HIGH-SPEED TRANSPORT AND INTERCITY TRANSPORT – GLOBAL MARKET TRENDS

Market Volumes for OEM Business and After Sales Service as well as Prospects for Market Developments of Infrastructure, Rolling Stock, Products and Manufacturers

This study entitled “High-speed and Intercity Transport – Global Market Trends” pro-vides a comprehensive overview into the structure, installed bases, procurements, manufacturers, and development trends in the rail vehicle segment analysed.

Based on current developments in rail transport, this study delivers an analysis and sound estimate of the market for High-speed and Intercity trains. Based on the successful preceding study from 2013 and experience from more than 2 000 projects in the field of railway tech-nology, in the past few years SCI Verkehr has verified the central input data and optimised its forecasting methodology. We have reviewed and updated all chapters of the preceding study. In addition, SCI Verkehr has performed an improved product segmentation for valua-tion of installed bases and age structures.

In concrete terms, this market study “High-Speed and Intercity Transport – Global Mar-ket Trends” includes:

– A regionally differentiated and country-specific look at the worldwide market for high-speed and intercity transport

– A comprehensive analysis of the current fleet stocks concerning the speed segment, quantities and age structures as well as future procurement potential

– An overview of the most important drivers behind the procurement and refurbishment

– Analysis of market shares of manufacturers as well as a forecast of the vehicle demand

– Overview of the manufacturers of high-speed trains and intercity multiple units including a brief description of the current range of products and services

– Excursus on alternative high-speed concepts and implications on the high-speed market

– A condensed presentation (diagrams) of important fleet-specific features by regions and countries

– A list of all rolling stock fleets and the current procurements of high-speed trains and in-tercity multiple units in the annex to the study

All in all, the study provides a well-founded analysis of the worldwide market for high-speed trains and intercity multiple units. The study therefore provides both companies established in the railway industry as well as operators with important information for operational and strategic planning.

SCI Verkehr analyses markets from the bottom up: based upon systematic observation of the railway markets, a detailed worldwide database of the installed base and projects forms the basis for in-depth studies on the various segments of the railway industry and the most im-portant regional focus markets. Within the scope of the continuous creation of the Multi Client Series, SCI Verkehr systematically analyses more than 100 core countries for railway tech-nology.

The study is available in English from August 2016.

Extract from the text, example region Market Overview

The market for high-speed transport in Eastern Europe is very heterogeneous and only par-tially of interest with regard to the high-speed train market. Most countries work on their con-ventional rail neetwork, the aim mostly being a combination of rail freight and regular pas-senger transport. Only few countries have a high-speed […] […] Market Environment/Transport Market The overall economic conditions in Eastern Europe and therefore the potential for high-speed transport vary considerably from country to country. […] The strongly outdated railway infrastructure needs to be renewed and has meanwhile bene-fited from the partly regained economic development and the intensive funding by the Euro-pean Union. […] All infrastructure projects in Eastern Europe under construction or planned concern a maxi-mum speed between 200 km/h and 300 km/h. SCI Verkehr expects that the high-speed rail network in this region will increase from xxx km at the end of 2015 to around xxx km at the end of the decade. […]

Because of sub-sidence, high investments of an estimated EUR xxx billion in the high-speed network were necessary to keep up operation.

Vehicle fleet, age structure and market shares The original fleet of xxx 12-car high-speed trains of the xxx type was delivered by a Japanese consortium of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Nippon Sharyo, Toshiba and Hitachi between 2004 and 2005. They are based on the Shinkansen series 700 and are somewhat faster with a maximum speed of 300 km/h. In 2012, another contract was awarded to the Japanese con-sortium as part of the first option from the existing contract for another four 12-car units. They are to meet the constantly increasing demand and the three new stations which were put into operation in 2015. Important Current and Planned Procurement Projects As part of the option pulled in 2012, THSRC has two further options. Following the clearance of the financial issues and a reduction in fares, a further (although smaller) fleet increase is possible.

Market volume and market development The development of the Taiwanese high-speed train market will largely be limited to renewal and maintenance as no further lines are planned. Fleet renewal will not be necessary in the near future as the fleet is still very young. Smaller fleet extensions also as part of existing options are possible due to the increasing passenger figures.

Kawasaki Rolling Stock is the rolling stock division of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI), which incorporates

the operating units Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. based in Yonkers (New York, USA) for serving the North American

market and Rolling Stock Company (headquartered in Hyogo-Ku).

The company is positioned as a leading Japanese manufacturer and focuses on the production of metros, EMUs

and high-speed trains. Kawasaki’s main sales regions are the domestic market of Japan, other Asian countries

and North America. Major overseas orders outside Asia included new metro models for the Washington Metro-

politan Area Transit Authority and New York City Transit. Kawasaki’s goal is to further strengthen its position in

the US market and in high-speed rail projects in particular.

Revenue has been fluctuating between JPY 120 and 190 billion over the last ten years. In 2015 Kawasaki Rolling

Stock company reached a turnover of JPY 147 billion, approximately the same level as in 2013 and 2009 and a

clear improvement compared to other years. The increase is reasoned to stem from relatively large metro orders

from Singapore and Taiwan. From 2016 on, revenues could slightly decrease again in the short term. Profitability

increased compared to the two previous years. Kawasaki has been able to increase profitability since 2012,

recovering it to the same level as in 2010. Revenues from rolling stock have been around EUR 1 billion in the

past years.

Sites of final assembly

Kawasaki Rolling Stock has three production sites. The largest, Hyogo Works (Kobe, Japan), has existed since 1906 and supplies rolling stock across the whole world. From Hyogo Works, Kawasaki supplies rolling stock domestically and internationally.

High-speed trains are manufactured at the main site in Kobe, Japan.
