Our teachers will also talk sensitively and compassionately about Autism Spectrum Disorder with our classes, with carefully constructed, age-appropriate discussion points and short videos. Morning Bell Song Choice Congratulations to 4/3J and Mr Janes for being selected to choose next week’s song. We can’t wait to find out what they will choose! How to Read at Home with Your Child Last week staff members Kasey-Lea McGill, Samantha Newth and Sonia Kadian presented a session to parents about reading. Materials that were referred to are online here. A video of the presentation should be published in the next week. Proud Harmony Day Moment Mastan of KP is so proud of her Iraqi heritage that she insisted her photo be included in this week’s Hezlett Happenings! It was lovely to see many happy faces last Thursday week during our Harmony Day celebrations and hope that my message of cultural diversity evolving from being tolerated to accepted to celebrated to preferred resonated with the community.

Registering for School Disco Registration for the school disco opened on Wednesday and continues on School Stream up until Thursday 4 April. Cost is $10.00 per child, with a $0.75 transaction fee added. The only way to pay and register is via the School Stream app. Reserve your child’s spot now! When events like this are held, student safety is our main priority. To that end, parents must drop off and ‘sign-in’ their children, and then pick up and ‘sign-out’ their children afterwards. Students attending the disco directly from Wesley Out of School Hours Care will be signed-in by OOSHC staff. NKAG Picnic in the Park The North Kellyville Advocacy Group is holding its first annual picnic in the park on Sunday. I would love to see many North Kellyville Public School families attend this fabulous community event. Our P&C will be cooking up a BBQ storm on the day.

School Plan Parent Forum – 3 April Over the next two weeks, the 2019-2020 School Plan will be written by the executive staff after consultation with stakeholders. Parents are critical stakeholders and their views are important. Over the last 3 Hezlett Happenings I have published a link to an online survey to collect parents’ contributions to the planning phase. The next and final opportunity for parents to make a contribution to our strategic plan will be held next Wednesday 3 April after morning lines, at 9:15am. There is no RSVP required for this. Parents wishing to be part of a forum where their views about the school’s directions will be gleaned are welcome to congregate at the small amphitheatre (near the office). Teacher Professional Learning Teachers are continually engaging in professional learning in order to remain informed, expert practitioners and to maintain their accreditation with the NSW Education Standards Authority. Recently our teaching staff delved into the world of STEM education in preparation for the delivery of engaging and meaningful units of work which will commence next term. Additionally, next week each team of teachers will be released from their classroom teaching duties for one day in order to collegially plan for an exciting and empowering term ahead. Your child will therefore be taught by a substitute teacher on the following day:

• Monday – Years 1 & 2 • Tuesday – Kindergarten • Wednesday – Support Classes • Thursday – Years 3 – 6

Parent Volunteers – Last Chance to be Accredited for Day 1 Term 2 Parents wishing to become registered volunteers in time for Day 1 Term 2 must drop off their paperwork to the office no later than Friday 5 April. We would love as many parents as possible to become school volunteers and appreciate the community’s understanding of the need to complete all mandatory checks to ensure the wellbeing of all of our students. Below is the message that has been in the last month of Hezlett Happenings.

1) If you would like to be issued with a parent volunteer credential (mandatory to be in classrooms or go on excursions etc), complete the following paperwork:

a. 100 points of ID to be brought to the office where it will be photocopied and kept on file for audit purposes

b. Appendix 5 which is a summary of the 100 points and a signed declaration about character and previous offences

2) The office will process this paperwork, take a portrait photograph of you and generate a

volunteer credential. This might take up to a week. The volunteer credential (pass and lanyard) is to be worn by volunteers while they are in the school for identification purposes.

3) Each time a volunteer comes to the school they can use their credential to sign in and out electronically from a kiosk set up in the office foyer.

Election Thank You Hardy members of our wonderful P&C Association coordinated an election day BBQ at West Pennant Hills Public School last Saturday. Thank you to Alison, Gloria and their team for yet another successful initiative. Site Update This week I had the privilege of touring ‘stage 2’ of the site construction. I was mightily impressed with all aspects including:

• Playing field preparation • Support class access driveway • Vegetable patch • Mulched play area • Hipwell Avenue parking and pedestrian entry

It is hoped, and expected, that when students return to school after the Easter holiday break, the whole of the site’s construction will be complete. Please read notices from the school over the holidays as updates will be provided, specifically about site access. Get to Know us! In the next few editions of Hezlett Happenings we will include some staff biographies. I hope that this helps you connect with our team. This week, get to know Miss Primci, Mrs Broome and Mrs Apap! Working Bee AMAZING! We had a great response to our call-out for parent helpers to attend a working bee this week in the library. Book covering is a “necessary evil” of schools and we are all over it at North Kellyville! The next working bee will be held whilst the school discos are on – so if you are able to stay around after dropping

your child off, please come on up to the library and help us cover a few books.

Book Club Thank you for supporting our first term of Book Club. All orders have now arrived and been distributed to students. Book Club will resume early next term with Issue 3. Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) At a glance:

• All books read are logged online – no paper records.

• Student login details are Department of Education (DoE) credentials used to log in to all Doe applications e.g. firstname.lastname + password

• 3-6 students must complete the Challenge independently but will be shown the process required to complete their reading records

• All K-2 students at North Kellyville will complete the Challenge as their books can be shared and/or read to them.

• K-2 students will have the books read with them at school, logged online by me.

• There is also a very useful information note available here

• If all else fails….Search NSW PRC via Google or see Ms Whelan!

Until next time…happy reading!

Parent / Teacher Interview Feedback Now that our parent teacher interviews have been completed, we would like your feedback to find out where the process was successful and where opportunities exist to improve for the future. The survey is linked here and it will only take a couple of minutes to complete. Easter Hat Parade Notice Please see the notice at the end of the Hezlett Happenings about an Easter hat parade being held later this term. What is Primary Ethics All About? Special Education in Ethics is a program run by parent volunteers that is scheduled alongside Special Religious Education classes. It relies on parents becoming trained and then teaching classes. A flyer is here with more information. Artemiss Keyhani is our one and only Ethics volunteer, but she cannot run the program on her own. She is more than happy to answer your questions and help you through the registration and training process. Artemiss has kindly provided her email address for those wishing to make contact - [email protected]. Get to know Elena Princi!

Question 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself… I am the classroom teacher of KP. I have a massive Italian family with 20 first cousins alone. I love big family gatherings where Nonna would cook up a feast while we all laugh around the dinner table. My favourite food is pasta and being Italian we make our own tomato sauce every year. I love dogs - who doesn’t? They are so cute and cuddly! I have a Pomeranian x Chihuahua at home and her name is Bella. I love staying active on the weekends either by going to the gym, going for long walks or even a bike ride. I also love movies. Nothing beats sitting down with a cup of hot chocolate and watching a good film!

Question 2: Why did you become a teacher? I didn’t always know I was going to become a teacher. I first completed a Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences and worked at Sydney Adventist Hospital until I decided to go back to university to do a postgraduate course of Primary Education. I am fortunate that I went down this path as I can apply knowledge from both fields into my love for teaching. I always knew I wanted to do something with children and being able to watch them learn and grow is something very special to me. Question 3: What is your favourite subject/concept to teach and why? I enjoy teaching Mathematics. I love numbers! Growing up my dad, sister and I always enjoyed this subject and I still remember times where we would sit and solve problems together. When teaching maths I love seeing a student’s face light up when they understand the strategies they need to use in order to get the answer. Question 4: If you could have a super power what would it be and why? Definitely would be to have super speed! I am always so busy so this super power would allow me to get so much more done during the day. Could you imagine being able to do all your chores in the blink of an eye? That would be fantastic! Question 5: Share one interesting fact about you? Even though I am Italian I have never been to Italy! I plan on going within the next few years and I am looking forward to it.

KP Staying Active!!! KP has been thoroughly enjoying our weekly sessions of Moving Bodies in the hall. We are learning a range of position and actions such as pencil, star, tuck and our motorbike landing.

Question 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself… I am the administration manager for our school. I live in the hills district, have 2 adult children and enjoy living in Sydney. Question 2: Why did you become a SASS member? I came to work in school offices when my children started school. I love working in primary schools because I like helping students and teachers to have a great school day each and every day. Question 3: What is a passion/interest you have? I really love to cook for my family and friends. I also like to sew all sorts of different things from clothes to bags. Question 4: If you could have a super power what would it be and why?

The superpower I would like to have is called Omnilingualism or All-Speak which is the ability to perceive and communicate in any and every language including sign language without ever being taught. I then would always be able to understand what everyone is saying where ever I am in the world. Question 5: Share one interesting fact about you? My best friend is a girl I met the first day of High School. We have been friends for 47 years and still haven’t run out of things to talk about.

Question 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself… I am a proud mother of two beautiful children. I have been teaching for 14 years and this year I am one of NKPS’s Creative Arts teachers. My family and I enjoy travelling overseas as much as possible. I LOVE chocolate and in my spare time (not that I have much of that) I enjoy going to the beach, sewing, singing, drawing/painting and watching some of my favourite TV shows. I love all things Disney! I have been to Disneyland in Paris, Disney World in Florida as well as Disneyland in Los Angeles three times. Next up… Disneyland in Tokyo. Question 2: Why did you become a teacher? I knew from a very young age that I wanted to become a teacher! I would play schools with my chalkboard and dolls each day. I

always enjoyed school and loved learning. I was fortunate enough to have encouraging and creative teachers as role models. I endeavour to nurture confidence and a love of learning in my students. Question 3: What is your favourite subject/concept to teach and why? I love teaching the Creative Arts so I am extremely lucky to be one of NKPS’s Creative Arts teachers!!! I grew up in a very artistic and musical family which allowed me to develop a real love for the visual arts and music in particular. The Creative Arts allows students opportunities to express themselves in varying ways and I look forward to providing exciting and creative learning opportunities for the students of NKPS. Question 4: If you could have a super power what would it be and why? If I could have a super power it would be an ability to fly. My family and I love travelling so much so this would definitely come in handy! Question 5: Share one interesting fact about you. I was DUX of my high school.

NKPS loves to dance!

The Creative Arts Focus this term is Dance…

Easter Hat Making and Parade (Years 3-6)

Dear Parents/Carers, The North Kellyville Public School Easter Hat Parade will take place on Thursday 11th April, 2019. The Assembly will commence at 2pm and will take place in our school hall. Students in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two will work alongside their peers in Years 3-6 to design and construct an Easter hat to model during the parade. The creation of hats for K-2 students will take place during the school day. For students in Years 3-6 who wish to participate, we are kindly asking that they create their Easter hats at home. Students in Years 3-6 will be actively assisting those in K-2 and as a result, there will be minimal time for them to create a hat for themselves. Once your child has created their hat, please send it to school by no later than Wednesday 10th April, 2019. If you prefer that your child does not participate in this event, please inform your child’s teacher of your decision. If you have any further questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher. We encourage parents, caregivers, family and friends to join us on this day and look forward to showcasing student talent at our Eggs-trodinary parade! Easter Hat Making and Parade (Years K-2)

Dear Parents/Carers, The North Kellyville Public School Easter Hat Parade will take place on Thursday 11th April, 2019. The Assembly will commence at 2pm and will take place in our school hall. Students in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two will work alongside their peers in Years 3-6 to design and construct an Easter hat to model during the parade. In preparation for this, we kindly ask parents/carers to support this experience by supplying their child with a hat (which students will glue supplies on) and a variety of decorations which will assist them in constructing their unique masterpiece! Trying to decide what to buy can be tricky so, in hopes to help, below are some examples;

• feathers • Easter stickers • ribbons/streamers • straw • felt/foam cut outs • bows • pipe cleaners

Many of these supplies are inexpensive and can be readily found at discount stores. Please remember to purchase supplies that are light in weight and those that can be easily glued onto the Easter hat! Students are required to put their items in a labelled (name and class) plastic bag and give them to their teacher by no later than Wednesday 27th March, 2019. We encourage parents, caregivers, family and friends to join us on this day as the students’ showcase their creations. If you prefer that your child does not participate in this event, please inform your child’s teacher of your decision. Looking forward to seeing you at our Eggs-stra special parade!
