High performance sealing for all marine applications

Introduction

James Walker products are globally recognised by marine engineers for their quality and reliability. These are assets the James Walker name and Lion logo have fostered in the marine industry since the 1880s when our Scottish engineer founder, Mr James Walker, introduced his innovative compression packing for high-efficiency steam engines.

Since those early days, our products have increased beyond recognition in range and technical excellence to match the complex and demanding applications of today’s hardworking marine equipment.

Today we manufacture and supply a highly diverse range of fluid sealing items and other specialised products to the world’s commercial and naval fleets, as well as to shipyards and original equipment manufacturers. We also produce many specialised sealing items for marine diesels and associated equipment.

Global supply

Our role as a global supplier to the marine sector demands an international manufacturing base, plus highly efficient sales and distribution operations.

Our products and services are available through an international network of James Walker companies and official distributors at most principal ports worldwide (see pages 42-43). We back this network with our highly developed logistics operation that gives customers the surety of supply they need.

Because most marine customers rely heavily on e-commerce and e-catalogues, we have invested significantly in IT infrastructure to meet efficiently global logistical demands with our fast-track Express Service.

Stocks of James Walker products are held worldwide for immediate despatch.

Partnering contracts

We also establish long-term partnering contracts with major marine operators for the global supply of products under fixed pricing structures.

This includes full support for ships at sea, ship builders, repairers and chandlers — as well as tank container cleaning stations, operators, manufacturers and repair depots.

These contracts are administered by dedicated managers with specialised teams of experts whose sole responsibility is to service the needs of that customer’s sites across different countries and continents. In many cases we hold standardised ranges of consumable products and customer-specific products local to their key ports for immediate ship supply.

However, our service is not limited to the supply of items to meet planned maintenance and unscheduled shutdowns.

Our marine industry specialists work in close harmony with customers’ engineers and scientists to solve their complex fluid sealing problems and generate best-value solutions. This leads to the development of new products that meet ever-increasing production demands, changing Health & Safety regimes and new environmental legislation.

Our highly automated warehouse in the UK contains millions ofproducts for Express Service delivery to vessels across the globe.

Compression packings

Introduction

Packed glands provide cost effective sealing for most valves, reciprocating and centrifugal pumps, and other rotary equipment. Our extensive range includes packings made from PTFE, aramid, glass fibres, graphite and natural fibres. Many contain advanced lubrication systems, and some are designed to work efficiently under poor mechanical conditions.

Significant advances in materials and lubricants, as well as packing design, mean you will be able to select a packing to suit your application on board with the confidence that it will help to keep equipment operating reliably year-in and year-out.

Our Quick Reference Chart on pages 4 and 5 presents an overview of our products that are most suited to marine operations, with fuller details contained in this section. James Walker has over 25 grades of packing

Supagraf® Premier

This cost-effective packing is one of our top-of-the-range fugitive emission control products for both rotary and rising stem valves handling hydrocarbon liquid fuels and gases, lubricating oils and chemicals in the marine sector. It is manufactured in exfoliated graphite, and reinforced in a novel way for additional resistance to pressure and extrusion. An advanced lubricant system prevents the pick-up of graphite on the vale stem.

• A best available technique (BAT) product for reducing fugitive emissions in line with the European Union’s IPPC Directive.

• Third party tested and certified to TA Luft Rev 7.2002, VDI 2440 for VOC emission control in valves. Met TA Luft High Grade requirements in tests for Ruhr Oel (Deutsche BP and Petróleos de Venezuela).

• In tests to API 622, it produced an average emission level of 10.5ppmV, with a maximum 37ppmV over five thermal and 1510 mechanical cycles.• Shell specification SPE 77/312 Class A, Rev 16, 10.2007.• API 607 Edition 4 Fire Safety, to an expanded specification.• No special fitting techniques needed.

Mechanical seals — new

27To order or get further details, please call your local contact shown on pages 42-43 or listed at www.jameswalker.biz 27

New mechanical seals

James Walker offers a full range of new mechanical seals for marine pumps and compressors. With over 20 years of experience, we have established mechanical seal designs suitable for all European and Japanese marine pumps.

We combine our design experience with paramount elastomer technology and seal face material knowledge, to offer our customers reliable and often extended service for duties in all engine room pumps and cargo pumps for gas, chemical, product and oil tankers.

The seal designs shown alongside are the most popular we supply. Each design is available in a broad range of variations and material combinations. We are able to supply a vast range of complementary designs — even for deep well pumps and conventional screw type and split case centrifugal type pumps.

Service capabilitiesThe limits of pressure, temperature and shaft speed depend on the seal design, seal face combination and the nature of the media to be sealed. Changes in operating capabilities of a mechanical seal are mainly influenced by the selected elastomer type and seal face materials.

The performance, lifetime and capability of a mechanical seal is heavily influenced by the grade, quality and combination of the seal face materials used. Our extensive experience in the marine industry enables us to make recommendations to help maximise a mechanical seal’s working life by using the best face material combinations and elastomers for specfific seal duties. We supply the following seal face materials:• Various grades of carbon• Various grades of silicone carbide• Tungsten carbide• Ceramic• Ni-resist• Stainless steel• Chrome oxide coated stainless steel• Tungsten carbide coated stainless steel.

The selection of the elastomer type primarily influences temperature capabilities and chemical resistance. See the following guidelines:

Services include:• All types, sizes and makes of mechanical seal expertly

refurbished.• Savings of 40-60% compared to new seals, depending on level

of damage.• Our extensive stocks of spare parts — springs, ‘O’ rings, face

materials — enable a fast turnaround with seals reconditioned in 24 to 48 hours and returned on board.

• We use OEM spares or James Walker parts of same or improved specification.

• Lapped seal faces are protected by a thermoplastic coating. • Seals can be boxed and coded for onboard identification.• We also undertake seal-failure analysis and re-engineering for

improved performance.

Our experience with pumps and mechanical seals enables us to provide sealing solutions for every marine application — from boiler room and cargo pumps, to the upgrading of seawater pumps from compression packings to mechanical seals.

Blue box systemOur blue box system for handling, packaging and labelling mechanical seals for reconditioning has many advantages.

• The used seal is identified as the correct seal for a pump.• Each seal is labelled regarding the vessel, part number, pump

description, maker and type. (Please state the pumped fluid as this enables us to select the correct materials for ‘O’ rings and seal faces.)

• James Walker always provides a full inspection report, and creates a database of the mechanical seals on each vessel. With this database we can readily quote for replacement seals.

• Blue boxes can be delivered to our workshops, or collected on board by our personnel.

• Refurbished or new mechanical seals are individually packaged and printed with all relevant information for simple identification on board.

InformationHealth warning: If PTFE or fluoroelastomer (eg, FKM, FFKM, FEPM) products are heated to elevated temperatures, fumes will be produced which may give unpleasant effects, if inhaled. Whilst some fumes are emitted below 250°C from fluoroelastomers or below 300°C from PTFE, the effect at these temperatures is negligible. Care should be taken to avoid contaminating tobacco with particles of PTFE or fluoroelastomer, or with PTFE dispersion, which may remain on hands or clothing. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available on request.
