VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

KAY CRASKAS EACH RECEIVED A GIFT. USE IT TO SERVE ONE

ANOTHER 1 PETER 4: 10

"I love the fact that SWCCservesmeals, but the missionof "helping people helpthemselves" really resonated with me from the beginning" says Kay Craskexplaining how she got involved with SWCC almost 5 years ago. Kay wasintroduced to SWCC by board member Stacey Petersen several years agowhen Stacey invited her to the Harvest Banquet. Although Kay no longer lives inOrange County she continues to support SWCc.

SWCCis so grateful for volunteers like Kay Crosk,Stacey Peterson,SWCC boardmember had the opportunity to spend some time asking her some questionsabout her involvement with the center.

S:What aspects of SWCC'smany servicesand programs caught your attention:

K: The goal of becoming self-sustaining gives back an individual's dignity andmakes room for the next person in need of services. SWCC does not stop withfeeding a person who is hungry, there are services to provide clothing, help towrite a strong resume, and even assistance with transportation to a jobinterview.

S: How have you blessed the Southwest Community Center with your giftsand talents?

K: I first assisted the Center with financial donations, but as time went on. Iwanted to do more. Since you (Stacey Petersen)were working on the firstGalaFundraiser,it was a natural fit for me to help with entertainment. As a violinistandteacher, I found a student string quartet to provide music for the firstbanquet. Iwas able to attend that firstyear, but for the second Gala I decided toenlist my fellow violinist and educator Gary Hung in providing music for thecocktail hour and together we entertained the guests. Interestingly enough,Gary is now interested in finding ways for himself and his many students tobecome involved with SWCc.

S: When you firstbecame involved with the SWCCyou lived in Yorba Linda. Nowyou live in Three Rivers, near Sequoia National Park. Living so far away, what hasprompted you to stay connected to the Center?

K: In 2013 I retired and moved from Orange County to Three Rivers,a small.village near Sequoia National Park. It never occurred to me to stop myinvolvement with the Center! I still support the Center with my yearly financialcontribution, but I love giving the gift of music when entertainment is neededand will continue to do so. .

S: Some people are under the impression that the only ways to support anorganization are through direct financial support or direct volunteerism. Can youshare some of the creative ways you've provided support to the Center?

K: I love finding creative ways to volunteer and sometimes prefer that tofinancial donations. A fun way I gave back to the Center in 2015was to ask myfrlends to donate food to the Center in lieu of birthday gifts. It made me sohappy to drive up to the Center and request help unloading my car, which wasfilled with heavy bags of canned and dried foods. This year I hosted aSeptember birthday celebration with a couple friendsand we asked our gueststobring school supplies and backpacks in order to outfit SWCCchildren for the newschool year.

ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT

,.Congregants of the La Purisima Catholic Church in Orange have been serving meats at theSouthwest Community Center for almost 40 years. La Purisima is a multicultural diversecongregation in the Purisima parish of the Catholic Diocese of Orange, which can document itsorigins back to the 1920s, first as mission parish, then as a Church.

.The team of volunteers, led by Maryellen and Mike Keating, serve lunch at the Center on thesecond Saturday of each month. Their menu includes hot dogs and quesadillas, salad, dessertand a drink. The team usually includes four to six members of the Church; of which some areyoung people from Confirmation classes, those preparing for their First Communion or juststudents from the Church's K-8 Grades school who want to perform community service. TheKeatings, who started the team, make sure that each of the young people who accompany themunderstand the true meaning of giving back by serving the community in need.

In addition to her duties as leader of the food service team, Maryellen has recently taken on thevolunteer support role of helping the Center conduct outreach activities for our fundraisingevents. We have truly benefited for her efforts in getting supporters for our annual Gala and ourHarvest Banquet.

La Purisima Catholic Church is one of several churches in the Orange diocese that supports theSouthwest Community Center both in heart and service and we are overwhelmingly blessed andgrateful for their service.
