The new McQuay International High Efficiency WaterSource Heat Pump line consists of standard range unitsaccommodating entering water temperatures between 20oFand 120oF (-7oC and 49oC) in cooling. The extended rangesystem has advantages in closed loop applications. Theability to operate at reduced water temperatures allows theloop temperature to fall to 20oF (-7oC) before supplemental(boiler) heat has to be added to the loop, thus taking fulladvantage of the heat available in the water loop obtainedfrom internal heat gains. The result is reduced boiler operationwhich means reduced energy consumption. This expansionin allowable entering water temperatures permits greaterflexibility in system design.

These impressive temperature allowances also make the

line ideal for use in earth-coupled systems. Geothermal orearth-coupled heat pump systems reside on the cutting edgein current HVAC technology. These systems comply with thetrends toward increasingly higher efficiencies andconscientious environmental practices in the heating andcooling industry, by utilizing the natural properties of the earthto provide heating and cooling to a building. In geothermalsystems, heat addition and rejection take place below theground, inside hundreds of feet of high density polyethylenepipe, known as a ground loop, which eliminates the need for aboiler and cooling tower. Fluid circulates between the sealedground loop and the geothermal units. The geothermal heatpump units then amplify and direct conditioned air to thedesired location.

Design features - Unit sizes 019 thru 060Three unique cabinet sizes make up our 11⁄2 through 5

ton horizontal high efficiency extended range heat pumpproduct line. The result is a consistent cabinet shape withthe lowest possible profile. The consistent shape makeslayout simple; the water, condensate and duct connectionsare in similar locations.

The cabinet is constructed of unpainted G-60 galvanizedsteel. Large panels are provided for access to the fan/motorcompartment and the compressor/control compartment. Theinteriors of the top and side panels and the bottom of theunit are covered with 1⁄2" (13 mm) thick, 11⁄2 lb. (681g) density,coated glass fiber insulation.

The filter is supported by factory mounted brackets whichallow for face removal. Unit sizes 019 through 060 have a 1"(25 mm) thick throwaway filter mounted in a combination filterrack and return air duct collar, thus eliminating field mountedbrackets. The filters can be removed from either side or fromthe bottom.

The water and condensate connections protrude throughthe outside of the cabinet. The water connections areFPT type for easy connection to flexible hoses. The largecondensate connection assures troublefree condensateremoval.

For additional safety, unit sizes 024 and larger have a 7 psi(48 kPa) low pressure switch to protect the compressor fromlow refrigerant charge. The low setting prevents nuisance tripsbut still provides adequate safety.

Fan section

The fan section includes the fan housing, fan wheel, fanmotorand drain pan. The fan section is separated from thecompressor section with an insulated divider panel formaximum sound attenuation. The large door provides serviceaccess to the fan motor.

The drain pan is insulated from the cabinet, painted forcorrosion protection and has ample height to allow for self-priming of the condensate trap.

The fan motor is a multi-speed, PSC type with integralmounting brackets and thermal overload protection. The motoris isolated from the fan housing for minimum vibrationtransmission. Units have a terminal strip on the motor for simplemotor speed change without going back to the controlbox. All the fan/motor assemblies have a removable orificering on the housing to accommodate motor and fan wheelremoval without disconnecting the ductwork. The fan housingprotrudes through the cabinet allowing adequate material forconnection of a flexible duct.

For maximum flexibility, the fan discharge can exit from theend or from the side of the unit. This can be done at the factoryor can be field converted from one to the other beforeinstallation.

Mark IV/AC control systemThe Mark IV/AC control system is a microprocessor-based

control board conveniently located in the unit control box foraccessibility. A 14 pin low voltage terminal strip provides allthe necessary terminals for field connections. LED’s are locatedin front for quick inspection. The board is 24 volt AC to thethermostat.

The Mark IV/AC control system has the following oper-atingfeatures (assumes cycle fan operation-not continuous):

� Start-up — The unit will not operate until all the inputs andsafety controls are checked for normal conditions.

The electrical components are located in the compressorsection of the unit. Holes are provided on the cabinet tofacilitate main power and low voltage control wiring throughseparate holes. All wiring connections are made internal tothe cabinet for maximum safety. Each unit is rated to accepttime delay fuses for branch circuit overcurrent protection.Single phase units are also rated for use with HACR circuitbreakers.

The control box is accessible through a panel. The controlbox houses the major operating electrical controls includingthe control circuit board, transformer, compressor relay andfan relay. Each component is accessible for service orreplacement. The low voltage circuit is protected by aresettable circuit breaker.

The unique Mark IV/AC control system is standard in allGeothermal units. Each control board receives power froma large capacity 50 VA transformer. The control board has abuilt-in terminal strip for low voltage control wiringconnections. The Mark IV/AC control board provides thebasic control functions along with numerous advancedfeatures.

Refrigeration system

The refrigeration system includes a hermetic compressor,reversing valve, water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger, thermalexpansion valve, airside coil, high/low side refrigerant accessvalves, safety controls and insulated refrigerant tubing. Thelarge panel allows for access to the compressor, reversingvalve and safety controls.

The compressor is mounted close to the access panelfor maximum serviceability and it is isolated from the bottompanel with rubber isolators. The compressor junction box isalways located toward the access panel.

The reversing valve is energized in the heating mode andwill “fail-safe” to the cooling mode which is the predominantmode of operation.

Units have a coaxial heat exchanger with a copper innertube and a steel outer tube and are designed for maximumheat transfer at normal and low water flow rates withminimum pressure drop. The air coil is a large face area coilwith copper tubes and aluminum fins. The fins are lancedand the tubes have finned edges on the inside to enhanceheat transfer capabilities.

Safety controls include low suction temperature (freeze-stat) and high pressure switches to lock out compressoroperation at extreme conditions. The safety controls can onlybe reset from the main disconnect switch and not from thewall thermostat.

Control features� Cooling mode — On a call for cooling, the compressor

and fan will start 0 to 32 seconds later. When satisfied,the compressor and fan shut off immediately.

� Heating Mode — On a call for heating, the reversing valveis energized after 60 seconds and the compressor andfan start immediately. When satisfied, the compressorand fan shut off immediately, the reversing valve is de-energized 60 seconds later to eliminate “swish” noiseand to insure that the compressor always starts up atequalized pressure.

� Short Cycle Protection & Random Start — Each timethe compressor stops, a new random compressor startdelay time between 180 and 212 seconds is generatedeach time power is applied to the unit. This preventscompressor short cycling and assures units will not startat the same time after coming back from an unoccupiedcycle.

� Unoccupied Mode — A simple “grounded” signal, nopower source required, puts the unit into the unoccupiedmode for night setback operation. The fan shuts off andthe unit is put under control from the setback bulb of thethermostat; the day heating thermostat control andcooling is locked out. A unique LED status is generatedfor indication of the unoccupied mode. On a call forheating, the fan and the compressor will start after 60seconds.

� Override Mode — A switch on the deluxe thermostatcan be activated during the unoccupied mode to put theunit back into the occupied mode for two hours for after-hours heating or cooling.

� Pump Restart — A signal from the Mark IV/AC board toour Loop Control Panel will restart the water circulatingloop pump when the compressor is energized. The signalcan be “daisy chained” between 200 units.

� Load Shed — Again, a simple grounded signal puts theunit into the load shed mode. The compressor shuts offand the fan will start on a call for heating and cooling. Aunique LED status is generated for indication of the loadshed mode.

� Brownout Protection — The Mark IV/AC board measuresthe input voltage and will suspend compressor and fanoperation if the voltage falls below 80% of the normalline voltage. A unique LED status is generated and outputis available to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

� Unit Shutdown — Again, a simple grounded signal putsthe unit into the unit shutdown mode.Compressor and fan operations are suspended. A uniqueLED status is generated and an output signal is madeavailable for connection to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

� Condensate Overflow Protection — The Mark IV/ACboard incorporates a liquid sensor at the top of the drainpan. Sensing water, cooling operation is suspended. Aunique LED status is generated and output is available toa “fault” LED at the thermostat. Heating operation is notsuspended.

� Remote Reset of Automatic Lockouts — The RemoteReset feature provides the means to remotely reset auto-matic lockouts generated by high-pressure and/or low-temperature (in heating) faults. When the Mark IV boardis in automatic lockout due to one of these faults, andthe cause of the fault condition has been alleviated, en-ergizing the O-terminal for 10 seconds or more will forcethe Mark IV board to clear the lockout. A unit power cycle

The Mark IV/AC control system allows for the followingoptional field installed controls and accessories:

� Boilerless System Kit — Eliminates the need for a boil-erin the system water loop. The boilerless system controlboardsenses the entering water temperature to the unit and locksout compressor heating operation if the water temperaturefalls below the adjustable setpoint. Contacts are providedto energize a field supplied electric heater downstream ofthe unit on a call for heating.

� Motorized Valve — Used for variable pumping appli-cations. The valve is wired in the compressor circuit andthe valve is piped in the return water line from the unit. Thevalve opens when the compressor is on and closes whenthe compressor is off. Valve is rated for 300 psig (2070 kPa).

can also be used to clear an automatic lockout if the condi-tions causing the fault have been alleviated.

� Fault Retry To Minimize Nuisance Trips — The Fault Retryfeature helps to minimize nuisance trips of automatic lock-outs caused by high-pressure and/or low-temperature (inheating) faults. This feature clears faults the first two timesthey occur within a 24-hour period and triggers an auto-matic lockout on the 3rd fault. The retry count is reset to zeroevery 24 hours.

NOTE: Most unit fault conditions are the result of operating theequipment outside the unit specifications.

� Safety Control — The Mark IV/AC board receives separateinput signals from the refrigerant high pressure switch andthe low suction temperature (freezestat) switch. If a highpressure situation occurs while in the heating mode,compressor operation is suspended. In a low temperaturesituation, the unit goes into a defrost cycle where the unit isput into cooling operation for 60 seconds until the coaxialheat exchanger is free of ice. If a low temperature situationoccurs while in the cooling mode, the low temperatureswitch will cycle unit OFF and ON, as the fault is related toair flow. Each switch generates its own unique LED statusand output is available to a “fault” LED at the thermostat ifeither situation exists.

Loop Water ControllerThe Loop Water Controller (LWC) is a stand-alone, pre-

programmed, pretested, microprocessor-based controllerproviding control of the heat rejection, heat addition stagesand the water circulating pumps for control of a water sourceheat pump system through solid-state output relays.

The controller has a keypad/display to view all statusconditions, temperatures, setpoints and monitor/alarmconditions. The display is two lines by sixteen columns in asupertwist LCD format.

The LWC can be applied to control a traditional single loopsystem; closed circuit evaporative cooler, boiler, primary pumpand standby pump; or a two-loop system with the heat pumploop having a boiler, primary pump and standby pumpseparated by a water-to-water heat exchanger to a condenserwater loop with an open cooling tower, primary (stage 1) pumpand a standby (stage 2) pump. The pumps can be operatedas “auto” or “manual” lead-lag. Pump sequencing allows thestandby pump to automatically come on upon failure of thelead pump as indicated by a flow switch.

The LWC controls heating and cooling stages from the heatpump loop supply temperature and from the outdoor airtemperature for reset of the heat addition setpoint, if desired.Other locations can be temperature monitored: heat pumploop return temperature, entering and leaving towertemperatures, entering and leaving boiler temperatures, andstorage tank temperature.

Clock schedule outputs are built-in to (1) time control theheat pump circulating pump for shutdown at night (can berestarted if outdoor air temperature falls) and (2) provideprogrammable time schedules for heat pump unit occupied/unoccupied operation. A maximum of six time clock scheduleoutputs are available.

Two LWC models are available. LWC-16 and LWC-24provide 9 and 17 configurable outputs, respectively, choosingbetween heat rejection (cooling) stages, heat addition (heating)stages and time clock schedules. Each heating and coolingoutput has individual on and off (differential) setpointadjustment capability. Modulating heating and cooling outputsignals are available to control tower bypass valve and two-way or three-way boiler heat addition valves.

Safety alarms include visual and audible notification of alow water temperature, high water temperature, or no flowcondition. Upon activation of any alarm, the LWC has contactsto send out an emergency shutdown signal. A remote alarmpanel is available for alarm notification at a remote location.

The LWC interfaces with Mark IV/AC controlled heat pumpunits for a low cost control system. The Mark IV/AC boardcan receive occupied/unoccupied time clock scheduleoutputs and an emergency shutdown signal due to an alarmcondition. The LWC can receive a signal (pump restart) fromthe Mark IV/AC board to energize and override themain circulating pump, if it is scheduled off, whenever acompressor operates from a call for night setback heat orfrom a call for heating or cooling during the two-hour overridecycle. Simple “daisy chain” wiring is required between MarkIV/AC board terminals.

Optional Monitor software allows the operator to monitorand control setpoints of the LWC at an IBM PC by directconnecting or through a phone line. Includes system graphics.

Additional features include built-in test mode to simulateall control modes, precool cycle to start heat rejection earlierfor undersized boilers, preheat cycle to start heat additionearlier for undersized towers, keypad password protection,and holiday schedules.

Engineering guide specifications

General — Contractor shall furnish and install water source heat pumps as indicated on plans. Each unit shall be ARI certifiedand CUL listed. Each unit shall be fully run tested at the factory. Each unit shall be shipped on a wooden skid and covered withcorrugated material.

Casing and cabinet — The cabinet shall be fabricated from heavy-gauge G-60 galvanized steel. The interior shall be insulatedwith 1/2" (13 mm) thick, 1 1/2 lb. (681g) coated glass fiber. Panels shall provide access to the fan compartment and the compressor/control box compartment. Unit shall have an insulated panel separating the fan compartment from the compressor compartment.Unit shall have a 1" (25 mm) thick throwaway filter and a factory installed combination filter rack/return air duct collar. The filtersshall be removable from the side or from the bottom. Unit shall have a galvanized steel painted drain pan with a drain connectionextending through the unit casing. Cabinet shall have separate holes and knockouts for entrance of line voltage and low voltagecontrol wiring. Supply and return water connections shall be copper FPT fittings and shall protrude through the cabinet forconnection to a flexible hose. Unit shall be supplied with heavy metal brackets, rubber isolators, fasteners and washers tosuspend and isolate the unit from the building structure.

Refrigerant Circuit — Units 5 tons (15000 watts) and below shall have a single sealed refrigerant circuit including a hermeticcompressor, thermal expansion valve(s), finned tube heat exchanger, reversing valve, water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger, accessvalves, safety controls, and insulated refrigerant tubing.

Compressor shall be hermetic type with external vibration or rubber mounts and thermal overload protection. The finned tubecoil shall be constructed of aluminum fins bonded to copper tubes. The heat exchanger shall be rated for 400 psig (2760 kPa) onthe water side and 450 psig (3103 kPa) on the refrigerant side.

Safety controls shall include a low suction temperature (freezestat) switch and a high refrigerant pressure switch to lock outcompressor operation. Units two tons and above shall have a low refrigerant pressure switch for loss of charge protection. A lowpressure switch shall not be permitted to replace a low suction temperature switch for freeze protection. Units shall be capableof being reset only by interrupting the power supply to the unit. Unit shall not be able to be reset from the wall thermostat.

Unit shall be capable of starting in an ambient of 40oF (5oC) with entering water at 40oF (5oC) with both air and water flow ratesat the ARI rating conditions.

Electrical — A control box shall be located within the unit and shall contain controls for compressor, reversing valve and fanmotor operation and shall have a 50 VA transformer, circuit breaker in the low voltage circuit, and a terminal block for low voltagefield wiring connections. Unit shall be nameplated to accept time delay fuses or HACR circuit breaker for branch overcurrentprotection of the power source.

Unit control system shall provide heating or cooling as required by the setpoints of the wall thermostat. The unit controlscheme shall provide for fan operation simultaneous with compressor operation (fan interlock) regardless of the thermostattype. The unit shall be capable of providing an output signal to an LED on the thermostat or to a central monitoring panel toindicate a “fault” condition from the activation of any one of the safety switches.

Fan and Motor Assembly — Units 5 tons (15000 watts) and smaller shall have a direct drive centrifugal fan. The fan housingshall have a removable orifice ring to facilitate fan motor and fan wheel removal. The fan housing shall protrude through thecabinet to facilitate field duct connection. The fan motor shall be a PSC type with integral mounting brackets isolated from thefan housing and thermal overload protection. Units above one ton shall have a terminal strip mounted on the fan motor tofacilitate motor speed change. Units shall have a straight-through or right-angle discharge air arrangement and shall be able tobe field converted from one to the other without the use of additional parts.

Mark IV/AC Control System — Unit shall have a microprocessor based control system. The unit control logic shall provideheating and cooling operation as required by the setpoints on the wall thermostat. The control system shall provide the following:

1. The use of standard mercury bulb type or programmable wall thermostats.2. Fan operation simultaneous with the compressor (fan interlock) regardless of thermostat logic.3. Time delay compressor operation.4. Delayed de-energization of the reversing valve for quiet reversing valve operation.5. Compressor short cycle protection of a minimum of three minutes before restart is possible.6. Random unit startup after coming off on unoccupied mode.7. Single grounded wire connection for activation of the unoccupied, load shed or unit shutdown modes.8. Night setback temperature setpoint input signal from the wall thermostat.9. Override signal from wall thermostat to override unoccupied mode for 2 hours.

10. Brownout protection to suspend unit operation if the supply voltage drops below 80% of normal.11. Condensate overflow protection to suspend cooling operation in an event of a full drain pan.12. Suspended compressor operation upon activation of the refrigerant pressure switch(es).13. Cooling operation activated for 60 seconds upon activation of the low suction temperature (freezestat) switch - defrost

cycle.14. Method of defeating compressor, reversing valve and fan time delays for fast service diagnostics.

15. Remote reset of automatic lockouts.

16. Heat retry to minimize nuisance trips.

Two-Inch Filter Rack — Return air duct collar and 2" (51 mm) filter rack to accept a return air duct connection and a 2"(51 mm) thick filter. The bottom bracket shall be capable of being relocated for bottom filter removal.

Pleated Filter — Pleated filter(s) for 30% efficiency.

Boilerless System KitBoilerless system kit locks out compressor heating operation if the entering water falls below the adjustable setpoint. In addition,the control shall provide a contact signal to control a field installed electric heater downstream of the heat pump unit. Anemergency heat switch shall be provided.

Field Installed Controls

■ Motorized valve relay and control valve. The assembly shall include a relay, valve and wire harness. The valve shall open whenthe compressor is on and close when the compressor is off.

■ Multiple unit control panel allows a single thermostat to control up to three units in parallel.■ Auxiliary relay controls optional devices when the fan is operating. The relay shall have SPDT contacts.
