sGreetings to all of you from all of us in the College of HHP. There is much positive news to report despite the challenging economic times for the state of North Carolina. We have much to be thankful for and we have much to share with you.

We are very thankful to the many alumni and friends that have stepped up their support for HHP during these challenging times. Especially noteworthy is the pledge by Jerry McGee to support our first HHP endowed Professorship but all of our Advancement Council members, under the leadership of Michael Bunting, have been good to us. Michael turns over the leadership to Jim Post, who will find it challenging to match the very spirited leadership of Michael Bunting. However you will quickly find that Jim shares Michael’s passion for ECU and HHP.

A special thanks to Sharon Knight, who served as interim Chair of HEP for two years and thanks to Tim Kelley who has taken over that role. Sharon continues to be a major asset to the college and has been awarded a great opportunity to work with the National Institute of Medicine on a significant research project that will take her to six countries.

The faculty of HHP continue to excel in recognition through receipt of major university awards. Tom Raedeke from the Department of Exercise & Sport Studies received the most prestigious UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and was also asked to address the entire campus faculty at the fall convocation. Two other faculty members Kindal Shores

and Wendy Whisner both from the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, received the ECU Alumni Association Award for excellence in teaching. You hopefully noticed that ECU received the national Freedom Award and it was my pleasure to accompany Chancellor Ballard and Steve Duncan to Washington D.C. for the ceremony. We are proud of the role that our ROTC units and Wounded Warriors program played in bringing this recognition to ECU.

Thank you for your continued interest in ECU and HHP. As you can see, we are continuing with a hard copy of this Newsletter due to the low readership of our attempts at only electronic versions but are supplementing this approach with electronic updates and links. You need to be certain we have a good email address for you if you want to receive these more timely updates. We plan to move to an electronic only sometime in the future but remain committed to reaching as many of our alumni and friends as possible.

the Berlin Wall. He began his career in 1983 as a Youth Center Director at Homestead Air Force Base in Florida and later assumed the same role at the Upper Heyford Air Force Based in England. In the years since, he has served as the Chief of Recreation Services in the Netherlands and Chief of Morale, Welfare & Recreation in Maine. Presently, a Command Recreation Specialist at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, John provides oversight for 15 Air Force base recreation programs. He oversees budgets and monitors their operations to ensure federal laws and Air Force regulations are followed.

The Israels, who reside in Norfolk, Virginia, enjoy spending their free time at ECU events and have remained active in support of their alma mater. John recently joined the HHP Dean’s Advancement Council whose members provide dedicated, volunteer action and advocacy to further the College’s goals. “We are very excited to have John serve as a Council member. He brings to the board a wealth of experience and a global perspective that will serve to further enhance our diverse and dedicated team of advisors,” said Dr. Glen Gilbert, Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance.

John and Arminda have established a bequest provision through their will that designates ECU as the sole benefactor of their estate. This provision will support student scholarships in multiple areas at ECU including HHP. This commitment represents the largest planned gift in the history of HHP. The significant support and efforts of this family continue to promote and strengthen the College.

HHP Advising Center Most of you may remember when you stood in line for hours waiting to register for a class, or having a hard time working out a time to meet with your advisor. Over the past couple of years, the registration process has become more streamlined and so has the advising experience. What was once a task held by the faculty has now become specialized with professional advisors. The College of Health and Human Performance academic advising center works with all intended undergraduate majors for the college and prepares them for the process of declaring their major.

At its inception, the Advising Center assisted 194 students. Today the Advising Center assists nearly 1,400 students. Due to the growth of the college, the Advising Center was moved from Minges to the newly refurbished Belk Annex. The Advising Center also houses a resource room with computers and pertinent information about majors, graduate programs, and campus resources, as well as ample meeting space for group advising, training sessions, and the like. The HHP Advising Center was one of the first advising centers to move from paper to electronic folders. Student folders are housed on servers and this has made a huge impact in the amount of paper saved as well as cutting down on file management resources. We look forward to continued growth and successful service to our students.

Dr. Stacey AltmanChair, Department of

Exercise and Sport Science

It is my pleasure to bring you kind greetings from the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. This past year provided us with opportunities to connect with many of our alumni and friends. We enjoyed those interactions and

appreciate your involvement in our activities. We are committed to reaching even more this year. In addition to continuing to celebrate our past with you, we look forward embracing an exciting future as well. New additions to the faculty (including Dr. Jeff Brault, Dr. Lucas Carr, Ms. Julie Cox, Ms. Karen Walter, Dr. Stacy Warner, and Dr. Carol Witczak will boost that future by enhancing the department’s reputation for quality instruction, research productivity, and meaningful community outreach. We invite you to visit our webpage to get to know these faculty members better.

Anyone that has been a “Pirate” knows that ECU is a dynamic and ever-evolving environment. Our department is no exception. Below are a few announcements about some recent changes. I hope that you will congratulate these individuals should you have the opportunity.

• Dr.JimDecker, wasappointedAssociateDean for HHP. As many of you know, Dr. Decker served as the EXSS Graduate Studies Director for several years (so many years, in fact, that his file cabinets have a storage space of their own now). He will be missed in that role, but he will remain very involved in department activities.

• Dr.MattMaharwillserveastheEXSSGraduate Studies Director. Dr. Mahar comes to the role with experience as a Graduate Concentration Coordinator for the Physical Activity Promotion Master’s Degree Concentration and strong desire to contribute to the department’s development of leadership capacity in graduate students.

• Dr.TimGavinhasjoinedthedepartment’sleadership team and will assist with assessment, strategic planning, and outreach efforts. Dr. Gavin’s training in business and data analysis and his experience as the Exercise Physiology Concentration Coordinator will be important in advancing the position of the department as we continue to strive for the best national rankings.

• Dr.BoniBoswell,Co-DirectoroftheDevelopmental Motor Lab, was appointed as the Director of the department’s DanceAbility Program. The DanceAbility Program will provide an inclusive

Department Chair Updatesenvironment for students, faculty and friends of ECU to observe and participate in dance activities that shatter misperceptions and limitations related to participation in physical activity.

• ConcentrationCoordinatorsandProgramDirectors: Dr. Scott Gordon will serve as Exercise Physiology Concentration Coordinator, Dr. Dana Espinosa will serve as Physical Education Graduate Degree Director, and Mr. Mike Dawson will serve as Program Director for the undergraduate Physical Education degree.

In our case, change and growth seem to be indicators of the health of the department. There are many things to discover about the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at http://www.ecu.edu/exss and on Facebook.

It was a very successful summer for the ECU Air Force ROTC program. Thirteen cadets were sent to Field Training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Mississippi. One cadet earned Superior Performer honors (top 20%) and four return as Distinguished Graduates (top 10%). We commissioned 3 cadets in May and 3 more in August bringing our total number of cadets commissioned since 1952 to 1,161. In July we welcomed Lt. Daniel Bair to Aerospace Studies. He will be our Unit Admissions Officer. Sadly, we are saying goodbye to TSgt. William Ballance who was selected for a position at the White House Military Office. This fall we welcomed our largest class in many years with 117 cadets.

The ECU Army ROTC program had a busy and successful summer. We sent 26 rising seniors to Fort Lewis, Washington to attend the Leadership Development and Accessions Course (LDAC) where they trained and competed with over 5,000 Senior ROTC Cadets from across the nation. The Pirate Cadets performed exceptionally well, as always, achieving the highest physical fitness average of the 39 ROTC programs from the mid-Atlantic region. Cadet Patricia Marrero, the current Pirate Battalion commander, received the AUSA Leadership Excellence Award, Bank of America Coin, and the COMTeK Leadership Award in recognition for being selected as the top Cadet in her regiment. Four other seniors received LDAC’s highest leadership evaluation scores and six received the coveted “RECONDO” award for superior physical fitness and military skills competence. The underclass Cadets were no less busy as they scattered across the nation and throughout the world participating in Cadet Command’s Cultural Understanding and Language Program (CULP), Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT), Cadet Field Training (CFT), and other military professional development programs. We sent thirteen Army ROTC Cadets to basic training, six to Air Assault School, five to Airborne School, four on CULP trips, and two to CFT. To prepare our next group of warriors for similar challenges, the Department of Military Science welcomed Captain Sarah Day and Sergeant First Class Twondell Baylor who will help take our program to new heights.

Outstanding Researcher Award. Please refer to additional information concerning this award on page 6.

The HE&P Athletic Training Program (ATEP), in partnership with Pitt County Schools, has placed a graduate student certified athletic trainer at each of the six County high schools. We are already receiving reports on their success and smooth transition into these positions. Athletic Training will also be presenting at the National Outreach Scholarship Conference in October with Pitt County Athletic Director Mr. Ron Butler representing Pitt County. These and other partnerships reflect the ATEP’s proactive spirit of ECU engagement in our community.

A number of HE&P faculty are currently working on externally-funded research projects, including Dr. Sloane Burke (Association for Prevention Teaching and Research), Dr. Jennifer Cremeens (U.S. Department of Education), Dr. Charles Humphrey (Centers for Disease Control), and others.

Dr. Rick Barnes is currently participating in phased retirement, but continues to make significant contributions to the department for the MA/MAEd degrees as Acting Program Director, as well as in many other areas.

Dr. Alice Anderson has taken on the role of Interim Program Director of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) in addition to serving in her role as Graduate Director. Former Environmental Health Sciences Director Dr. Dan Sprau participated in a “Semester at Sea” along with his wife and children cruising the world during spring, 2010.

The Health Education Program continues to consider changes to the curriculum to reflect an increased focus on public health. Drs. Sloane Burke and Michael Felts are serving as co-directors of the undergraduate degree program in Health Education.

We hope to hear from you concerning your own professional career and invite you to visit us to share your experiences with our faculty and students. Also visit us at http://www.ecu.edu/hlth

EXSS 1000 and HLTH 1000 Students Give Back

On September 30th the EXSS 1000 and HLTH 1000 programs sponsored and coordinated a Blood Donation Challenge. That same morning, the remnants of tropical storm Nicole caused local flooding that resulted in the university remaining closed until 11:00 a.m. Although the blood drive started out slow, our students came through in the end. We collected 384 units, just short of our goal of 400 units. It was amazing to see the students brave the elements to help others. For the past several years, the students from EXSS 1000 and HLTH 1000 have had a friendly competition to recruit the most student blood donors for this event. Bragging rights this semester goes to HLTH 1000, but the real winners are the many people who will receive the “gift of life” because of the students’ generosity and caring. As part of their HLTH 1000 mental health curriculum, students learn that when you reach out and help someone else, you receive positive feelings that boost self-esteem. It is the hope of the faculty that these students will become lifelong donors and doers.

Decker Named AssociateDean of HHPDr. Jim Decker has been named an associate dean in the College of Health and Human Performance. Decker, associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, has served as interim associate dean since 2008. He will provide administrative leadership, oversight, and coordination of the graduate programs in the college. Decker is a nationally certified adapted physical educator and has presented in Germany and Korea. Since joining ECU in 1990, Decker has directed the adapted physical education program. He is a long time adapted sports coach and official having contributed in many local, state, and international Special Olympics. In 2007, ECU named him the recipient of the prestigious Centennial Award for Excellence in Service and in 2006 formally acknowledged his campus leadership by selecting him as one of its 99 leaders. He earned both an undergraduate and graduate degree from The State University of New York College at Brockport. He received his doctoral degree in Adapted Physical Education from The Ohio State University.

In Memory of Rod Compton - No Quarter FlagMr. Michael Bunting, chair of the HHP Advancement Council, was instrumental in facilitating the recognition of Mr. Rod Compton at the September 5, 2010 home football game. Athletic Director, Terry Holland, presented a plaque to Rod’s family in memory of his passion and love for the Pirates, which led to the development of the “No Quarter” f lag raising tradition in 2007. Ms. Carol-Ann Tucker, retired HHP faculty, welcomed Rod’s sister, Barbara Maier and her husband John. Rod was a long-time faculty member and former director of sports medicine. His service to ECU spanned from 1970 to the time of his passing in February, 2010.

Grant to Help Boost Tourism Plan in Rural Communities The North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, Inc. has awarded a grant of more than $73,000 to Dr. Paige Schneider, assistant professor, Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies and affiliate faculty, Center for Sustainable Tourism, and Mr. David Hodges, Mid-East Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. This initiative will assist 11 towns in the Roanoke River Valley region to join resources in an effort to bring greater economic impact to the region. Schneider said, “We will conduct an inventory of attractions, analyze market demands and competitiveness, and investigate socio-cultural and natural resource issues.” The project will help community leaders identify their tourism resources, services, and infrastructure. In addition to meeting with the Roanoke River Mayors Association to identify key stakeholders, the project also involves holding public meetings, conducting focus groups, and filming on location. These towns will receive access to promotional videos that will help market their natural and cultural heritage. Results of the project will guide the region in future planning for development and tourism ventures and initiatives that can create needed jobs and income opportunities, while contributing to environmental conservation.

Positive Health LeadershipPositive health and salutogenesis is the focus of Dr. Craig Becker’s work in the Department of Health Education and Promotion. Positive health relates to the presence of physical, mental and social well-being. Salutogenesis is a study of health that determines the causes or origins of health and seeks to determine how health is created. Salutogenesis provides a framework to develop professional and personal practices that lead to positive health outcomes. To provide health professionals with complementary salutogenic skills for health, Dr. Becker provides Positive Health Leadership training available through a preconference at the National Wellness Conference and through Continuing Studies at East Carolina University. You can learn more about his fall training at ECU here: http://cpeprograms.ecu.edu/wconnect/CourseStatus.awp?~~1P0HLFALL

HHP StudentsAre LifesaversDavid Mwangi, health education and promotion major and Andrew Langlois, health fitness specialist major, performed CPR on a man that collapsed near Mendenhall Student Center on September 14, 2010. They continued to perform CPR for an estimated three minutes. Once Emergency Medical Services arrived, the patient had a pulse and did not need the automatic external defibrillator. Information received later indicated the man had a heart attack. Lieutenant Jason Sugg of the ECU Police Department was also at the scene and said, “In my opinion, if the patient had collapsed elsewhere, near untrained people, the outcome would have been different. Mr. Mwangi and Mr. Langlois saved that man’s life.” David is currently enrolled in Mr. Andrew Pickett’s CPR/First Aid Class.

Faculty Awards and Honors

Dr. Thomas D. Raedeke, associate professor, in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science was named the East Carolina University recipient of the prestigious 2010 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award recognizes a tenured faculty member with a sustained record of distinguished teaching and carries a $7,500 cash prize. Raedeke shares his passion by helping students make meaningful connections to the course material. He continuously strives to ensure that students realize the relationship of the subject matter in their own lives so they learn and link the material to their own experiences and future goals. After joining ECU in 1998, Raedeke quickly established a reputation as an excellent teacher and enrollment in his courses increased.

Ms. Jennifer Abbott, academic advisor, was recognized as a 2010 Servire Society Inductee. Recipients of this honor demonstrate a commitment to provide a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service to the community per year. Abbott volunteered over 300 hours, almost an hour a day, as a member of the Greenville Junior Chamber of Commerce, also known as the Greenville Jaycees.

Ms. Wendy Whisner, teaching instructor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies received the 2010 university-wide Alumni Association Award. She believes that teaching is about exposing the mysteries, dissolving the fear, and empowering students to explore what lies beneath. She is known for creating a student-centered environment that is conducive to personal discovery and self-awareness. Whisner makes significant efforts to connect with students by sharing her energy and humor, as well as showing true interest in their lives.

Dr. Kindal Shores, assistant professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, was honored with two teaching awards in 2009-2010. Shores represented the College of HHP as the Scholar-Teacher and joined Ms. Wendy Whisner as a university-wide Alumni Association Award winner. She credits her teaching success to her broad view of teaching. She believes that the most successful and intentional learning occurs during engagement in research and service. Thus, she works hard to share her enthusiasm and engage undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarship.

Dr. David A. Birch, professor in the Department of Health Education and Promotion Department, received the 2010 Outstanding Researcher Award from the American School Health Association. His research has focused on leadership and professional preparation, middle school students’ perceptions of health issues, and parent and family involvement in school health.

Alumnus Receives LifetimeContribution AwardRonnie Barnes, a 1975 College of Health and Human Performance alumni, received the 2010 Lifetime Contribution Award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Research & Education Foundation. Vice President for Medical Affairs and Head Athletic Trainer for the New York Giants, Barnes received the honor at the NATA Foundation donor reception held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 23rd. The award recognizes his exemplary contributions toward the advancement and growth of the foundation.

Barnes is also known for his long history of giving back to his alma mater. His recent gift of $10,000 was instrumental in the establishment of a scholarship to honor the memory of Mr. Rod Compton, a longtime faculty member in the Department of Health Education and Promotion and former director of sports medicine for the Athletics Department.
