What are 21st Century Methods and Tools?

• Discussion boards • Email, Texting, and Instant Messaging (IM)• Wikis and Blogs • Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction

1. Synchronous instruction means the student and the teachers are interacting at the same time, such as in a traditional classroom setting or an online chat room. This type of instruction is advantageous for students who need teacher guidance and feedback in order to progress in their learning.

2. Asynchronous instruction is just the opposite; the teacher and the student interact, but not at the same time. There usually is a time delay in communication between the teacher and student in asynchronous instruction. An example of this is email or snail-mail correspondence, in which a student submits an assignment and then waits for feedback. Some students thrive in a course designed with asynchronous instruction because it allows a great amount of choice, but this freedom also requires strong self -discipline to succeed.

Why do we try different methods?

• To engage e-learners

• To align with how they learn best

• To adjust per assignment

• To adjust per learning style

• To learn how this class and/or student accesses the current course design
