    Site Description

Heritage Foundation representatives visited theregion and were guided by the District Govern-ment and Khairpur Civil Society, in identiyingvillages that required most assistance. Findingsbased on inormation collected, visits to dierentsites, interviews and discussions with local com-munities and civil society organizations suggest-

ed that the community at the Darya Khan Shaikhvillage was the most economically challenged.

Te village is in what is locally known as kac-cha (along the river bed) area. Te communitymembers are primarily tenants to small holdingo land which they work or a landlord. A largerpercentage o produce is handed over, resultingin a very low income or each amily. Based onsurvey carried out it was ound that amily sizes

are large with 7-8 children. Aected households exceed 50 homes and the District Government has providedthe Heritage Foundation with a list o intended beneciaries.

Majority o the community was living in tents that had been provided as immediate relie, and because mosthad taken loans rom various organizations and individuals or the crop that was destroyed in the oods, theyare in heavy debts; hence reconstruction has not been an option. Currently more than one amily occupies atent.

A lack o schools and medical acilities in the re-gion result in poor hygiene and lack o educa-

tion and awareness among the society. Primaryschool recently setup in mosque and Art Center(set up by Plan Pakistan) in a tent provides basiceducation to a small minority o the children inthe village.

Livestock and cattle are not enclosed, resulting ina urther deteriorated state o hygiene.

A survey o local materials available in the regionwas also undertaken to see i the Green Karavan-Ghar could be built in material used previouslyor i alternatives could be used. Bamboo andstone were locally available. Mud ound on site

was sent or geological testing. Date Palm anda local branching tree called Pinjr could also beused in place o matting but cost o both mate-rials was higher than those used in the GreenKaravanGhar. Local bamboo matting was in-terwoven giving it more strength than mattingused in Swat. Tis material can be used not onlyor walls but or the roong system as well, sinceSindh has a mild climate no provision needs tobe made or snow load as in the case o SwatGKGs, requiring a lighter supporting structure.

Alteration to Standard Green KaravanGhar wasmade to incorporate a wind catcher to take ad-vantage o the prevailing breeze. Site specica-tions also require that plinth be raised to 2 eet,and since rm soil is not reached till 5 eet, costallocation or excavations and stone masonrymust be increased.

    Project Objectives

As the project has been devised to work as a training model, a week-long workshop was organized betweenthe 21st and 22nd o February 2011. Te workshop was to involve the local community, train local artisans in

the skill o bamboo construction and student volunteers rom dierent institutions. Te local community wasapproached by the local Civil Society Organization, while the artisans were recruited based on their experienceo working on site and level o interest shown in the program. A registration orm was circulated or studentvolunteers and a large number o responses were received. Te aim o the workshop was not only to involve theparticpants but to interact with the community so that change could be brought about in their current livingstandard. raining in the building technology was to go hand in hand with community awarness in hygiene, education and women empowerment.

Te participants o the workshop came rom ve distinct groups. Tese groups were divided equally to ormteams to work together at dierent tasks. Tey are as ollows:
