A Stephen Ministry Congregation August 13, 2017 Volume 42 Issue 2
Philippians 4:6-7: Do not worry about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Last Friday, we hosted a luncheon for the retirees of Highland. Fifty people gathered for fellowship and creativity at the summer Senior Ministry gathering. There they enjoyed hearing from several artists who participated in Dr. Osborne’s sabbatical study, “Imagination, Creativity, and God’s Action in Creative Endeavor”.
Our Highland participants were Barry Wood, Mary Kay Hymes, and Lois Hagedorn who described the creative process they used for their work!
Senior Ministry Luncheon!
Come One, Come All!
On Sunday, Aug. 27 Highland will be hosting its annual Fall Kick Off celebration! We will have a COMBINED 10 a.m. service in the Sanc-tuary with special music and worship as well as a “blessing of the backpacks” for the children returning to school! The event will conclude our Summer Sundays events for our Bringing Jesus to Life Together theme and also kick off our Fall ministries and activities that will begin in September!
Following the service, we will celebrate with worship, music, and games open to the Highland congregation and the entire community! We will have live music with the Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra and activities for children and youth led by Camp Krislund. We will have 200 BBQ chicken meals (with a side of potato salad) provided from Reunion Food truck. The meals will be on a first come, first serve basis! Proceeds of Reunion Food truck go towards Community Action programs and the Lancaster Crispus Attucks Community Center in their efforts to end poverty in Lancaster County. Scoops Ice Cream truck will also be available to purchase at an additional cost.
This is an event that is open to everyone in our community so bring your children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends our for fun and fellowship!

Grandpals! Are you interested in being a Grandpal to a 4th/5th grader next year? You would be responsible in writing letters to your student once a month and then meeting with them at the end of the year. Last year we did this ministry for the first time and it was a beautiful thing to witness. If you are interested in being a "senior" grandpal (or continuing as one), please contact Laurie Juarez 336-686-8342 or [email protected]
Are you interested in teaching our children next year? Are you passionate about sharing God's love with children? Do you have a special gift like storytelling, listening , or art that you would like to use with the kids@Highland? We are looking for teachers who are willing to commit to 2-3 weeks of the month to pray and build a relationship with our children as well as listen to and share God's love with them. Please contact Laurie if you are interest-ed [email protected] or 336-686-8342
Event Tents needed: If you have an event tent or canopy tent, would you be willing to let us borrow for our Kick-off Sunday on August 27th? We are going to have outdoor activities with food, music and games and we want to make sure we have plenty of shade for everyone. Please contact Pastor Noe Juarez at 717-344-1281 or e-mail: [email protected] Instructors Needed ~ We are looking for a Christian Yoga or Pilates teacher to run a class on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-10:30 a.m. We are paying $20 per class. If you are interested or know anyone that would be interested please contact Mindy Witmer at [email protected] or Laurie Juarez at [email protected]
It's Okay to be Human ~ An important theme always is the humanity of Christ. In Jesus, God became human and fully experienced the wide range of emotions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sadness, hurt, anger, dis-appointment, grief and abandonment. That is part of being human. Another part
of being human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God's plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it. So when you are experiencing difficult times, don't struggle alone. Our Stephen Minis-tries will walk with you, listen to you, encourage you, pray with you, and provide confiden-tial one-to-one care to help you through tough times. Stephen Ministers can bring the love of Jesus back into your life. To learn more about Stephen Ministry, talk to one of our Ste-phen leaders: Steve Miller, 717-575-8061, Leslie Aikens, 717-572-0256 or speak with one of our Pastors.
Summertime - and the living is easy. Not so for everyone. The food hub at LCCC needs your donations of rice, jelly, cereal, canned goods and dinner helpers. A complete list can be found at the food cupboard in the Narthex. Monetary donations are always welcome; checks should be made out to Highland with “local food” in the memo line. Thank you for helping to feed the hungry.

Chancel Flowers
The flower bouquet graces the sanctuary every Sunday and after the service the Deacons break this huge bouquet down into four smaller bouquets. These bouquets are then delivered to people in the hospital, folks who are grieving, sick or homebound. They bring joy and comfort to those who receive them in knowing that their Highland family is thinking about them. Please consider sponsoring a flower arrangement in memory of a loved one, in honor of some-one or to celebrate a joyous occasion such as birthday, anniversary, or birth. Flower chart can be found in the Narthex. Thank you!
Short Term Mission Opportunities
We still have some church to-go boxes in the narthex for kids going on a trip this summer! Please take one for your child! If you have grandchildren staying with you sometime over the summer and would like a box as well - take one! Enjoy :)

Stewardship “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.” (Leviticus 27:30)
Strategically linked to the concept of tithe was the concept of firstfruits.
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your
crops.” (Proverbs 3:9) Firstfruit tithing is one of the richest spiritual practices in all of Scripture. It provides a powerful series of remind-ers built into the very rhythm of our lives. Every time I tithe, I remind myself that God is on the throne. No me. Not money. Every time I tithe, I reinforce that all I have is from him.. The tithe is not a tip for good service, as though God were some helper I could patronize. He is the Owner, I am the steward. Every time I tithe, I make a declara-tion: “I will trust you, God” – even when trusting doesn’t feel easy or natural. Every time I tithe, I am reminded, even as I calculate the amount of my check, of how much I’ve been given. I count my blessings, and in doing so, I put to death (or at least injure) the “more” monster in me. Question: What comes to your mind as you read the word tithing?
