Student & Youth Services

On February 9, Ready To Learn (RTL) staff met with Laura Bumba from the Girl Scouts of Southern

Nevada. They demonstrated how the Girl Scout Super Troop curriculum designers can access teaching

materials available from Vegas PBS to supplement their health curriculum. Using the Watch, Play,

Explore, Share Transmedia framework, staff modeled how to plan a lesson to complement the topic of

“Healthy Eating," incorporate a variety of video clips, interactive stories, and hands-on activities from

PBS Learning Media and the PBS KIDS Lab. This summer the Girl Scouts are going to test a new

Vegas PBS curriculum that will be implemented during the upcoming 15-16 school year.

On February 24, Coordinators Charles Sinicki and Craig Cuddihy presented to UNLV Educational Pre-

Service students on the various resources that Vegas PBS provides. Over 28 students attended this

training. Dr. Karen Grove emphasized the need for new teachers to have a variety of technology skills,

including access to the Common Core Standards.

On March 20, Debra Solt and Cary Huddleston participated as Mock Student Interviewers at the CSN

2nd Annual Speed Networking Event. During the event they met with 23 college students and discussed

internship opportunities with Vegas PBS.

On April 11, Coordinator Chuck Sinicki attended the Girl Scout LEAD conference held at the Alexis

Park Hotel, where Girl Scout leaders discussed plans for the upcoming Girl Scout year. Additionally,

The Vegas PBS Keeping Kids Fit program held eight Workshops for 112 Girl Scouts during the month

of April.

On April 16, Jami Miller hosted a Vegas PBS information booth at the Career and College Expo event;

sponsored by the Pearson Community Center. The event exposed 150 high school junior and seniors to

potential careers, and training opportunities where they could receive workforce certifications through

Vegas PBS.

On April 21, The Vegas PBS

Described and Captioned Media

Center (DCMC), in collaboration with

CCSD Low Incidence Disabilities

Team (LIDT) Deaf and Hard of

Hearing Department, hosted the 2nd

Annual Spring Fling event. This

awards ceremony and luncheon

recognizes graduating seniors, and

high school students who are deaf and

hearing impaired. A motivational

speech was provided by Crystina

Scott of ASL Communications, along

with an overview of the DCMC library and history of PBS and Closed Captioning. Spring Fling was

funded by Vegas PBS DCMC, CCSD LIDT, SAUCE restaurant and ASL Communications, and

concluded with raffled prizes, and a surprise dedication for retiring teacher, Susan Ladrie- Mackey by

her students. The event attracted 68 CCSD students and 30 professionals.

During the month of May, 63 Girl Scouts from eight Girl Scout troops attended several Fitness and

Nutrition workshops, as part of the Keeping Kids Fit initiative. The Girl Scouts learned about physical

fitness, various exercise activities that

make fitness fun, and how to read

nutrition facts and proper portion sizes.

The Keeping Kids Fit initiative will be the

summer pilot for the Women’s

Engagement Council’s pre-teen health

month, which will take place next year.

On May 15, in collaboration with Sue

Johnston, of CCSD Low Incidence

Disabilities Team Vision Impaired

Services Department; the DCMC hosted a

field trip for four blind & visually

impaired students. Five teachers, who

work and assist with the students regularly, were also in attendance. New accounts were created and

media was selected by the students and also their teachers.

On May 30, Jami Miller joined 7 Executives from Caesars Entertainment, and 3 Coordinators from

Teach For America at Chaparral HS. The collaboration connected high school seniors and their families

to workforce training, and certification programs that are available through Vegas PBS, which will help

the seniors qualify for the current job opportunities at various Caesars Entertainment properties. This

was the capstone event for a yearly dropout prevention effort targeting credit deficient students. The

career histories & past professional experiences of current Caesars Entertainment Employees were

discussed, the students received a Profile evaluation, and tuition waived access to Vegas PBS GOAL

affiliate courses. 8 students who were in participation for this program completed their courses during

the 2014-2015 academic school year.

During the month of June, Vegas PBS taught the Leaders in Training (LIT) at the Boys and Girls Club

Downtown Clubhouse, on how to implement Martha Speaks Reading Buddies curriculum to

approximately 20 first and second grade students. LIT is comprised of middle and high school students

who are trained to become leaders within their clubhouses for the summer.

On June 3, Vegas PBS trained the Andson Foundation and YMCA staff on how to facilitate the Martha

Speaks Reading Buddies, and Design Squad curriculum to approximately 250 students across 4

Southern Nevada YMCA locations. In addition to the staff trainings, Vegas PBS has provided program

materials, ongoing support, and will collect an assessment of data from the student participants.

On June 9 and June 11, Coordinator Chuck Sinicki hosted a booth at the NV Gear-Up event, which was

held at Chaparral High School. Chuck provided resources to nearly 150 students on Homework Hotline,

PBS Learning Media, and the American Graduate Initiative.

During the month of June, 85 Girl Scouts attended six fitness and nutrition workshops that were

conducted by Vegas PBS staff as part of the Keeping Kids fit initiative.

Performing Arts: Concerts & Special Appearances

On January 30, 48 Vegas PBS donors attended the six-time Grammy Award winner and three-time

Academy Award winner Burt Bacharach performance live at the Smith Center. Bacharach, the

American singer, songwriter,

composer, record producer and pianist,

has written more than 73 US and 52

UK Top 40 hits. Bacharach is known

for his collaborations with Dionne

Warwick, Marty Robbins, Tom Jones,

and The Carpenters, among numerous

other artists that he’s worked with

throughout the years.

On January 31, Jackie Evancho

performed live at the Smith Center. 47

donors were in attendance for this

event.

On February 4, the PBS Kids

animated cartoon Dinosaur Train performed a live concert that was held at the Smith Center. This

popular children’s program created by Craig Bartlett explores the prehistoric world of dinosaurs,

jungles, swamps, volcanoes, plant life, and oceans; 48 donors purchased tickets through Vegas PBS for

this event.

On February 14, UNLV Ham Hall

welcomed Midtown Men in Concert.

24 Vegas PBS donors were in

attendance.

On February 22, 40 donors attended

the Mandalay Bay Michael Jackson

concert performance.

On March 7, 74 donors attended the 2

Cellos performance which was held

live at the UNLV Ham Hall.

On March 27, the DCMC welcomed

Rachel Coleman for a Signing Time! Meet & Greet event. This popular program explores the fantastic

world of sign language, and is targeted towards children aged one through eight. On March 28, the

Flamingo Library hosted the Signing Time! Meet & Greet Show. 38 Vegas PBS members attended this

event.

On April 11-12, Vegas PBS hosted a Donor Appreciation Event, whereby 21 Donors received 2 concert

tickets to see Toni Bennett and Lady Gaga perform at the Palms.

On May 1, The Joe Bonamassa performance attracted 178 Vegas PBS donors in attendance.

On May 3, The Moody Blues

performance concert attracted 50 PBS

donors.

On May 6, & May 13, Las

Vegas welcomed rock music group

Journey. The group is best known for

their iconic song “Don’t Stop Believin,”

and has had a career success which has

spanned 5 decades. The concert and

Meet & Greet event attracted 50 donors.

On May 16-17, Vegas PBS

hosted a two day Catalina trip for 38

donors.

On May 16, 31 donors attended the International Contemporary rock music star Bryan Adams live

performance at Mandalay Bay.

On June 12-13, 24 Vegas PBS members

attended Texas native Steve Tyrell’s

concert performance. This American

producer is best known for his

collaborations with Burt Bacharach, Hal

David, and Dionne Warwick.

On June 20, Frank Sinatra Jr. performed

live at the Smith Center giving

audiences a visual multi-media

experience. Through the use of stories,

songs, photos, and videos that reflect his

many memoirs of his iconic father. 37 donors were in attendance for this event.

On June 6-27 The Texas Tenors performed live at the Suncoast Showroom. 193 donors were also in

attendance for this concert event.

Throughout the month of June, 20 donors purchased concert tickets to see the Cirque du Soleil

performance of “O”.

Volunteers

From January to June Volunteer Specialist Amanda Gordon successfully placed community volunteers who

contributed 2, 221 volunteer hours for Vegas PBS’ Membership department, Workforce Training & Economic

Development department, and also for the Educational Media Services department.

Campus Tours & Visitation

From January to June, 374 individuals received a community tour of our Educational Facility; many tour groups

were comprised of boy & girl scouts who were using the tour to earn a merit badge. The Vegas PBS Workforce

Training & Economic Development Lab received 3,746 community visits.

The DCMC shipped 4,632 pieces of media resulting in a 135% increase over Last Year shipments

Veterans Workforce Services

On March 18, Annie Emprima-Martin coordinated a Veterans Hiring Event at Vegas PBS, that 107

Veterans attended; 28 employers participated, offering jobs starting at $15.50 per hour, along with 12

resource vendors serving local Veterans and their families.

On March 18-19, Cary Huddleston & Annie Emprima-Martin staffed a booth at the Stand Down for

Veterans at the Cashman Center. The

Event Served 823 Veterans, Cary

provided counseling services to 41

Veterans and collected 21 GOAL

referral forms for follow-up. Annie

counseled 13 Veterans and collected 8

additional referrals.

On April 8, Jami Miller hosted

the monthly Red Cross Veteran

Employment Networking meeting,

which connected 12 veterans

interested in becoming franchise

entrepreneurs to the services of Vegas

PBS, and our community partner

FranNet.

On April 15, Cary Huddleston hosted the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)

Committee Meeting at our Vegas PBS Educational Technology Campus. During the event Cary

provided Workforce Assessment Training services to 13 veterans.

On May 13, Jami Miller hosted the monthly Red Cross Veteran Employment Networking Meeting.

Wayne Williams, Director of Recruitment and Applications for the Clark County School District

presented, and also provided counseling services to 8 veterans to further assist them with their future

career aspirations.

On May 27, Annie Emprima-Martin hosted the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)

monthly meeting, which was held at the Vegas PBS Educational Campus. Annie provided Workforce

training services to 24 veterans who were in attendance.

On May 28, Vegas PBS, Beyond Yellow Ribbon, and Faunta Finley (Bureau of Reclamation) hosted a

federal resume writing course. 16 Veterans participated in the event and received training on how to

navigate USA jobs.gov to find federal employment, and also learned how to create and file an online

resume.

Community Engagement

On March 23, Vegas PBS Ready To Learn staff installed a “Preschool to Career Connection Area” in

the lobby of the Consulate of El

Salvador. The area was anchored by a

PBS KIDS Lab carpet, and features

PBS KIDS-themed books and toys, in

addition to information on Transmedia

and the Vegas PBS GOAL workforce

development program. Consul

General, Tirso Sermeño, was thrilled,

and also shared that the area would be

a perfect way to share Vegas PBS

resources with families; who on busy

days may wait up to two hours before

receiving services.

On March 24, the EMS department hosted a screening for the American Graduate special “School

Desegregation in Southern Nevada,” where nearly 100 people attended. A panel discussion with Dr.

Sonya Horsford, Eva Simmons and Helen

Toland immediately followed the screening.

On April 20, Vegas PBS Ready To

Learn staff installed a “Preschool to Career

Connection Area,” in the Consulate of

Mexico’s Office of Civil Registration. The

area was anchored by a PBS KIDS Peg + Cat

carpet, which features PBS KIDS books, toys,

information on Transmedia content, and the

Vegas PBS GOAL workforce development

program.

On April 23, Vegas PBS Ready To Learn

staff met with the new Youth and Family

Senior Director for the YMCA of Southern

Nevada, Erica Stegall. The PBS KIDS out

of school curriculum was presented,

including Martha Speaks True Stories. Ms.

Stegall is enthusiastic to utilize PBS

Transmedia curriculum for implementation

at four YMCA locations this summer;

additionally the Vegas PBS staff will train

the YMCA and Andson staff on how to

demonstrate the curriculum.

Desert Meadows AHEC

On February 25, Desert Meadows AHEC collaborated with the Nevada Geriatric Education Consortium

to host the Geriatric course on Exploring Options as the Disease Progresses seminar. The event reached

8 community participants.

On March 10 – April 17, Cary

Huddleston represented Desert

Meadows AHEC at various CCSD

schools, and conducted 9 Teen

Education and Careers in

Healthcare (TEACH) presentations

reaching 753 students.

On March 16, Cary Huddleston

represented Desert Meadows

AHEC at the Health Occupations

Student Association (HOSA) State

Leadership Conference (held at The Rio Hotel). Cary served as a Technical Extemporaneous Writing

competition judge, whereby 650 Students participated in the conference. Cary Huddleston evaluated

student Healthcare Essays and helped determine the final 3 students who would move on to the National

HOSA Competition.

On March 16-April 24, Cary

Huddleston conducted various

community based AHEC meeting

workshops in collaboration with the

College of Southern Nevada,

Standards of Excellence, Lincoln

County Workforce, Northwest Career

College, and the College of Southern

Nevada. Throughout these events,

services were provided to 54

individuals.

On March 19, Cary Huddleston represented Desert Meadows AHEC and GOAL at the Desert Rose High

School College & Career Day in Clark County School District. During the event Cary served

approximately 450 students.

On March 25, Cary Huddleston represented Desert Meadows AHEC as a Training Vendor at the

Healthcare Symposium & Hiring Event, which was held at the One Stop Career Connections Center.

During the event Cary serviced approximately 521 Job Seekers and provided counseling services on

continuing education training through Vegas PBS online GOAL courses.

On April 1, Cary Huddleston collaborated with the Nevada Geriatric Education Consortium to host the

Desert Meadows AHEC- How to Work with

Patients with Dementia and their Families

seminar. The complimentary geriatric seminar

was held at the Vegas PBS Educational

Technology Campus, and included guest speaker

Donna Costa, DHS, OTR/L, FAOTA (Toura

University Nevada). Donna provided

consultations to 12 attendees.

On April 8, The Nevada Geriatric

Education Consortium, partnered with Cary

Huddleston to host a Desert Meadows AHEC –

Foods For Thought; Boasting Brain Power

through Proper Nutrition seminar. Sari

Dennis of PCRM (My Wellness Counts)

served as the guest speaker during this event,

and provided consultations to 12

participants.

On April 22, Cary Huddleston hosted Desert

Meadows AHEC - The Caregiver Journey:

Loss, Grief and Love at the Vegas PBS

Educational Technology Campus, in

collaboration with the Nevada Geriatric

Education Consortium. Mary Shapiro, MSG

(Senior Director, LLC) was the guest speaker and reached 10 participating caregivers.

On May 1, Desert Meadows AHEC presented the Caregiver Conference, at the Vegas PBS Educational

Campus, as part of the Nevada Geriatric Consortia grant. The conference provided professional

development lectures to 21 professionals.

On May 19, Cary Huddleston represented Desert Meadows AHEC at Robert Taylor Elementary School

during their Career Day Event. Cary distributed 80 RTL bookmarkers, 80 I love Vegas PBS stickers, to

80 students regarding the potential career opportunities within the health care industry.

On May 27, Cary Huddleston represented DM AHEC for the American Lung Association Presentation,

which was held at the Asian Community Resource Center; 8 community representatives were in

attendance and each briefed their respective programs.

On June 24, Cary Huddleston represented Desert Meadows AHEC at the Nevada Geriatrics Education

Consortium sponsored Falls Conference, and provided services on continuing education credits for 68

Healthcare professionals; and 8 business leaders at the Asian Community Resource Center.

Community Recognition

On March 10, Debra Solt and Annie Emprima-Martin attended the Employer Support of the Guard and

Reserve (ESGR) employer recognition event, which was held at Creech Air Force Base. Debra received

the Above and Beyond Award in recognition for the work that Vegas PBS is doing with Veterans.

Annie received The Seven Seals Award for going above and beyond in serving Veterans throughout her

position at Vegas PBS.

On May 14, at the CCSD Board Meeting, EMS Coordinator Chuck Sinicki received honor and

recognition as being a member of the Each One Read One working group. Each One Read One is a

district-wide collaborative reading program in Clark County, which brings a new book to elementary

schools each year and encourages all children to read and discuss them with their classmates.

On May 20, Annie represented Vegas PBS at the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)

Breakfast with Governor Brian Sandoval in Carson City. Vegas PBS was recognized as one of

Nevada’s nominees for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. This award is

given to employers for their

outstanding support of employees

serving in the Guard and the Reserve.

On May 21, Vegas PBS and the

Nevada Office of the U.S. Small

Business Administration presented the

2015 Small Business Awards (SBA)

Luncheon at the Gold Coast Hotel &

Casino. Eleven businesses were

recognized, fourteen lenders, and four

other individuals for their previous

contributions made to assist small

businesses, and in stimulating

Nevada’s economy. Nearly 260 individuals were in attendance for this celebratory event.

Family Engagement

On February 21, Ready To Learn staff hosted a Mobile Lab at the Cashman Center for the Take Back

the City Event. The inaugural event was organized by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department,

in order to combat the rise of crime in the community and to empower residents. The family-friendly

event featured over 200 organizations promoting topics ranging from safety to education. The RTL

booth provided an engaging and hands-on experience by demonstrating PBS KIDS Transmedia content

to over 100 families. It also served as an example that demonstrated the efforts that are presently in

place to support preschool to career educational initiatives; by promoting the Vegas PBS Global Online

Advanced Learning (GOAL) workforce development resources to residents.

On March 5, Ready To Learn Project Facilitator Mayte Heredia, presented at the National Association

for Bilingual Education (NABE) parent institute at Bally’s Hotel and Casino. During two, 30-minute

roundtable sessions, 30 parents were provided with a demonstration on PBS KIDS Transmedia

resources, including the PBS KIDS Lab and

Mobile Learning Program apps.

On March 18, Ready To Learn

Coordinator Jessica Carroll presented and

demonstrated PBS KIDS Transmedia for

CCSD Trustee Patrice Tew’s PAC meeting

at Darnell Elementary School. 20 parents in

attendance participated in a hands-on

demonstration using the theme of non-

standard measurement. Using content on

the PBS KIDS Lab, parents were shown

how to navigate through the website to find

activities, games, videos, and books to

complement the theme. Parents were also provided with an overview of all the Vegas PBS services,

including the GOAL workforce development program.

Vegas PBS Ready To Learn staff hosted a PBS KIDS Transmedia Mobile Lab at Snyder, Harris, West

Prep and Lake Elementary Schools during the month of March. The Mobile Labs took place after school

during several events that were tailored to providing designated parent resources, reading, and or

math. Overall, approximately 150 families sampled free math-related Mobile Learning Program apps,

including Cyberchase, ShapeQuest, Cyberchase 3D Builder, and PBS Parents Play and Learn apps, in

addition to interacting with the PBS KIDS Lab.

On March 27, the Vegas PBS Described and Captioned Media Center hosted an Open House with

Rachel Coleman, co-creator and host of the

popular children’s broadcast series, Signing

Time! This series teaches American Sign

Language to children of all ages. Over 75

parents, children and specialists throughout

our community were in attendance.

On April 15, Jami Miller hosted a Vegas PBS

booth at the Family Learning Resource

Academy (FLRA) Community Resource

Fair. In which 14 community partners

highlighted training and resources for 53

multilingual families, leading to English

proficiency and career certifications.

On April 18, Vegas PBS hosted a hands-on PBS Kids Mobile Lab, which showcased the PBS Parents

Play and Learn app at the Nevada National Guard’s Annual Military Spring Fling. The Mobile Lab

attracted over 100 children accompanied by 75 parents. Families also made Elmo puppets and learned

about Sesame Street’s Military Families Near and Far app. The annual event was open to all branches of

the military and featured food, activities, and entertainment, provided by local and national community

organizations.

On April 25, Vegas PBS hosted a Mobile Lab and provided services to approximately 150 parents at the

annual Parent Resource Expo, a component of the Nevada PTA Convention. The booth provided hands-

on experience with PBS KIDS Transmedia

content, and also served as an excellent

example of how Vegas PBS supports

preschool to career educational initiatives.

Families in attendance also had the

opportunity to learn about Vegas PBS

Global Online Advanced Learning (GOAL)

workforce development resources, as well

as the Vegas PBS Described and Captioned

Media Program (DCMC).

On April 25, Vegas PBS Ready To

Learn participated in "Semana de

Educacion Financiera," at the Consulate of

Mexico to complement the event’s theme of family financial education. Vegas PBS demonstrated

Sesame Street’s bilingual For me, For You, For Later website and the mobile app, which is designed to

teach families the first steps to spending, sharing, and saving (sesamestreet.org/save). 25 participating

parents reviewed the website and mobile app.

On April 25, Vegas PBS Ready To

Learn hosted an “Explore the

Outdoors” seed-planting booth for the

annual Dia De Los Ninos event. This

event was designed to advocate the

importance and awareness of literacy

amongst children of all linguistic and

cultural backgrounds. During this event

the RTL staff reached 100 children and

provided services to 75 parents.

On May 2, Vegas PBS hosted a hands-

on PBS Kids Mobile Lab at the Las

Vegas Science and Technology

Festival, which showcased a wide variety of PBS KIDS educational mobile apps. The Science and

Technology Festival attracted over 7, 250 attendees. Vegas PBS distributed nearly 350 free Apple and

Android redemption codes to the families that visited the labs.

On May 2, Vegas PBS hosted a PBS Kids Mobile Lab at the Pre-K Family Fun Fair. The Curious

George make-and-take activity was

demonstrated, along with the PBS Parents Play

and Learn app, and Sesame Street’s Breathe,

Think, Do app. Curious George story books

were distributed to 218 families that were in

attendance.

On May 13, RTL staff hosted a PBS

KIDS Transmedia mobile lab at Hickey

Elementary School, for the Bring Your Own

Device (BYOD) Technology Night.

Approximately 40 families co-played Mobile

Learning Program apps; including Cyberchase,

ShapeQuest, Cyberchase 3D Builder, The

Electric Company Party Game, Martha Speaks Story Maker, and PBS Parents Play and Learn apps.

On May 14, Vegas PBS Ready To Learn staff hosted a PBS KIDS transmedia mobile lab, and

distributed summer learning resources at the United Way of Southern Nevada’s annual “Flip Through

Summer 2015” event, which was held at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. This event encourages

summer reading and provides families with resources to prevent summer learning loss. Approximately

300 families visited the Vegas PBS booth during the event.

Throughout the month of June, Vegas PBS conducted thirteen workshops to promote the annual “Club

Read!” summer program at various Las Vegas Clark County Library Locations. The workshops utilized

Martha Speaks Reading Buddies and Peg + Cat curriculum to provide summer learning ideas to reach

276 children and 177 parents.

Year-to-date, Vegas PBS’ Whole Day GRP’s (Live +7 Days) increased by 10.92% over Last Year.

Employment, Professional & Educational Development

On February 11, Ready To Learn staff facilitated a Transmedia mini-workshop for 40 elementary

classrooms and PE teachers, in which nutritional guidelines from myplate.gov, portion sizes, and added

table sugar limits were demonstrated. Teachers also received training on the Watch, Play, Explore,

Share Transmedia framework to create their own lessons addressing health, wellness, and nutrition.

On February 11 and February 25, Chuck Sinicki provided professional development (PDE 2627) to 18

educators on the various services that Vegas PBS has to offer. A specific emphasis was placed on

incorporating videos from various Vegas PBS Video Streaming services into educational presentations.

On February 13, Staff Development Day at Dell Webb MS, Coordinator Craig Cuddihy provided

training on Vegas PBS OnePlace. Vegas PBS OnePlace is a federated search engine that provides

teacher’s access to over 1 million Common Core Standards media resources. Over 60 teachers received

the training; some individual teachers had Vegas PBS resources posted on their "my.ccsd" webpages

immediately after the session.

On March 4, Ready To Learn Coordinator Jessica Carroll facilitated a training for eight nurses

encompassing early childhood literacy strategies and PBS KIDS Transmedia. The goal of the Healthy

Start Initiative is to strengthen families and improve childhood development through a home visit

approach, where nurses visit families before and after pregnancy. The training acquainted nurses with

early literacy strategies to use within the home environment, and also introduced them to creative

methods to encourage daily readings to infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The session ended with a

demonstration of PBS KIDS Transmedia resources designed to strengthen early literacy and math

skills, including the PBS KIDS Common Core Standards.

From Jan-June, Vegas PBS Ready To Learn staff facilitated two, 50-minute PBS KIDS Transmedia

trainings at the New Teacher Symposium. Fifteen teachers were guided through the process of using

the PBS KIDS Lab & Learn websites to create their own Watch, Play, Explore, Share lessons. Mobile

Learning Program apps were also available for teachers to try. Teachers who wanted to implement

their own Watch, Play, Explore, Share lessons were encouraged to submit their lesson plans to Vegas

PBS, in order to receive a set of books that would complement the themes of their lessons.

On March 12 and March 26, Craig Cuddihy provided professional development (PDE 2627) to 16

educators on Vegas PBS OnePlace; with a specific emphasis on incorporating videos from various

Vegas PBS Video Streaming services into educational presentations.

On March 18, a new TeacherLine Spring Semester began with 45 teachers seeking graduate credits in

content areas that would directly impact their classrooms. Vegas PBS was able to offer Tuition

Scholarships which helped to increase course enrollments. Courses are completed online and offer up-

to-date techniques and best practices. The classes continue to exhibit popularity amongst Clark County

School District teachers.

On March 21, Vegas PBS held its second

Transmedia professional development

class for seven CCSD Title I and Zoom

Pre K teachers. Teachers who

participated in this professional

development were given the opportunity

to apply for a mini-grant through PBS to

receive up to two iPads for their

classrooms. To apply for the grant,

teachers had to submit a detailed

reflection of their own “Read, View, Do,

Explore” lessons. Additionally, teachers

also had to provide a detailed plan on

how they would incorporate Transmedia into a family engagement session to encourage co-play and

exploration of their resources.

On April 9, Craig Cuddihy

provided training to over 20

teachers on Vegas PBS

OnePlace at Coronado High

School. Vegas PBS

OnePlace is a federated

search engine that provides

teachers access to over 1

million Common Core

Standards media resources.

This training event was also

part of the CCSD Onboarding training that is offered to new educators.

On April 14 and April 28, EMS Coordinator Mark Nelson offered a Professional Development

Education (PDE) course on advanced video streaming techniques and uses; whereby 17 CCSD

educators earned one credit towards renewing their teaching licenses.

On April 15, a new TeacherLine spring semester began with 41 teachers seeking graduate credits in

content areas that directly impacted their classrooms. Vegas PBS was able to offer Tuition Scholarships

to these educators.

On April 20, Ready To Learn staff facilitated a Transmedia mini-workshop for 39 elementary

classroom and PE teachers; in which nutrition guidelines from myplate.gov, portion sizes and added

On May 1, Craig Cuddihy provided training to over 30 Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant

Coaches. Craig conducted a video streaming session, distributed handouts, and also demonstrated the

OnePlace Server Database List. Content from PBS LearningMedia "Between the Lions,” was one

example that demonstrated how video can work in collaboration with captions, to allow students to

enhance their reading capabilities.

On May 4, Jami Miller hosted a Vegas PBS booth at Congressman Joe Heck’s Career Fair, to present

workforce training programs, and service options to over 400 dislocated workers. 56 vendors attended

the event which offered over 5,500 job opportunities.

On May 20, Chuck Sinicki demonstrated Google Apps for Education to 36 teachers from various

schools within CCSD that are currently enrolled in the pilot program for this app. Google Apps for

Education was designed to improve time management, increase classroom communication,

productivity, and organization for educators. 100 schools are currently enrolled in this pilot program

which will officially launch during the upcoming 2015-16 school year.

On May 27, the Vegas PBS Described and Captioned Media Center hosted a staff meeting for Easter

Seals of Southern Nevada. An overview of DCMC services and materials were provided to five

specialists who work with blind and

visually impaired children throughout

the community.

On June 4, Vegas PBS staff

collaborated with the Adult Education

department to coordinate the American

Graduate Celebration, which was held

at the Thomas & Mack center. Over 40

staff members and 14 volunteers

celebrated 1,425 adults who earned their

High School Diploma, or their High

School Equivalency Certification using

GOAL Courses. Vegas PBS also

distributed AG Champion materials to

approximately 700 event attendees.

During the month of June, Coordinator Craig Cuddihy partnered with the Instruction Design &

Professional Learning (IDPL) department, to conduct 3 training sessions to reach 60 educators on

Vegas PBS OnePlace at Chaparral High

School. Vegas PBS OnePlace is a free

resource for educators to access online

resources that are aligned with the Nevada

Academic Content Standards.

During the month of June,

coordinators Mark Nelson and Charles Sinicki

provided two PDE 2627 courses that reached

62 educators. PDE 2627 provides an overview

of the multitude of services Vegas PBS has to

offer, and also instructs teachers on how to

incorporate videos from Vegas PBS into their

presentations as part of their lesson plans.

Teachers who attend this PDE course earned 1 credit toward their license renewal.

On June 11, Vegas PBS held the third Transmedia professional development course for seventeen

CCSD early childhood teachers. Teachers who participated in this course have the opportunity to apply

On June 16, Lieutenant Governor Mark Hutchinson invited Debra Solt and Cary Huddleston to attend

the official launch of the Western Governors University of Nevada. During the launch event, Debra and

Cary networked with more than 20 professional leaders on economic development, and also on

educational and training programs that are offered through Workforce.

Throughout the month of June, the Workforce Department participated in several community outreach

activities. On June 11, Cary Huddleston represented the Workforce Department at the monthly Nevada

Hispanic Business Group “Buenos Dias Las Vegas,” networking meeting, and met with 12 business

leaders on economic development within the Hispanic Community. On June 24, Jami Miller

highlighted workforce training and resources for 35 community partners at the quarterly Program

Coordinating Committee meeting, hosted by the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority.
