Prayer of Confession

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Celebrating the 41st Heritage Sunday At First Presbyterian Church (1981-2021)

The first Heritage Sunday service was based on an order of service from the Church of Scot-land and used in St. Andrews and West Kirk in Auchterader, Scotland, where Dr. David Glenn Walker, Pastor Emeritus, had served in a pulpit exchange in 1960. Having observed such pageantry and color at the churches he served, he resolved to introduce some of these elements to churches he would serve when he returned to America. And so, he did—including Wichita First Presbyterian Church. The Highland congregations don’t have the bagpipes every Sunday, but use them for festival celebrations and parades.

Affirmation of Faith - Excerpt from confession of 1967

The life, death, resurrection, and promised coming of Jesus Christ has set the pattern for the church’s mission. His life as man involves the church in the common life of men. His service to men commits the church to work for every form of human well-being. His suffering makes the church sensitive to all the sufferings of mankind so that it sees the face of Christ in the faces of men in every kind of need. His crucifixion discloses to the church God’s judgment on man’s inhumanity to man and the awful consequences of its own complicity in injustice. In the power of the risen Christ and the hope of his coming, the church sees the promise of God’s renewal of man’s life in society and of God’s victory over all wrong.

Journey’s Classes in October and November!! Words of Life: Jesus and the Promise of the Ten Commandments Today

by Adam Hamilton

What if the Ten Commandments were not just a set of ancient rules, but a guide to experiencing the good life today?

Nearly everyone has heard of the Ten Commandments, the list of "thou-shalt-nots" found in the Bible. Jesus saw these commandments not as onerous burdens, but as guideposts to help us experience a good and beautiful life. These ten ancient "words" were given to us by a loving God who longed to set safe boundaries, create order out of chaos, help communities live peacefully, and protect us--often from ourselves. In this book of Scripture and inspiration, bestselling author Adam Hamilton brings modern eyes to the most important set of ethics in history.

Please come join us in this intriguing book and video series!! There are two oppor-tunities: • Sunday mornings (Journeys Class) at 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. from October 17

through November 21 (no class on October 31). Dick Wieland will lead in the Hobbs Room and via Zoom.

• Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. from October 20 through November 24, led by Pastor Brent in the Hobbs Room and via Zoom.

Books are available in the church office for $20 each. Nursery services are available.

SESSION NEWS • Establish a Pastor Nominating Committee for the purpose of selecting a co-

pastor* The PNC will consist of two session members, one deacon representa-tive and four at-large members.

• Per the Book of Order, the term co-pastor is used so that Brent can serve as our interim pastor until the next called pastor is installed.)

• Approved Personnel’s & Facilities’ request to install “No Trespassing Signs” on the premises

• Approved Facilities’ request to shorten (instead of complete removal) of the awning over the South Entrance

Welcome, Visitors! We extend a special welcome to those who are visiting First Presbyterian Church this morning. We are glad you are here! If you recently had a change in address, e-mail, or phone number, please feel free to contact the office on Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. so that we may update your information.

Please remember to turn off your cell phone before worship this morning. Please sign in at the front entrance prior to entering the Sanctuary for Sunday worship service. Thank you.

Children’s Information-Children are welcome in worship. We do not mind a little fidgeting and fussing in the pew. Finally, we encourage you to consider the Nursery, which is located in the south end of the Case Building, where we have trained Staff to supervise and engage your child from birth to Kindergarten. If we need to contact you during worship, just give us your cell number and we will text you, if needed. You and your child’s (spiritual, emotional, and social) needs are important to us.

-Liz Norris, Director of Children’s Ministry A quick reminder: Under the Child Protection Policy children are not allowed to leave the Sanctuary without an adult escort. In addition, all children and youth group activities including children in the Nursery must be supervised by a minimum of 2 authorized staff or volunteers.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Praying for the Church Family-As a congregation we weekly focus our personal and corporate prayers upon a selection of church members and friends. Let us remember in prayer this week the following: Merl Hollis, Dolores Johnson, Jack Mahan, and Janice & Jeffrey Van Sickle.
