Advantages of Molded Fitting Covers WATER ENTRY INTO INSULATION SYSTEMS: It has been well documented that most water entering an insulation system comes in at the fittings where jacket seams are not well sealed and overlaps are minimal. Our fittings are designed to fit perfectly with pressed aluminum jackets so that the full designed overlap can be used. We have enclosed a letter from the major aluminum Ell-Jac manufacturers that recommends using their products with a molded fitting cover. In addition, if water does get through the weather barrier, our fitting covers will not get wet because our fittings are made from a non-wicking material. HEAT LOSS: We have run tests to check the heat loss of mitered vs. molded fittings. Our test was run on a hot plate where we measured the hot and cold surface of block insulation (both calcium silicate and perlite silicate). The block insulation was then cut into strips, glued back together, and then we remeasured the hot and cold surfaces. Our tests resulted in 15-20% more heat loss when mitered joints was used (copy of the test enclosed). Our competitor also ran a like test using regular pipe covering and mitered pipe covering with similar results. COST: Sproule Pre-Molded High Temperature Perlite Fitting Covers can compete with a mitered elbow that meets ASTM C-450. However, Sproule Pre-Molded High Temperature Perlite Fitting Covers might not compete with insulating cement, glass blanket wrapped fittings, fittings that have less than the recommended number of miters, or any other short cut method for insulating fittings. SCHEDULE: Sproule Pre-Molded High Temperature Perlite Fitting Covers are stocked items and can be supplied with small lead times. INSTALLATION: Prefabricated parts are the wave of the future. Sproule Pre-Molded High Temperature Perlite Fitting Covers can be installed more quickly and efficiently than mitered elbows, saving labor and installation time.

Water Entry into Insulation Systems

Most insulation systems begin to fail at the elbows. This failure allows water to wick into the remainder of the system.

Calcium Silicate will absorb up to 400% of its own weight in water if exposed to the elements.

Increased weight in the insulation systems can lead to other problems such as failures at the pipe hangers and supports.

The elbow is one area where a non-wicking insulation such as Perlite is invaluable.

Thermal Conductivity Test Test Date: July 11, 1994 Goal: To determine if Sproule Pre-Molded High Temperature Perlite Fitting Covers are more thermally efficient than either mitered perlite fittings or mitered calcium silicate fittings. Procedure: Take typical (i.e. Calcium Silicate) block and cut to 12X 12 X 1 ½. Pre-dry molded sample at 175o F for 24 hours to remove any moisture. Place molded block onto hot plate, clamp down, and run at 400o F for 24 hours to stabilize. Measure cold surface temperature of molded fitting (block). Remove block, cut into twelve equal segments and glue back together. Dry mitered fitting at 175o F for 2 hours to dry adhesive. Place molded block onto hot plate, clamp down, and run at 400o F for 24 hours to stabilize. Measure cold surface temperature of mitered fitting (block). RESULTS

Hot Side Cold Side Calcium Silicate Molded Block 400° F 151° F Calcium Silicate Mitered Block 400° F 159° F Sproule Perlite Molded Block 400° F 153° F Sproule Perlite Mitered Block 400° F 160° F

Conclusion: The testing showed that thermal efficiency improved markedly when molded block was used instead of mitered block.

Installation

Step 1 Step 2

Step 3 Step 4

Sproule High Temperature Pre-Molded Perlite Fitting Covers can be installed in five easy steps. No need to dig out the inside to make sure the fitting cover seats itself onto the pipe fitting properly. No rasping down of the outside edges of each miter is necessary to make the aluminum Ell-Jac fit properly.
