Sent to ServeI have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you… By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:15, 35 (NIV)

At Love In the Name of Christ our mission is “to mobilize local churches to transform lives and communities in the Name of Christ,” mobilizing churches to be the hands and feet of Christ, salt and light in the community, sharing the love of Christ with those that desperately need hope and the assurance that they are loved.

In 2016, once again, the people of God demonstrated their love for Jesus by serving their neighbors in need in Lancaster County. Your selfless service and financial partnership continues to provide the means to continue to demonstrate Christ’s love. We are using our resources to find new and better ways to get the Love INC message to as many churches and volunteers as possible.

Last year we were able to meet 5,284 needs, but with 350 unmet needs, there is more work to be done. Your willingness to serve and your financial support will enable us to meet even more needs in 2017. We are committed to wise stewardship of the resources both human and financial toward this task.

Thank you for praying, giving, and serving as our partners as we seek to demonstrate love in the name of Christ. We greatly cherish the relationship with every person committed to our mission.

Sincerely,

Karen Uhrich, MSN, RN, President Board of Directors Adjunct Faculty Pennsylvania College of Health Science Faith Bible Fellowship Church

The Ultimate HopeFive years ago, “Janelle” met the man she thought she would be with

forever. But she soon realized that he preyed on her low self-esteem and manipulated her into staying with him regardless of how he treated her. She had a miscarriage later that year and became very depressed. They fought a lot and moved often, as he never held a job longer than a month.

In January 2013, “Janelle” found out that she was expecting again. But, as she later shared,

Things still were not healthy and not how I imagined my life would be… The entire time I was pregnant, this person cheated on me and abused me emotionally, physically and spiritually. I was not allowed to see friends or family unless he was present, I was not allowed to attend church because he did not want to go and I was not allowed to spend my hard-earned money unless I discussed it with him. When I was four months pregnant, we were living out of my car in Walmart parking lots, rest areas off I-81 and pull-offs on 322 as well as in a tent at the campground I was working at.

Her nurse helped the couple find stable housing, but when “Janelle” discovered that her boyfriend was cheating on her, she kicked him out. Her daughter was now six months old, and “Janelle” found herself unemployed and unable to afford the apartment on her own.

I moved out of that apartment and onto my mom’s couch with a small infant. We continued to live there until… I was blessed with being offered an opportunity to work with Homes of Hope through Love INC. I was nervous, but very excited to be working with a mentor and most importantly a budget coach. I was intimidated, but optimistic because

I knew I had a spending problem, but wasn’t sure how to curb it. Having someone else hold me accountable for my expenses helped immensely. When my budget coach set the ultimate goal of at least $1500 in savings, I looked at her and laughed because I didn’t think that it would happen. [But in] a couple of months… it happened, plus some! That was the most rewarding thing to see! I was unable to find housing before needing to move out and ended up back at my mom’s house. This time, I had a couple thousand dollars saved and the knowledge of how to run a household and budget by myself, which was liberating.

Fast forward a few months… a friend from ten years ago walked into my life and again blessed me and this time my daughter too! We are planning a wedding for September 2018. I am enrolled at PA College of Health Sciences for nursing and still working at my job. I never imagined my life going the way it did, but I never lost my faith and continuously prayed for God to forgive me for all the wrong I did and boy did He forgive me!...

Never stop fighting and always keep your faith. Sometimes that is all you have left to hold onto and that is okay.

Now settled in her own home, “Janelle” recently wrote, “I appreciate all [Homes of Hope] did for me, from giving me the chance to turn my life around to not judging me when I made a not-so-good decision. You saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself and in turn helped me prove to myself that I could actually accomplish something and provide for my daughter all by myself! Homes of Hope is the best name for the program because that’s exactly what was provided, HOPE!”

Reflected LoveWhen “Scott” was referred to Love INC’s Clearinghouse several years ago, he was

trying to recover from a serious accident, and was faced with a myriad of problems. His physical injuries required him to walk with a cane, he was no longer able to drive, and he was struggling with the emotional trauma that often comes along with devastating physical injuries. In his early 50s, “Scott” didn’t have family nearby that could assist him, and he needed many rides — to doctor’s appointments, therapy, and other services.

Because his needs were great, and ongoing, we connected him with several different congregations. Eight men from four different churches served him over the course of several years, and folks from the churches were there for him when a member of his family was killed in an accident last year.

“Scott” moved several times while Love INC was serving him, and his last move was to Lancaster City. Even though the most recent congregation that served him is in the County, well outside the City, they continue to be there for him. One of his volunteers has developed a special friendship with “Scott.” “He’s very compassionate,” says the volunteer, “and is already known by many people in his neighborhood. We really enjoy talking to each other.” The volunteer even helped “Scott” discover a small church in his neighborhood that he enjoys attending. And once a month, his volunteer and friend leaves his own church, and accompanies “Scott” to his neighborhood church.

What an example of love! The Love that reflects God’s love, and never grows weary. The Love that can transform lives, and communities, in the Name of Christ!

Upheld by the Love of ChristAnd let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. — Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

How easy it is to grow weary! Especially in today’s world, when we are bombarded from every side by cell phones, e-mail, texts, social media, and 24-hour news reporting. At the end of the day, we often simply want to go home and shut the world, and its demands, out. Even when those demands are “good” ones — children, grandchildren, friends and church activities — we often feel overburdened, and our spirits need a rest. And that’s not a bad thing.

But Paul, in his appeal to the Galatians to “not grow weary,” is not talking about physical tiredness. Another definition for “weary” is discouraged or disillusioned, and this is what Paul is concerned with. We are not to grow weary in our acts of love for our neighbor, even when we reach the end of our own sufficiency. For indeed, that is when God’s sufficiency becomes our strength.

As you read the Love Stories in this year’s Annual Report, you can see that they are about real people with real problems, just like us. As God does not grow weary with us when we continue to make poor decisions or missteps, so we are called to serve our neighbors without discouragement or weariness. Love In the Name of Christ is so very privileged to assist the churches of Lancaster County by providing opportunities to serve, and tools to keep Christian servants from growing weary. We are more thankful than you know for the servants, the prayers, and the financial gifts that allow us to say “yes” to the thousands of people each year we can bless by connecting them to a local church.

It is my prayer that as you continue in your service, whether through the Clearinghouse, Homes of Hope, the Compassion Project, the Flowing Oil Café, or your gifts of prayer and monetary support, you will be constantly upheld by the love of Christ and the provision of His Church, so that you will soar on wings like eagles, you will run and not grow weary, you will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:31).
