Hemelite and TopcreteContinuous product

development has led to an

extensive range of Hemelite

lightweight and Topcrete dense

aggregate blocks, which are

supplied from a network of

production units located

throughout the country.

Hemelite lightweight aggregate

blocks are suitable for use in

walls above and below ground

and in block and beam floors.

They have a proven high level of

technical performance.

Topcrete dense aggregate blocks

are extremely durable and robust

and have excellent loadbearing

and sound insulation properties.

Recent developments have seen

the introduction of Multicore

and Midi blocks as well as RPW

party wall blocks. These products

have been designed to make

them convenient to handle on

site, whilst retaining their

excellent technical properties.

The benefits of ease of handling

will assist contractors and

specifiers in meeting the

obligations of the Construction

(Design and Management)

Regulations.

Both Hemelite and Topcrete are

produced in solid, hollow or

cellular units and are available in

Standard texture and close

textured Paint Quality grades.

AuthorityHemelite and Topcrete products

are BSI Kitemarked to BS EN

771-3 and are manufactured

under a Quality System

complying with BS EN ISO 9001.

They conform to the ‘Special

Category of Manufacturing

Control’ requirements specified

in BS 5628-1.

EnvironmentalAll Topblock manufacturing

plants operate an environmental

management system conforming

to ISO:14001. All sites are

independently assessed for

compliance by BSI.

Appearance Standard grade blocks are light

to dark grey and have a textured

surface suitable for plastering

or rendering.

Paint Quality grade blocks are

light to dark grey and have a

close textured surface. The

colour and texture of blocks may

differ according to factory of

origin. Samples are available

on request.

Working withHemelite and TopcreteTopblock aggregate blocks have

excellent working characteristics.

They are straightforward to

install following conventional

block laying practice. Hemelite

and Topcrete blocks provide a

strong background for the

application of wet and dry

finishes as well as a good

substrate into which to

secure fixings.

Hemelite Foundation

Hemelite FoundationFoundation is produced

specifically for use below DPC in

solid walls. It replaces the inner

and outer leaf, wall ties and

concrete cavity fill associated

with traditional construction

methods. This means that

construction time may be halved

compared to cavity walling and

that the wall becomes stable

soon after laying, eliminating the

risk of collapsed cavities.

They are formed with recessed

grooves in each short edge to

facilitate lifting and are available

in sizes of 255 x 290 x 140mm or

255 x 300 x 140mm.

ApplicationFoundation blocks can be

used to support cavity walls of

250mm – 300mm above DPC, or

solid walling of equivalent size.

Foundation blocks may be laid

with either 255mm or 290,

300mm as the wall width.

Hemelite Reveal

Hemelite Reveal blocksL-shaped blocks close the cavity

at openings and eliminate

cutting and wastage of full sized

blocks. They maintain a strong

masonry bond as well as

providing a good bearing for

beams and lintels. The Reveal

block return dimension is 65mm:

an allowance should be made for

the DPC and any insulation

required to limit thermal

bridging.

Topcrete RPW

Topcrete RPW RPW (Residential Party Wall)

blocks are designed for the

construction of solid masonry

separating walls in residential

buildings such as hotels and

student accommodation.

They offer an alternative ‘slim

line solution’ to established sizes

of cavity and solid separating walls.

SizeRPW blocks are 290mm long x

190mm width x 140mm high.

They should be used to construct

a 190mm thick wall.

ApplicationRPW blocks are intended for the

construction of separating walls

in residential buildings. Subject

to adequate flanking conditions

and good standards of

workmanship (see the Topblock

Design Guide), the walls are

capable of meeting the specified

performance standard of

43 DnT,w+Ctr dB, with a plaster or

drylined finish.

The performance of RPW has

been evaluated based on tests to

BS EN ISO 140-3 and BS EN ISO

717-1. Walls can be finished with

13mm dense or lightweight

plaster, or 12.5mm plasterboard

on dabs. It is essential that good

standards of workmanship are

maintained, particularly the full

filling of all mortar joints, to

enable the acoustic potential of

the separating wall to be realised.

For commercial and industrial

applications these products may

be used to provide sound

insulation, fire resistance and

resistance to impact damage.

Paint Quality grade blocks are

suitable for direct decoration.

For internal walls

that are required to

provide sound

insulation between

bedrooms,

or a room containing

a water closet and

other rooms, to

satisfy Building

Regulation E2,

constructions are shown on

page 21. These are based on the

guidance given in Approved

Document E or have been tested

to confirm that they will provide

the minimum sound insulation of

40 Rw dB required by Building

Regulation E2.

Separating wallsThe Building Regulations require

separating walls to provide

reasonable resistance to sound

transmission.

Guidance on suitable Hemelite

and Topcrete constructions

capable of meeting the specified

performance is shown on pages

21 and 22. This includes

constructions that can be built to

satisfy Robust Details E-WM-1, 2,

Details provides an alternative to

pre-completion testing for

demonstrating compliance with

Part E for new build dwellings.

Robust Details should be used in

accordance with the scheme

requirements including plot

registration.

The performance of separating

walls is highly dependent on

design, detailing and the good

workmanship of the associated

flanking construction.

Thermal insulationSome typical construction

solutions to comply with Building

Regulation Part L, Conservation

of Heat and Power, are shown on

page 24. As insulation material

sizes and their thermal

conductivity are subject to

change, it is recommended that

the U-value of constructions be

periodically confirmed by

reference to Technical Services or

the Topblock website.

From April 2006, Approved

Document L1A (new dwellings)

of the Building Regulations was

introduced so that compliance is

demonstrated by showing that

the Dwelling emission rate (DER)

is no greater than the Target

emission rate (TER) of a notional

building of the same size as the

proposed house. The TER is

calculated using standard

defaults for the fabric insulation

and the heating and hot water

systems that are embedded

within the SAP 2005 software,

resulting in a 20% reduction in

CO2 emissions compared to the

previous requirements.

The actual level of fabric

insulation required will be

dependent upon a number of

factors including the fuel type

used and the efficiency of the

heating system. The diagram

above shows typical U-values for

the exposed elements of the

building, assuming that the fuel

type is mains gas, which could

form the starting point for the

DER calculation.

Approved Document L1B

covers the standard of

insulation required when

building work is carried out on

an existing dwelling. When

constructing an extension to a

dwelling, minimum elemental

U-values apply as shown in the

table below.

Elemental U-values for extensions to existing dwellings

Safe handlingRepetitive one-person handling

of blocks can pose a risk of

injury. Health and Safety

Executive Construction Sheet 37

advises that in such cases blocks

should not exceed 20kg. Some

constructions may require the

use of heavier units and

appropriate handling methods

should be adopted. Maintaining

blocks within the 20kg guideline

can be achieved in a number of

ways. For example, cellular or

hollow blocks can often be

specified without compromising

performance.

Wall widths of 190mm and

215mm can be achieved by

laying 2 x 90mm or 2 x 100mm

blocks back to back. This is

recommended for facing

applications. Alternatively solid

units such as Hemelite Ultra or

Topcrete RPW can be specified.

Wall widths of 215mm can also

be met by laying 100mm blocks

flat (on their sides). This is

recommended where finishes

such as plaster or drylining are to

be applied to the wall. A number

of recent product innovations

such as the Topcrete Midi,

Multicore and RPW blocks have

been designed to combine

technical properties with safe

handling requirements.

For guidance on approximate

unit weights, reference should

be made to the size and unit

weight tables in this brochure.

Movement controlMovement joints should be

provided in accordance with

BS 5628-3 generally at intervals

of 7 – 8m. Movement joints are

not usually necessary for internal

walls in dwellings. In areas of

concentrated stress, such as

above and below openings,

consideration should be given to

the introduction of bed joint

reinforcement.

MortarThe mortar type should be

selected taking into account

durability, structural strength

and provision for movement.

Detailed guidance on the

selection of mortars is given in

BS 5628-3 and BS 8000-3.

For work above ground level

(DPC), mortar designation (iii)

will normally be satisfactory.

Below ground level, mortar

designation (iii) or (ii) may be

used in accordance with in

BS 5628-3.

The design of walls employing

high strength blocks, typically

10.4N/mm2 or greater, will result

in enhanced loadbearing

capacity when designation (ii) or

(i) mortars are used.
