Thank You from Back Bay MissionThank you to all of our church members and friends for sup-porting the Manna with Meaning project in October. Gloves, Hats, Scarves, White Tube SocksOn January 27, we will serve dinner to our friends in Lakeview.  We all understand what it means to try to stay warm in cold temperatures, but we have difficulty understanding how it feels to be homeless in cold temperatures.  If you see a sale on hats, gloves, scarfs or white tube socks,  consider a donation which will bring HUGE smiles on our neighbors’ faces. Thank you very much.  Ann Richards

Work Tour – 2014 Every Fall, a group of adults from our church travels to Biloxi, MS, where we assist in housing rehabilitation projects sponsored by Back Bay Mission. “BBM, a community ministry of the United Church of Christ, serves the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the wider church community by faithful witness for social justice and compassionate service to the poor and marginal-ized.”

From November 9 – 14, seventeen adults from our church and three adults from Memorial U.C.C. in Fitchburg, WI, worked on removing shingles and re-shingling a house in Gulfport. We painted the interior of the 6 unit apartment building, “Home Port,” and also began installing doors, door trim, and baseboards. Home Port is an apartment building in Biloxi for homeless veterans. Several of us also served breakfast and lunch at the local “soup kitchen,” and/or assisted in Back Bay Mission’s food pantry, and/or helped at the Micah Center. The Micah Center is Back Bay Mission’s day time facility for homeless individuals. It pro-vides showering and laundering facilities, computer access, and counselors to assist in obtaining ID’s, birth certificates, and other resources.

Our group enjoyed good work, good food, and good fel-lowship. Once again, it was a rewarding experience to participate in Back Bay Mission’s programs for “serving the least of these.” Please look at our church website, cuccst.org to see pictures of our group at work. We look forward to returning in October, 2015!

Christmas Giving Tree 2014The Mission committee has chosen The Night Ministry, The Salvation Army and Lazarus House to be the recipients of the gifts on the 2014 Christmas Giving Tree.

There are 64 tags on the tree from the Salvation Army. representing 32 children. Each tag has suggestions for either a clothing item or a toy or other wanted gift. Almost every tag for clothing will say coat, shirt pants. You may wish to purchase other clothing items such sweaters, jeans, hoodies or pajamas. These items will be welcome as well. It is not necessary to purchase every-thing that is on the tag.

There are 64 gift tags on the tree, 44 for Night Ministry and 20 for the Salvation Army. This is a great opportu-nity to support Manna and make your shopping easy! Simply purchase your Manna card, give the Manna team the tag from the Giving Tree and they will take care of the rest. How easy is that!

The tags for Lazarus House are very specific and are things requested by their residents. Please try to honor them as closely as possible.

It is important that all gifts be returned with the tag at-tached by December 14 so that they can be delivered to the appropriate agency on December 15.

The Mission Committee thanks you for your generous support of this year’s Christmas Giving Tree as we as a congregation again show how we Increase our Love for God and Neighbor.

Ways to Ward off ElvisThe holiday season can bring some pretty unwelcome guests---no, not your extended family---I mean stress and depression! And it’s no wonder. The holidays pres-ent a dizzying array of demands—parties, shopping, baking, cleaning and entertaining, just to name a few.But with some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays. When stress is at its peak, it’s hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past.Acknowledge your feelings. If someone close to you has died within the year or you can’t be with loved ones, realize that it’s normal to feel sadness and grief. It’s OK to take time to cry or express your feelings. You can’t force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season. Consider planning a ritual in honor of the one who is gone: a prayer at dinner, a special candle-lighting or some other meaningful celebration of life.Reach out. If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out oppor-tunities to be with others who can provide support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others is another good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships.Be realistic. The holidays don’t have to be perfect and if you have lost someone close, this is a whole new experi-ence. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones.Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and grocery shop-ping, decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don’t try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts. After all, we are celebrating the birth of a pretty non-materialistic man!Don’t abandon healthy habits. Don’t let the holidays become a free-for-all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Try having a healthy snack before holiday parties so you are not “starving” when you get there which often leads to overeating. Get plenty of sleep, and don’t forget about getting regular physical ac-tivity each day. (You didn’t think I’d skip the chance to encourage healthy eating and a little exercise, did you??)Take a breather. Make some time for yourself. Spending just 15 minutes alone, without distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do. Find something that reduces stress by clearing your mind,

slowing your breathing and restoring inner calm. Sunlight exposure, even just time spent outside and a good brisk walk may be enough.Put Christ at the heart of your celebration. I am not a col-lector but I do have quite a few Nativity scenes. I carefully and lovingly arrange them, putting the Christ child in the center of each scene. May your heart prepare Him room so that the wonder of Emmanuel, God with us, may consume you.Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable or hopeless. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional. Seasonal Af-fective Disorder (SAD) and depression are real and can be effectively treated.No Blue Christmas here…Elvis has left the building!

Noël: Christmas Eve 1913 Robert Bridges, Poet Laureate, United Kingdom (1913)

“A frosty Christmas Eve when the stars were shining Fared I forth alone where westward falls the hill, And from many a village in the water’d valley Distant music reach’d me peals of bells aringing: The constellated sounds ran sprinkling on earth’s floor As the dark vault above with stars was spangled o’er. Then sped my thoughts to keep that first Christmas of all When the shepherds watching by their folds ere the dawn Heard music in the fields and marveling could not tell Whether it were angels or the bright stars singing. Now blessed be the towers that crown England so fair That stand up strong in prayer unto God for our souls Blessed be their founders (said I) an’ our country folk Who are ringing for Christ in the belfries tonight With arms lifted to clutch the rattling ropes that race Into the dark above and the mad romping din. But to me heard afar it was starry music Angels’ song, comforting as the comfort of Christ When he spake tenderly to his sorrowful flock: The old words came to me by the riches of time Mellow’d and transfigured as I stood on the hill Heark’ning in the aspect of th’ eternal silence.”This is a lovely Christmas poem by Robert Bridges from the early 20th century. You might recognize it, as it was set to music and performed by John Denver. Gerald Finzi set the piece to music in a work entitled “In Terra Pax”, for chorus and orchestra. Take pleasure in the mystical quality of a per-son walking alone on Christmas eve yet being in touch with humanity and the wonder of the night through the bells. Happy Holiday!

January 23 – “Benediction” by Kent Hauf. Location – Susan & John Rodgers.From the beloved and best-selling author of Plainsong and Eventide comes a story of life and death, and the ties that bind, once again set out on the High Plains in Holt, Colorado.

When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife, Mary, must work together to make his final days as comfortable as possible. Their daughter, Lorraine, hastens back from Denver to help look after him; her devotion softens the bitter absence of their estranged son, Frank, but this cannot be willed away and remains a pal-pable presence for all three of them. Meanwhile, the town’s newly arrived preacher attempts to mend his strained rela-tionships with his wife and teenaged son, a task that proves all the more challenging when he faces the disdain of his congregation after offering more than they are accustomed to getting on a Sunday morning. And throughout, an el-derly widow and her middle-aged daughter do everything they can to ease the pain of their friends and neighbors. Despite the travails that each of these families faces, together they form bonds strong enough to carry them through the most difficult of times.  Bracing, sad and deeply illuminating, Benediction captures the fullness of life by representing every stage of it as well as the hopes and dreams that sustain us along the way. Here Kent Haruf gives us his most indelible portrait yet of this small town and reveals, with grace and insight, the compassion, the suffering and, above all, the humanity of its inhabitants.

Parlor Art Gallery December 2014 - January 2015Parlor Art Artist - Sandie BilsSandie Bils, Parlor Art Gallery artist and member of our church, presents Christmas Quilts.  Colors, shapes, symbols each combined in the art of quilting create holiday themes.  Sandie loves snowmen and cardinals and incorporates each in Christmas Quilts. As a child, Sandi Bils remembers her mother, grandmother, and sisters making and tying quilts.  She remembers her grandmother made silk pieced quilt tops embellished with decorative embroidery work. Sandie began quilting 25 years ago and has, at this point, made 25-30 quilts..... and counting. Sandie Bils hopes you enjoy viewing the Christmas Quilts and we of the Parlor Art Gallery sincerely appreciate the opportunity to show her beautiful art.Kathy Westman, Parlor Art Gallery

A Thanksgiving Poem

I knelt to pray when day was done,And prayed; O Lord, bless everyone;

Lift from each saddened heart, the pain,And let the sick be well again.And then I woke another day

And carelessly went on my way.I did not try to share the loadOf anyone along the road;

I did not even go to seeThe sick man just next door to me.

Yet once again when day was done,I prayed, “O Lord, bless everyone.”

But as I prayed, into my earThere came a voice that whispered clear;

Pause, hypocrite, before you pray;Whom have you tried to bless today?

God’s richest blessins always goBy hands that serve God here below.

And then I hid my face and cried;Forgive me, God, for I have lied;

Let me but live another dayAnd I will live the way I pray!

Amen

[email protected] SCHOOL OUTREACH: November 23rd and 30th had all of our Sunday school kids hard at work. Our kids made 97 cards and 35 drawings. In addition 42 letters were hand written by our 4th through 7th graders. All of this will be “delivered” to our friends at the Holmstad and GreenFields senior facilities by those caroling on December 14th. Thanks to all the teach-ers and kids who worked to make someone’s day a little happier.

PSALM READERS – Sign ups for Psalm reading dur-ing the worship service are now posted on the bulletin board in the Sunday school hallway. This is open to all children through 7th grade who can read. New at this? We can do a “practice” time at the pulpit to get a feel for what it feels like.

ACOLYTES - Sign ups for acolytes are also posted on the bulletin board in the Sunday school hallway. This entails arriving at 9:20 to meet with the head ushers located just outside the center aisle of the sanctuary. The ushers will let you know when to walk down the aisle to light the candles on the altar. This is also open to all children through 7th grade.

On December 28th there will be no nursery or Sunday school. Enjoy this time with your family. The Older I Get….the simpler my holiday preparations become...the closer I feel to friends as I write Christmas cards...the more fondly I remember Christmases past...the longer I hold on to a holiday hug...the more I realize Christmas is a matter of the heart...the tighter my throat gets when I sing “Silent Night”...the more I enjoy giving than receiving...the more I try to see Christmas through the eye of a child...the longer I sit at night in the glow of the Christmas tree...the more wondrously beautiful the Christmas story is...the deeper my awe at God’s infinite love...the more I love Christmas! WISHING YOU ALL THE BLESSINGS, JOY AND LOVE THAT THE BIRTH OF JESUS BRINGS! AND A WONDROUS 2015!!!

Who’s in the Pews?Bob GrahamBy Sue Peterson

Bob Graham was born in Chicago but moved at the age of 2 to Itasca. If you didn’t know, Ken is his twin broth-er. They have an older sister, Alice. Bob remembers Alice taking him and Ken to their first Cub game when they were 7 years old. It was a memorable experience as a fly ball landed on a blanket in his lap. He is still a die hard Cub fan today.

Bob was baptized in a Lutheran Church but attended a Presbyterian Church growing up. He has fond memo-ries of his youth group in particular the trips to George Williams Camp in Lake Geneva. He is still in touch with his now 90 plus year old youth director. He also has special memories of Sunday school especially his middle school teachers who were very influential to his faith. He remembers the perfect attendance pins he received. He and Ken sang “The BIBLE” as a duet once in church. He loves music and singing still today.

Bob met Anne at Northern Illinois University their sophomore year at a fraternity-sorority dance. They dated for 5 years including the time when Anne was teaching in Palatine and Bob got his master’s degree and began teaching in St. Charles. They married in 1967 and lived in St. Charles in two different apart-ments in older houses before moving to their current home. Anne taught three years at Lincoln School. Bob first began his teaching career in 1966 as a 5th grade teacher at Munhall School where he taught for 3 years with Lee Glesne as principal. In June of 1969 he was offered the job as principal of Wasco School. It was a hard decision as he loved teaching but he accepted and for the next 20 years he saw Wasco go from the small-est school in the district with 190 children to the largest with 634 children in 1989. At that point he feels blessed to have the opportunity to become the assistant super-intendent for personnel until the spring of 2000 when he retired. That year Bob as well as his brother Ken and Charlie Bell were honored to have Bell Graham Elementary School named after them. What a special

dedication and recognition for all three of them.

Bob and Anne have two children. Jeff was born is 1970 and works at Strata TAC in St. Charles where he works with the international sales department. He also works with Suzy Daly as youth director. I am pretty sure the youth will still be in contact with him when he is 90 plus years old too. Mindy was born in 1974 and works at Macy’s at Fox Valley Shopping Center.

Since retirement Bob has kept busy working 2 days a week for Jade and Merrimak delivering teeth through-out the Chicago area. He loves it and feels the best part is he gets to be around people.

Throughout the years Bob has been active in a variety of ways in our church. He taught 5th grade Sunday school with Charlie Peterson especially enjoying the “planning” sessions once a week. You can ask him about those planning times. He and Anne also taught middle school Sunday school with Rett and Jeanne Humke with a fond memory of having the kids plan the Advent service with live animals and a moving star that appeared. Bob was also the moderator at the downtown church which is like the current council president. With help from Anne to make the costume, Bob became Psalty in our Mother’s Day musical for two years of Kids Praise and Kids Praise 2. In our new building, he has been on the Congregational Life Committee and initiated the first men’s retreat with John Rodgers a few years ago. He also does several airport runs for the people going to Back Bay and the international travel groups, and he does doctor ap-pointment runs for some older members. Thanks Bob for being such a giving servant.

As you may know, Bob is currently the chair of the search committee. You have read the updates as they move forward with the search. Be watching for more information with this important procedure to call a new minister. Thanks to Bob and the search commit-tee for offering your time and expertise. As Bob says, he feels blessed to be working with the committee. They are working well together with each person tak-ing on different responsibilities. Most importantly, Bob says “We’ll be successful!”
