HESSENPARK OPEN AIR MUSEUM

HESSE ELECTRIFIEDThe electricity industry from its beginnings to thepresent dayThe special exhibition organised by the EconomicArchive of Hesse (Hessisches Wirtschaftsarchiv) in Darm-stadt and the Hessenpark Open Air Museum trace the history of the progress of the electricity supply industryin Hesse from the 1880s to the current discussions about the use of alternative energies. Vacuum cleaners, fridges and electric ovens all tell stories about their appearance on the domestic scene and how they have changed it.26 March to 3 December 2017

THE VOGELSBERG RAILWAY BETWEENLAUTERBACH AND STOCKHEIMPhoto documentation from 1940 to 1983The Wetterau Railway photographers, Wilfried Kohl-meier and Ernst Bäppler, have collected a plethora of images of the former Vogelsberg Railway. They have selected the best motifs for the exhibition and supplemen-ted them with historical images. The photographs show quite possibly the most beautiful Hessian mountain rail-way as a vital lifeline for the rural community, and its slow decline in the face of competition from road transport.28 May to 3 December 2017

MINIATURE CAMERASCameras have continued to evolve since photographywas first developed in 1839. Not only has the quality of cameras improved, but their size has been reduced con-siderably. This aspect is the subject of a special exhibition at the Photography House and demonstrates the develop-ment of the miniature camera from its beginnings to the present day.26 February 2017 to March 2018

EVERYDAY LIFE, UPHEAVAL AND MOMENTUMBarbara Klemm: Photographs from HesseThe renowned photographer, Barbara Klemm, became famous with her photographs of key political events in Germany, Europe and many other areas of the world. But her scenes of everyday life and portraits are without equal in capturing the Zeitgeist. At the Open Air Museum, this photographer shows a selection of her black-and-white photos taken between 1969 and 2001 in Hesse.5 March to 3 December 2017

LICHER PHOTOGRAPHIC PRIZE 2016The privately-owned Licher brewery has been awarding the Licher photographic prize »Mensch und Natur« [Man and Nature] every year since 1995. Hundreds of amateur and professional photographers from around the world submit their best shots on this topic. The 50 best images are on show.12 March to 23 April 2017

HOUSES WITH STORIES TO TELL Over a hundred half-timbered houses from five different centuries, situated on the 65-hectare museum estate, invite visitors to discover the everyday lives of the people who lived here. The uncomfortable school benches from the turn of the 20th century, the cool walls of the 15th-century church, the clattering of crockery in the 1950s’ pub and the narrow room in the 18th-century smoke house – the homes, churches, workshops, farmsteads and mill buildings as contemporary witnesses made of wood and stone allow us to catch a glimpse of the past.

A LIVING MUSEUMWhenever you visit from March to October, at least three craft demonstrations are taking place daily in the Open Air Museum. By visiting the workshops, you can findout about old techniques and discuss them with the crafts-people. Whilst out and about in the museum, you will encounter hens, goats, sheep and cows in the meadows and saddleback pigs outside right next to the villagestreet. Throughout the year, there are various exhibitions, seasonal events, museum theatre performances, presenta-tions and tours – all in a tranquil environment – offering an interesting and varied day at Hessenpark.
