FROM THE HEADMASTERDear Parents, Students and Friends,

I have greatly enjoyed the beginning of the year and the beginning of my time at Marist North Shore. I have come across a new surprise that I had not been expecting, almost on a daily basis.

The Swimming Carnival was just one of these surprises. The House spirit, organisation, participation of the students were all unexpectedly high. The venue was also not too bad!

I have been trying to describe the students to my friends at home. I have come up with inadequate words like ‘friendly’. Another new teacher, Dr Jensen, used the word ‘respectful’, which I believe is more accurate.

On meeting the College Staff, I asked them to each nominate three things that they like about our College. When we tallied these the top three were:

1. The support for students 2. The community 3. Marist Spirit and spirit of service I am impressed with the opportunities that are available to the students at this College. I have noted: music, debating, public speaking and a good set of sports. Some of what I see happening in Teaching and Learning is really outstanding. The opportunities to be part of the Solidarity group are quite unique. The Catholic Education Office has the theme this year of ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matt 5:3). The work of the Solidarity group with the poor via Night Patrol, the work in the café or

some of the other ventures are a chance for the students to really help other people who are in need.

Pope Francis has asked us to, ‘Give a voice to the cry of the poor’. I am really keen to see our students continue this wonderful tradition in 2014. We are beginning the planning for our three Immersion experiences to Cambodia, India and the Northern Territory. These are another exciting opportunity for our students to go out to the poor and to learn of other cultures and their needs.

The first big chance that we have to meet as a community will be at the Parents & Friends Welcome Drinks on Friday 21st February. I hope you will take the opportunity to be part of this gathering. I am looking forward to meeting this important part of the Marist North Shore community. The school year moves very quickly, even your time as parents at the school will also move very quickly, so lets begin 2014 by gathering as community.

FROM THE DEPUTY HEADMASTERWELCOME AND SERVICE

Welcome to our new year and a special welcome to all new families to our Marist community. My prayer and hope for our journey together in 2014 is that all in our Marist community feel a sense of connectedness to our Catholic and Marist traditions that enables us to develop strong mind and gentle hearts.

Our theme for the year is titled ‘Service’. Once again it has been modelled from the Australian Marist Schools theme of ‘to serve one another’. I have often mentioned to students within the classroom that while we are looking to improve and develop our challenges or weaknesses in a topic, it is important not to lose sight of developing and building on our strengths. I say this because maintaining is not improving. I have always felt that our community at Marist has a healthy understanding of “serving one another”. Our aim through this theme is therefore to learn and continue to explore a deeper sense of the Marist quality of being “others centred”. Thus, hopefully we become committed and passionate to listen to the call of those around us.

As in previous years, a banner (see page 4) has been designed to capture some symbolism and evoke some emotion and thought for our theme. We must thank Marcus Woodfield (12 Salta) for his time, energy and skill in depicting the above values from our theme in images and words. Within the artwork we have our title of Service coupled with a quote from a letter from St. Peter, “As each of you receive a gift, use it to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10). This highlights the importance of sharing who we are and the gifts we have been blessed with, not just people here in our Marist community but also in our wider community.

Marcellin Champagnat and Jesus Christ are our shining lights and examples of servant leaders. The image of Marcellin Champagnat carrying and supporting depicts for us the strength, care and love required in serving others. We are reminded of his legacy in this image as he supported so courageously the youth and his fellow Marist Brothers.

Courage, Respect and Presence are the values that the College Pastoral Team coupled with the Senior Leadership Team are focusing on in 2014 to ensure a deeper sense of the meaning of service is discovered.

GENERAL INFORMATION UniformI would like to thank parents for their efforts in ensuring that their son(s) have returned to school in the uniform in a neat and presentable manner. I ask that parents continue to work with the College in ensuring that students wear their uniform with pride and respect. This means the little things: socks up, top button done up, shirts tucked in, face cleanly shaven - are seen as important by our young men. The boys have been reminded that students who wear their uniform poorly or are not correctly attired will be issued a detention.

Attendance‘Boys Education’ literature suggests a settled learning environment, where students are in class as much as possible, as significant in providing the best opportunity for positive learning outcomes. Parents/Guardians are requested to contact the College if their child will be absent from school. Parents/Guardians should note that they should ring before 9:30am on the day of absence. A text will be sent to parents if there son is absent and no phone call has been received.

Parents are to apply for Exemption for Leave by completing the required form which can be found on the College webite. This form is required for any planned leave that the student must take. This form must be given to the Headmaster at least two weeks before the required leave. This Upcoming EventsParents are reminded of the upcoming events:

FAITH FORMATIONSERVICE

It is my pleasure to join the Marist College North Shore community as the Director of Faith Formation. I have heard so much about this fine school and I have learnt so much already about the wonderful work done by our students in the community.

The College theme for the year is Service – the act of helping or doing work for someone. When we think of some synonyms for service, the words: act of assistance, good turn, favour, kindness, helping hand, assistance, help, aid and ministries - come to mind.

At Marist North Shore, Solidarity stands out immediately as an area in which our students shine in this regard. Immersion experiences, Night Patrol, work in Cafes and fundraising for MAPS are only some of the ways in which our students reach out to the poor and marginalised in our society in service to the community.

As Pope Francis stated in his address to the people of Varginha in Rio last year:

“You, can offer the world a valuable lesson in solidarity, a word that is too often forgotten or silenced, because it is uncomfortable. I would like to make an appeal to those in possession of greater resources, to public authorities and to all people of good will who are working for social justice: never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity! No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world!

Everybody, according to his or her particular opportunities and responsibilities, should be able to make a personal contribution to putting an end to so many social injustices. The culture of selfishness and individualism that often prevails in our society is not what builds up and leads to a more habitable world: it is the culture of solidarity that does so, seeing others not as rivals or statistics, but brothers and sisters.”

This week, Mr Versteegh launched Marist Solidarity with the students for 2014. Our students who freely give of their time, money and material possessions are indeed an inspiration to us all. I look forward to supporting their wonderful work throughout the year and, in conjunction with the College’s theme of Service, may we all be inspired by the words of scripture: “Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received” (1 Peter 4:10).

TEACHING & LEARNINGACADEMIC AWARDS

Congratulations to all of the recipients of the Year 7 - 9 Semester Two 2013 Academic Excellence and Commitment Awards. See the next page for all the award winners.

Setting goals, organising yourselves at home and at school will help with a consistent approach in order to achieve your best personal results. Remember too that your work ethic determines your end result – practice, practice, practice in order to achieve.

HIGH ACHIEVERS

Well done to the HSC Class of 2013 which also consisted of many student completing accelerated courses at the College. Over thirty students received a Band 6 result which is quite outstanding for a cohort of quite a small size. Many other students just missed out on a Band 6 by one or two marks. It was so wonderful to have so many of the students who received Band 6 and/or ATAR of 90+ return to the College to be acknowledged at the HSC High Achievers Assembly.

We wish these boys all the best for your lives beyond Marist North Shore.

Ann McGovernDirector of Teaching & Learning

High Achievers from the Class of 2013 stayed back after assembly to answer questions and provide tips to the current Year 12 as to

how to negotiate the HSC

YEAR 9 ACADEMIC AWARDS Welcome back to school to all students and teachers. We hope you had a refreshing break and possibly caught up on some reading.

The library has been brightened up with a new coat of paint, and the collection has been tidily trimmed to leave us with a healthy library.

The exciting news for this year is that eBooks are now available to all students and teachers through Overdrive. These can be accessed through our Oliver library software. We will endeavour to help you explore the new collection throughout the year.

Happy Reading,

Simon KaddissiTeacher Librarian

DEBATING2014 SEASON

Welcome to the 2014 Debating season. This warm welcome is extended to experienced debaters from previous years and to newcomers who may wish to enter the fray of inter-school debating. We hope to make the season an enjoyable one for all participants.

Debating is a Friday afternoon and evening activity for most Fridays from the middle of Term 1 and most of Term 2. If teams are successful there are knockout final round debates at the start of Term 3.

Catholic Schools Debating Association (CSDA) has allowed us a choice of either one team per year level or two teams per year level. This year we are keen to offer more students the opportunity to debate hence we are hoping enough students will nominate to allow us to take the two-team option. The normal season is six debates which, coupled to our pre-season practice debates, should give all debaters plenty of opportunity to improve their debating skills.

The best website for students to read and learn more about debating is: www.learndebating.com

Any parents who wish to assist on the debating evenings or be part of the coaching team are more than welcome to contact me by email: [email protected]
