Preface
High-Energy Radiation from Black Holes: From SupermassiveBlack Holes to Galactic Solar Mass Black Holes
The 35th assembly of COSPAR in Paris in July 2004included a meeting on ‘‘High-Energy Radiation from BlackHoles: from Supermassive Black Holes to Galactic SolarMass Black Holes’’. The meeting was designed to provideinsights on observations and models of the close surround-ings of black holes in very different astrophysical contexts, including accreting binary systems, the center of our andother galaxies and active galactic nuclei. Observations cov-ering the electro-magnetic spectrum from the radio domainto gamma rays were presented and discussed. The meetingtook place about 1.5 years after the launch of INTEGRALand therefore allowed the authors to present new results inthe hard X-ray domain.
The meeting was very well attended and included manyvery high quality presentations that lead to interesting dis-cussions. This issue of Advances in Space Research presentsa number of the contributions given during the conference. They are organised from galactic objects to extra galacticones to surveys.
The success of a meeting is always due to a large numberof people. In the case of a COSPAR meeting during a gen-eral assembly, these include the organisers of the wholemeeting. In Paris, the general assembly was a very livelyand interesting gathering of space scientists in whichseveral themes of interest to our community were wellrepresented. This gave rise to constructive interferencesbetween the participants of the various scientific meetings. The members of the scientific organising committee[T. Courvoisier (chair), P. Ubertini, J.-P. Roques, N. Lund,

J. Paul, R. Mushotzky, J. Kaastra, B. Wilkes, K. Makishi-ma, R. Sunyaev, E. Churazov, A. King] provided veryvaluable help in designing an optimum programme.
Clearly the value of the meeting is that given by theauthors of the papers. We are very grateful to them for aset of brilliant contributions. The authors who chose topresent their results in this issue also provided high qualitymanuscripts, for which they are warmly thanked. Thepapers presented here have been carefully peer reviewedby a number of astronomers including K. Beckwith,E. Churazov, L. Foschini, J. Paul, K. Pottschmidt, J.Rodriquez, R. Staubert, and M. Turler. We also thankthem for their help in preparing this set of papers for pub-lication. The staff of COSPAR and Elsevier (in particularPeggy Ann Shea and Carmel Moloney), helped us findour way in the jungle of the edition process without everloosing patience or temper; for this also we are grateful.
