English

News from English Our students have surfaced from a heavy week of examinations and our staff have been working tirelessly to get the exams marked and returned to students this week. We are now moving into new units of work and exciting texts to round out the semester: Year 7: Cultural Stories: looking at the story-telling traditions around the world and in different cultures, including Australian Indigenous culture. Year 8: Call to Adventure: Students will look at the hero’s journey narrative structure and how it appears in short stories and film. Year 9: Romeo and Juliet: A classic study of Shakespeare, exploring conflict, love and family relationships. Year 10: Classes will be doing a combination of Shakespeare’s world and a film study of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? in preparation for Term 3. Year 11: Standard English are starting their Close Study of Text on Peter Weir’s iconic film Witness. Year 12: Will have the opportunity to attend HSC workshops at Sydney University with Mr Francis. We hope that they find these workshops helpful for their HSC preparation and study. We’d like to thank all of the students for their incredible efforts during the exams, and the parents who have assisted students during this time. We hope our students get the results that they have worked so hard for. Our CAPA staff are super-excited for the work that our students have done for Choir, Dance Festival and Southern Stars, which is coming up in August. Watch this space for more exciting news on Southern Stars in Term 3! Ms Etheridge English

A step closer to transitioning to the New Financial System

Kanahooka High School will be transitioning to the new NSW public schools’ finance system. What this means for students and parents is that from 30 June 2017 we will not be able to receipt any payments in any form, be it cash or cheque or POP (on-line). Our new system is scheduled to be up and running some time in August. We will keep you up to date with the progress and advise when we can start receipting again. School invoices have now been issued and we ask if you can make any payments, be that part of, or in full by 30 June. If you have any concerns, please contact Melinda Arrighi, Office Manager on 4261 4011.

Deputy Principal Stage 6

Stage 6 Report As part of the ongoing improvements and strategies for our Year 12 students, we have introduced a systematic form of revision across all the faculties. This approach sees each subject line focus on a key revision area over each fortnight. These include:

Extended Responses

Deconstructing Questions

Glossary/Terms

Short Answer Responses

Examination Techniques and Multiple Choice Responses

Staff meet every four weeks to discuss how they have implemented the strategies and share resources. The general student response has been positive and they prefer the structured approach across all faculties. Each fortnight the focus for that subject line changes so that all six areas are covered for each student.

Last week saw Year 11 complete their examinations. As well as being integral in the reporting process, we will use these exam results to target areas of deficiency. A similar approach to the Year 12 model will be introduced in Term 3.

A reminder to all senior students that KHS has a number of support structures in place to assist them achieve their goals. These include Kullillah, the After School Tutorial Centre and Uni Tutors. Please take advantage of these support structures, or speak to your Year Adviser or Deputy to ensure a smooth transition to the HSC in October.

Checklist: How to best support your child during their HSC

Aim to build a support network of teachers, friend and families around your child for

guidance and a helping hand.

Talk to your child! Keep the lines of communication open at all times (especially

during the most stressful).

Stay informed by attending and speaking to teachers/university representatives, etc.

Negotiate your expectations around study, free time and leisure activities. This may

require some flexibility on your part.

Celebrate successes throughout the year. This can be as simple as improving the

result in a task or achieving a short term goal.

Aim to reduce the family stressors on your child, especially around examination

time.

Be realistic as to what your son/daughter may be able to achieve in the HSC.

Provide as much practical, loving support as you can!

VET

Hospitality VET Career Expo Catering Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students participated over 2 days in the Career Expo Catering. Day 1 was the busiest with students catering for 50 VIP Principals in the function room and over 350 Career Expo Representatives. The students also washed and dried crockery, glasses and cutlery for the function room. The Year 12 students set the tables as part of the Serve Food and Beverage unit in Hospitality. It was all hands on deck when the food arrived. The students in a very short amount of time placed the food on the tables provided. During the service the students were very professional in their manner and were happy to advise and help the representatives with dietary needs and requests. At the end of the shift, the students washed, dried and packed everything away in the correct place. Day 2 was a bit quieter and the students had the opportunity to make mini chicken schnitzel burgers before service. Again, the students were very professional in their manner in serving the representatives on the day. The students are required to complete 12 service periods over 2 years whilst studying Hospitality. The majority of this is carried out in the Mandatory Work Placement. The experience of catering for the Careers Expo will go towards one service period. I would like to thank Ms Phelan for allowing the students to experience this catering event and to my Hospitality students for stepping up and taking on the challenge and being professional at all times. Principal’s Conference A selection of Year 12 students have been participating in the catering for the Principal’s Conference held

at school each term. The students make a variety of sandwiches, sweets and a fruit platter. The students

also make a variety of beverages to order for them to drink. Pictures below show the students catering

skills:

Year 11 Hospitality

Year 11 Hospitality continue to grow in strength in the practical unit: Use Food Preparation Equipment.

Over the term the students are honing in on their precision cuts and making food items to industry

standard. Some pictures below of the student’s work:

Year 12 Hospitality

Year 12 Hospitality are busy working through the competencies in Hospitality. The students have just

completed the competency; Serve Food and Beverages. The students did simulation role plays in class:

setting tables, napkin folds, greeting and serving guests food and drinks. Some pictures below of the

student’s work:

It is important for students to complete all the assessment tasks both practical and theory in Hospitality to be deemed competent. Students need to have a study plan in place for exam revision and catch up on work at home. Students need to be wearing the correct PPE in practical lessons and on work placement. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Careers

Our students gain vocational skills

Congratulations to the sixty plus students from Years 11 and 12 who have enrolled this year in one subject at TAFE or another Registered Training Organisation, as part of their HSC. Many students have achieved 100% attendance and are proving how much they value vocational learning. Courses studied include: Construction, Early Childhood, Bricklaying, Beauty, Hairdressing, Human Services (Nursing), Property Services, Automotive Technology, Animal Studies, Hospitality, Retail Baking, Community Services and Business Services. Well done to all our students for their hard work balancing school with external studies. Keep up the good work! Ms Phelan Careers News from Textiles Technology Students in Years 7 and 8 have been busy this term learning about screen printing and appliqué.

The students have been drawing designs, from which they then made stencils for screen printing and appliqué.

Appliqué is cutting out fabric into a desired shape and using Visofix, a type of glue that melts when heat is applied from the iron to bond the two fabrics together. The students then carefully either hand or machine stitched around the shape firmly attaching it to the fabric.

The students incorporated both these decoration techniques into their designs and lastly, they all learnt the use of the overlocker to neatly finish off their work.

We are now all busy finishing off our final project before the end of term, and looking forward to seeing what the students create.
