Welcome

Welcome to the first evening game of the season at Hertingfordbury for what promises to be a great game. The Blues have started well and will be looking to build on the momentum of Saturday’s win against Harlow in another local derby clash. We welcome a Waltham Abbey side who have made a 100% start to the league season so will present a tough challenge and a good gauge of our progress this season. Look out in particular for the return to Hertingfordbury of flying winger Prince William Domafryie who served us with distinction last season. Food and drink is available as ever so- whilst observing covid-restrictions- enjoy your evening.

INTRODUCING ‘PITCHING IN’ – THE NEW PARTNER OF THE ISTHMIAN LEAGUE

GVC is delighted to announce that the new sponsor of the Isthmian, Northern Premier, and Southern Leagues - is Pitching In. Pitching In, is a new Grassroots Sports Investment Programme that has today been launched by GVC, the multi-national sports-betting and gaming group which owns Ladbrokes and Coral.

The partnership covers all three leagues that make up Steps 3 & 4 of the National Leagues System, who market themselves collectively as the Trident Leagues. England footballing legend Stuart Pearce, who played for Wealdstone FC for five years at the start of his long and illustrious career, has been appointed as the official Pitching In ambassador. Stuart Pearce says:

“I am delighted to be taking up the role of ambassador for Pitching In, as I’m passionate about the importance of investing in grassroots sports and in developing young talent. I started out playing for Wealdstone FC before joining Coventry City so I understand how important funding is to the non-league game. Grassroots football is facing huge challenges at the moment and many clubs are struggling to stay afloat. GVC’s Pitching In investment will help make a big difference to hundreds of clubs and thousands of players across the country.”

Pitching In has been set up with the objective of supporting, protecting and encouraging grassroots sports in the UK through a range of initiatives. In addition to financial support, a key focus of the partnership will be to facilitate and encourage members of the community to become volunteers, and do some pitching in of their own. A Pitching In volunteering scheme will be established to link GVC’s Ladbrokes and Coral shop colleagues with their local clubs.

In the weeks ahead Pitching In and the Trident Leagues will be announcing further initiatives to provide financial support and opportunities for all the 226 clubs (rising to 240 in 2021).

Brief club history

Waltham Abbey Youth Club, based in Waltham Abbey, Essex, first played football at “Capershotts” during the Second World War and in later years the club became known as firstly Waltham Abbey, then Abbey Sports. Both clubs gained numerous honours in the Northern Suburban League. The club was founded in 1944 with a mix of players from Waltham Abbey Youth Club and former juniors from Tottenham Hotspur under the leadership of the trainer and manager Wally Hickman. The secretary was Mo (Maurice) Ward. The President was Capt. Larkin. In their early years they played to a high standard and reached the final of the Herts Junior Cup in three years out of four but lost on each occasion – including a loss to Redbourn Rovers of 4–5 after they had been leading 4–1. Some of the leading players in the early years included left winger Dave Cook who was killed in a road crash, centre-half Robbo Robinson and inside forward Frank Blower. Frank later became a dedicated treasurer of the club with Ray Buck as a similarly dedicated club secretary. Waltham Abbey United emerged in the late sixties and a new clubhouse was built. In 1974 the club amalgamated with the successful Beechfield Sports and joined the Metropolitan League, which later became the London Spartan League. In 1976 the club won the Essex Junior Cup and later that summer dropped the Beechfield Sports tag on the advice of The FA. Two years later the club reached the final of the Essex Intermediate Cup and won the league’s Division One title, and, having gained Senior Status, were promoted. In their first season they won the title without losing a game and were again promoted this time to the Premier Division where they remained until season 2000–01. Season 2001–02 was spent in the Essex & Herts Border Combination to allow them to move across the pyramid. They were elected to the Essex Senior League for season 2002–03. In 2004–05, in addition to winning both the League Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy they finished in their highest position of 3rd. In 1990–91 the club were inaugural finalists in the Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy, a competition for local teams including Cheshunt, Ware, and Hertford Town. It was won for the first time in 1994–95 when they beat Hoddesdon Town. In both 1996–97 and 2005 (in the final held over from the previous season) they beat St Margaretsbury. In 1998–99 they won the London Senior Cup with a fine 3–2 win over Bedfont at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground, and they also secured the Spartan South Midlands Challenge Trophy. Recent seasons have seen a lot of changes on and off the pitch with floodlights being installed in 1990 and the ground levelled. A great amount of work has been done around the clubhouse and a 200-seater stand built. A number of seats were purchased from Manchester City´s old Maine Road and

these were installed during the summer of 2005 as the club strived to improve facilities on and off the field and move up the non-league pyramid. On 2 May 2009, the Abbott's capped off a successful 2008–09 season by beating Concord Rangers 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to win the Isthmian League Division 1 North Play-off's. They played in the Isthmian League Premier Division for the first time in their history in 2009–10. However, despite winning the last two games of their season, they finished 21st and were relegated back to Isthmian League Division 1 North for the 2010–11 season on goal difference. In 2011 John Martin was elected Chairman and in subsequent years has transformed the ground and facilities. A new pitch with professional irrigation system has been laid 3 times with the surface now the envy of many a grass pitch in the league. A new car park has been laid, replacing the old shingle, a long overdue addition. In 2019 it is expecting new changing rooms will be completed with a new clubhouse pitch side the next project.

Talk of the Town

Young(er) Guns Go For It! Hertford Town 5 Grays Athletic 2 FA Youth Cup Qualifying Round 7.10.2020 The Blues youth team continued their impressive progress in this prestigious cup tournament with a fine win in front of a noisy crowd under the lights at Hertingfordbury. Hertford booked a place in the next round despite conceding a soft goal in the first minute- a free header from a corner- and then later getting pegged back to 2-2 in an almost identical manner when dominating the game. Three late goals sealed the game and earned a tie against the winners of Leiston v Saffron Walden in a couple of weeks’ time. It could have been much more straightforward with the Blues hitting the woodwork four times and forcing countless other near chances. The goals game from the flanks with Ben Weyman showing his experience, class and industry with two goals and an exceptional all-round performance and L’Shiay Aguh bagging a superb hat-trick. There were also notable performances from centre-back Ernest Vojange, who was excellent in bringing the ball out of defence, and centre-forward Ziad Bakkar, whose hold-up play was a big factor in the near non-stop assaults on the Grays goal. It was, in fact, a great all-round team performance and there is every reason to believe that this exciting young side can progress much deeper into the tournament.

Non-league matters

Cut AdriD While wearing a mask to the bar might be a bit of a chore spare a thought for those non-league sides whose seasons have been far more badly affected by the covid-19 pandemic. Guernsey FC, of Isthmian Division 1 South, recently had to pull out of the league for this season as the suspension of flights from the island to Gatwick had effec0vely isolated them. Mac Le Tissier’s club will be allowed to retake their place in the league for 21-22 but will now be led kicking their heels and licle else for a year. The same fate seems likely to await FC Isle of Man, who were due to join the North West Coun0es league this season but are yet to start a campaign that will probably also be put on hold for a year. Jersey Bulls have been more fortunate than their fellow island sides, since air restric0ons are not as stringent, but will be hampered by having to play all their fixtures away this season. The Bulls have also been hard hit by the pandemic in that the voiding of last season robbed them of certain promo0on to Tier 5 ader winning all 27 of their fixtures in the Combined Coun0es League Division 1.

Match Reports

Hertford Town 1 Harlow Town 0

Hertford took the points in this cross-border derby with Essex neighbours Harlow courtesy of a penalty late in the first half converted by Sam Faniyan. The home side started strongly and had shots from Paul Symes and David Ogbonna well saved by visiting keeper Rob Budd early on. Harlow came back into the game but it looked likely to go into the break goalless until a sweeping Blues move up the right led to the breakthrough. Lively winger Gursawek Jagdev won the spot kick that ultimately sealed the win after being felled in the box after working a one-two with player-boss Ben Herd. For Blues fans with memories of last season’s poor forms from the penalty spot seeing Faniyan comfortably despatch the kick was a welcome sight.

The second half was a more stop-start affair than the first with a flurry of injuries and substitutions breaking up the play. However, the visitors did see a goal chalked off for offside and Ogbonna hit the bar with a long-range drive. A seemingly endless period of injury time made it a nervous watch at the end for Blues fans in the 305 crowd but, in truth, a home win was never really in doubt. Hertford Town look a more resilient outfit than last season and confidence is steadily building for the year ahead.
