THANK YOU TO ALL INVOLVED WITH THE YEAR 12 FORMAL

The Year 12 Formal Dinner was held on Monday 18 November at Mingara Recreation Club. This annual event is a particularly special evening for not only the students and their families, but also for the teaching staff who have built such close bonds with their students over the last six years. It is an evening where we celebrate a significant rite of passage where we formally say that 13 years of schooling are over and a new chapter begins for each of our Year 12 students. WELCOME TO OUR LEADERS FOR 2014 I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our student leadership body for 2014 – our School Captains, Vice Captains, Prefects, Student Representative Council and House Captains. The variety of school leaders we have at Henry Kendall High work to support the school in many ways: from volunteering for community service, fundraising for charity, dealing with individual student issues, representing the school at special events, raising ideas with the teaching staff and executive, and generally promoting all the positive aspects of this great school. There are a number of strong qualities that are evident in our SRC leaders of 2014. They have the belief that they can make a difference. They participate in activities with willingness and enthusiasm. They consistently model positive behaviour and set an example - wearing the correct uniform, treating people with respect, encouraging others to behave appropriately, doing their best and enjoying school. And they are proud of their school. These qualities will stand them in good stead to undertake their duties. I congratulate our 26 SRC leaders and have every faith in the positive impact they will have through 2014.

HARD WORK BEHIND THE SCENES 2013 has seen significant work undertaken by Years 7 & 9 teaching staff ‘behind the scenes’ to prepare for the introduction of the Australian Curriculum through new NSW syllabus in Year 9 English, Mathematics, History and Science; and for our school this includes Middle School. Developing our readiness for the new curriculum has involved not only rewriting our teaching and learning programs from scratch, but evaluating our approaches towards the needs of 21

st century learners. This has involved an

evaluation of teaching approaches towards skill building as being as important as content; skills such as critical and creative thinking, ethical understanding, and intercultural understanding as well as foundation skills such as literacy, numeracy and technological capabilities. Equally our focus now extends to building understandings in our students around such areas as civics and citizenship, difference and diversity, and work and enterprise. Specific focus areas now include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and sustainability. Gaining an in-depth understanding of these changes and transforming them into learning experiences has been a challenge and has involved extensive staff professional learning. These skills, understandings and focus areas are interwoven with content to produce a dynamic approach to classroom practice and exciting new opportunities for our students. The new teaching programs will be introduced into Years 7 and 9 in 2014, and subsequently into Years 8 and 10 in 2015. I congratulate the staff on their hard work throughout 2013 in rising to the challenges of the new curriculum, work that our students will be challenged, excited and engaged by in 2014.

UPDATE ON BUILDING WORKS The other major and exciting event for 2014 will be the relocation of Gosford Public School onto the Henry Kendall site. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome John Anderson as the new Principal of Gosford Public School. John brings with him a wealth of experience and a shared outlook as to the value of working together with Henry Kendall and Point Clare Public to sustain and further build our vibrant learning community. I also acknowledge the career and commitment of Alan Wort as retiring Principal of Gosford Public, and his invaluable commitment to the Gosford Learning Community. The primary school buildings are progressing well, and there are only a couple of building projects to be completed in the remodelling of the high school. With the program being on schedule, Gosford Public is due to move at the end of Term One, ready to begin their exciting new chapter at the start of Term Two. Obviously bringing the two schools together on a shared site will bring about some logistical challenges to work through, and planning towards these is well underway. Importantly, John and I share a philosophy about the outcomes and shared opportunities the relocation brings and these will remain our focus, as, along with Point Clare, we ensure that opportunities and learning for our students are at the centre of all we do.

2013 CONCLUDES AND 2014 BEGINS There were a number of very special functions the school has conducted to conclude 2013:

o Year 10 Experience Week from 2 – 6 December. o Year 10 Celebration Dinner at the Japanese Gardens East Gosford, Monday 9 December from 6.00pm-10.00pm. o Annual Presentation Evening for Thursday 12 December 2013 in the School Hall from 7.00pm.

School concluded for students this year on Wednesday 18 December and for staff on Friday 20 December 2013 and arrangements for the start of 2014 are:

o Tuesday 28 January 2014 School Development Day (no students attend school on this day). o Wednesday 29 January 2014 school resumes for Years 7, 11 & 12. o Thursday 30 January 2014 school resumes for Years 8, 9 & 10.

THANK YOU TO ALL STAFF AT HKHS FOR THEIR HARD WORK DURING 2013 As Christmas rapidly approaches, I would like to congratulate the staff and students of Henry Kendall High for their hard work throughout a busy and productive year. Throughout 2013 Henry Kendall High School has achieved a wide range of success in academic, cultural and sporting endeavours, and these accomplishments have come from the creation of a ‘culture of success’, one in which this school’s community is rightly proud. At Henry Kendall High School success has developed from the significant opportunities that are provided to students, the desire to strive for and achieve ones ‘personal best’, and the enthusiasm in which our students both participate and rise to a challenge. In 2013 this ‘culture of success’ is something that is in evidence on many levels. For some it has provided outstanding results in the highest competitions in the state, for others it provides the

Page 3: HENRY KENDALL HIGH SCHOOL€¦ · Throughout 2013 Henry Kendall High School has achieved a wide range of success in academic, cultural and sporting endeavours, and these accomplishments

ability to achieve personal milestones, and for others it provides the need to ‘have a go’. No matter what level it is at, this ‘culture of success’ is one of the real strengths behind Henry Kendall High School. I would like to wish all students and families an industrious end to the year, a safe and relaxing Christmas, and a fruitful 2014. Mr Andrew Backhouse - Principal

Deputy Principal Years 8, 10 & 12 2013 has been an outstanding year and special congratulations to all our students, staff and families for a fulfilling year. Final Farewell to Year 12 2013

This term we farewelled our Year 12 - a fantastic group of young adults. We wish Year 12 all the best in their journey beyond HKHS and look forward to sharing their results next week. Special thanks is to be shared with Ms Selsby for her tireless efforts in supporting Year 12 this year. Welcome to Year 7 2014

Welcome to the Henry Kendall High School family! On Wednesday 4 December our incoming Year 7 group attended our Orientation Day. Students participated in a wonderful day, meeting their new teachers and peers and getting to know their new school. It was fantastic to see so many parents and carers here, to not only support their children, but to familiarise themselves with our school culture. All students in attendance received a show bag of goodies that included a DVD of what to expect at HKHS, as well as a Year 7 handbook. The day was extremely busy with a full program of activities designed to promote student interaction and introductions to staff. Thank you to our partner schools for supporting the students and HKHS. We look forward to welcoming Year 7 on Wednesday

29 January 2014.

YEAR 10 EXPERIENCE WEEK A HUGE SUCCESS HKHS values the importance of transitioning from Stage 5 into Stage 6, i.e. the transition from junior school to senior school. This year the school introduced an Experience Week which offered students programs in All My Own Work, safe driving, goal setting, team building excursion to Tree Tops, taster lessons for their preliminary year and an excursion to the Jewish Museum. The week finished with a Celebration Dinner held at the Japanese Gardens. Thank you to the following people for supporting the Year 10 week: Mrs Bailey, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Cooper, Mr Clift, Senior Constable Lynch, Mr Cox, Mr Newman, Mr Harrison, all staff on the Taster lessons and Mrs Wearne. Congratulations to Year 10 and we look forward to working with you in your move to Stage 6.

TRANSITION PROGRAMS ACROSS THE SCHOOL

Year 7 into Year 8 Year 7 are preparing for transition into Year 8. This has involved more classes held in various classrooms around the school, planning for Year 8 curriculum with the COGS units. Year 8 into Year 9 and Year 9 into Year 10

Year 8 have just received their elective choices for Year 9 and are beginning to look at the Stage 5 curriculum for next year. Moving from Stage 4 into Stage 5 is usually an exciting time as students begin to have more of a say over the curriculum they would like to experiment with, and begin the process of career pathway planning. Year 10 have chosen their second 100 hour course and are about to start their Careers class next year. An exciting development in 2014 includes the introduction of a new Stage 5 Hospitality course for Year 10 students. It is a time when the students begin to really investigate possible pathways after school and early next year begin the task of investigating options for study in Year 11. There will be Information Evenings next year that will begin the process and we look forward to seeing you there. Lastly, thank you to all families for your support of our fabulous school in 2013. I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas with your families and look forward to more success with our Henry Kendall family in 2014, Ms Donna Loveridge –Deputy Principal

Deputy Principal Years 7, 9 & 11 Congratulations to all students for their individual successes throughout 2013. From high level academic or sporting success to personal improvement and growth, all success should be duly recognised. I have been very impressed with the settled nature of the school and the mature, friendly and respectful way almost all students interact with each other, from Year 7 to Year 10, sharing soccer games with each other, and including Support Unit students, during breaks on the oval, to the genuine affection and applause at rollcall assemblies for birthday calls and congratulations to those succeeding in sport and other activities. I really believe we will rise to even greater things in the future, from witnessing how the entire school community works together on a daily basis.

CHANGE IN AFTERNOON BUS PICK UPS IN 2014 From the first day back in 2014, all school buses that formerly stopped at the end of the day in Faunce St will now stop at the lower gate in Batley St. This means that all students will assemble on the new basketball courts and will be directed onto buses by supervising staff. Only students with prior permission (injuries etc) will be allowed to stand outside the gate. Seniors will again be allowed to load first, from the covered area adjacent to the gate. Students being picked up by car need to congregate in the appropriate areas in Faunce St. rather than Batley St. The new bus arrangements will help to ease traffic congestion in Faunce Street, especially when Gosford Public School moves to their new site in Term 2.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS ENJOYED OVERNIGHT STUDY TRIP TO CANBERRA Students from the 9/10 class travelled to the Nation’s Capital, Canberra In Week 8 for a study trip which complimented their studies on Government and Civics. Sights included the National Museum of Australia where the students had an interactive iPad tour and investigation game. The Royal Australian Mint was a favourite stop for many of the students. Unfortunately, they were not giving any free samples on the day we visited. Another afternoon was spent at the Australian War Memorial where an extensive tour was finished with the students witnessing the Last Post being played and a wreath laying service that included our school. Our student behaviour at this and every venue was simply stunning. A visit

and tour of Parliament House was completed with a role play with our students introducing a bill in the house of Representatives, with a member of our class government crossing the floor the Bill was defeated and the room broke into spontaneous applause. A quick visit to Questacon, Telstra Tower at Black Mountain, The National Capital Exhibition and Australian Electoral Commission topped off a great study trip. The school would also like to note that the cost of the trip was kept down due to funding provided by the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) scheme. Thank you to all staff involved in this Special Education excursion.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE AT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS On Thursday 5 December 30 students and staff from the HKHS Support Unit travelled to Newcastle to be spectators at The Asia Pacific Games. We had a great interest in the games as two of our Henry Kendall High School students were competing. Mitchell Carlin in Swimming and Alexander Shepherd in Athletics. Wheeling and Able provided special transport and we had the assistance of volunteer drivers, Mr Joe Said and Mr Paul Standen. One bus took students to Newcastle University Forum to see Aquatics and Badminton. The other bus

travelled to Glendale to view the Athletics. Some of our group travelled to Broadmeadow by train and were able to watch Basketball and Table Tennis. It really was a great opportunity to see a world class event. Athletes with disabilities from 30 different countries were competing. It was great seeing athletes taking part in the games, doing their best and achieving so much. The positive team spirit we saw was fantastic and perhaps will inspire our students to strive to reach new goals.

GIRRAKOOL PRESENTATION MORNING For many years, students and staff from Girrakool School have assisted the Henry Kendall Support Unit Sports Program. Each Tuesday, the young men help our students with disabilities take part in the weekly sports activities. They assist us at Ten Pin Bowling, Lawn Bowls, Swimming, Kite Flying, Walks and Gym activities. While their efforts help us run a varied program, it is also an opportunity for the young men to take part in valuable community service. On Wednesday 18 December Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Smith and four students from the Support Unit attended the annual presentation morning at Girrakool School. This is always a very special event as we see the young men receive awards for their studies and other activities. We are usually also entertained with some great music and dance items. We are able to see some of their art works and enjoy some delicious refreshments. This program is an example of a wonderful community partnership. We look forward to it continuing in the future. Mr Peter Yates – Head Teacher, Special Education Unit

CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS

MUSIC It has been another wonderful year for Music with a range of performance opportunities, competitions and auditions being undertaken by our students. Here are some of the recent highlights:

HK'S GOT TALENT During Term 4 Week 7 we ran another hugely successful edition of HK's Got Talent in the MPC. While Music was definitely a very popular talent of choice for the competitors, we also had dancers and even a Karate demonstration that saw Mr Cox flipped on to his back by Taryn Middleton of Year 7. A big congratulations to the band 'Them' consisting of Nico Falzarano (Year 8), Thomas Josephs (Year 8), Sean Dwyer (Year 10) and Joseph Jesus (Year 10) who won the competition with a performance of an original composition (you can check out Them's upcoming EP on their Facebook page). We'd also like to acknowledge all of the competitors for the level of preparation and quality of performance demonstrated, especially the band 'Get Staffed' featuring members of the HK Staff performing the Foo Fighters 'Learn to Fly' - a most enjoyable performance. We look forward to running this excellent event again in 2014! Star Struck

Star Struck is a performing arts extravaganza presented by the Hunter area of the NSW Department of Education and Communities. It is held annually at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre featuring singers, dancers, actors and musicians from the entire Hunter and Central Coast region. Mr Clift has been the Assistant Musical Director of this show a number of times and returns again in 2014 as part of the Music Team. Round 1 Featured Vocalist auditions were held during October and we are very proud of the following students who were selected to progress through to Round 2 auditions on 13 and 14 of December 2013: Matt Callaghan, Sarra Dreha, Amber McAlpine, Rachel McAndrew and Bree Wardrop. For more information about this wonderful show, or to find out about how you can support Star Struck, go to www.starstruck.schools.nsw.edu.au/home

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEARS 9, 10 & 11 MUSIC Year 9 Music

Students in Mr Jarvis' Year 9 Elective Music class have been busy working on unique arrangements of existing songs and learning how to write their own pop songs. This has been a very successful activity and there have been some outstanding results.

Year 10 Music

Students in Mr Clift's Year 10 Elective Music class have just finished a songwriting activity as well, focussing on using popular chord progressions such as the '1950s Doo-Wop' and the 'Four Chord Song' progression. The results of this activity ranged from hilariously brilliant (thanks to some very clever lyric writing) to sublime. Year 11 Music

Students in Mr Clift's Year 11 Music Class (or "Year 12" as they now like to be called) are busy getting ready for their final year of school Music education. They have just completed their first HSC assessment - a two part task requiring them to not only perform a piece of music from the 20th or 21st Century, but also to present a Viva Voce (a prepared conversation with audio examples) on a topic of their own choice. It has been a busy time of year for these students and they rose to the challenge brilliantly. The next focus will be locking down a good selection of potential performance pieces to begin preparing for their HSC exams.

Page 7: HENRY KENDALL HIGH SCHOOL€¦ · Throughout 2013 Henry Kendall High School has achieved a wide range of success in academic, cultural and sporting endeavours, and these accomplishments

The Sunburns

The Sunburns are a band featuring four of our Year 10 students: Nick Lappan, Sean Dwyer, Joe Jesus and Bryce Crampton. These guys have been performing together now for a number of years and have finally settled on a great band name and line up - and this is certainly paying off for the boys who were recently booked to play at The Metrodome's Coast Rock Riot gig - an outstanding achievement. You can 'Like' The Sunburns on Facebook to follow all their upcoming gigs and check out demo recordings. Farewell Mr Jarvis

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to one of the most talented musicians and engaging teachers we've ever met. Mr Ben Jarvis has been part of the Henry Kendall CAPA family for the last two years and was snapped up by St Peters at Tuggerah with the offer of full-time work for 2014 and beyond. Ben's humour, wit, enthusiasm and rapport with the students and staff will be sorely missed at HK, but we wish him all the best as he begins the next chapter of his teaching career. We live in hope that one day we can lure him back to the Public Education system. Good luck Ben...don't be a stranger. Welcome Mr Mellish

On the flipside, we'd like to welcome Mr Michael Mellish to the CAPA Department. Michael is a man of many talents. He has spent a lot of his time here at HK working in the PE and TAS departments, but it is a little known fact that he is also a very keen musician (even makes his own unique guitars!) and an exceptionally talented general educator. Mr Mellish will be teaching Yr7, 8 and 9 Music in 2014 and will be a huge benefit to the CAPA faculty.

CAPA Facebook Page

The CAPA Facebook page has been a huge success throughout 2013 and we encourage all parents and students to 'Like' this page in order to stay informed about everything happening in the HK CAPA faculty including competitions, galleries, auditions, online resources and general cool ideas that relate

Mr Clift has been working with the Year 10 Drama students to write, perform and record their own radio plays. Two different plays have been written and recorded. Sound effects were added and editing and mixing is about to take place. It has been a challenging, but very exciting project and we hope to post the two recordings up on Soundcloud and Facebook once mixing is complete. Year 9 Drama - Clowning

Mrs Cooper's Year 9 Drama students are a bunch of clowns...literally! These enthusiastic students have been learning the fine art of clowning around, including making balloon animals, face painting, juggling, mime and physical theatre. They have been entertaining other students with their wonderful skills and have worked really hard to overcome challenges along the way. They will hopefully be visiting the partner primary schools from the Gosford City Learning Community to put on performances and clowning workshops with those students.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN VISUAL ARTS Visual Arts

Most of 2013 Year 12 Artworks and Photographs have been collected. Thank you for such a prompt response to help create storage space for the new Year 12. Years 7 and 8 have all completed the Portraits topic culminating in some great Crazy Faces paintings that draw on Picasso's 'Weeping Woman' for inspiration. They investigated some sophisticated painting techniques, considering the arrangement and effect of colours, texturing with impasto and the resolution of their artworks. They are now moving into digital manipulation skills on Adobe Photoshop or some basic

ceramic skills. Year 9 have completed some amazing expressive paintings and are also starting to use clay to build small sculptures. Year 10 have submitted their Body of Work pieces with some great results. Of note are the digitally drawn portraits by Alice Wang and the paintings by Erica Monaghan, Stephanie Robertson and Chutharat Somsa. Our Year 10 boys explored making ceramic sculptures of waves and some cool graffiti works. The new Year 12 are preparing their first Body of Work assessment task with a presentation of their ideas and plans for their practical work with a started piece included. We are very excited about the ideas and

plans we are seeing with the new Year 12 already. Ms Skerritt is preparing submissions for the Central Vision exhibition with is shown at the Gosford Regional Gallery every February, and organised the excursion to the Sculptures by the Sea at Bondi which was a great success. She has also taken Year 12 to the NSW Art Gallery for a HSC Study day on Tues 26 November. Thank you Ms Skerritt for all of the extra curricula activities that you have organised for the CAPA Department.

Photography - Year 9 have just finished a topic on Trick Photography with some fun results, and are now exploring artistic

ideas of appropriation for our next interesting topic. Year 10 have finalised their Body of Works with Erica Monaghan and Stephanie Robertson's of particular note. It is great to see our students produce such artistic photographs. Mr Damien Clift - Head Teacher CAPA

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

GOOD BYE YEAR 7 2013 Middle School students have had an enterprising and highly rewarding year. Teachers would like to thank students for all their hard work during the year and we wish them every success in Year 8 in 2014. Middle School teachers feel privileged that we begin your secondary high school journey with you and we know that you will achieve great things in the future. Our year together was brought to an end with an amazing Rewards Day at Luna Park this year. I would like to Year 7 for their excellent behaviour on the day.

HELLO YEAR 7 2014 We would like to welcome our new Year 7 to the Henry Kendall High School family and to Middle School in 2014. Teachers were impressed with students’ behaviour and focus during Orientation Day and we look forward to a busy and productive year. Middle School begins with a transition program called the “The First Three Days”. It is a comprehensive program that prepares Year 7 for the year ahead and will allay any of those first day nerves. Thank you to the amazing teachers that have been part of the Middle School Faculty in 2013. Special thanks to Mr Paul Carter, Mrs Ann Collard, Mr Kent Silver, Ms Jennifer Tebb and Mrs Bev Watsford for the wealth of talent and experience you bring to the classroom, as well as your unwavering commitment to the Middle School ethos at Henry Kendall High School.

YOUNG ACHIEVERS ENJOY SURVIVAL DAY AT KINCUMBA MOUNTAIN Year 7 Young Achievers have been working out how to survive against the odds as part of their Special Interesting Project (SIP) IN Term 4. Students took the concept of “survival” and engaged in a range of activities across key learning areas. Students studied how to survive in the desert and rainforest environments in Geography, completed work in the non-fiction text “Crash – The Search for the Stinson” in English, fine-tuned their knowledge of direction and bearings in Mathematics and designed brochures in Technology. Study culminated in Survival

Day held on Kincumba Mountain on Wednesday 11 December. Students completed a challenging orienteering course develop by Mr Harrison, took part in first aid scenarios and completed the tent erection speed challenge. It was a wonderful end to a highly engaging and academically challenging SIP. Thanks to Mr Mellish, Mrs McTeigue and Mr Guyot for your participation on the day. Huge thanks to Mr Harrison for your passion for this unit and organisation on the day. It has been a wonderful privilege to teach the Year 7 Young Achievers Program in 2013. I have been amazed by the engagement and commitment to learning demonstrated by students this year. I wish you all the very best in 2014. The new year will bring exciting academic challenges and I am very confident you will continue to meet them.

Year 8 Japanese (Young Achievers) – Ellise Beasley Year 7 Japanese (Young Achievers) – Emily Hayhurst

This year brings to a successful conclusion our partnership with Elderslie High School and the Connected Classroom Program. For the past few years, Henry Kendall High School has used this technology to teach HSC and Preliminary Japanese to students across both schools. I wish to thank Ms Jean Laffan for her tireless enthusiasm, expertise and innovation. Our model of program delivery was considered best practice and due to the vast repertoire of skills that Ms Laffan brings to the classroom and the passion of our students for languages in the senior school. Year 8 students have had a busy and productive Term 4. Ms Laffan has been amazed by the standard of work completed this term. The children’s French story books were beautifully written and illustrated. We wish all the best for Christmas and 2014. Mr Mark Macdonald Head Teacher – Teaching and Learning, Middle School and Languages

YEAR 9 REPORT 2013 has been a wonderful year for Year 9. It has been pleasing to see so many students maturing and paying attention to their studies. The competition among the top academic achievers can be seen in their excellent reports. Great progress has also been seen in the reports of most other students. The students who were involved in Peer Support training were all terrific and all were chosen as leaders. They have already shown their talents when supporting Year 6 on their Orientation Day and some supported Year 7 when they went to Luna Park (lucky them!) We have been fortunate to be chosen as a school to have i-Track for Year 10 next year. This is a program run by The Smith Family and involves students being mentored by professionals in a range of businesses and corporations. It is an 18 week course that will run for an hour after school. I look forward to providing more information in the new year. Have a happy, safe holiday and best wishes for 2014. Ms Gae Hobson – Year 9 Adviser

YEAR 10 & YEAR 12 EXTENSION HISTORY VISIT THE JEWISH MUSEUM Below is a recount of the excursion to The Jewish Museum on Friday 6 December by Bryce Crampton and Nick Lappan (Year 10): Below are some photos taken on the day:

On Friday 6 December, Year 10 and Year 12 Extension History class endeavoured on a journey down to Sydney’s Jewish Museum. We met a Holocaust survivor named Eddie who shared his experiences with us, such as when he lived in a cave for 5 months, drinking poisoned water from a nearby creek, not realising that the war had ended. We then ventured on a guided tour through the museum where we learnt about the Jewish Culture. We also visited the Children’s Memorial which brought a tear to everybody’s eye. After leaving the museum we went to a very expensive café whilst we waited for the buses to bring us home. The Jewish Museum was a great place to visit as it helped us learn about the Jewish culture and meet a Holocaust survivor.

By Bryce Crampton & Nick Lappan

Left: Courtney Muir and Chantelle Masters thanking our Holocaust survivor Eddie for coming in to speak to us about his experiences in the death camp, Auschwitz. Eddie’s most important message to the Year 10 & 11 students was to appreciate life and take all opportunities afforded to them.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM STUDENT SERVICES

KEEPING LINES OF COMMUNICATION OPEN BETWEEN HOME & SCHOOL At HKHS we pride ourselves on keeping the lines of communication between home and school wide open. Given we are starting a new school year, could I encourage you all to please check that the school has been informed if there has been a change in your home address, postal address, phone numbers and, really importantly, that your emergency contact details are current and correct. If you are unsure of what is on the system, then please feel free to call the school on 4325 2110 and we can send home a confirmation of address sheet or you can complete one over the phone. As your children prepare to return or start high school I would like to remind all our families and inform all our new ones of two support structures we have to support your children at school.

Financial Assistance

It is that testing time for all families financially. However, some families are experiencing even more difficulty. Financial support is available to help eligible families with school related costs. The Student Assistance Scheme provides financial assistance to eligible families for school related expenses. Contact us to arrange a confidential discussion with the Principal. There is more information about support systems on our school website if you are interested. Health Care News

Promoting health, supporting student health care needs and reducing health risks are important to everyone at our school. If your child is being prescribed medication that needs to be taken during the day, please inform us so that arrangements can be made for the medication to be administered. Please read the important information about prescribed medications at school on our school website if our team hasn’t already spoken to you. If your child has been diagnosed with an allergy or allergies, it is important that you tell the Principal as soon as you become aware of it, or if your child's allergy changes. If your child is diagnosed at risk of an anaphylactic reaction an individual health care plan is developed that includes strategies to minimise the risk of a severe allergic reaction. Managing complex health needs

An Individual Health Care Plan is developed for each student with complex health needs. The plan supports students with severe asthma, type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, anaphylaxis and those at risk of an emergency or requiring the administration of specific health care procedures.

NORTA NORTA PROGRAM A GREAT SUCCESS, LOOKING FORWARD TO 2014 This year the Norta Norta program for Indigenous students has had a great deal of success. Indigenous students have been provided with in-class support where requested by either the student, parents/carers or teachers. Students have also received support with their assignments in the Student Services Hub. The Norta Norta tutor also assisted students in applications for Aboriginal education scholarships, university applications and the organising of university experiences for students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Year 12 student, Jackson Parkes received a $1000 Aboriginal education scholarship that paid for his Metals and Engineering major work, a rugby scrum machine. This project saw Jackson achieve the highest honour for Metals and Engineering by an Indigenous student in New South Wales and he received an award from the University of Wollongong. In addition, Jackson successfully applied for UNSW Winter School for Indigenous students and was one of just 150 students selected to participate. During the week long program he participated in education workshops to gain an insight into university life. He has since applied to UNSW for a Bachelor of Arts and has been offered a place in the course starting in 2014. Tayla Shepherd in Year 10 also received a $1000 Aboriginal Education Scholarship. Recently, Tayla has applied for a traineeship with Central Coast Health which will provide her with work experience, whilst completing a Certificate III in Business. If successful at interview, Tayla will complete the traineeship one day a week throughout Years 11 and 12 with the support of Norta Norta tutoring at school. We wish he the best of luck at interview. We look forward to providing all these opportunities and more to Indigenous students again in 2014 as part of the program. Genevieve Henry – Learning & Support Teacher/Norta Norta Tutor

I've had a great year as part of the Student Services Team. In the role of Learning and Support Teacher, I have run individual literacy support programs, numeracy groups and been in an out of many classes with students with additional learning needs. I'm off on maternity leave at the start of next year and look forward to rejoining the team later in 2014. Genevieve Henry will be in my position so I know my students are in great hands! Happy Holidays! Kelly Doyle – Learning & Support Teacher

SPORT REPORT

HENRY KENDALL HIGH STUDENTS EXCEL ACROSS ALL SPORTING ARENAS Congratulations to all of the Henry Kendall High School students who have participated in sporting activities in 2013. We have had some great success both with teams and individually. In particular, I’d like to congratulate Dan Rogers who will received a Sydney North Regional Blue for Baseball in the New Year and both Girls Futsal Teams, who were State Champions (see picture right). All of you who participated in swimming, cross country, athletics and team sports have played a part in maintaining our high standards, not only in achievement, but more importantly, in how we conduct ourselves and our sportsmanship for which we have received many compliments from our rival players and coaches. Looking forward to a great sporting 2014.

PLEASE MAKE YOUR SPORT SELECTIONS EARLY SO YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED Term 1 Sport selections should have already taken place. Please talk to your child about their sport, and if they haven’t handed their note to the front office, they must do this by the first Friday they return to school. If you are buying shoes for sport in the holidays, then please ensure they are sport shoes with good grip and foot support. A copy of the sport note is on pages 19 & 20 of this newsletter.

TERM 1 2014 SPORTING EVENTS The first event on the school sporting calendar is the School Swimming Carnival on Monday 17 February at Gosford Pool. Students will receive information notes early in the new school year. Another event that is very early is the All Schools Triathlon held at Penrith. MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM INTERACT! The Henry Kendall High Interact Club would like to express a big thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. It has been a busy year of BBQs, cake stalls, food drives and other fundraisers. As a result, we have been able to donate many greatly needed items to Coast Shelter, and make donations of $400 to the Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal, $400 to Oasis Youth Off the Streets and $400 to the New Hope Community School and Orphanage in Cambodia. This wouldn't be possible without the hard work of our committee and. of course, the generosity of our school community. We thank you all. We look forward to another busy year of exciting projects and fundraising in 2014. Ms Danielle Bath – Interact Coordinator

WEST GOSFORD PROBUS GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARDS

Congratulations to Joseph Jesus and Lauren Riley who were awarded the 2013 Good Citizenship Awards from the West Gosford Probus Club. Both students were praised for their involvement in whole school activities and their willingness to support and encourage their peers. Lauren and Joseph are both excellent members of our school community and are worthy recipients of this prestigious award. Congratulations to both! Mrs Melanie Bailey – Year 10 Adviser

YEAR 10 HAVE A GREAT TIME AT EXPERIENCE WEEK - TREETOPS EXCURSION Week 9 was Experience Week for Year 10. This was the first of its kind and the students had various sessions regarding the transition from junior to senior schooling. They also attended a team building day at Treetops which was a lot of fun for all involved. Once again they proved to be well behaved and cooperative, even after one of the buses got lost and we arrived half an hour later than the other bus, which left after us! Well done to Year 10 who all worked well together, encouraging each other to challenge their fears on the ropes. Congratulations Year 10!

AMAZING WORKS FROM YEAR 9 & 10 ELECTIVE HISTORY

Students in our Elective History class have completed a number of challenging and demanding assessments throughout the year. Their last task was to answer the question “Why History?” Student responses included pictures, poems, prezi presentations, posters, diaries and essays. All presentations were of exceptional merit and the class is commended for their efforts.

LIONS YOUTH OF THE YEAR 2014 The Lions Youth of the Year quest is a project of the combined Lions Clubs and is supported by the National Australia Bank, to select an outstanding youth to be an ambassador and travel overseas. The quest is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at an age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education. The following five students took up the challenge at various Lions Clubs: Laura Kostalas, Megan Alexander, Trinity Carson, Matthew Callaghan and Tahmyna Khoshnoud-Rad. Megan and Tahmyna were both able to make it through to the next round which will be held in March next year. They all represented the school with distinction and we congratulate them all for their efforts.

MAX POTENTIAL - http://max-potential.com.au The Max Potential project offers 22 weeks of personal leadership development, including coaching, to young leaders from schools, and the community, to help them maximise their potential during the final years at school, and beyond. It also encourages students to focus on the local community and ways that they can work to improve it. In 2013 our school was fortunate to have three students receive this scholarship opportunity. It is with great pleasure that for 2014 we can confirm the following students have also received scholarships.

Natalie Smith, Jessica De Almeida E Silva, Ashleigh Arkell and Chloe Bartlett. Congratulations girls! Mr David Ardley

REECE JONES’ RECOUNT OF HIS KOKODA TRACK EXPERIENCE You cannot just simply breakdown and decipher in mere words the Kokoda Track or what my experience walking along the track

was actually like. It is far too great for any one person to tell their story and another to understand. It was long, hot and tiring, although when I think of the track, none of these things are the first to come to mind. Every part of the track was a masterpiece created by the earth. The adrenaline from walking over a six metre drop above rapids with only a single log to balance on as you scrambled across. It was this as well as the laughter and the close bonds I made with extraordinary individuals, that I remember from my experience. Whilst I was walking the track I had periods of solitude and silence, placing one foot in front of the other. These were times to reflect on what it must have been like back in 1942. I had previously read that, as the Japanese swept across the Pacific, they were met on the Kokoda Track by a handful of raw troops, mainly boys in their teens, unskilled in jungle warfare and outnumbered about four to one. Pondering the effort of surviving the jungle, let alone fighting for your life can only leave respect and gratitude for these young people. I now see that before I left for Kokoda I was going for selfish reasons. I really wanted to do the Kokoda Track for the physical challenge. Along the track my motivation changed entirely and I was no longer doing it for myself. I realise now that I was doing it for those young men who were sent into battle with little training and poor equipment. My awareness grew for these those who showed outstanding mateship, courage, sacrifice and endurance. Along the track we were told stories of particular Diggers who showed extraordinary courage. Courage struck me as I listened to the poems read at the dawn service. At Isurava, before my eyes, the scenery changed from a lush rainforest to a mud pile filled with corpses and screaming men. I was picturing the battle for Isuvara as the men of the 39th attempted to make a stand and hold the enemy forces back. My pitiful words of complaint about how high the mountains were, how tired I was or how hungry I may have been, left me embarrassed when I dwelt on the experience of these young men fighting along the Kokoda Track. Lest we forget. Reece Jones

EUROPE 2014

All continues to go well with the organisation for our trip to Europe in April 2014. There are now 22 people attending and as part of our preparation all the students have completed research on Australia’s involvement in the Battle of Fromelles. This battle was the first major engagement of Australian forces of the Western Front. Each student has reviewed the background of a fallen soldier who they will be able to visit while we tour the battlefield cemeteries. We will be having a trivia night during Term 1 next year and we would like to thank the following business for their generous support. Hoyts Erina, Bateau Bay Tenpin Bowl, Somersby Springs Water, Anytime Fitness, Chapman & Frazer Real Estate, Black Belt Martial Arts, Five Star Swim Schools, Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park, Diggers @ The Entrance, Top Bookshop, Mark’s Fresh Fruit and Veg and Kempo Karate

HENRY KENDALL HIGH SCHOOL

Years 8 – 10 (2014) Sport Term 1, 2014

(4 February 2014 – 29 April 2014)

Tuesday afternoon sport is a compulsory, timetabled opportunity for students to further develop their movement related skills in a physically active environment. Henry Kendall High School offers a variety of sporting and recreational activities to enable students to meet the mandatory requirements for sport as set out by the NSW Department of Education and Training.

Please note that Term 1 sport will start Week 2 and will continue for 11 weeks until Week 1, Term 2 2014 Payments open Monday 9 December 2013 and close Friday 31 January 2014.

(PLEASE NOTE – AFTER THIS DATE STUDENTS WILL NEED TO CHOOSE A NON-COST SPORT.

Please read carefully and have your child select one sport. Sign the permission note and have your child return the note (with payment if applicable) to the Front Office. Credit card facilities

are available. Those students who pay first will have priority for the sports that have limited spaces. All sport lists will be finalised in Week 2 of Term 1. Once the lists are finalised, there will be NO changes. Any student who does not make a selection will be placed on a sport at the discretion of the sports organiser. If not enough students select a particular sport, that sport will not run. All students are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen during outdoor activities and bring their own water bottle. No refunds will be given for withdrawal from sport for poor behaviour, if the student is absent, or if the student does not attend

their allocated sport. All students will wear the correct HKHS sports uniform. Students may wear this to school all day if they choose. If for any reason

this is not possible a note must be supplied and an appropriate change of clothes brought instead. Students who report to school ill or injured on Tuesdays and bring a note of explanation will complete supervised work in a

classroom. Students who do not bring their sports gear or who miss the bus will complete supervised written work in and have their parents

notified. Pass out notes must be handed in at the Front Office on Monday and an official DET pass out will be issued to your child on

Tuesday at recess. Parents, caregivers and students should realise that sport is a mandatory requirement for the completion of the School

Certificate and that attendance is compulsory. Your cooperation is always appreciated.
