September 2014

From the Principal

This is the final week for our current Yr12 group. Their graduation ceremony is this Wednesday and the Yr12 formal is on Thursday evening. Preparations so far indicate both will be an outstanding success. Year 12 parents in particular are encouraged to come along to the graduation assembly as this a most important event in the life of every one of these students. Yr12 are currently preparing for their HSC exams which start early next term and we wish every one of them the very best.

Staffing

Some of our teaching staff are appointed via interview and this requires a community representative to be part of the panel. We are seeking to expand the number of parents available to work on these panels. If you are interested please feel free to contact myself the school.

School Zone Road Rules

After a recent traffic review of the school and it‟s surrounding precinct a series of recommendations have been made by local council, the RMS, and local Police regarding our use of the schools Flagstaff Rd entrance. These include; a wider footpath, parent drop off areas, the service buses stopping on the Western side of the exit/entry laneway, increased signage and more regular police patrols. Police will be targeting school zones in the coming months and they have asked that everyone be reminded about observing the road rules. These include speed restrictions at the start and end of school and parking zones. Also another reminder to parents that all visitors to the school must not use the Cowper St entrance unless they are picking up a sick child.

School Plan

A new school plan is currently being formed for the next 3 years 2015-2017. This plan will outline the schools strategic directions and priorities. We are currently in a collaborative period of gathering staff and parent input and analysing our previous school data. Once completed this plan will be available on our school website.

Facility Upgrade

The school has just agreed to an upgrade of the school‟s gymnasium. This includes a new drainage system, replacing some elements of the roof and adding „whirly birds‟, internal painting and a new timber floor. We believe these upgrades will improve the quality of the programs we offer our students. The school car park has also recently been upgraded to accommodate to a growing student population

UFO’s Land in Support

The Support faculty was recently invaded by a fleet of UFOs. The ships came in a variety of shapes and colours as did their alien occupants. The project was part of the Support 9-10 English class science fiction theme.

Koori Kids Update

On the 22nd of July 2014 the Warrawong High

Koori Kids participated in the Naidoc Day touch

footy comp with 7 other local high schools. Our

team tried their best and had plenty of good

games, yet was unsuccessful in taking out any

victories Students from years 9 to 12 have been part of the

Aime program which is a dedicated course that

aims to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

students complete their year 12 HSC. Every few

weeks the students would travel to Wollongong

University to better understand their identity, their

school work and what it means to be successful

not only in your community but within yourself.

(Shout out to Mr Watts for being our chauffeur!)

Another Win For Warrawong

Year 10 student Tyson Frigo along with IEC

students Fern Sutiyawan and Sirichai Rittimas were

amongst the “Top 20” finalists in the Illawarra

Mercury‟s recent design competition for “budding

cartoonists and caricaturists” and had their artworks

on display at the Wollongong Art Gallery for two

weeks.

The competition brief was to produce a cartoon or

caricature that reflected a popular news topic or

personality from an Illawarra Mercury news story

during May.

Fern chose to draw a caricature of Liberal politician

Marie Ficarra who used her pet schnauzer as an

alibi at the ICAC inquiry. Sirichai compared the

contrasting styles of two mothers Australia‟s richest

mother - Gina Rinehart and Barnado‟s Illawarra

“Mother of the Year” Gloria Nascimento.

Tyson drew new Illawarra Dragon Benji Marshall

leaving the Tigers.

At the Gallery launch, Tyson walked away with one

of the major prizes valued at $400. Congratulations

to all the students on their achievement.
