The Book Club held its last meeting in early December. We reviewed the books that wehave been reading recently, shared our favourite Christmas poems and with it beingChristmas we had a shared supper.Books that we had read were discussed and scored out of 10, these were:

An autobiography taking us through David Jas-on’s career via the characters he has played, particularly Del Boy. His life prior to acting, was covered in his previous book ‘My Life’ . It was commented that we often forget ac-tors are real people and that it is nice to hear something about the person behind thecharacter and several people expressed an interest in reading his earlier book. It wasclear that David devotes a great deal of time to shaping and getting into a character. His book prompted a range of scores from 4 – 9.

Newly married, newly widowed, Elsie, is sent tosee out her pregnancy at her late husband's crumbling country estate, The Bridge. Elsieonly has her husband's awkward cousin for company, and a deeply unsettling paintedwooden figure - The Silent Companion. This gothic tale generated a lot of bodies andgore and stirred a wide range of responses from members scores again ranged from 4to 9, with some thinking it would make a good film.

we shared were: ‘The Elf of Christmas Present’, ‘Politically CorrectSanta’ and ‘The Peppermint Stick’.

If you would like to join us, our next meeting is on Thursday 7th February at The ChurchHall. If you want more details of our club please contact: [email protected]

The books we are reading forthe February meeting are:▪Turning the tide on plastic byLucy Siegle▪The great believers by Rebec-ca Makkai▪The accidental wife by RowanColeman

1st Hibaldstow BrowniesWhat are Brownies?

Brownies are for girls aged between about 7 and 10 years old. Brownies are part of the Guide movement, which is the biggest youth organisation in the country. At Brownies we use games, crafts and other activities to create a fun packed programme that aims to help the development of our young girls. We try to supplement our weekly meetings with days out and trips away. Hibaldstow Brownies has been operating for many years. We meet on Monday evenings from 6:00pm – 7:30pm in Hibaldstow School. If you think you might know someone who may be interested in joining then either give me a ring or come along one Monday night.

Angela Smith - Brown Owl - 01652 654229

ARE you a retired professional with experience of ouremergency services: if so the Blue Lights Brigade wants YOU!

A FORMER police officer is the latest recruit to offer vital help to the North Lincolnshire commu-nity, after joining our unique new volunteering project. Martin Steedman, an officer for 30years - who walked the rural beat in Kirton Lindsey for eight of those - has been recruited bythe Blue Lights Brigade, (BLB). As a result, he is working with the Humberside Fire and RescueService – carrying out Safe and Well checks in the more rural areas, supporting the full timeofficers in ensuring the most vulnerable people in our society are looked after. “I get some-thing out of this and joined the team because I know I have life skills that could be used to dothings for people,” said Martin, 63. And now this vital new volunteering service is looking outfor more people like Martin. BLB was officially launched in the summer, after being awarded£77,500 funding from the national Connected Communities Innovation Fund, with a further£25,000 in match funding secured. Pioneered by former Humberside police inspector SteveLynn and his ex-colleague Steve Jones, it is the first project of its kind in Britain and was in-

spired by a desire to see retired professionals, over 50years of age, put their vast experience to use across Northand North East Lincolnshire. If you are retired and thinkyou have the relevant experience, either within the emer-gency services or with an organisation connected to them, then please call Steve on 01472 231123 or [email protected] *BLB is facilitated by VANRL, (Volun-tary Action North East Lincolnshire).

Web: www.skydiving.co.uk Facebook: ‘SkydiveHibaldstow’ Phone: 01652 648837Kris Cavell - Drop Zone Manager

We are on our way for 2019here at Skydive Hibaldstow,

some of you will have seen us taking to the skies early in Januaryand we had some more happy jumpers taking in our great viewsabove our village. Our season is really beginning to gear up and we have a recordnumber of charity’s looking to jump with us this year and we areexcited about what is to come, for those of you that are interestedin doing a skydive and think doing one to raise money for charity isfor you we have some information that might help you.Tandem skydiving provides the experience of a lifetime and is greatway to raise funds for a good cause at the same time. Plus if youraise enough sponsorship your charity jump could be for free.

It takes just 20 minutes to be briefed for your course and then youwill jump harnessed to the front of a fully BPA qualified TandemParachuting Instructor and experience the thrill of 120mph freefall. You can do a sponsored skydive on any date that we are open

There are two options when it comes to doing a sponsored skydive:

1. Most charities will allow the cost of the sky dive to be covered using up to 50% of the sponsorship money, how-ever a minimum amount of at least twice the cost of the tandem skydive should be raised.

2. You can pay for the skydive yourself, and then the minimum fundraising target is usually halved.

Although it seems you are skydiving for free, the tandem parachute jump is being paid for by the charity and thepeople supporting your cause, so you should try to raise as much as possible over the minimum target. It is also im-portant that you contact your chosen charity and agree the use of funds and the minimum sponsorship requiredwith them directly.

Skydive Hibaldstow has links to several local charities with whom we already have agreements however we under-stand that you might want to choose a charity close to your heart. You are welcome to skydive for any charitablecause but you do need to agree the use of funds with them directly.

By booking directly with the dropzone and not through an agency all the funds raised only go two ways – to coverthe cost of your charity tandem skydive and to the charity itself.

Talk to us and we will walk you through the fundraising process and what you need to do

So if that has got you thinking and made you decide you want to represent a charity close to your heart please getin contact on the details below and we will be happy to help you, alternatively if you just want that perfect gift forsomeone on a special occasion we would be more then happy to help you also.

For any enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us on 01652 648837, [email protected] or via our websitewww.skydiving.co.uk

HIBALDSTOW W.I.Update from Ena Fish .

What a thoroughly enjoyable evening we had at our Decembermeeting when it was the WI Christmas Social. Brilliant entertain-

It was lovely to see very young and mature singers joining us for a well deserved supper asthey had entertained us with songs old and new, many written years ago are still relevanttoday. The evening concluded with traditional Christmas songs.

Our next meeting is an evening meal at The Shires.

Next meetings:Tuesday, 4th February: Gail Spavin – A woman setting up in a man’s world.Competition – largest number of items beginning with ‘p’ which fit into a small jar (whichwill be provided)Tuesday 5th March : Annual General Meeting

February 2019 Articleby Reverend David Eames

I suspect that not many people will remember theirbaptism. I was baptised at the age of 16 so I doremember mine – it was a full immersion baptism in a

pool that had been erected in the church for that occasion but the water was cold as theheater hadn't worked! I remember how great it was to be able to affirm my faithpublicly in front of my Christian family. Those who are baptised as infants don't get the chance to affirm their faith forthemselves at their baptism, but that is why we have godparents. In the baptismservice the Godparents not only declare that they believe the Christian faith themselvesand that they will bring the child up as a Christian (by praying for them, being anexample to them and bringing them along to church), but they also declare the faith onbehalf of the child. They answer for themselves and for the child. In one version ofthe baptism service the minister says “At baptism we promise to reject the devil and allevil, constantly to believe God's Word, and to obey his commands. Children shouldmake their own response of faith and obedience towards God, but as this child is atpresent too young to answer for himself it is proper that this commitment be made inhis name until he is old enough to take it upon himself.” The role of the godparent is tobring the child up in the Christian faith so that the child is able to affirm their faithpublicly, usually in the presence of a bishop at the Confirmation service.

It is sometimes said that children should be free to choose the faith for themselves andit is true that no-one is a Christian unless they decide for themselves to repent and tobelieve and trust in Jesus as their Lord. However, infant baptism reminds us that Jesusinvited children to be brought to him for a blessing and rebuked those who keep themfrom him. But it also reminds us that a child is not 'done' when they've been baptised, rather it marks the start of their Christian journey where they will be guided and taughtthe faith by their parents and godparents, in the hope that one day they will choose itfor themselves. They cannot of course choose it if they have not been taught it!Lent is a season of reflection in the Church year and those reflections sometimes centrearound our identity as baptised Christians. One of the prayers in our baptism serviceasks for God's help to “keep us faithful to our baptism” This involves three things: first, repenting of the things we do wrong; secondly, believing all that the Bible teaches aboutthe doctrines of the Christian faith; and thirdly, keeping God's holy will andcommandments all the days of our life.

At your baptism, your godparents prayed that Jesus would receive you, forgive you, sanctify you with the Holy Spirit, and make you an heir to heaven and eternal life. Theyalso heard that Jesus promised all these things in his gospel and we know that he keepshis promises. You started your Christian journey then, perhaps you need to restart thatjourney now, and if so you're always welcome at church – you are a member of ourfamily after all!!

Local offi-cials were present to mark the event and refreshments were provided to the children inattendance. This is your park and the Parish Council ask that those in the vicinity of the park report anymisdemeanours to the police and inform a member of the Parish Council. Please look after this area! It is your money that is maintaining the area so make sure itis used correctly!

A letter received by the Village Voice on this matter

Dear Residents of Hibaldstow

I wrote to the voice a few months ago and the problem I would like to address is still hap-pening so I thought I would try again.

I wish to remind people that dogs are not allowed in the park as it says on the gate. I haveseen people walking dogs on and off leads through there and unless there’s some time ruleabout it this is clearly wrong.

They make it dirty for children going in and they can be very intimidating to some people. Iused to feel safe in the park but now I feel too scared to take my daughter there. When toldthat dogs shouldn’t be there some owners become aggressive which is definitely not calledfor. Dogs are allowed all over the village, why should they take over the park as well?

While I’m on the subject of the park I should mention the litter. I know it is a widespreadproblem but again it looks dirty and like no one cares about our public spaces.

Perhaps someone could check with the parish council if the sign on the gate still stands. If itdoesn’t I’m obviously wrong and you shouldn’t print this but if it does people should havesome respect.

Kind regards
