    Rajasthan's beautiful Pink CityJaipur, was the stronghold of a

    Known as the Pink City because

    of the colour of the stone used

    Founded in AD 1727 by Sawai Jaisingh II,Jaipur the capital of Rajasthan is popularly

    known as the Pink City with broad avenues

    and spacious gardens. The capital of

    Rajasthan, Jaipur is steeped in history and

    The sovereign of amber built jaipur in theeighteenth century. It was also around

    that time that the Mughal Emperor

    Aurangzeb had died and the decline of

    the Mughal Empire had set in. Jai Singh

    had started distancing himself from theaffair of the Mughal Court and he began

    concentrating on building of Amber. His

    search for a safe place for the increasing

    population of Amber resulted in Jaipur,

    This was India's first planned city and a

    brilliant architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharyafrom Bengal was commissioned to plan

    the city. He designed it in accordance

    with ancient Hindu treatise on

    architecture, the Shilpa Shastra

    ROMANCE OF PINK - Jaipur needed a fresh

    coat of paint to welcome its distinguished

    guest the Prince of Wales in 1905-6. The

    contractor inability to supply any other color in

    the required quantity compelled the choice of

    pink shade for its walls. A contractors

    compulsion famed Jaipur to Pink city. Since

    then the PINK color is associated with

    hospitality in Rajput culture.

    Jaipur has a timeless appeal in its colorful

    Tourist Places in Jaipur

    HAWA MAHAL - built in 1799, by Maharaja SawaiPratap Singh, is the most recognizable monument ofJaipur. The 5 storied stunning semi-octagonalmonument having 152 windows with over hanginglatticed balconies is a fine piece of Rajputarchitecture.

    JANTAR MANTAR (Observatory) - built in18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, thehuge masonary instruments were used to studythe movement of constellations and stars in thesky. Enormous sun-dial still provide accurate time,which are subject to daily corrections.

    JALMAHAL - (6 kms) on the way toAmer, this small palace is set in the middle

    of Man Sagar Lake. Renovation around thelake is in progress.

    JAIGARH FORT - (15 kms.) standing ona hilltop, overlooking the palaces and city

    of Amer. The worlds biggest cannon onwheels- the Jai Ban is positioned here, builtduring reign of Maharaja Sawai Jaisingh. Ithas a twenty feet long barrel and pumpedin the cannon for a single shot.

    Dal Batti Churma

    Recognized as a Rajasthan speciality, Dal-batti-churma, is a wholesome Rajasthani meal. Dal,or lentil curry, is served with Bhatti, a roundelof stuffed flour that's baked in a charcoal fireor oven. Choorma is a sweet dish made withflour, jaggery or sugar and ghee.

    Bhatticomes in varieties acts as a substitutefor rotis. You could opt forplain batti, or trythe more exotic masala, dry fruit or missibattis. Battiis made out of wheat, flour, milletor a mix of maize and wheat flour, with loads

    of ghee.

    Mawa Kachori

    A kachori filled with mawa and sugar syrup, this

    delicacy is not to be missed. It is available at all

    sweet shops. In Jaipur, try famous sweet shops such

    as Rawat sweets and Kanji sweets near the bus stand

    and at LMB, Johri Bazar.

    GhewarA deep-fried sweet dish, Ghewaris in greatdemand during festivals such as Gangaurand

    Teej. It comes in varieties such as plain, desighee and mawa. The best shops for this are LMBat Johri Bazar and Rawat Sweets.

    Mirchi BadaSharing prime spot with samosas and kachoris in

    the snack market are MirchiBadas - green chillies

    dunked in besanand deep fried. You can even find

    vendors selling these on makeshift handcarts by

    the roadside.

    Camel Festival

    The Camel Festival is organized by the Department of Tourismof the Rajasthan Government in January every year . The

    festival begins with a colorful procession of bedecked camels

    against the red sandstone backdrop of the Junagarh Fort. Held

    is a tug-of-war contest, best breed competition, camel dance

    and acrobatics among other things. The camels display

    amazing footwork, dancing gracefully to the directions of their

    trainers. Bridal bridles, be jeweled necks, jingling anklets andcamel shadows, cast a spell on the audience. In the evenings,

    is held a traditional rendezvous of renowned artistes and folk

    performers.

    Desert Festival

    This festival is also held in January- February in

    Jaisalmer. For three days, the otherwise barren land ofJaisalmer comes to life and is clustered with hordes of

    colorfully dressed people. Some chosen moments of

    the past and affluent culture are on display backed by

    high pitched music and folk dances. The turban tying

    competition and Mr. Desert contest as also the camel

    races, add to the excitement of the celebrations.

    Elephant Festival

    The festival is held on the eve of Holi in Jaipur and

    has several interesting attractions like elephant

    polo. The festival begins with a procession ofelephants, camels, horses and folk dancers. The

    elephants are decorated to the full with bright

    colours, saddle cloth and heavy jewellery. Female

    elephant are made to wear anklets and a prize is

    given for the most well-decorated elephant. Playing

    Holi on elephant back is one of the major

    attractions.

    Mewar Festival

    This 18 day festival is celebrated to welcome the advent

    of spring and coincides with the festival of Gangaur in

    Udaipur. It is significant for the women of the state as it istime for them to dress in their best. The women gather to

    dress the images of Issar and Gangaur and then carry

    them in a ceremonial procession through different parts

    of the city. The procession ends up at Pichhola Lake

    where the images are transferred to special boats amidst

    singing and festivity. Cultural events are held at the end

    of the festivities and they include songs, dances and adisplay of fireworks. 1111

    Gangaur Fair

    Geld all over Rajasthan, it is the most important fair of the

    state and is observed with fervour and devotion. The idols of

    Issar and gangaur, manifestations of Shiva and Parvati, are

    worshipped by women, particularly by those who are

    unmarred and pray for a consort. Women take out

    procession through the streets carrying images of the divine

    couple. The festival is especially colorful in Jaipur, Udaipurand Mandawa.

    Marwar Festival

    Held in October in Jodhpur, this annual two day

    event attempts to showcase the art and culture of

    the Jodhpur region. It is devoted mainly to singing

    and dancing. Originally known as the Maandfestival, the folk dancers provide a glimpse of the

    days of yore, of battles and valiant and valiant

    heroes who still live on in their songs. Other

    attractions are camel tatoo show and polo. The

    venues are the impressive Umaid Bhavan Palace,

    Mandore and the Mehrangarh fort. 1212

    Rajasthan is called 'The Land Of Colors". In this life of every Rajasthani

    the music and dance are intensely embedded. Rajasthan is famous for

    its tradition dance and folk music. Rajasthani dance are spectacular

    celebration of life and color and it shows the happiness of their people.

    The true heritage of the state lies in its folk life of the ample inhabit

    rural and remote lands. From them echoes the true melodies, which hassoothed the heart of people for generations. After hard work in the

    harsh desert sun and rocky terrain whenever they take time off they let

    themselves go in gay abandon. Each region has its own folk

    entertainment, the dance styles differ as they do the songs, even the

    Gair Ghoomar :

    The popular groomer is the trait dance of the Bhils

    although it is but this dance is associated with the royal

    ladies of Jaipur, who perform it on certain favorableoccasions. The reason for that might be that the Bhils

    and the Jaipur royalty have been close for centuries. The

    persons dance in a form of circle the rhythm started with

    slow to high music. music and increasing gradually.

    Pabuji Ki Phad:

    A 14th century folk hero, Pabuji is revered

    by the Bhopa community. The scroll, which

    is about 10 metres long, highlights the life

    and heroic deed of Pabuji. The Bhopas are

    invited by villagers to perform in their areas

    during times of sickness and misfortune. Theballad is sung by the Bhopa as he plays the

    Ravan - hattha and he is joined by his wife

    who holds a lamp and illuminates the

    relevant portions at appropriate points.

    Puppet Show:

    This dance is perform by the expertPuppeteers plays based. Displaying his

    skill in making the puppets' act and

    dance, the puppeteer is accompanied

    by a woman, usually his wife, who

    plays the dholak, or drum and singsthe ballad.
