The lens of the eye is normally crystal clear. But damage to the proteins in the lens can cause it to become cloudy and opaque. !e result is a cataract. Cataracts are the leading cause of impaired

vision in the United States, a"ecting more than #ve million people today. !is number is sure to increase dramatically with the aging baby-boomer population, as most people over the age of sixty have some degree of cataract formation. !ere are many factors that can contribute to or cause cataracts: eye disease or injury, diseases such as diabetes, mellitus, and exposure to toxins and ultraviolet light. Heavy metals, such as cadmium, can cause damage to eye tissues and can prevent antioxidants such as zinc from binding to enzymes. Cigarette smoke is a leading source of cadmium. In many cases, cataracts are simply part of the aging process, the result of years of cumulative free-radical damage.

Many cataracts can be repaired through surgical replacement with an arti#cial lens. But the best strategy is to prevent cataracts from forming in the #rst place by tuning up the body’s defense mechanisms. !e sooner you begin, the better the results. Once a cataract forms, dietary and nutritional strategies can’t eliminate the problem, but they can help to slow down the rate at which it progresses. You can reduce free-radical formation by avoiding fatty foods, especially fried foods. High salt intake is also associated with cataracts. In contrast, a diet rich in vegetables, fruit, calcium, folic acid, and vitamin E provides nutrients that protect against cataracts. To quench free radicals that do crop up, the tissues in your eye need adequate levels of key antioxidants. !e higher your levels of these substances, the lower your risk of cataracts.

Vitamin C supplementation can halt the progression of cataracts and may improve vision. In one study, 450 patients with cataracts were placed on a nutritional program that included 1,000 mg of vitamin C per day, resulting in a signi#cant reduction in cataract development. !ough similar patients had previously required surgery within four years, in the patients treated with vitamin C only a small handful required surgery, and in most patients there was no evidence that the cataract progressed over the eleven-year period of the study. !e lenses of the eye require much higher concentrations of vitamin C than those found in the blood - at least twenty times more - and by keeping blood vitamin C levels elevated, you make it easier for the body to concentrate vitamin C into the lens. Studies of patients going in for cataract surgery showed that dosages of at least 1,000 mg per day were required to increase the concentration of vitamin C in the lens of the eye.

!ere are some other important factors for preventing cataracts that you might wish to consider too. Glutathione peroxidase is an enzyme that is normally found in high concentrations in the lens. It neutralizes hydrogen peroxide, a free radical found in the $uid of the eye. People with cataracts typically lack su%cient glutathione peroxidase and have hydrogen peroxide levels up to twenty-#ve times higher than normal. You can boost your

glutathione peroxidase supply by making sure you get enough selenium and vitamin E. these nutrients work together as an antioxidant team to neutralize hydrogen peroxide. Flavonoid-rich extracts is also an excellent antioxidant protection for the lenses. Among the best are $avonoid-rich extracts from bilberry, grape seed, and Ginkgo biloba. One recent study found that bilberry extract plus vitamin E stopped the progression of cataracts in forty-eight out of #&y patients.

Dear Health & Fitness Magazine,

Approximately 30-50% of all my new patients became aware of my services through my ads in Health & Fitness Magazine. !is has been a fairly consistent pattern since I began advertising with you around 13 years ago. If I were to count all the referrals from these new patients I would say that Health & Fitness Magazine has been responsible for helping me build 50% of my patient base. In all my years of practice no advertising has ever

come close to these statistics. What is great about most of the patients that have heard about me from Health & Fitness Magazine is that they are truly interested in improving their health. !ey tend to refer other people who are also interested in health and #tness. I would highly recommend any health-related business to advertise with Health & Fitness Magazine – it’s well distributed throughoutSacramento & targets only people who are truly interested in improving their health. !ank you, Health & Fitness Magazine for helping me reach Sacramento residents that are in need of my services. Sincerely, Brett A. Gottlieb, D.C.

!is month one of our themes is vision; and it’s one appropriate for the beginning of the New Year. What will you do di"erently this year? Will you spend quiet time alone or in meditation/prayer? Will you be with friends and family more o&en? Will you be in a new location meeting new people, making friends for the future?

One of the best things about life is that we can always change things that we don’t like. Make the best of this principle as you start 2011. Leave the resentments of 2010 back there in the past or better yet – incinerate them in your mind. !ey’re gone forever! If you have been challenged in this area, seek the help of a minister/rabbi, psychologist, psychiatrist, hypnotherapist, body worker, or talk it out with your pets.

!is month’s issue will also give you some new ideas on winter sports, some new answers for health issues of you and your dog, and a new recipe for squash. Have a great New Year!

Stay healthy, wise and warm!

Unexplained pain can be frustrating for anyone. You go to

the medical doctor only to leave with no answers. !ey tell you that everyone is #ne. However, you know that everything is not #ne because your body is screaming at you that something is wrong.

Pain is the body’s way of warning you that things are not okay. What are you to do when medicine has no answers for you? Most people at this point will go outside the medical profession for an answer. Sometimes the answer is acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, and nutrition. However, what if you tried these things and are still in pain? Well, then you could be su"ering from what is known as the Atlas Subluxation Complex (ASC).

!e ASC is a misalignment of atlas vertebrae and the skull. !e skull sits on top of the atlas. !e hole at the bottom of the skull must line up perfectly with

the hole at the top of the spine, which is formed by the atlas. If the atlas has misaligned then these holes will be o"set. Since the brainstem and spinal cord are located where the skull joins the atlas in the upper neck, any misalignment in this area can pinch, kink, or traction these nerve tissues. Trillions of nerves run through this area on their way from the brain to all parts of the body. Any traction, compression, and kinking, even if very slight, can change the conductivity of hundreds of thousands of these nerve #bers very easily. !e longer this misalignment in the upper neck exists the more nerve #bers will be a"ected. Eventually pain will start to occur when the nervous system can no longer adapt to the altered nerve $ow. Blood $ow can be changed as well because the nervous system controls the $ow of blood. !e ASC blocks the nerve and blood $ow to the body much like if you were to put a kink in a garden hose. !e end result is chronic pain.

Most medical doctors are not trained to make this diagnosis. If you are su"ering from ASC, all your tests will come out as normal. !e doctors will dismiss the pain as “all in your head”. !en they will give you an anti-depressant medication or send you to a pain management center. All they do at the pain management center is teach you how to learn to live with your pain. If you think your pain or health problem has a real cause, you owe it to yourself

Most everyone that is su"ering from neck or back pain has heard of

non-surgical spinal decompression which many chiropractors have available in their o$ces.

!is technique has allowed many people to avoid surgery for conditions known as disc herniation and spinal stenosis. One reason people with neck or back pain might seek out spinal decompression is because it is less risky than having surgery. However, the one downside of non-surgical spinal decompression is the cost. Unfortunately, insurance companies will not pay for this treatment by chiropractors. Costs can run $150-$200 per visit. !e number of visits can range

from 12-24 and cost thousands of dollars. !is has made many people think twice about having this treatment. I would like to tell you about a similar treatment that is much cheaper but achieves the same great results.

!ere is a hand-held device called a Vertebral Distraction Pump (VDP), which does the same thing as the expensive spinal decompression machines. !is treatment is much more a"ordable for the average person. !e cost of this treatment in my o$ce, for example, is only $50 per visit.

ARE YOU IN PAIN BUT DON’T KNOW WHY? WELL, THE ANSWER MAY BE SIMPLER THAN YOU THINK.

Q: HELP ME RONDA!For several years I have been reacting to particular comments made by a certain co-worker. It is not like me to react so strongly by swearing at the person. Could someone put me in trance without me knowing and cause me to behave inappropriately? - Controlled Callie

A: Dear Controlled Callie,First it is important to understand what trance is and what it is not. A

trance is paying attention to something which is important to you at that time, often blocking out all outer stimulus around you. The depth of the trance is associated with whether you feel in control or not.

Humans are in trance a lot of the time. For example, the most common trance is the driving trance where you arrive at your destination and you do not remember part of the journey. This state is a trance state where your unconscious mind is driving the car and your conscious mind checked out. Although it may be a little scary the first few times it happens, it is very common after you have driven a car for a period of time. The behavior of driving has become automatic, therefore unconscious, and you being to think of other things.

In trance or out of trance, no one can cause you to behave inappropriately; however, you may be reacting without conscious thought. Your reaction to the comment of your co-worker is called a conditioned response and thereby you become less than resourceful in that moment and your behavior is swearing. NLP is designed to help with changing unwanted reactions and/or behaviors, thereby helping you be more resourceful in these situations.

Q: HELP ME RONDA!Every time I call my doctor’s o!ce the receptionist is abrupt and I feel I am not being valued as a patient. I really like my doctor but have a hard time dealing with the lack of patient/customer service when I call the o!ce for an appointment. How do you get beyond the cranky receptionist?- Patient Paige A: Dear Patient Paige,Since we never know what is going on in another person’s world that may be causing their cranky behavior, let us consider a different approach that may be useful in this situation.

To get beyond the cranky receptionist, keep in mind this person may not be happy in life and may not be feeling valued in their job.

The most powerful way to build instant rapport with a person who is demonstrating lack of customer service is to acknowledge they are having a bad day. This same acknowledgment works for the cranky customer, too.

Suddenly, simple comments acknowledging they are having a bad day will result in them being nice to you. Not feeling valued is one of the biggest issues in the work place today.

Q: HELP ME, RONDA!With the holiday season in full swing, I "nd myself getting very #ustrated in the long lines at the stores at the checkout counters. It seems I always get in the lines where the person on cash is just being trained, or if I am in the express lane the person in #ont of me has more items than noted for the lane. I can feel my pressure rising and I just want to scream. How can I enjoy the holiday season when I leave the store upset? - Frustrated FranA: DEAR FRUSTRATED FRAN,As there is no solution to long lines during the holiday sea-son, and we cannot change how a company trains their new cashiers or make others adhere to the express lane numbers, you may want to consider how you can make this time of year more enjoyable to you.

Perhaps taking this extra time to spread some good will and cheer will lighten your frustration and put you in a better state when you leave the store. If the customers in the line with you are not in the jolly mood, there are always plenty of magazines to browse through while you are waiting your turn.

Q: HELP ME RONDA!Recently my sister and I had a disagreement and she told me she would never speak to me again. !e problem is whenever we are together at a family gathering my brother talks to her and doesn’t include me in the con"ersation. He knows the situation between us and I feel he should only talk to me when I’m around. Wouldn’t this teach her a lesson to be nice to me? - Hurt Sister

A: Dear Hurt Sister, When you set expectations on how another person ‘should’ act in a situation, you set yourself up for a life of disappointments. Wanting your brother to punish your sister so she will be nice to you is asking him to behave like her. You may want to consider how your expectations can create a wedge between you and your brother. Focus on how you may be able to resolve the issue with your sister and drop the expectations of others fighting your battles for you. If your sister wants a relationship with you, she will respond more favorably if you are the one to approach her wanting to reconcile. Keep in mind that difficult situations bring with them the opportunity to learn from the experience and grow as a person.

5) IF MANAGED PROPERLY BEINGDIABETIC CAN ACTUALLY IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH.

!is is one of those, get out what you put in, situations but I honestly believe being diabetic for the past 13 years has actually improved my overall health. Because of diabetes I exercise more, eat better, and drink less. I do know a few diabetics out there who neglect their diabetes but for me I decided to head down a di"erent path.

It has been my experience with most diabetics that we are signi#-cantly more knowledgeable about nutrition and our bodies than your average individual. Some of this is by choice and some of it is out of self-preservation.

In order to adequately care for your diabetes, you will need to learn the nutritional information of foods you eat, limit your intake of sugar and carbohydrates, maintain a regular exercise schedule, and have regu-lar blood tests and eye exams. All of which will hopefully lead you down a long diabetes complication free life.

6) DIABETES AS A PRE-EXISTINGCONDITION PRETTY MUCH ELIMINATES ANY CHANCE OF BEING ACCEPTED INTO A PRIVATE INSURANCE PLAN.

Hopefully this is something that changes with one of the many health care reform bills being discussed in Washington but since there is no guarantee change will happen I will discuss this topic anyway.

If you are diabetic and have insurance through your employer, the insurance company is required to admit you to their coverage under

what is usually called “Guarantee Issue Insurance”. What this means is if a health insurance plan is described as “guaranteed issue,” it means that applicants cannot be turned down for coverage based on their health status. Most job-based group health plans o"er coverage on a guaranteed issue basis.

!at being said, if you decide to leave your employer’s insurance coverage and seek an individual health insurance plan you are in for an uphill battle. I was considering leaving my current job a few years back and looked into private insurance. At the time I was 24 with no diabetic complications or other health risks, and a non-smoker. I applied to 10 di"erent individual health insurance plans and was rejected by every single one on the basis of my pre-existing condition.

At this point, at least where I live in Illinois, any diabetic attempting to secure a individual health insurance policy in all likelihood will be denied. As I mentioned this will potentially be changed with the upcom-ing health care legislation.

Most, if not all, of the legislation being proposed included provisions that all applicants must be granted insurance regardless of any pre-exist-ing condition they may have.

Here’s hoping....If you found the above article useful, take a look at others atwww.newdiabetic.net

JANUARY 2011

A recent Harvard Medical School study shows that women who took vitamin B6 and B12, as well as folic acid,

had a reduced risk of age related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of blindness in older Americans. Inexpensive and easy to take, this all-natural solution may o"er hope to millions a"ected by AMD and improve vision.

Age related macular degeneration is a disease linked to getting older that slowly, almost imperceptibly destroys sharp central vision. !is is the vision you need to see things clearly, as well as do some basic daily tasks like reading, watching TV, driving.

!ere are two forms of AMD, wet and dry and the type you have will determine the treatment you’ll use to preserve your sight and keep your eyes as healthy as possible.

For the research, the 5,000 subjects, all women over 40 years old and without signs of age related macular degeneration, were randomly assigned to take a combination of 2.5 milligrams of folic acid, 50 milligrams of vitamin B6 and one milligram of B12 (higher levels than the current daily recommended doses), or a placebo every day.

According to study author William Christen, folic acid, B6 and B12 are known to reduce blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that has been linked, if blood levels are high enough, to a greater risk of age related macular degeneration.

!e subjects the team used in this work were already participating in a study that was investigating using B vitamins for cardiovascular disease, and all the subjects had heart disease or at least three risk factors for it at the start of the study.

Determinations on their eye health were based on examinations of medical records or responses to questionnaires, there were no rigorous eye examinations or retinal photos taken as part of the research.

During the 7 years of follow up, the subjects answered yearly questionnaires to be sure they

were taking the vitamins and hadn’t developed any new disease.

During the study, 137 new cases of AMD were diagnosed, 70 of these caused signi#cant vision loss.

But the subjects taking the B vitamins and folic acid had a 34% lower risk of any AMD, and a 41% lower risk of AMD with vision loss as compared with the placebo-taking group.

!e researchers believe the bene#ts of the vitamin therapy didn’t appear until about two years a&er starting treatment - so this is no quick #x to be sure.

And even though the subjects in the study were women, the #ndings of the bene#ts of vitamin B likely apply to all older Americans.

“!e trial #ndings ... are the strongest evidence to date in support of a possible bene#cial e"ect of folic acid and B vitamin supplements in AMD prevention,” write the study authors, including William Christen an associate professor of medicine.

!e work appears in the February 2009 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine though more research will be needed on other groups of subjects to help #nd the right level of vitamins needed to bene#t the eyes.

Current estimates suggest that 1.75 million people have the advanced form of AMD, and another 7.3 million are in the early stages of disease.

Right now, treatment for AMD is limited to the later stages of the disease, but for the rest of us, there aren’t any preventative measures - except to stop smoking.

As you get older, or if you have concerns

about AMD, you might want to talk with your own healthcare team about including B vitamins into your supplementing plans.

As water-soluble vitamins, you need to replenish your resources each day. !ere are also ample natural sources of B vitamins that you might want to include in your diet.

Good dietary sources of the B vitamins, especially B12, are:- Animal products (meat, poultry) - Yeast extracts (brewers’

yeast, Marmite).

Other sources include:- Asparagus, broccoli, spinach,

bananas, potatoes - Dried apricots, dates and #gs - Milk, eggs, cheese, yoghurt - Nuts and pulses - Fish - Brown rice, wheat germ, wholegrain cereals

By including these vitamin B rich foods in your diet you can naturally help your body #ght o" AMD and improve vision.

I want to somehow help our #iends. What’s with holidays? Honestly, something’s mak-

ing people crazy! Not So Happy Holidays,

Davis, CA

Hey Holidays,!ree men die on Christmas Eve and go to heaven,

where Saint Peter tells them, “In order to get in, you must each produce something representative of the holidays.”

!e #rst man digs into his pockets and pulls out a match and lights it. “!is represents a candle of hope.”

Impressed, Peter lets him in. !e second man pulls out a tangle of keys and

shakes them. “!ese are bells.” He’s allowed in too. “So,” Peter says to the third man, “What do you

have?” !e third man proudly shows him a red scarf. “What does that have to do with Christmas?” asks

Peter. “It’s Carol’s.” !e Holidays truly are a most emotion-laden

phenomenon, aren’t they?!And boy, do we strive to make them work!!

/family standards

…all while showing holiday spirit and seeking to make the holidays meaningful.

EXPECTATIONS! Generally, your friends are being triggered by expectations they hold for these holidays – for their personal performance; for others’ performances, and for feelings of joy, celebration and comfort. While the US media sells these myths, many Americans are uniquely primed for disappointment this year.

So, why do the holidays bring out dramatic emo-tions?

THE HOLIDAYS...

Involve traditions handed down to us by our fami-lies and communities, leaden with eons of meanings and beliefs.

Intrinsic to inheritances are responsibilities – to respond, “play along”, and to continue the customs.

When we’re already feeling overwhelmed by life’s demands, the holidays’ considerations stress our resources.

Remind us of holidays past, and the people in-volved.

And that means people who we cherish as well as those who aren’t positive associations. !e busy-ness of life can mask feelings and/or simply allow us to sublimate and ignore sensations. !e emotional pres-ence of the past o&en brings these images right back

to us, along with their associated meanings.Tend to entail sharing one’s blessings with

and for others.!e current economic conditions stress our

esteem, sense of capability, and challenge our beliefs about success, blessings, and giving. !e Christmas holidays in general do this, and this year is exceptionally challenging.

Can provide some serenity or reassurance during challenging times

… But I’m not sure that many of our holiday images, activities and contemporary traditions provide much in this arena.

TURNING THE HOLIDAYS AROUND...-

cally. Making the holidays the only time of our year for important activities and connections doesn’t allow for celebration and serenity during rest of the year. And it makes the holidays rather heavy with expecta-tions and stress.

-tify personal values. Identifying what would make the holidays of value to you allows you to focus on realization of those components. Choose meanings from your heart, then practice and add traditions that re$ect those meanings!

NOTE: Some traditions are worth doing simply because the act con#rms the participants’ connection with history, with family and culture. Other customs are not honoring; perhaps are not healthy or repre-sentative of your individual values. !e U.S. culture features tremendous emphasis on individuality and breaking from tradition. A lot of warmth, reassurance and joy can be derived from maintaining traditional patterns, stories, mores and relationships!

Krishnamurti noted, “Every gi& carries its equal burden.” Help your friends and family reconnect with the blessings of their gi&s, and remind them that just being themselves is a gi& to you. !e holidays truly are about connection.

Macular Degeneration is a condition that a"ects the macula part of the retina of the eye resulting in a

disturbance to central vision. Although the exact etiology of the disease is unknown, it is believed that deterioration of the retina leads to a breakdown in the transmission of signals to the brain from the nerves and receptors of the eye. When the signals are unclear, the brain cannot correctly interpret the information it receives and there is a loss of the detail that allows us to read, recognize people, perform manual work or manage #ne tasks such as threading a needle. A person with macular degeneration may experience blurred or decreased central vision, blind spots, wavy lines instead of straight and size distortion.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF MACULAR DEGENERATION, WET AND DRY.

!e onset of wet macular degeneration occurs when abnormal blood vessels, which have grown under the centre of the retina, bleed or leak and scar the retina. Macula damage may occur rapidly. It is not uncommon for wet macular degeneration to start in one eye and a"ect the other at a later time.

Dry macular degeneration, which is the most common form, results from a gradual breakdown of cells in the macula leading to blurring of central vision. !e onset of dry macular degeneration can be detected early by an optometrist because of the presence of small, yellowish spots, called drusen at the back of the eye. However, people who have drusen, may not have visual impairment or related symptoms. When dry macular degeneration advances due to damage to the retina and nerves, vision loss will occur.

Macular degeneration is treated by laser surgery, photodynamic therapy where a drug is injected that destroys newly formed, abnormal blood vessels or injections, however, none of these treatments can restore the vision that has already been lost.

RISK FACTORS!ere are a number of

identi#ed risk factors associated with AMD. Family history and age are thought to be the most common risk factors. People with outdoor occupations and continuous exposure to sunlight may also be at risk, particularly if their skin is lightly pigmented. Women seem to be at a greater risk than men. !ere are also environmental and behavioral factors such as smoking and obesity. Research cited below shows that a build up of toxic heavy metals can damage eye health

RESEARCH!e National Institute of Health and the

National Eye Institute in the US, published the results of a random study of people with moderate and advanced AMD in the Archives of Opthalmology in 2001, entitled the Age-Related Eye Disease Study. !e study reported that a signi#cant slowing of disease progression and preservation of sight could be achieved by taking dietary supplements containing high-dose antioxidants and zinc.

Research published by Erie et al in 2005 in the American Journal of Opthalmology, measured the concentration of toxic heavy metals in the $uids and tissues of human eyes. Concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury, and thallium in ocular tissues, ocular $uids, and blood were found in the autopsy of 30

eyes from 16 subjects. !e study concluded the presence of lead and cadmium which had accumulated in the tissues and retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. Further study into the toxicity of these heavy metals and their possible role in eye disease was recommended.

WHAT CAN WE DO?In addition to the medical treatments

mentioned above, there are a number of common sense things we can do to help prevent the onset of macular degeneration.

In order for high-dose antioxidants and zinc to be e"ectively absorbed into the body and to protect the eyes from heavy metals, it is #rstly essential to detoxify the body. Published clinical trials have shown that when removing heavy metals and toxins, including pesticides and herbicides from the body safely and e"ectively, supplements will be more readily absorbed, the immune system may function more e%ciently and normal blood pressure may be more easily maintained. Eating a healthy diet, including green leafy vegetables and #sh, is also essential to good eye health. A healthy diet will help with weight control as will some regular exercise. Giving up smoking is critical for eye health.

Remember the most important step, to take a daily detoxifying shower on the inside to give your eyes the maximum chance for sustained health. Your body will love you!

Jannette has researched health and well being issues for the past 20 years and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Promotion. Healthy eating, regular meditation, moderation in everything and taking the correct supplements can make an enormous improvement to the quality of our lives. Hospitals don’t have diabetic $oors. But if they did, what type of patients would you see?

Most likely, a roster that looked like this:Room 101: Male, 45 yrs old, Type 2 Diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, cataract surgeryRoom 102: Male, 18 yrs old, Type 1 Diabetes, newly diagnosedRoom 103: Female, 35 yrs old, Pregnant, Gestational Diabetes with complicationsRoom 104: Female, 28 yrs old, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Metabolic SyndromeRoom 105: Male, 52 yrs old, Type 2 Diabetes, Gangrene, Stage 3 Kidney DiseaseRoom 106: Female, 82 yrs old, Type 1 Diabetes, Heart Attack, Bacterial InfectionRoom 107: Female, 14 yrs old, Type 1 Diabetes, Ketoacidosis, ComaRoom 108: Male, 68 yrs old, Hypoglycemia, dizziness, weakness, confused, shaky

!e variety of patients tells us that diabetes spares no age group and prefers no gender. It also tells us that diabetes is not something to pass o" as just a little sni'e – of the 11 patients in the hospital rooms listed above, #ve of them are walking the #ne line of life and death. !e rest of them would tell you that life changed for the worst when they developed diabetes.

If the disease could have its say on who to select as its next victim, you would see that diabetes is not random and does not only focus on those with diabetics in the family. Instead, diabetes will select those who may have other diabetics in the family AND include these types of people:

that proves this preference

to their health

improve their health

ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND WITH LITTLE WORK!e good news is that we’ve been in the Information Age for

over a decade now, and if you dig into the internet for a little study, you will #nd that those with diabetes don’t have to su"er serious complications at all! And some of you will even go the distance to achieve the immense satisfaction of saying to others, “I reversed my diabetes!”

THE ANSWERS ALWAYS INCLUDE FIVE MAJOR COMPONENTS:1 Immediate treatment2 Diet control3 Exercise4 Supplementation5 Weight control

1 IMMEDIATE TREATMENTWithout immediate treatment, a diabetic could end up in the grave.

So don’t decide to be ‘brave’ and start natural treatments for diabetes when you have never studied the subject. Get professional medical attention, which may include diabetic drugs to control the high blood sugar levels from the medical profession, and then alternative medical help to start the healing process. Be smart, not sorry!

2 DIET CONTROLDiabetes is a disorder of carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

!is means that you must make changes in the percentages of carbohydrate and fat in your diet. Diabetes causes metabolic changes to occur that allow the body to store fat. You must break this cycle if you want healing to occur.

Most Americans eat far too many carbohydrates in their daily diet. A breakfast of granola, banana, raisins, soy milk, and toast with butter contains a minimum of 120 grams carbohydrate. Diabetics must limit their carbohydrate intake to 35 to 60 grams carbohydrate each meal. Eating twice the amount of carbohydrates needed will create an exceptionally high surge of insulin production in a Type 2 diabetic which further contributes to wear and tear on the pancreas. Too many carbs eaten at a meal by a Type 1 diabetic can cause blood sugar $uctuations that lead to diabetic coma.

(1) Mushrooms have been used for about 3000 years by man to boost immunity. Yes, they were used that far back in time, because it was known that they were a super food to boost the immune system and prevent

illness and disease. !ey probably did not know the details about the immune system, but, they did know what was good for them.

(2) Science is continually researching mushrooms and they are checking the common mushroom for its ability to stop breast and prostate cancer, and how mushrooms can boost the immune system.Mushrooms are a Superfood. From this research over the last 100 years it has been found that:

- Mushrooms are one of the highest antioxidant foods in the world.

- Mushrooms are a good source of the essential minerals, selenium and copper.

- Mushrooms are an excellent source of #ber. - !ey can help to prevent disease, are a natural source

of Vitamin D and provide one of the most powerful supply of antioxidants.

- Mushrooms also provide B group vitamins such as Ribo$avin, Niacin and Biotin.

- Mushrooms are very low in salt, but they have many other minerals that are essential to humans, such as Selenium, Phosphorus and Potassium.

(3) One of the most important contributions to your health from Mushrooms is the help given to the body’s Immune System. Substances in mushrooms activate natural killer cells that stop cancer and tumors. Mushrooms have also been reported to bene#t Alzheimer’s. It is a terri#c way to boost your immune system, which in turn #ghts o" diseases and viral infections.

(4) !e common mushroom contains glutamate, which is a known $avor enhancer; this of course, makes it very tasty for eating. Mushrooms also help to give your stomach the feeling of fullness, which helps

you to control your appetite and therefore, an aid to weight reduction for health improvement.

(5) !e mushroom is a food that is neither a plant nor an animal. It is a fungus; this may indicate why it is a Super Nutrition Food. It can be thought of as a vitamin supplement since each serving of mushrooms provides a very healthy amount of the essential B group, vitamins ribo$avin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid and biotin.

(6) A serving of mushrooms will also give you about one third of your ribo$avin and biotin, and a quarter of your niacin and pantothenic acid needs for a day. !ey also provide a small amount of folate, the vitamin known to reduce the risk of spinal problems in babies during pregnancy

(7) !ere are thousands of di"erent edible types of mushrooms, and even more that are poisonous, so unless you are an expert on mushrooms it is probably better to stick with the better known varieties, like the Common Mushroom, Maitake Mushroom and Shiitake Mushroom.

(8) Shiitake is one the most popular mushrooms in Japan and are also well known outside of Japan. !ey are available fresh or dried.

(9) Maitake mushroom is another very popular type of mushroom in Japan. !ey are also available outside Japan. !ey are sometimes referred to as the king of mushrooms. !ese three types of mushrooms are very safe to eat and you can rest assured that they are very healthy and good for you, a natural super nutrition for your immune system.

Veera Yoga-Truth, Love & Compassion,

Through the Practice & Teachings of YogaBy Dr. Donna

RY When you pass Veera Yoga,

located in the Nugget Plaza at 711 Pleasant

Grove Blvd in Roseville, you might think it’s just another yoga studio on the map. Don’t! When you walk into this nonjudgmental space with octagonal shaped high ceilings, you’ll immediately feel welcomed and at home in a new community of like-minded people.

“!e word VEERA means warrior in Sanskrit. It is a spiritual warrior, one that #ghts for truth, love and compassion,” says Gangotri Garg, owner of Veera Yoga. “Veera is also short for Maha Veera, another name for the Indian monkey god, Hanuman, known for his strength while also embodying humility, devotion and love. Here at VEERA, we strive to embody these characteristics of Maha VEERA.”

Veera’s Founder

Gangotri Garg, owner of VEERA YOGA has been studying the philosophy of yoga for over 30 years. Early in her journey, she met her “guru” guru (spiritual teacher), Morari Bapu. Bapu’s teaching has remained constant over the years: Truth, Love & Compassion are the vital ingredients of humanity, of life, and of civilization. Each relationship, all our actions,

and every passing thought must adhere to and be anchored in these highest principles. !ey are not con#ned to any particular religion, nor are they attached to a speci#c time or place. !ey are as universal and as vital as the air we breathe. Gangotri’s love for these principles has spilled over into the mission for VEERA YOGA. She is determined to create a community around Truth, Love & Compassion through the practice & teachings of yoga.

How Does Yoga Impact Your Life?

Gangotri is convinced that how yoga works is simple.

“We breathe and $ow through various postures on the mat. When a di%cult posture comes, we work to stay present, maintain our breath, and even smile so that the uncomfortableness isn’t so bad. !en one day o" the mat when life hits and you are able to let things slide o" your shoulders, you realize the impact yoga is making on your life. !is is the purpose of yoga. Your yoga mat is the training course for life.”

“As yoga starts to come to life outside of the studio, you begin to realize that your potential is limitless. Your buttons are not easily pushed and you are able to respond to situations and people with truth, love and compassion.”

JANUARY 2011

Veera Yoga Classes

With a full schedule of 26 classes per week, Veera Yoga can accommodate those with even the busiest of schedules. All classes at VEERA cater to all levels of practitioners as they are committed to making this ancient practice accessible to everyone. !e teachers o"er modi#cations and enhancements to the postures and allow the students the freedom without judgement to #nd their own practice.

FIRST TIME STUDENTS ENJOY 30 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF YOGA FOR $39.

“It takes several classes before one identi#es with the changes (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc) that are happening from yoga. With a continued practice however, transformation is just a few short months away!” Gangortri said.

VEERA also o"ers a monthly Beginner’s workshop to allow new students a more relaxed environment to get used to the practice. In this two hour session, you will learn about the history and philosophy of yoga, we’ll break down some of the basic poses that you will experience in almost all of the classes you take at VEERA with hands on assists to ensure that you are able to feel the pose in your body, and then we’ll take you through a mini 10-15 min class so that you know what to expect when you come in for a regularly scheduled class. !e next Beginner’s workshop is scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd from 1pm to 3pm and registration is available online at veerayoga.com.

!ere are many more exciting events on the horizon at VEERA including yoga teacher training, yoga retreats & workshops

including pranayama (breathing techniques & exercises), arm balancing, partner yoga, classes from guest teachers and more!

.

Compassion at Veera

You’ll see and feel the truth, love, and compassion at Veera Yoga. Gangotri’s determination to express this to the community, was the inspiration for Karuna Corner. Karuna means compassion in Sanskrit. Karuna Corner is an area within the studio, the website and the monthly newsletters that posts compassionate acts on behalf

of the studio and the teachers. !is very young studio has already started to make a di"erence in the community through animal rescue & adoptions, fund raising for those in need, and for an organization that posts pictures of missing children in and

around the community.

Gangotri’s clients have nothing but positive things to say about Veera Yoga.

Kim Prock, a Sacramentan, reports: “Last night was my #rst “real” yoga class. I have been practicing at home for about a year now. And let me just say, it is alot harder than it looks. I got a great workout last night, and I am feeling it this morning. My muscles feel alive and my mind is at ease. :) I had such a great experience! I haven’t felt this relaxed in a long time. All of the teachers were hands on, and very helpful. !ank you all for such an amazing and peaceful night.”

A San Francisco woman, Donna, commented that the lobby of Veera Yoga is very welcoming with beautiful colors on the walls and a nice selection of clothing and mats and such. “!e room in very nice. Mellow with a huge

Yoga is union, connection, connection to yourself, the people

around you and the world at large. At the end of each class at VEERA, ‘Prem Devo Bhava’ a mantra is repeated three

SPIRITUALITY’S POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON STRESS RELIEF…

23

Melissa M. Avitia,LCSW!e secret of health for both mind and body is not to

mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly. By BuddhaAs this New Year begins, there are many of us who set personal goals to make this year better than last year. As individuals, we are constantly striving to live more ful#lling and happier lives. Yet, we o&en get caught up in every day stresses. Stress not only a"ects our body and corrupts its natural functioning; it also a"ects our mind and spirit as well. Everyday, each of us experiences stress in various levels of severity and frequency-once or several times per day. We have #ght or $ight reactions. But, our e"ort to discover the most useful deterrent against stress remains existent. !erefore, stress continues to be the foremost burden in our lives. Since its total obliteration is neither possible nor desirable, we can train ourselves to cope with stress in a positive manner utilizing our spirituality.

!e word `stress` is de#ned by the Oxford Dictionary as “a state of a"air involving demand on physical or mental energy”. Stress is o&en a situation, which upsets the normal physiological and psychological functioning of an individual. Medical text refers to `stress` as perturbation of the body’s homeostasis. !is intrusion on mind-body happens when it attempts to cope with constant changes in life. A `stressful` situation appears `relative` in nature. Stressful conditions are typically classi#ed as “acute” or “moderate.” Acute stress experiences are o&en detrimental to our physical and psychological health. However, moderate stress level in several instances is normal and can be bene#cial for overcoming personal struggles. Stress, however, is associated with every negative experience. Daily, we face various sources of stress and the common symptoms such as headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorder, allergies, insomnia, backaches, frequent cold and fatigue which can lead to diseases such as hypertension, asthma, diabetes, heart ailments, cancer, as well as anxiety and depression.

A range of practices connected with the path of spirituality—meditation, breathing exercises, physical exercises (yoga practices), and practice of positive thinking help us to manage stress physically as well as mentally. Our spiritual practices help us to maintain self-control and a calmer mindset. Research has proven that mediation brings down stress levels, improves balance and provides calmness to the mind. Spirituality facilitates intra-personal relationships. You come to know and assess yourself more, and try to grow as a person. In this way, you grow to be increasingly pro#cient and competent in facing life’s various circumstances.

Although, the common avenue that people use to pursue their religions/spiritual journey is through faith communities, here are alternative ways that you can use your faith to reduce stress.

Be Intrinsic-Find a personal way to experience spirituality in a meaningful way for you. Some people do this through personal devotions, meditation practice, and prayer. Be Optimistic- Phrases such as “When God closes a door He opens a window,” promotes a mindset of optimism. Research shows signi#cant bene#ts of optimism, which include superior health, increased determination, improved emotional health and decreased stress levels.

Find the Lesson- !ose who are more spiritual tend to see life’s stressful situations as a spiritual test of their strength, or even as a valuable lesson from God / or their spiritual #gure. !is can be a helpful distinction, since viewing a stressful situation as a challenge can make the situation feel less threatening. !us, you are not as physically reactive to stress, and you may even identify more e"ective ways to cope. In turn, you are able to change a stressful situation into a path of a better life or greater personal growth.

Research shows that those who engage in spiritual practices achieve greater relief from stress and bene#t from better physical and psychological health as well as happier lives.

What brings an herb or food to the superior position of the title, King of All Herbs? Is it the e"ects that occur

in the brain? Bene#tson the colon? !e immune system? Or the rejuvenative feelings? Or is it something else?

!e Reishi mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, has been known inChina for its health bene#tsfor hundreds of years. !ere, it’s calledthe King of Herbs. Ganoderma has adaptogenic properties thatinclude the following, according to over 3 million web pages on itsbene#ts:

Let’s evaluate the medical research found on Pub Med together;then you decide for yourself if Ganoderma really deserves the title.

Reduces Tumor Growth and SpreadJournal: Biosci Biotechnol Biochem, June 2008

Findings: In a study where Lewis lung cancer cells were injectedinto mice a&er they were given cyclophosphamide, scientiststested whether or not the usual immune system depression wouldoccur. Ganoderma suppressed the metastasis of the cells to thelung. Scientists concluded that by combining Ganoderma withcyclophosphamide, it was possible to obtain a reduction in thetumor growth and spread, and would be bene#cial.

Stopped Breast Cancer Cells Dead in Their TracksJournal: Int J Mol Med, May 2008

Findings: !e triterpenes from Ganoderma were tested againsthighly invasive human breast cancer cells. !e ganodericacids suppressed the growth and invasive behavior of the cells.Researchers concluded that Ganoderma could be a promisingnatural agent for therapy in those with invasive breast cancer.

Metastasis Prevented by Ganoderma; Mechanism DiscoveredJournal: Carcinogenesis, Jan 2008

Findings: Researchers discovered how Ganoderma prevented

metastases to occur – by suppressing metalloproteinase 9 enzymeability to phosphorylate an extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 / 2 through a medicinal constituent called lucidenic acid B. !econstituent also inhibited NF-kappaB and activator protein-1’s DNA-binding activities in human liver cancer cells.

Reishi Mushroom Holds Cells Tightly TogetherJournal: Phytotherapeutic Research Nov 2010

Findings: Scientists were on a search for herbs or botanicals thata"ect cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) at the Tai Sophia Institutein Laurel, Maryland. !ey searched the research studies and foundthat Ganoderma lucidum was amongst about a dozen herbs fromaround the world that had the ability to a"ect intercellular celladhesion molecule, vascular cell adhesion molecule and integrinand selectin families of cell adhesion molecules. !ey concludedthat botanical medicines may have the potential to provide therapyin those who had diseases involving CAMs.

Ganoderma Prevented Itch Associated with AllergiesJournal: J Pharmacological Science 2010

Findings: When an alcohol extract of Ganoderma lucidum wasgiven to mice that had been sensitized with mosquito saliva, theChinese mushroom suppressed scratching. !e scientists foundthat the mechanism that is behind this is related to somethinghappening in the body peripherally, not through the immunesystem’s mast cells and H1 histamine receptors.

Medicinal Mushroom Found to Be Strong AntioxidantJournal: Phytotherapeutic Research October 2010

Findings: One of the favorite types of tests that scientists like to dois test foods and herbs for antioxidant activity. If a food or herb isfound to be high in antioxidants, it can usually be counted on as asubstance that eliminates damaging free radicals and prevents fatsfrom oxidizing. One of the other bene#ts of antioxidants is thatthey may be antibacterial. Scientists in Serbia found high levels ofantioxidants in Ganoderma extracts as well as strong antibacterialactivity against Gram-positive bacteria. !ey concluded that thisfungi is a potential source of antioxidative and antibacterial agents.

It is possible in the fall that you have more summer squash lying around than

you know what to do with, especially if you have been growing your own or if well-meaning family members, friends, or neighbors have been growing it. Grilling squash is a great way to bring out its amazing $avor and you can season young squash with herbs and olive oil for a healthy and mouthwatering side dish.

If you like to make grilled fresh vegetables, you will #nd squash great for grilling. !e best squash for grilling is one that is heavy, richly colored, and free of blemishes and bruises. Crookneck squash, zucchini, patty pan, and other kinds of summer squash should all be bright colored. Turban squash, spaghetti squash, Hubbard, butternut, and other kinds of winter squash should be deep colored and have a tough skin.Preparing the Squash for the

GrillCut your squash down the middle, ensuring that

the pieces are not too thick else, they will take too long to cook. Keep the pieces evenly sized. You might need to cut a winter squash or big squash into three or four pieces.

Clean out the stringy part and seeds and rinse the squash pieces. Mix some olive oil with fresh herbs. Basil, oregano and cilantro work well and you should chop them #nely.

Brush the herby olive oil over the exposed squash $esh and put the squash directly on the grill, over a moderate to high heat.

Cooking the Squashto Perfection

It is nice to get grill marks on the squash but watch it so that it does not burn. Because squash has a concave shape, this will help to steam the inside and trap moisture. You can also cut the squash into smaller pieces or combine it with other vegetables to make a grilled vegetables recipe.

If you want to wrap chopped vegetables in foil

packages, you should grill these on the side of the #re or on an upper rack, turning them every few minutes so they cook evenly. You can also thread squash on to kabobs and cook them on there. When making grilled vegetables kabobs, use ingredients with similar cooking times so you do not end up with some undercooked pieces and some overcooked ones.

Recipe for Grilled Summer Squash with Fresh Oregano

!is recipe makes enough grilled squash to serve four people. !e oregano gives it a beautiful $avor and this is a very easy recipe if you like grilled fresh vegetables.

What you will need:4 young summer squash (zucchini, patty pan,

or yellow squash)1/4 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano1/2 cup olive oilSalt and black pepper, to tasteHow to make it:Split the squash in half lengthwise. Brush

the olive oil over both sides and sprinkle with some salt and pepper. Grill the squash over a moderate heat, turning it o&en. Cook for about seven minutes or until tender. Sprinkle the chopped oregano over the squash and serve it hot.

Squash is rich in nutrients and the smoky $avor from a grill means that you can make a quick squash side dish that the whole family will love. Snowshoeing is a fun winter recreation activity whose popularity has stayed strong

since its inception and right up through today. It’s also a popular and easy way to get around in snowbound areas during the winter. Nowadays, there are many types of snowshoes for many types of activities. Here’s a rundown of each type to help you choose the right snowshoes for your lifestyle and activity.

THE THREE MAIN TYPES OF SNOWSHOES ARE:

RUNNING &AEROBIC STYLE

!ese snowshoes were built with lighter weight materials than normal snowshoes to allow for faster movement. !ey also feature an extra cleat or cleats for additional traction while you are running or walking fast. Also, the bindings will allow you to insert running or athletic shoes, so they lace up and cradle as well. !ere are actually snowshoe races, and this is the type of snowshoe that is used in that type of race. !is type of snowshoe is right for anyone who will need to move fast or just wants to walk around town. !ese are not appropriate for snowshoeing in rugged terrain.

MOUNTAINEER STYLEMountaineer style snowshoes

are built much tougher and heavier than, say, running style snowshoes. !is is for added traction and stability on steep and icy hills. !ey typically include larger crampons to achieve this added traction. !e binding will also be able to accommodate larger shoes including climbing shoes and boots. Extra heavy duty material is used to create mountaineer style snowshoes, for better performance during di"erent types of weather situations and various types of terrain. !is also makes mountaineer style snowshoes the best choice for walking in deeper snow. Mountaineering snowshoes are the right choice for any serious snowshoeing enthusiast.

27

HIKING/RECREATION STYLE

!is type of snowshoe tends to be the most popular as it is appropriate for hiking, backpacking and light to moderate terrains. Recreation style snowshoes are made to be comfortable, with ease of use

and value as a big selling point. !is type of shoe is excellent for all around use, light use and the occasional hiker.

SIZES!is is an easier choice as there

are only a few sizes of snowshoes available. !ey are 6x15 inches, 7x18 inches, 8x25 inches, 9x30

By Charley Lawrence

inches and 10x36 inches. !e smallest snowshoes are usually for children and the middle sizes are usually best for women. Your weight will also be a consideration, as the heavier you are, the larger size of snowshoe you will likely need. You should also consider the weight you will be with your other equipment, skis, snowboard, backpack or other supplies you will be carrying.

BINDINGS!ere are two types of

bindings available, the free rotation and the limited rotation. In the limited rotation style, the toes do not go below the decking. In the free rotation the toes are freer. Free rotation bindings are preferred for running, racing and sometimes hiking. It’s best to try both styles and decide which is more comfortable for you.

WHATEVER SIZE OR STYLE OF SNOWSHOE YOU CHOOSE, HAVE FUN ON THE TRAILS!

ONLINE SKI LESSONS -7 SKI TECHNIQUES TOLEARN TO SKI WELL By $eodore Olson

The following fundamental drills are foundational to learn to ski well. While there are a variety of ski tech-

niques, all use these 7 basics in one form or another. !is is by no means an exhaustive list of exercises or drills, but they are the roots to learning to ski. Downhill skiing must of course be learned on the ski slopes. !e following text will give you context, descrip-tions, and metaphors to give you a better understanding both before and a&er you actually ski.

ONE: SKIING ON ONE SKIIf you’ve seen the Karate Kid, you’ll remem-ber how Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel that he

“must #rst learn balance!” Now, you won’t need to stand at the bow of a rowboat or get pummeled by ocean waves (you can if you wish). You will, however, need to practice skiing on one ski. Start on easy terrain such as the beginner’s area, and slowly traverse across the hill li&ing up one leg. Do this until you are comfortable with either leg raised. Practice both legs equally. Simply cross the hill back and forth, gently descending. Next, when you’re comfortable, start straightening out your turns more directly downhill. Practice this drill in small increments. It may be awkward at #rst, but you’ll improve rapidly.

TWO: SKATING!is drill is exactly what it sounds like - skating. Just as in ice skating, you push o" one inside edge of your skate to the other to move forward. You’ll just do this with skis on. On gentle terrain, push o" the inside edges of your skis to propel/push yourself forward. You’ll notice that your skies with naturally form a V allowing you to push from the back (somewhat) to create the forward momen-tum.You want your skis to become an extension of your body. Just as a tennis racket is an extension of An-dre Agassi or a golf club of Tiger Woods, you need to feel, know, and trust your skis.

THREE: SIDE SLIPPING !is drill is also just as it sounds. You’ll be slipping down the hill sideways.. Simply stand perpen-dicular on the hill (so you’re facing the woods or the side of the hill). !e edges of your skis, which you can feel really well because you’ve practiced “Skating,” will hold you in place. While on gentle

terrain, slowly $atten your skis by relaxing your ankles to the point where you start “slipping” sideways downhill. Let yourself slip side away. Tighten your ankles to stop. !en start again. Practice this exercise facing both ways. Next - have a little fun and try slipping slightly forward by pressing your toes down while you $atten your skis. To slip backwards, li& your toes up. Once comfortable with this, try it on steeper terrain.

FOUR: STEPPINGWe do this every day when we walk down the street. We put one foot in front of the other. We don’t lean too far forward or tilt backward - we walk in perfect balance. With this drill, you’ll just be walking with skis on. On gentle terrain, try stepping through a turn. Traverse slowly across the slope and prepare to step through another turn. What you’re doing in this exercise in training your body to lean forward (just like you do when you take a step). Just as you lean forward to begin walk-ing down the street in perfect balance, you need to lean forward to get your body down the hill, while maintaining balance. Not an easy exercise to il-lustrate, but imagine taking tiny baby steps around a corner. You want your skis to stay parallel - avoid the “snow plow.” While the snow plow turn (also known as the wedge) may be helpful to brand new, or nervous skiers, stepping is “just as easy to learn.” !e stepping exercise has the added bene#ts of not encouraging bad habits and helps you to learn to ski better faster.

FIVE: SHUFFLING SKIS !is lesson is similar to “Stepping,” except your skis are kept on the snow. Start by sliding one ski forward and the other back. It will be similar to Cross-Country skiing or using a NordicTrack Skier. On gentle terrain, shu'e your skis back and forth as you traverse the slope. You want to train your body (your hips speci#cally) to stay directly above your feet. When your hips are positioned above your feet, you have optimum control of your body and skis.

SIX: RAIL ROAD TRACKS !is is a bit more of an advanced drill that will take your skiing to new heights. Essentially you want to ski on the edges of your skis (by shi&ing your ankles) so you leave rail-road-track-like marks in

the snow. Start with wide a parallel stance tipping both ankles and knees while simultane-ously engaging your ski edges. Traverse gentle across the slope, back and forth. !is should be done on gentle terrain.

SEVEN: PIVOT FLAT SKI Master this and your skiing will skyrocket! Start perpendicular on the hill (like you do with the “Side Slipping” technique), but release the edge of your skis by leaning your upper body across and over your skis - rather than relaxing your ankles. !is body positioning will force your skis to $atten naturally. Once you feel your skis start to move, steer your feet so you swivel and face the opposite direction. Repeat and turn in the other direction. Try doing this with as little forward momentum as possible. It takes practice, but will give you the skills to ski virtually any terrain - trees, bumps, powder...etc. Own it!

If you think that you can only do limited things on a treadmill, think again. A&er all, with a little imagination and innovation, you can make your treadmill workout just as challenging as you would like. Here are a few suggestions for creating an intense treadmill workout. Of course, it’s always a good idea to check with a doctor before you start a

new exercise program or up the intensity of your current workouts.

DUMBBELLS HAND WEIGHTSTired of your legs doing all the work while your arms just hang there - or worse, grip the safety bars? Try raising and lowering #ve to ten pound hand weights as you walk along. Also, if you’re used to hanging onto the bars on your treadmill, you should start slow so that you don’t fall, and then simply increase speed as you gain con#dence. By the end of a vigorous walk, you will have given your upper and lower body a good treadmill workout.

WALKING BACKWARDSIt is obviously best to do this at a slow pace and without hanging onto the bars. Walking backwards uses the muscles in your legs in a whole new way and challenges you to pay attention to your balance as well, which is incredibly important in any sort of exercise routine. A&er this treadmill workout, you are guaranteed to develop aches in muscles that you never knew you had; remember that this is a good thing however, and that this means that your muscles are truly getting worked out.

SPEED INTERVALS

Be sure to warm up with some stretches before you try this technique, as with any other type of physical exercise. !e best way to do a speed interval exercise is to walk or run as fast as you can for one minute. !en slow the pace down for a two-minute breather. A&er the two minutes are up, do another minute at full speed, and so on. Repeat this cycle #ve to eight times, as this is an excellent example of a good aerobic treadmill workout.

CHANGING INCLINE INTERVALSAgain, be sure to warm up before you try this exercise. Walk as you normally would for #ve minutes. !en set the incline on your machine to four or #ve. Continue walking for another #ve minutes, then return the incline to zero. Repeat this cycle two times for maximum bene#t.

TOES AND HEELSWalk as you normally would for #ve minutes. !en slow down your speed and walk on your tiptoes for thirty seconds. Resume your normal walk for another #ve minutes, then slow down again and walk on your heels for thirty seconds. Repeat this cycle twice to exercise di"erent muscles in your legs and feet.A good routine for your treadmill does not have to be bland. Make sure to vary the type of treadmill exercises that you do to keep motivated and healthy.

What comes to your mind’s eye when you think “gymnastic class”? Is it the Olympian smiling out from the cover of Sports Illustrated? Gymnastic classes bene#t all kinds of people.Every year, millions of gymnasts enroll in gymnastic classes, from toddlers on small-scale equipment in parent/child classes, through teenagers learning skills on balance

beam, uneven bars, $oor exercise, and vault (for girls); and pommel horse, high bar, rings, parallel bars, $oor exercise, and vault (for boys).Keep these factors in mind when enrolling your child in a gymnastic class:SafetyAlthough your child’s #rst goal upon setting foot in the gym may be to $ip and leap, you should investigate the gym’s

safety record #rst. Safety includes the physical setup of the gym as well as the certi#cations held by coaches, such as CPR and basic #rst

aid. Find out if your gym’s sta" has taken the USA Gymnastics Safety/Risk Management Certi#cation course.

How Does Class Start? Before your child does his or her #rst skill, warming up, stretching, and body preparation are critical to get his or her circulation moving and prepare joints for impact.Learn About the GymWord of mouth is always useful, but keep in mind that each child’s experience is di"erent. Some children like a big gym with lots of classes going on simultaneously. Others prefer a smaller, more individualized environment. Either way, an 8:1 ratio is best for children ages 4 and up.Municipal gyms are o&en cheaper than private facilities. Private gyms, on the other hand, may o"er some amenities that municipal gyms do not. Be on the lookout, however, for a private gym that wants to accelerate your child through the ten levels of gymnastics sooner than your child is ready solely to rake in more tuition money.CommunicationYou and your gymnast should have a very clear idea of what to expect your child to experience, as well as what is expected of him or her. Gymnastics is learned very incrementally; coaches and parents should help kids deal with

the patience involved in learning the sport.Although gym policies about parents watching workouts vary, the gym should never completely deny you access; if the gym does not want you to observe their coaching techniques, you should stay away.Gym Joy!Coaches have many responsibilities, including supervising young children in a potentially hazardous environment, motivating kids to do more than they thought themselves capable of, and #tting in the planned activities for each section (oh, and then there is the topic of managing parents, whose expectations are frequently out of touch with their child’s abilities). In the long run, however, the experience of a gymnastic class should be fun. Once a child is training competitively, the ratio of “fun” to “pure hard work” grows smaller, but for a recreational gymnast, the enjoyment of the sport should outweigh the challengesVault your child to fun - enroll him or her in gymnastic classes!Katie Appleby is an accomplished niche website developer and author. To learn more about gynmastics classes see gymnasticstoday.info/head-over-heels-for-gymnastic-classes and please visit Gymnastics Today at gymnasticstoday.info for current articles and discussions.

LOOKING FOR A

DOG TREADMILL?Canine treadmills are becoming

more popular as they give you some great bene#ts. Walking your dog on a treadmill can help drain a lot of his energy - especially on those days where you can’t get out for a leash walk. It’s also helpful for those high-energy breeds like labs or boxers.

A doggie treadmill is a great tool on blizzard or storm days when you can’t get out. And for dogs that have weight problems, it can help them trim down and #ght o" other diseases that come with extra weight (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.).

When buying a treadmill for your dog you have 2 options:

OPTION #1 BUY A REGULAR TREADMILL

AND TRAIN YOUR DOG TO

WALK ON IT!e advantage to this is that you can use it, too. So

it can do double duty as both your treadmill and your dog’s.

!e disadvantage is that you need a belt long enough for your dog (I have a rottweiler and he needed the longest belt length available so he wouldn’t fall o" the treadmill - 60”). You also have to make sure your dog’s nails are trimmed so he doesn’t rip up your tread belt.

Dogs also drool and shed a lot, even while walking and this can a"ect your treadmill and even hurt the operation if too much dust and hair get under the tread belt. So make sure to clean the treadmill thoroughly every time Fido uses it.

Plus you’ve got to use a leash at #rst while training them to walk on a regular treadmill as they can o&en fall o" the sides and may even injure themselves. So it takes a bit of work this way.

OPTION #2 BUY A SPECIALIZED

DOG TREADMILLSpecialized canine treadmills get around

many of the problems of a regular treadmill. !ey are built lower to the ground with side rails so your dog has less chance of hurting himself. !ey are also built with dogs in mind so the shedding hair and drooling doesn’t matter so much.

!ey’re also built to accommodate the length of your dog - you can choose small, medium or large treadmills for dogs so your dog has enough belt and won’t fall o" the back of the treadmill while walking.

So those are two options you have to get a treadmill for your dog. As a third option, some people try to build their own dog treadmill but I wouldn’t recommend that. !is is one machine you don’t want to make a mistake with as it could cause serious injury to your dog.

You can #nd regular treadmills at many places. However doggie treadmills can be more di%cult to #nd. For the latest places to buy specialized canine treadmills visit www.treadmillreview.net/Dog-Treadmill.html

DOG TREADMILL - TIPS ON USING A CANINE TREADMILL

PETS

CELEBRATING YEARS | WWW.HEALTHFITNESS.US

Human Grade!en there are claims about “USDA

approved” ingredients, “human grade” ingredients and ingredients purchased right out of the meat counter at the grocery store. Again, at #rst glance - and super#ciality is what marketers like to deal with - it may seem that such foods

would have merit over others. But such labels only create a perception of quality. People would not consider the food pets are designed for in the wild - whole, raw prey and carrion - “human grade” or “USDA approved.” Because something is not “human grade” does not mean it is not healthy or nutritious. For example, chicken viscera is not “human grade” but carries more nutritional value than a clean white chicken breast. Americans think that chicken feet would not be #t for human consumption but many far eastern countries relish them. On the other hand, “human grade” beef steaks fed to pets could cause serious nutritional imbalances and disease if fed exclusively. Pet foods that create the super#cial perception of quality (USDA, human grade, etc.) with the intent of getting pet owners to feed a particular food exclusively is not what health is about.

Pet Nutrition Is

Serious Health

SciencePet nutrition is not about marketing and who can make the most money quickly. Unfortunately an aspiring pet food mogul o" the street can go to any number of private label manufacturers and have a new brand made. !ese manufacturers have many stock formulas that can be slightly modi#ed to match the current market trend. Voilà! A new pet food wonder brand is created.Pet foods are about pet nutrition, and nutrition is a serious health matter. !ere is an implied ethic in going to market with products that can so seriously impact health. But the ethic is by and large absent in the pet food industry. Starting with the 100% claim and on to all the fad driven brands that glut the shelves, health is not being served. Nobody other than our organization is teaching people the principles I am discussing here. Instead, companies headed

by people with no real technical, nutritional, food processing or health skills put themselves out to the public as serious about health ... because that is what the public wants to hear and what sells. Never mind whether producers really understand or can implement healthy principles. !e façade sells and selling is the game. Ingredients are important, true, but not less important than the expertise and principles of the producer who is choosing them, preparing, storing, processing and packaging them. Consumers place a lot of trust that nondescript processed nuggets are what consumers are being led to believe they are. Many a slip can occur between the cup and the lip. !ere are many slips that can occur between the cup of commercial claims and what ends up in the lips of the pet food bowl.

Consumer Blame!e consumer is not without guilt in this unfortunate - steady diet of processed pet food - approach to pet feeding. !ey want everything easy and inexpensive. !ey don’t want to learn or have to expend too much e"ort, and they want something simple to base decisions on like: “corn, wheat and soy are evil,” or “USDA approved,” or “human grade” or “organic is good.” !ey also want something for nothing and think they can get it in a pet food. People want prime choice meats, organic and fresh foods all wrapped up tidy in an easy open, easy pour package, hopefully for 50 cents a pound. !ey may even pay $1 or a little more if the producer can convince them about how spectacular their product is or how much cancer their pet will get if they choose another brand.

Are By-Products

Evil?In the processing of human foods there

are thousands of tons of by-products that cannot be readily sold to humans. Does that make them useless or even inferior? No. Such by-products could include trimmings, viscera, organs, bones, gristle and anything else that humans do not desire. Should these perfectly nutritious items be buried in a land$ll? As I mentioned above, while Earth’s resources continue to decline and people starve around the globe, should we feed our pets only “human grade” foods and let perfectly edible - and sometimes even more nutritious - by-products go to waste? How is that conscionable or justi$able for either the consumer or the producer?

The Pet Food

Ingredient part 3

JANUARY 2011 35AUGUST EDITION 201035

On a recent episode of “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” (AFV) one of the top three submissions for the $10,000 prize was a video of the a!ermath of destruction a family’s pet dog had done

to their home. "is dog had destroyed an end table, ripped the frame o# a doorway, demolished a patio door screen and frame, shredded carpeting, broken glassware, and had literally “eaten” a three foot by four foot hole in the wall - destroying sheetrock, insulation, and framing in the process. He was a one dog demolition crew! I was horri$ed and appalled as I watched the video and listened to the mixture of giggles and gasps from the viewing audience. It was as if the poor, unsuspecting family shrugged their shoulders and said “Bad Dog, Bad Dog, Whatcha Gonna Do?”

"e more appropriate question, however, is “My dog, my dog, WHY do you do what you do?” "e answer to that question is not a simple one. Entire books have been written concerning “bad dog behavior.” And the truth is that every dog is di#erent, and therefore, there is no “pat answer” for every situation. However, a basic understanding of “Who dogs are, and How they behave” will lead us to some appropriate suggestions on how to handle di%cult and domineering dogs. If you su#er from “Bad Dog Syndrome,” this article will help you understand who your dog is (Alpha Dog Mentality), and teach you how to “reprogram” and your misbehaving dog. Soon you’ll be saying “Good Dog, Good Dog, Oh how I love you!” You can $nd the follow-up article “Bad Dog, Bad Dog” Part 2, in the Feature Articles section at K-9 Out$tters, A Division of Damascus Road Enterprises.

But before we proceed, if you su#er from “bad dog syndrome” with your family pet, make sure there isn’t an underlying medical condition. Take your dog to the vet, explain your problem, and ensure he/she is healthy, and doesn’t su#er from dental, intestinal, digestion, parasitic, or other problems. Once you $nd that your dog is healthy, the following information should prove helpful.

Dogs are, by nature, pack animals. Pack animal behavior is instinctive from before dogs were domesticated and lived in the wild. Every pack has a hierarchy, and every animal in the pack has duties, responsibilities, and expectations. Since your dog doesn’t live in the wild, he/she assumes you, your family, and other household pets make up the “pack.” Many times, “bad dog behavior” is a result of confusion over “Alpha Dog Status” or “Alpha Dog Mentality.” You must establish that you are the “Alpha” dog in the pack. You must also establish that other family members, to include the children, all rank higher in the pack than your dog does. "ere are many ways to e#ectively put your dog in his proper pack ranking. Here are a few suggestions, or rules, for handling domineering dogs, and establishing pack rankings:

1When you enter the house, make sure your dog enters last, even if you must put her on a leash. "is shows her where she ranks in the family

“pack.”

2 Alpha dogs want the run of the entire house. Make sure certain areas of the home are out of bounds for the dog. "at may include certain

bedrooms, the laundry room, bathrooms, or the den. "is helps the dog know you are master of the house, not him.

By Danny Presswood Copyright Danny Presswood, 2006 All Rights Reserved.

3Alpha dogs occupy high tra%c areas, like hallways and entryways. Don’t step over or go around the dog, nudge the dog and tell her to

move out of your way, and make sure she does so. "is lets her know who owns the space and who is in charge.

4Don’t allow your dog to DEMAND your attention. Dogs usually do this by climbing on your lap, or by nudging your hand or arm.

Make the dog sit, lie down, etc., and then give lavish praise and attention. Remember, you control when you give your dog attention, a#ection, and praise.

5Exercise control over your dog’s possessions. Take away all her toys, then give her a command, and when she obeys, give her the toy as a

treat. A!er she plays with it for awhile, take it away again.

6When you come home, make your dog greet you $rst. Ignore him until he does. He must be submissive to you, not the other way

around.

7 Establish dog eating times. In the pack, the Alpha dog always eats $rst, and then the other dogs eat. Make sure the family eats $rst, followed

WHATCHA GONNA DO? PART 1BAD DOG, BAD DOG,

Dogs are man’s best friend, but as is the case with all good friends, friendships need nurturing and there can be trying times. As wonderful and rewarding as our canine friends can be, they

also bark, bite, roam, and occasionally get lost. !e answer, of course, is training and plenty of love and attention. !at, and taking advantage of all the amazing electronic pet equipment available today! Did you know, for example, that you can now get a dog GPS?

GPS, which stands for geographical positioning system, is being used

in numerous applications today, ranging from military, safety, outdoor sports and, of course, mapping. Increasingly, GPS is also used to track ships, trucks, cars, and now... dogs. !e way a dog tracking system works is that the dog wears a special collar with a small GPS unit that continually keeps track of the dog’s location. Every few seconds, the collar sends out a signal that displays the dog’s location, direction and velocity on a special handheld receiver that looks like a small cell phone. If your dog is a roamer, a pet GPS is an absolutely invaluable tool to quickly #nd him again. No more anxiety as your dog will never be lost again.

While dog GPS systems are perhaps the most sophisticated electronics available to pet owners, modern technology can be helpful in other ways as well. Excessively barking dogs can be a problem and a nuisance to even the most dedicated dog lovers. With some dogs, training will only go so far, and desperate dog owners may consider debarking. Fortunately, there is a much more humane solution in electronic bark collars. !ese collars detect barking via microphone and/or vibration sensing. If bark is detected, the collar will issue a harmless but e"ective correction. !ere are many di"erent models that o"er features such as multiple activation levels, adjustment to your dog’s temperament, and even learning the type of correction needed to reduce or eliminate barking. Some bark control collars may also contain harmless sprays that issue burst of spray as a bark deterrent.

Dog GPS and Other Electronics Help With Pet TrainingBy Chris Robertson © Danny Presswood, 2006 All Rights Reserved.

!ere are other electronic bark control methods. If a dog is well behaved but barks in certain spots (like at a neighbor’s fence), there are bark control units that can be hung in trees or on fence posts. If they detect dog barking they’ll emit a high pitch ultrasonic sound that humans cannot hear, but that is unpleasant to dogs.

Most dogs need exercise to stay in top shape and burn o" excessive energy. However, living conditions, time constraints or bad weather may not always allow dog owners exercise their pets as much and as o&en as they’d like (and the dog needs). For this, there’s another interesting technological solution in a dog treadmill. Pet treadmills work pretty much the same as treadmills for humans, but they are designed speci#cally for dogs. Speed is adjustable, as is the incline. Once used to it, most dogs love the treadmill and get an excellent cardiovascular workout while having tons of fun.

Electronics have changed almost every part of our lives, and now they can help with pet training as well. In the case of a dog GPS, they can even help save your dog’s life.

HELP BRING MISSING KIDS HOME THIS JANUARY!

Confucius said it best, “Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.” !is is a motto that we should all live by, becaeuse enjoying life is what it is all about. When you think

about your job, do you dread it? Or do you go to sleep at night excited about work? If you want a job that will make you smile, then consider becoming a ski instructor.

Getting a job as a ski instructor is not hard. You don’t have to be the world’s best skier. In fact, the most important thing is to be personable and be able to teach. When it comes to getting a ski instructor job, a friendly intermediate skier from Kansas is o&en a far better instructor than a picture perfect expert skiing Ivy Leaguer with no personality. Anybody at any age can be a ski instructor. Professional ski instructors come back year a&er year and love their career. But even if it’s not your career, it is just as satisfying to be a weekend instructor teaching for extra income or a college kid working holidays to earn a free pass.

It is estimated that 10 to 12 percent of the US population visit ski resorts each year. Of those enthusiasts, 75% are skiers. !is includes adults, children, teens, and adaptive skiers. And they want both group lessons and private lessons. But what is really important is that at every resort - from Vail, CO to Beech Mountain, NC - ski instructors are in demand. O&en during the busy seasons, resorts can’t #nd enough ski instructors!

So how do you get one of these coveted jobs? First, decide on the mountain you want to work at. Next, contact Human Resources before the season, online or in person. Or try talking to a ski instructor; you’ll get all the information you need and more. Once you contact your resort of choice, you might have to have an interview, which means you’ll ski around the mountain and chat on a chairli& with the person responsible for hiring. Most resorts do not require any experience and will train you in what you need to know, making you both a better teacher and a better skier in the process.

If a country has a ski resort, they also have a ski instructor association, like PSIA, BASI, or CSIA. Being a certi#ed ski instructor will usually increase your pay rate and boost your chance of being hired. If you want to have a certi#cation on your resume before you apply, there are several instructor certi#cation courses you can #nd by searching Google.

When it comes to ski jobs, ski instructors are at the top of the pay scale. Many people come to resorts to shovel snow or work as a li& operator. !ey o&en barely make enough money to eat. !ough ski instructors are not exactly pulling in a doctor’s salary, they are doing quite well compared to their ski bum brethren. Plus every once in awhile, a satis#ed “student” will shake you hand and you’ll #nd a tip - helping you with your next tank of gas or your next night on the town. Some ski instructors even make enough in one season to take the entire summer o" !

So what does a ski instructor’s job consist of ? Skiing everyday - up to 150 days a season! Your “work” will always be within your skiing limits, and everyday can be di"erent. Friday might be spent hucking cli"s, getting lost in bottomless powder, or carving a fresh groomer with another expert skier. Saturday you could be teaching a group of 5-year-olds how to stop, but also how to make snowballs. Sunday you might sip hot chocolate at the lodge and do a couple of runs with your private client. Monday you could teach in the half pipe. Tuesday might be spent helping a student learn to stand up without any help. !en, Wednesday and !ursday are your days o" and you’ll do the same thing you did at “work” on Friday. As a ski instructor, you’re guaranteed to have a smile on your face and you’ll be doing what you love – skiing!

So if you love skiing and are looking for a laid back job that keeps you out of a cubicle, give ski instructing a try. People will be green with envy, when you tell them that you are a ski instructor. And that on your days o", you do the same thing you do at “work,” but you just don’t wear your uniform! Not many people can say that.

WHY DOES OBAMAPLAY BASKETBALL?EXERCISE, SPORT, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELLBEING

We’ve been hearing about the president mixing it up on the basketball

court. George W. Bush would drag his security guards out on gnarly mountain bike rides. !e jogging habits of past presidents make national news (let’s not forget those $attering photos of Bill Clinton in his jogging shorts). Why would important and busy people like our presidents take time out of their day to participate in sport and #tness activities? What is signi#cant about this?

ANSWER:Research shows that

exercise and physical #tness are associated with better mental health and overall well being. When we feel good we do better in our jobs, create healthier relationships, and improve our overall day-to-day performance. Exercise is also associated with stress reduction, decreased depression, and decreased anxiety.

!e amount of physical activity

we get begins to decline at around age 6 for most. Yes, 1st grade is the prelude to the sedentary 6-8 hour workday. Add in homework, video games, and television and the amount of sedentary time increases. !e decreases in physical activity continue with our increase in age.

Exercise, whether for #tness or sport/competition can have many positive e"ects on your life regardless of age or level of participation. Regular exercise may increase con#dence, energy, and memory. Exercise can also assist in creating a positive body image, increasing work e%ciency, and improving academic performance. Research shows that regular exercise decreases absenteeism at work and also decreases anxiety, hostility, depression, tension, and anger.

How does it work? First, exercise increases blood $ow to the brain, which gives the brain more “food.” A change also happens to the chemicals in the brain where neurotransmitters release feel good chemicals such as serotonin, endorphins, and norepinephrine. !is also creates a reduction in

muscle tension thereby promoting a more relaxed state on a daily basis.

We can all come up with many di"erent reasons and/or excuses for not exercising or participating in sport. Here are some of the most common:

Perceived lack of timeLack of energyLack of motivationNot feeling in good enough shape to start I’m too old for this stu"

Perceived lack of time: If you really look at your day-to-day activities, the problem more likely lies in prioritizing. People #nd time to watch television, read, and hang out. Setting goals and prioritizing #tness can become a part of your daily routine.

Lack of energy: Fatigue is o&en more mental than physical. Fatigue can be the product of stress and anxiety. Even just taking a brisk walk has been shown to relieve tension and stress and actually be energizing.

Lack of motivation: It takes commitment and prioritizing to be able to take 30 minutes of your day to engage in some form of #tness activity. An important motivator to keep in mind initially is all of the bene#ts you can gain from exercise, one being an increase in motivation! Join a team or group. !e social experience can also increase the desire for participation. It comes down to making the commitment to get started. !e rest will follow.

Not feeling in good enough shape to start: Getting in better physical condition is the purpose! Fitness can start with a walk around the block. From there one can slowly increase until maybe it is a jog around the block, then 2 blocks, etc.

I’m too old for this stu": Being too old has become an excuse of

JANUARY 2011

No this is not a soccer discussion but a dialogue about creating goals in our lives. “Almost everyone makes those

life-changing resolutions in January”. !at line looks familiar because it also got us started in last month’s column (H&F Dec. 2010, Revolution Instead of Resolutions).

I want to congratulate those who have stepped up and become ‘revolutionaries’ in changing their own lives. My o"er to help create real change, by trying Taekwondo as a #tness lifestyle is still good for the rest of you. Come to any of our 19 locations now thru February to receive #ve free lessons individually with a black belt instructor. !e #rst three are learned individually, and your last two free classes you’ll join in group lessons. As I reminded you then, “In reality, making a resolution each New Year is o&en just a shortcut to frustration, denial and guilt a few weeks later.” Now ‘push’ is becoming ‘shove’ on those who only made ‘resolutions’ in this New Year. Will you reach the goals you have ‘resolved’ to reach? Let’s get SMART before just giving up.

Let me explain. SMART is an easy way to remember some important points, an acronym of goal setting changes. How do we really change our behaviors? Whether ‘revolution’ or ‘resolution’ there is only one way forward. Like walking to the horizon, you do it one step at a time. First comes focus. Next comes planning, followed by practice leading to achievement. SMART!

S. Speci#c goals are more attainable. Realistic targets require some thought. Get a notepad and write down exactly what you want to achieve. In martial arts we naturally learn this positive value by gaining belt levels through practice and testing ourselves. You should consider the following points: What does accomplishment of my goal really look like? What bene#t does it provide my life in the short and long terms? How will people react to my achieving my goal? Am I setting a speci#c, attainable mark? You may want to be an astronaut, but realistically, few will ever $y into space. However, you might set

a goal of working within the programs putting people into orbit.

M. Motivation. What motivates you in setting a goal? How can you measure your progress toward achieving it? While many people seek to achieve their black belt rank in martial arts, it is truly just a beginning and not an end in itself. A good long-term goal o&en opens doors to wider opportunities and greater expectations. We achieve that by setting in motion a series of measurable short-term goals. Sounds like school doesn’t it? It’s not, it’s life and you are ultimately the one in charge of how you live it.

A. Action. !is is the practice of how you work to achieve your goal. By putting change in action in your life your goal is achievable. But it must also be an achievable goal. If you are 5’0 tall you will probably not be dunking a basketball. Set reachable goals to achieve reasonable success.

R. Relevant. !is one is o&en open to suggestions, but I like relevant. A sense of accomplishment is gained by having relevant goals. How relevant it is in your life is really the bottom line. Is your goal improving your life? Health? Finance? Communication? Whatever

you have chosen should have impact. I have also heard this part of the acronym as representing Reward, which we all enjoy getting. Does your plan to achieve your goal provide rewards for measuring your progress?

T. Time. Getting a college degree is likely a positive goal to achieve. Taking twenty years to graduate may not be the best use of your time. Setting goals must always consider how long will it take? Can I persevere? Am I motivated to spend time working or practicing to reach my goal? Will that time investment equal the reward? With thought, planning, practice and reward almost everyone can take charge and change their life. As I asked readers last time, “No one can make you a better person but you. Are you in?”

EGO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-AL!!! DO YOU HAVE ONE?DO YOU NEED ONE? By Grandmaster Clint Robinson, Tae Kwon Do Black Belt, 9th Dan

Right now in America the U.S. Center for Disease Control says childhood obesity is a signi"cant problem. University of Iowa Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. Eva Tsalikian, says, “We are seeing more and more very young children who are overweight,” Since 1960, the number of children who are obese has doubled in the United States. #e U.S. government estimates that some six million children are now overweight enough to endanger their health.

(Obesity is loosely de"ned as weight that is 20 percent more than appropriate for height and build.)

“Studies show that obesity in children leads to obesity in adults, with resulting complications,” says Tsalikian. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1990 and 1998, obesity fueled a 33 percent jump in adult diabetes. However, the statistics are more alarming for young adults - for those between the ages of 30 to 39, the increase was 70 percent.

Why are so many children overweight? Less activity and high calorie diets are the most common reasons according to Dr. Tsalikian. In other words, we let our children spend too much time sitting in front of video screens and feed them meals that might be less nutritious than we think.

CHILDREN’S FITNESS AND FAMILY HEALTH By Grandmaster Clint Robinson, Tae Kwon Do Black Belt, 9th Dan

In a study of 400 teenagers, about one third failed to get enough calcium, iron, and several major vitamins. More than 65 percent of children between the ages of six and 19 eat too much total fat. Half of young people between ages of 12 to 21 engage in no regular vigorous physical activity. Running to the refrigerator or the bathroom between game levels isn’t exercise!

Why has this become an epidemic among young people?

Many parents think their children will grow out of it. Some children do “outgrow” weight problems. Only 20 percent of overweight four- and "ve-year olds become overweight adults. However, evidence shows that children who remain heavy through

adolescence tend to stay that way as adults.Society has changed. You need look no further than the demise of

home cooking and the increase of fast food meals. #e snacks and sodas many of today’s young people consider “normal” food are empty calories that do not promote a healthy life style.

Children su$er physically and emotionally by being overweight. For many children, it is not the extra pounds that take the greatest emotional toll - it is the reaction of family and peers. Self-esteem becomes an issue. What can a parent do to motivate their children?

Lead by example is almost always the best way. While kids will o!en fail to listen to parents or teachers, they sit up and pay attention when a martial arts instructor speaks. #is gives the instructor an opportunity to help change lives for the better. Better focus, improved health and
