I

Sincerely,

Darrell W. CoxArtistic DirectorProles eatre

We would team up with Will Kern in 2010 on the World Premiere of Kid Sister and at that time began to kick around the idea of producing Hellcab. e 20 year anniversary of the show was approaching in 2012 and thought this would be the ideal time to give this show back to Chicago—the play has had a rich production history since opening in ‘92, having been produced all over the world. A lm of the play exists as well, with a cast of many Chicago actors. What Will didn’t expect was that we would want to produce it with 34 actors playing all the various passengers. Every production of Hellcab onstage to this point involved 6 actors playing all the dierent fares and a cab driver. However, when I read the play I was really taken by how much I cared about everyone—and how this play really captures Chicago and all its eccentricity and diversity. Which makes sense, given the majority of what you see in the story are actual passengers Will encountered while driving a cab in Chicago in the early 90’s.

rst encountered Hellcab in 1999 at the Ivanhoe eatre. e Famous Door production had been running 7 years at that point –eventually closing in 2002 aer an unprecedented 10-year run. I fully expected the show to be woefully out of shape and quite frankly underwhelming. Based on our own experiences at Proles regarding long runs—I knew it was very dicult to keep a show in shape over many months. At the time, we were fully immersed in the American Premiere of Popcorn, which would easily be our longest running show (eventually closing in 2002 aer a 22 month run). Aer all, this was a late-night show that had gone through numerous cast changes—even the show’s title had been changed, initially opening as Hellcab Does Christmas. But, this production was directed by Dado and had Larry Neumann Jr. as the driver. Simply put, I had great time and was really struck by how much I cared about this guy.

Needless to say, this was a huge undertaking. I would like to thank this talented, caring, gracious bunch of actors—a group you could only truly nd in Chicago. I would also like to thank all the designers: Set Designer Shaun Renfro, Light Designer Mike Durst, Sound and Music Designer Je Levin, Costume Designer Raquel Adorno, Technical Directors Jim Moore and Rick Julien, my Assistant Directors Eric Burgher and Harmony France along with Stage Managers, Jordan Muller and Kaylie Honkala. ese are the folks who made what you’re about to see possible. I would also, of course, like to thank Will Kern for his collaboration—a true, generous, artist who loves playing with others. So, sit back and enjoy the ride: a day in the life of a Chicago cab driver on Christmas Eve, 1992.

Profiles Theatre, founded in 1988 by Artistic Director Joe Jah-raus, joined shortly thereafter by Artistic Director Darrell W. Cox, was formed as an actor-driven theatre ensemble dedi-cated to creating provocative and emotionally truthful produc-tions. Passionate about shaping an original vision for new works, they focused on performing World, American and Mid-west premieres as well as rarely performed plays. Critically acclaimed hits, such as BLACKBIRD, FAT PIG, GRACELAND and the multiple Jeff Award-winning KILLER JOE, established Profiles as a destination for challenging and edgy theatre. Their unique collaboration with playwright Neil LaBute led the ensemble to perform an entire season of his plays in 2007-2008. Now a Resident Artist at Profiles, LaBute remains an unequivocal artistic influence on the ensemble.

After performing at 4147 North Broadway for more than two decades, Profiles acquired an adjacent theatre at 4139 North Broadway in 2012. Profiles’ new theatre, The Main Stage, with its larger seating capacity, increased performance space and higher ceilings, accommodates more ambitious and technically demanding productions. Their long-time venue, renamed The Alley Stage, continues as the home for plays strengthened by a more intimate staging. Driven by an undiminished appetite for creating honest and resonant theatre, Profiles still seeks to present work that illuminates the determination and resiliency of the human spirit.
