Beineinu - Between UsThe Talmud (Berachot 58b) states that when one sees 600,000 Jews (the number that were at Sinai), one should recite a special blessing: Baruch atah Hashem Elokenu melech ha-olam Chacham Ha-razim – Blessed are you O Lord our God, wise knower of all secrets. Why is this the blessing for seeing a multitude? When looking at a crowd, we lose sight of the individuals standing before us and

only see the crowd. But God always sees directly into the heart of each individual. Regardless of the number of people in the world, each one of us stands in unique and personal relationship with the Holy One.

There will not be 600,000 people in synagogue for the High Holy Days, but there will be quite a crowd. There is something majestic and moving about seeing our entire congregation come together. We enjoy reconnecting with old friends, some of whom we may not have seen all year. We are blessed that B’nai Jeshurun is a congregation that sees itself as an extended family in which each member is precious to us, in which we reach out to and care for each other.

This year, as we contemplate our bonds, we also meditate upon our connection to those who were a part of our first 150 years. They, too, are a part of us. They envisioned a congregation that blended tradition and modernity, that sought to adapt to hold onto changing generations, that would be a force for good in our community, reaching out to help those in need and committed to social justice. They desired to strengthen Jewish life, ensure the creation of a homeland in Israel for our people, and be a wellspring of spiritual faith and strength. We are the inheritors of that extraordinary legacy.

Could the sixteen men who gathered in Herman Sampliner’s home on California Alley in 1886 have known what they were creating? Could they ever have imagined that from those humble beginnings B’nai Jeshurun would become a beacon of light for so many? That it would play such a vital role in shaping the Jewish future?

Baruch Chacham Ha-Razim – Blessed is the knower of secrets. For only God could have contemplated the extraordinary journey we have taken as a congregation. May we live up to the gift we have been given by ensuring that B’nai Jeshurun continues yet another 150 years. May we, too, merit being remembered for guaranteeing the Jewish future and for healing our world. Naomi joins me in wishing you a Shana Tova u’Metukah!

President’s MessageUnfortunately, most employers do not give extra days off for the High Holy Days, and my employer is no exception. That’s why every year in the early part of the summer, I look at the Jewish calendar to find out how many vacation days I’m going to have to “give up” so I can make sure I’m in shul. Perhaps, like me, you looked this year and

thought, “Ugh! Why can’t at least one of the days fall on a weekend!”

I will leave it to our rabbis to teach about how the calendar works. I must say, though, that for me, the time I spend away from work and at B’nai Jeshurun on the High Holy Days is some of the best time I spend all year. As Laura will tell you, more often than not, my vacation time is spent in part checking work e-mails, shul e-mails, or any other e-mails that come my way. The High Holy Days are really the only time when I’m able to set that all aside and reflect on how I can become a better person, a better employee (though I try to stay away from that one because it’s too much like work!), a better synagogue president, a better father, a better husband. I look forward to seeing all of you during the upcoming High Holy Day season at B’nai Jeshurun, and I hope that you take advantage of the opportunity to reflect, atone, and find ways to make the upcoming year even better than the last one. It will be worth the time off!

On behalf of the Officers and the Board of Trustees, and most especially on behalf of my wife Laura, and our children Jonathan and Dara, we all wish you and yours a Shana Tova u’Metukah, a happy, sweet, and healthy new year.

B’shalom,Jody Katzner

Cantor’s CornerIn this month’s Torah portion of Nitzavim the opening verses state, “You all stand before G-d, the heads of the tribes, the elders, all men of Israel, your children, women, converts, wood choppers and water carriers” need to keep the covenant of G-d. We know every word and letter has a specific purpose in the Torah. Why can’t

the verse just state, “All people of Israel” are responsible to keep the covenant of G-d which would obviously include everyone?

Our sages explain a very important principle, which is that we are all accountable for one another. No person is an island unto himself. The concept of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ “all in” is not a new one. In our religion, we are at our best when we are united, not just due to tragedy or perilous times, but in all situations. Like a chain link fence requires all of the links to make the fence, we require harmony and cooperation to have a vibrant community. Our successes and failures impact everyone. It is imperative for our survival to impart this to our children and future generations to come. Being a minority on the world stage does not allow for much margin of error. We cannot afford to be divisive; we need to be welcoming and not judgmental.

We will soon be ushering in Rosh Hashanah and undergoing a transformative experience spiritually and hopefully with our relationships. Within the process of teshuva, we analyze our actions and should try to strive for improvement between our daily interaction with G-d and our fellow man. We are not so naïve that we suppose everyone can be best of friends, but an element of respect or cordiality should prevail. Treating each other well is also respecting G-d, as each one of us has within us His holy spark.

As we usher in the New Year, may we be tolerant and be blessed with health, prosperity and peace of mind. Sabrina, Shaina, Abby and I wish you all a Shana Tova u’Metukah.

Education & YouthA Child in the Forest

There is a story in Jewish lore of a child who lived near a forest. Almost daily, the young boy went off into the woods by himself. His father was generally tolerant and understanding and didn’t want

to interfere, but worried that forests could be dangerous. One day the father pulled his son aside. “I see you go into the forest every day. I don’t want to stop you, but I’m concerned for your safety. Why do you go there, and what do you do?”

“I go into the forest to find God,” was the boy’s response. His father was moved, “That’s beautiful,” he said, “and wonderful to hear. But don’t you know? God is the same everywhere.”

“God is,” answered the boy, “but I’m not.”

As we approach the High Holy Days, we are reminded that though God is constantly ever present, we can change. We are not the same people we were last year, and we will not be the same people we are today or will be one year from now. As we come to the sanctuary this Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, with thousands of others, to pray, to ask for forgiveness and atonement, we alter our own state to feel closer to God, and it changes us. It is that very ability to change which resonates most deeply, as we strive through our connection with God to become better people in the year to come. Our entire enterprise of teshuva, repentance, is dependent on it.

May we all be like the child in the forest, finding ways to feel close to God and to transform ourselves into the people we wish to become.

Shana Tova u’Metukah! Have a happy, healthy and sweet 5776!

A Special Program Just for Teens (6th-12th Grade)

Carl’s father was a federal judge. His mother was a doctor. Yet he became homeless due to an alcohol and drug addiction. His life changed forever in a homeless shelter; October 24, 2005 was the last day he used drugs or alcohol. Four months later, Project Save was born. Carl taught himself how to build a nonprofit organization through research and reading. Come to hear his compelling story.

Calling All 11th & 12th GradersJoin the rabbis and cantor once a month on Monday evenings for dinner and discussion – starting Monday, October 19 (more details coming soon!).

“My dad was a federal judge. My mother was a doctor in Shaker Heights. And yet, I was homeless for a long time because of alcoholism and drug addiction. At 2100 Lakeside, in a homeless shelter, my life changed forever. Oct. 24, 2005 was the last day of drugs and alcohol.“

Four months later, Project Save was birthed. Carl taught himself how to build a nonprofit organization through research and reading.

KOSHER FOOD DRIVE“This is My chosen fast. . . Share your bread with the hungry, take the homeless into your home; clothe the naked when you see them, do not turn away from people in need.”

- Isaiah 58:6

Between Selichot and Sukkot, we ask each family to bring in non-perishable food to the synagogue to place in the collection bins in Gross Atrium or at the school entrance. All food will be donated to the JFSA Food Pantry. Please do not bring in expired food.

HIGH HOLY DAY DECORUMWhile attending High Holy Day services, women should dress modestly, with no bare shoulders, midriffs or mini-skirts. Immodest attire will require the ushers to ask guests to wear a shawl or a wrap. All women who ascend the bimah (altar) must wear a head covering. Lace chapel caps are available at the entrance of both services. Males are required to wear a kippa (skullcap) and all Jewish men after Bar Mitzvah age are asked to wear a tallit (prayer shawl). All these items are available for borrowing outside both services.

Thank you for dressing appropriately in keeping with the spirit of the High Holy Days.

A Friendly Reminder…At least 25% of the current year’s dues plus all prior obligations must be paid before High Holy Day tickets will be provided. If you are unable to pay this amount, please contact Jay Ross, executive director, to discuss your situation.

Ushers NeededB’nai Jeshurun is looking for congregants to help usher during the High Holy Days at both the main building and Gross Schechter Day School. We offer convenient time slots where you can help as much or as little as your schedule allows. Your help to keep the decorum of the holidays will mean an excellent experience for all who attend. Please contact Nelson Pole ([email protected]) if you are interested.

SukkotLulav & Etrog Sets for Sukkot

Blessing the lulav and etrog is the Jewish way of thanking God for the blessings of the earth during Sukkot. To purchase your own lulav and etrog set, please contact Diane Shalom by Tuesday, September 8. Late orders may not be able to be filled. Deluxe sets are $45 each and student (smaller) sets are $40 each. Orders may be picked up in the synagogue office on Thursday and Friday, September 24 and 25 between 9 am and 3 pm.

Congregational Sukkah Decorating Party & LunchSunday, September 27 • 11 am - 1:00 pm

Free! Open to all ages. Please RSVP to the synagogue office. Come make sukkah decorations, help put up our sukkah and enjoy a pizza lunch!

Annual Men’s Club Sukkah Judging

“It’s cool to see what ideas people have

for their sukkahs. For example, we put Silly Bandz in our sukkah and won the Silliest Sukkah award. One

family won an award for the Most Plastic Fruit.”

Men’s Club, the Bessie Hershey Religious School, Jr. Kadima and Kadima invite all interested families to join the judging corps for the Men’s Club Annual Sukkah Judging Contest. Judging is a great way for children to see different types of sukkot built

by members of our congregation. Each team of judges will visit 3-5 sukkot during the week of Sukkot. The judges will take a picture with each host family and present the hosts with a gift from Men’s Club. Very often, drinks and snacks are enjoyed during the visit.

Please sign up with another family to form your judging team, or we will assign you to a team! Register through the synagogue office or by email at [email protected]. The annual Sukkah Awards Banquet will be held Friday, October 16. At the banquet, judges will be recognized for their service and the families who built sukkot will be given awards.

“Sukkah judging has become a

fun tradition in my family. We

love visiting different people and seeing how they decorate. People make

their sukkahs in so many different

ways that you can’t see just

one.”

Tidings Survey Response Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey about the new Tidings. We received excellent suggestions and have already implemented one of them (see Then & Now piece on page 3). Many of you were concerned that the color addition is costly and prices out potential advertisers. The cost of our ads is in-line or less than what the outside publisher was charging and we are now running fewer ads, which leaves more room for content. By bringing the advertising in-house and switching printers, we are able to offer you a better publication while saving money. We have also cut two pages from each issue to save paper.

If you have suggestions or concerns, please contact me. Diane Shalom, Editor

Cleveland was a winner again as Men’s Club subsidized a wonderful brunch and outing to Progressive Field to watch the Indians beat the Twins.
