Introducing Hi-O® Technology
In the 21st century, the world has not become a safer place and as the demand for security solutions is constantly increasing. Information technology is responding by developing electronic security solutions.
The demand for robust and sophisticated hardware like electromechanical locks is not decreasing. On the contrary trends show an increased convergence between IT networks, security software and electromechanical hardware, such as locks, door openers, strikes and emergency solutions.
As security professionals seek better ways to manage door openings, ASSA ABLOY Australia offers Hi-O (Highly intelligent Opening). Hi-O is a new standardised technology for control and security of door opening solutions. It enables detailed door monitoring, real time diagnostics and sharing of opening information. Hi-O offers easier installations and troubleshooting, and extended life of the components – bringing peace of mind for the building owner.
An electromechanical lock could be equipped with sensors to identify when the performance of the of motor is degrading. The need for maintenance could then be reported via a LAN to trigger an SMS or email to a maintenance technician with detailed service information.
Hi-O technology is based on CAN (Controller Area Network), a well proven and reliable standard that is used in most new cars today and many other industrial and consumer products.
All devices equipped with Hi-O technology communicate over a single 4 wire CANBUS that has two wires for data and two wires for power – this creates a plug and play system that greatly reduces installation time, cost and complexity.
Hi-O Basics• Standardised communication platform
developed by ASSA ABLOY for electromechanical devices – designed to simplify installation, service and upgrade
• Provides intelligence and communication protocol to door components
• Firmware running on micro controller in each electromechanical device
• All devices connected with 4 wires. 2 for data and 2 for power
• Based on CAN Open standard – used for many years in the car industry that allows connected devices to exchange and share encrypted information
3
Benefits and Capabilities
Hi-O Technology: Simplified Installation and Maintenance Enhanced Functionality and SecurityWith Hi-O, all electromechanical devices have embedded intelligence for sharing encrypted information. Each device communicates its status and capabilities to the other devices, so the opening operates efficiently at all times.
• Installations are faster and require virtually no troubleshooting
• Standardised way to connect all devices – 4 wires
• Plug and play – automatic configuration with report generation
• Access control and door monitoring information pinpoint what’s happening at the door opening
• Components detect tampering and operate accordingly to preserve security and functionality
• Advanced diagnostics - maintenance becomes predictive instead of reactive
• Encryption over the Hi-O network
For Security Consultants, Architects, Integrators and Project PlannersWith it’s built in intelligence, plug and play connectors, and ability to work with third party enterprise software, Hi-O is easy to specify and integrate into any building. Remote diagnostic capabilities streamline servicing and increase security.
For Building Owners and Facility ManagersThe plug and play Hi-O system is easy to install and maintain, meaning less disruption at the site. Future upgrading of components will be simple because components use embedded intelligence for automatic configuration onto the network. Hi-O enables easier and more precise monitoring of what’s occurring at the opening.
For Locksmiths and InstallersPlug and play Hi-O components wired with standardised Molex connectors ensure only correct connections can be established. Automatic configuration immediately activates the system and diagnostics identify devices needing adjustment, making Hi-O easy to install and initiate.

Installation and ConfigurationEach individual door is its own Hi-O network in which electromechanical devices are typically connected in a daisy chain configuration, by simple method of cables and connectors. This connection between devices creates the CANBUS that enables communication between the devices.
From the door, there is only one four wire cable – two wires for power and two wires for data. This CANBUS is designed to connect directly to a third party door access controller, that then converts signals from the CANBUS into existing protocols used today – e.g. RS485
Hi-O compatible product will operate with default configuration as soon as power is applied. There is no need to make any settings, it all works right out of the box. In order to configure a Hi-O compatible system to specific needs, the Hi-O Manager tool is used. Hi-O Manager is a PC based application that allows modification of Hi-O device parameters and system behaviour. This is generally connected via an access point somewhere on the CANBUS through simple connectors.

Hi-O Technology – Installation
The Intelligent door – a typical door installationHi-O Installations are designed to be fast and accurate with minimal termination of wiring required on site. A series of pre wired connectors, cables and plugs are available for various applications, depending on the devices required (see page 20). All devices use standard Molex connectors.
Using these connectors each device is simply plugged in, and then in a daisy chain configuration it is plugged into the next device. Once all devices are connected there is one four wire cable to terminate at the top of the door. In many cases this can be simply plugged into the Hi-O gateway or door access controller.
Every Hi-O device has only four wires:
• Red wire: positive
• Black wire: negative
• White wire: CAN Data High (CAN_H)
• Brown wire: CAN Data Low (CAN_L)
