to the taskbar. Then let go. To make them return, shake the title bar again.

You can accomplish the same thing by pressing the Window key-Home key combination -- although doing that is not nearly as much fun.

A wise, hat-wearing cat once proclaimed “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,”

This was the perfect theme for the United Way’s annual celebration of “Dr. Seuss Day” - a day dedicated to the famous author’s birthday and sharing his story-telling flair with countless children across the country.

This year’s event took place on February 26th and The Hill Companies were proud to be involved in this year’s big day by having employees from our Regina offices volunteer and join inner-city students in reading the classic Dr. Seuss tales we all know and love.

The volunteer group was invited to Seven Stones Community School and were joined by members of the Regina Rams Football team, including our former summer student and current Rams quarterback Noah Picton. While there, each volunteer was paired up with a first-grade student to read the classics “Green Eggs and Ham”, “the Lorax”, “The Cat in the Hat”, “Horton Hears a Who!” and “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”.

At the end of the visit, students, teachers and volunteers all came together to sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss and enjoy some cake. Every student was provided with their own Dr. Seuss book and t-shirt to keep for themselves.

Special thanks go out to our volunteer team of Katherine Somers, Nicole Templeton, Sanam Amirli, Danielle Kuffner, Curtis Goldsney, Corrine Johnson and Mike Alport for spreading the importance of literacy and being excellent ambassadors for our company.

At the Hill Companies, we’re fortunate to have some pretty amazing people in our Human Resources department. One of them is Sarah Freitag, who many of you know as Harvard’s expert Human Resources Administrator in Regina. Sarah is a seven-year veteran of the Hill Companies and has made a name for herself with her ability to find and recruit the talented people we have today. But, what you might not realize about Sarah is some of her most valuable time is spent outside the office walls, making a difference in the lives of others and giving a new appreciation to the term ‘human resources’.

We caught up with Sarah to learn about her involvement with “Ignite” – a local not-for-profit that offers a second chance for those looking to improve their education and earn their Grade 12 diploma.

IGNITING A SECOND CHANCESARAH FREITAG’S MENTORSHIP JOURNEY WITH IGNITE! ADULT LEARNING CORPORATION

12 HILL STREET NEWS | Edition 49

LETTING LOOSE WITH DR. SEUSSHARVARD TEAMS UP WITH UNITED WAY REGINA FOR “DR. SEUSS DAY”

Q: SARAH, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT IGNITE AND HOW YOU CAME TO BE INVOLVED WITH THE PROGRAM?

For sure – “Ignite Adult Learning Corporation” is a local not-for-profit that provides education and life skills for applicants to receive their Grade 12 GED. They take in a large number of people each year between the ages of 18-30 who, for a variety of reasons, have dropped out of grade 12 in their past and are now at a point in their life where they can’t make a decent income or can’t get off social assistance and want to build a better life for themselves and their families. If the applicant is accepted into the program, they are treated like an employee and are expected to be committed to the 32-week program (7.5 hours/day, 5 days a week). While in the program, the apprentices learn everything from technical skills like computer, business, and communication training to more life skills like fitness, nutrition, finance management, and resume writing.”

“Harvard has always been a longtime supporter of Ignite, but my first introduction to the program came about three years ago when I was invited to attend their Graduation Ceremony and I saw what an incredible impact the program had. Shortly thereafter, Ignite launched a mentorship program and were looking for mentors to come on board as another level of support for the apprentices. They ended up reaching out to us at Harvard and I was approached by Hiedi and Mo to see if I would be willing to help out.”

Q: WALK US THROUGH YOUR ROLE AS A MENTOR WITH THE IGNITE PROGRAM

As a mentor, I am paired up with one of the apprentices going through the Ignite GED program and am there to be an additional support system for them on their journey. However, a lot of the support we provide them isn’t “career” oriented support – although that certainly is a small part of it. But as a mentor, you’re more there for them just to talk to about whatever obstacles they may be facing in their lives and to offer a neutral, unbiased ear when they need it. It’s unfortunate, but many of the people in this program come from backgrounds and families that don’t believe in education, so in a lot of cases these people may end up feeling alone when trying to better themselves. So as a mentor I am there to make sure this isn’t the case and that they always have someone to come to when they need some support and encouragement.

Q: HOW MANY APPRENTICES HAVE YOU WORKED WITH IN YOUR TIME WITH IGNITE?

I have been with Ignite for three years and have been able to be a mentor for five cycles of the program – so I have been able to be a mentor to five people so far. I’ve also been lucky enough to see all five successfully go on to graduate from the program which is a very rewarding experience to help play a small role in such a positive step in their lives. It’s also great to stay in touch with them and see them

continue to grow. My most recent apprentice actually just accepted a job with an accounting firm in Regina which was a huge accomplishment for her and her family.

I am now on to my sixth cycle and actually just had the opportunity to meet my new apprentice Crystal the other day. She is a 29 year old single mom who dropped out of high school when she was pregnant. Prior to making the decision to come to Ignite, she was working two jobs just to survive (one of which was a seven hour night shift). It’s stories like this that truly make you feel appreciative for everything you have and wanting to help others who may not have had the same opportunities in their lives.

Q: WHAT IS THE BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FOR YOU FROM BEING PART OF THIS PROGRAM?

I think the biggest thing I’ve taken from this is just how lucky we all are. Being a part of this program has really opened my eyes to the socio-economic problems we have in our own city and how we can change that. To be honest, I think for myself and many of us here, it was just expected that you follow the path of high school, post secondary and on to a meaningful career. But unfortunately for so many in our city this couldn’t be further from reality. The social, economic and psychological barriers these people must face, just to get their grade 12 is staggering, and is something I’ve seen first hand. For example, one of the apprentices I was paired up with was a 20 year old male who had never been outside the city of Regina. Can you imagine being 20 years old and never having the opportunity to experience anything outside your own city? This was a huge shock to me as it’s hard to imagine someone that age never having the opportunity to travel, even to a city a few hours away. Fortunately, there are programs like Ignite that are working to reverse this and give people a second chance to improve their lives.

Q: HOW DOES YOUR WORK WITH IGNITE AND HARVARD TIE TOGETHER?

I think what the reward is anytime I have the ability to help someone in our company and they say thank you…to me that’s why I do my job and it’s the same thing with the Ignite program. To these people, just giving your time, even if it’s just an hour every so often, makes a world of difference to them and can potentially mean the difference between a negative decision or a decision that will help their future.

What a difference a year makes – particularly in Alberta. In the past 12 months we have seen a new provincial government, a new federal government and a dramatic decline in crude oil and natural gas prices. Election promises and new government policies have created significant uncertainty within the energy sector. That uncertainty, combined with the price collapse, has brought new investment in the sector to a virtual halt and has resulted in massive layoffs throughout the province as exploration programs and energy related construction projects are cancelled or postponed. While cycles within the oil and gas sector are a common occurrence, this one is particularly severe with almost everyone expecting a long, slow recovery.

Commodity prices will recover, although it is impossible to predict when. Of greater concern is access to international markets. Canada’s ability to sell its vast crude oil and natural gas production is dependent on the delivery

system that gets these products to market. Opposition to new pipelines and processing plants from a variety of groups is well publicized and it’s anyone’s guess as to which of these proposed projects ultimately gets approved. All that is certain is that the process will be slow.

For the first time in its 34 year history, Harvard Energy will incur an operating loss this year but we are in a strong financial position, unlike many of our peers. Layoffs have been the order of the day as many companies struggle to reduce costs. Fortunately, Harvard Energy has been able to retain its entire staff and is well positioned to weather this storm and possibly make some strategic acquisitions during these challenging times. While the outlook for 2016 is not good, we are cautiously optimistic that 2017 will produce a much brighter picture.

2015 was a record breaking year for Western Surety (WSC). Our written premiums broke an all-time record, totaling $24,637,966; a 3.4% increase from 2014. After successfully mitigating a number of claims from 2013/2014, WSC actually had a negative claims ratio in 2015 with ‘recoveries’ in excess of $250,000.

Scott Donald, President and CEO, says the strong growth last year can be attributed to the dedicated work of WSC’s highly skilled staff across the country. “It was a true team effort in regards to premium production as we had significant increases in the Toronto and Halifax branch offices which augmented our consistent Western

Canada premium. I am also pleased to see our trend of premium growth and no new claims continue into the first few months of 2016.”

“There are many challenges ahead, including the impact of the energy industry on the overall economy and construction in particular. And there is sure to be changes in policies that will be implemented by the recently elected Liberal federal government as well as by a smack number of new provincial governments,” adds Donald. “WSC is in a great place to meet those challenges, thanks to our growing and dedicated staff and our continual commitment to service excellence.”

With the nice weather, we were also treated to some new digs on the 21st floor. Everyone has been diligent with purging their offices & work stations. It’s amazing how fast the big blue recycling bins filled up. Great Job everyone with the purge! Special thanks to Hiedi Pearson, Crystal Pellerin & Annette Keaveney for planning and getting us organized. As of mid-February, all of our Corporate Accounting staff are now located on the 21st floor.

Accountants are busy getting everything in order for the audit and upcoming tax season. Our friends from Deloitte will be here over the next couple of months, and can be found on the 21st floor Mezzanine. We are looking forward to another smooth year-end.

Sophie Nathanail is winding down on Western Surety’s Internal Audit. She has also completed her first IT Internal Audit. With the ever changing landscape of internet and electronic communication, cyber security has become a major issue within all industries. Sophie attended Deloitte’s Cyber Security workshop held in late January.

Congratulations to Ting Meng who received her CPA designation. Terry, Pauline, Cathy, Cassandra, Anna, Sanam and Si joined Ting to congratulate and celebrate her achievement at the Convocation Ceremony held on Saturday, February 6th at the Queensbury Convention Centre.

April 29th, we will sadly say goodbye to cooperative education student Jalynn Jansen, who will be returning to the U of R and for her 4th year of studies in the Paul J. Hill School of Business. We wish Jalynn all the best in her continued education.

Now that the stress and excess of the holiday season are behind us, the unusually mild winter we have been experiencing on the prairies has helped everyone escape the doldrums that naturally tend to set-in after the last Christmas ornament is put away. It is a welcome change to be able to enjoy the great outdoors without the typical blast of cold, snow and multiple layers of clothing.

The New Year for HPMI began with the commencement of audit planning. The auditors have arrived and audit season is currently well underway. In addition, the annual PAL planning and appraisal processes are near completion.

On January 4, Shawn Gerrie, joined our Edmonton team in the role of Property Accountant. In mid-February, Jake Bayhonan and Kevin Marion were welcomed to our Edmonton and Saskatoon teams, respectively. Jake began his role as the Building Operator for Windermere and Windermere Crossing in addition to assisting with Edmonton’s third party portfolio. Kevin will be located at the SaskPower office in Saskatoon assisting with the facility management at the SaskPower property, in addition to Building Operator duties for Preston Crossing.

In early February, it was announced that Angie Gibson (HPMI Calgary) was promoted from Property Administrator to the position of Senior Property Administrator. Over the last seven years, Angie has worked her way up from the front reception desk to her current role. Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

On the afternoon of February 15, Eau Claire Market in Calgary hosted a Family Fun Day Event. The event drew thousands of people to the mall with numerous activities and entertainment. Guests enjoyed a variety of performers including a Chinese Lion Dance, Youth Singers and a magician. There were a number of booths set up in addition to carnival games, a face painter and a tattoo artist. Thank-you to all of the volunteers who helped make this event a great success!

In closing, we would like to acknowledge Doug McBain (Regina) who achieved five years of service with HPMI on March 1. Congratulations Doug!

Phase 1 of the Urban Village is currently underway, with two buildings under construction and set to open in 2016. The first will be a 17,000 sq.ft Designer Shoe Warehouse that will open on April 14, 2016. Also, because urban villages typically include dining and leisure retailers, Browns Social House will open next to Designer Shoe Warehouse.

The second building will contain three levels of residential above 10-12 retail stores and will be ready early 2017. To date, approximately 50% of this mixed-use building is leased to services, a coffee shop, and other retailers that will make the The Village a lively community gathering place. Stay tuned in the coming months of 2016 as we set to announce future retailers coming to this exciting component of the Grasslands project.

The future site of Audi Winnipeg, which will be located in our Seasons development, was the scene for a groundbreaking ceremony on March 1. Formerly St. James Audi, the new location will no longer share space with its sister Volkswagen operation and the entire team is excited to see this great dealership come to Seasons.

Seasons continues to generate substantial tenant interest in all aspects of the project. Our joint venture with Ivanhoé Cambridge for the construction of a 400,000 square foot enclosed fashion outlet mall is progressing nicely and is on pace for a Spring 2017 opening. The work is easily visible from both of the major roads adjacent to the site which has created another surge in interest from the public and development community.

And then there was a baker’s dozen ...

I am delighted to announce that as of February 1st, 101.3 KRAZE FM Red Deer has officially joined the Harvard family.

With seven commercial FM radio stations licensed to serve the city and surrounding area, Red Deer is one of Canada’s most competitive radio markets. If the same per capita ratio was applied to Calgary the result would be greater than 70 commercial FM radio stations.

The addition of KRAZE FM creates a pairing of two complimentary and distinct station brands, KRAZE FM (Current Hits) and CRUZ FM (Greatest Hits). This allows us to strengthen our commitment to the community of Red Deer and central Alberta market, and to better compete on both a local and national level.

Over the past nine years, Harvard has expanded its broadcast footprint from its home base in the province of Saskatchewan into Alberta. Currently Harvard operates six radio stations in Saskatchewan and now seven stations in Alberta. Our radio stations are renowned for their local focus, strong brands and innovative formats, and KRAZE FM fits like a glove.

A huge thank you to an outstanding integration team - Daryl Holien, Angela Prokop, Chris Terpsma, Christian Hall, Gary Brasil, Jenna James, Sarah Ashley-Hewitson, Brent DeKelver, Taj Hill, Tyler Godsman and our friends at HDI Shauna, James and Tina your hard work and attention to detail made the transition seamless.

The CRUZ turtles with our very own, April O’Neil (Nicola Crosbie, from Crosbie & Cross) took home the coveted “Shameless Self Promotion” Award competing against 18 other media teams. Turtley awesome, dude!

HOT 107’s Santa Paws: Stuff the Studio returned for a fourth year collecting food & pet items for the Edmonton Humane Society to ensure that the animals still waiting for their “forever homes” had a happy holiday too! Listeners who donated were entered for a draw to win Justin Bieber tickets for his sold out concert this summer.

100.5 CRUZ FM ran their 2nd Annual “30 Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” promotion in February. Each day the CRUZ Crew did a good deed that included, among other things, painting an office, handing out free coffee, visits from Cupid, and helping at the local soup kitchen. Next up is a staple in the CRUZ world, “Name That Hit!” We’re looking forward to giving out more free cash to listeners who can “Name That Hit”...last time we played, a CRUZ listener walked away with over $4,000!

MIX 103.7 held its 2016 edition of “MIX Mash for Cash” in February, where listeners tried to guess what four songs we’ve mashed together. Each time the game is played we hear stories of listeners coming together to try and help one another to win the cold, hard, cash! Coming up this spring we’re also excited to present Sean Paul in Fort McMurray, and are sending a ton of winners to see him live, as well as some extra lucky winners to meet the man himself!

We’d like to wish congratulations to our Media Marketing Advisor Tracy Morine who recently got engaged to Mike Peters! As we say goodbye we also say hello… We recently said farewell to our News Director Evan Cooke, Morning Show Co-Host Pam Kirby and after some five years with MIX, our General Manager Don Grose. While we will miss them all, we are ecstatic to welcome Taylor Braat to the team as our new Creative Assistant & Swing Announcer and our still fresh-to-the-team news reporter Chris Vandenbreekel was promoted to News Director. Last but not least we welcome Craig Picton back to the MIX team as our new General Manager. It’s not Craig’s first time at MIX, as he was the Program Director when the station launched! We look forward to many successful years with Craig at the wheel!

In October of 2015, the staff at GX94 and Fox FM welcomed a student from the Yorkton Regional High School as part of work experience for one of his classes. River is a 17 year old boy with autism and has an incredible passion for radio. Along with River’s passion for Fox FM, he can also tell you about different stations across the country and his favourite DJ’s. His love for his job made him one of a kind, and although his dream is to be on air, he always had a smile doing whatever he was set out to do that day. River has become such a huge part of our radio family that when his semester came to an end and he no longer required work experience, the whole team felt the same way and didn’t want him to leave.

General Manager Angie Norton knew she had to find a way to keep him around, so River was offered a part time job where he will help in promotions and engineering (which was a dream come true for him). He has started his work with us and continues to learn about the radio industry and his love for it grows each day. We’re so proud that his infectious smile, laughs, and dance moves are here with us to stay.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Stacie and Joel from 96.3 Cruz FM’s Morning Show hit the streets of Saskatoon “crashing” Super Bowl house parties! Each house they stopped at received a case of refreshments from Bud Light, $75 to spend at KFC for game snacks, and souvenir t-shirts from Discovery Marketing! We also threw in some Cruz swag, and Broncos and Panthers coloured Mardi Gras beads for everyone in the house. Although we could only make it to 10 different houses, we received almost 100 entries in just a few short weeks. We look forward to this promotion every year, and this year has been the best one yet… We can’t wait to do it again!

620 CKRM, MY92.1 and 104.9 the WOLF are proud to have been chosen by the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce to be the Presenting Radio Media Sponsor for this year’s prestigious Paragon Awards. This annual awards showcase is being held April 1st and celebrates business excellence. Harvard Broadcasting has been nominated for an award in two categories - Community Alliance and Community Involvement.

For the fourth year in a row, “Queen City Rocks” is back and is proudly presented by Regina’s Rock Station 104.9 The Wolf, The Exchange, and Long and McQuade Musical Instruments. This year’s contest promises to be bigger than ever and ready to put Saskatchewan’s best musical acts on stage. Unlike many ‘battle of the band’ competitions, Queen City Rocks approaches things a little differently. And we’re not just talking about the ‘no entry fee’ part. We’re genuinely interested in opening up this avenue for exposure and helping to bring the Saskatchewan music scene together, fostering communication and collaboration between acts with the end-game of strengthening the community as a whole. The competition runs Mid-February to Mid-March.

MY92.1 Morning hosts Rustie and Greg (and the photo bomber on crutches) had the opportunity to join 30 Canadian radio stations that broadcasted live from Sandals Ochi Beach Resort in Jamaica this past January. While there, they participated in a unique experience operated by the Sandals Foundation and had the chance to release newly hatched sea turtles into the Caribbean Sea as part of an ongoing conservation project to protect and revitalize endangered species. Sea turtles play an integral part in healthy oceans and can live to be more than 100 years old.

Saskatchewan’s #1 Sports Talk Show “SPORTS CAGE” is producing the first ever “Coach’s Kick-Off Breakfast” this Spring. 620 CKRM will offer listeners an opportunity to win invitations to attend this exclusive event to meet new Riders Head coach Chris Jones, along with some of his coaching staff and players.

Over four weeks in December, we asked our listeners to join our “Music Advisory Panel” and rate the music we play in one of our largest surveys yet. Geoff Buckle listened to over 700 songs letting us know what he thought of each one, and in doing so he won a cheque for $929! X92.9 hosts weekly music surveys on a smaller scale and awards a listener for their efforts with concert tickets or gift cards each week.

Distracted driving is a serious issue in Alberta. To encourage drivers to put an end to this dangerous behaviour, The Calgary Police launched the #CrotchesKill campaign, encouraging Albertans to pledge to not drive distracted. It was confirmed by the Calgary Police Service that X Afternoons with Beckler & Seanna were the first radio station hosts in Calgary to take the pledge! Kudos to them for making the pledge.

100.7 CRUZ FM is proud to be the media sponsor of the 2nd annual “Sliced Red Deer” competition. Red Deer’s top chefs are competing in a head-to-head battle where they prepare dishes from mystery ingredients revealed to them at the last moment.

The restaurants are divided into two teams - Team Vinnie and Team Meg. Each week, two restaurants prepare their dishes with the winning dish moving on to the finals. This is great exposure for CRUZ as each episode is currently being taped and will soon air on Shaw Community TV Red Deer.
