KNAUSS, M.D. HAVE been occupied for over one year on the design and perfection of a playing conune cial phonograph record. double disc, made entirely of metal. I have now succeeded in producing this article, samples of which I have successfully demonstrated to the editors. There are certain tcrnv in the phonograph record which will illustrate more clearly than anything else the problems involved in the production of records. First of these is, "surface." -As nearly everyone knows. there is i tremendous weight concentrated on the small area of the needle point. In the process of making the indestruc- tible metal record, which I have named the Duramel Disc, I carry the electro - deposition several steps further. It is well known that playing records have been made out of copper since the in- ception of the industry. However, these would not hold up for more than six or eight playings, at most, because the cop- per soon began to spin under the tremen- dous weight and the tool action of the sharp needle. Therefore. I first obtained a hard surface by plating an alloy of hard natal directly against the model. The front or playing surface is properly protected. the back surface is properly cleaned, and the two shells are then fitted back to back under pressure and heat. I have designed a special de- vice for making this a simple mechanical operation which can be done by almost anyone with proper instruction. Heretofore, the nearest approach to these qualities was found in a mixture of shellac, rottenstone, graphite and paper floc, known to the industry as "stock." This mixture, when heated and pressed with dies while warm, takes the impres- sion of the sound grooves from the metal "stampers." These metal stampers are made by electro -deposition of copper, the surface of which is subsequently plated with a very thin -coat of nickel. This gives the printing or stamping surface. But it became immediately apparent, in the course of my research that no single piece of metal would remain flat under the weight of the heavy tone arm of the phonograph. The single sheet of metal would invariably curl and buckle. Of course this led me to the making of double disc records by placing the single ones "back to back." theta quickly enough to deposit the metal records?" Suffice it to say that this is. one of the things which makes the process commercial, and it is entirely solved. By means of a pressing operation in soft metal, illustrated in the diagrams, it is possible to turn out twelve thousand metal forms a day from two dies and one large press. On these forms are deposited twelve thousand halves. or six thousand whole records in a period of three hours. following their being placed in the electro- lytic bath. The models are then replaced, and the process goes on continuously for twenty-four hours, during which time eight sets of twelve thousand each are stript from the models. This makes a total of 86.000 halves or 43.000 whole records, in 24 hours. After the first set of twelve thousand is stript from its models, it is necessary to center and trim, after which two hundred halves arc placed on a center pin, with tin between the backs, and a disc of copper between the fronts. This string of two hundred is then placed in an electrically heated device. and under pressure, the backs are :;weated together so that the result is one hundred perfect playing rec- ords. It is thus only necessary to have sixty of these "stoves" in order to put to- gether the twelve thousand halves. This operation requires less than three hours, so that the "stoves" are ready for the next set of shells when they come out. The number of metal records and the speed of production arc entirely dependent on the equipment, which costs only one - tenth as much as that required for the corresponding production of the other type of record. The result speaks for itself. It has scarcely any surface noise, due to the ideal bearing surface of the metal needle on metal. It is so nearly indestructible that only the most extreme mechanical violence will destroy it. It is fireproof, waterproof, acidproof, rustproof, un- breakable, light in weight (weighing only six ounces, which is two ounces less than the -common record of ten inches diam- eter). The metal record can be sent thru the mails without loss from breakage. It costs less for packing and handling. The actual material used in the Duramel Disc costs less than six cents, which is less than that of the common record. Being made almost entirely by electric. processes, the energy used can be obtained at a microscopic cost per record, where power is cheap and figures in on a yearly or overhead basis. Thus it is seen that the metal record is scientifically correct. It is commercial, practical, and the product is indestructi- ble. I have only a few comments.I think the radio researchers andinventors throughout radio's historywere very sharp and ingenious, suchas DeForest, Fleming, Armstrong,Kent and Scott to mention only a few.But what about the cabinet makersfor radios? What were the theorieson cabinets? To a lot of people Ihave talked to the cabinets are theeye catch. Did the previously ment-ioned radio geniuses also design,experiment and develop the cabinetswith their fancy designs and select-ed choices of wood grains? Or, didthey leave this to a separate groupof people, such as Pooley? What a-bout the colorful separate speakercabinets and housings? What aboutthe speaker cloth designs:

In your opinion based upon yourexperience and the experiences ofothers which cabinets were con-sidered the fanciest and best look-ing?

These are a lot of questions a-mong others that I am curious about.

Perhaps you may have an article onsome of these items some day, orelse I've missed them. Your paperis very good. I wouldn't miss itfor the world. Thank you for thereading enjoyment.

I started collecting radios about2 years ago when I was 111. I'm stillat it and save up my money from apaper route to buy them. My mainsource is garage sales.'hat got me on this, was a local radiostation playing old radio programs.I thought it would be nice to have acathedral style to listen to them on.During my search, I was surprised tosee the wide variety of items avail-able. After quite a search, I finallygot a U.S. Radio & T.V. Cathedraltype. What a mess it was: The radiowasn't much to fix, but the cabinettook over a month, working on theaverage of 4 nights a week, severalhours each night. It's now one ofseveral I now have.

Now I go through list after listsent to me by fellow collectors andhope there's something I can afford.Usually it's the shipping chargesthat kill it for me.

Do you know of any clubs or othercollectors here in Michigan? I wouldappreciate it if they would drop mea card.

I would like to see more firsthand accounts of the radio industryin it's early years. How about someof your older (or more mature:)readers contributing some articles?

It had 8-201aux tubes in it.Parts are mounted on a wood chassisbase, with a ser. #1072. It is bus -bar wired, well designed and con-structed° All R.F. transformers aremarked and labeled, Victor Products,Victoreen Radio Inc., Cleveland,Ohio. I would like to know if itwas a kit set, custom built, ormanufactured. It surely doesn't looklike 'home brew:' as I have seen

first announcer in the Greater NewYork area. WJZ, Newark was put onthe air by Westinghouse in Sep-tember 1921. The transmitter hadbeen sent from Pittsburgh and waslike the one at KDKA. Cowan was a

company employee and was selected

to do the talking."This is WJZ, WJZ, WJZ, the

radio telephone broadcasting stationlocated in Newark, New Jersey.Please stand by to tune your sets.This is announcer Cowan, Newark."After awhile, he shortened it to"ACN."

During the first few nights,there was no program --just talk byCowan. Even this brought a consider-able amount of mail. Cowan decidedto put some music on the air. Hisfirst job had been with Thomas Ed-ison at Orange, N.J. He went to seeEdison to borrow some records. Theinventor didn't like radio. Appar-ently, he thought some of his dis-coveries had been used in its de-velopment. Regardless of his feel-ings, Edison lent his former em-ployee some records.

WJZ began broadcasting the WorldSeries between the Yankees and theGiants October 5, 1921. Cowan's

voice was heard reporting the action,but he was not at the game. A news-paper reporter relayed the happen-ings by telephone and Cowan repeat-ed them into the mike. It was sucha trying task that when the game wasover, he didn't even realize whichteam had won. (The Yankees won thefirst game, But the Giants took theseries.)

REACTIVATION OF THE THORIATEDTUNGSTEN FILAMENT VACUUM TUBE

The process of rejuvenation forthe vacuum tube was one of the manysecrets of radio that the old-timersused some fifty or sixty years ago.Try it it will give you justanother phase of enjoyment in thestudy of vintage radio. In placingmy mind and thoughts in those yester-years helps to give me the fulfilmentof this fascinating hobby of antiqueradio collecting.

In the 1920s vacuum tube rejuvenat-ion was not only an art but a big bus-iness. Radio tubes for the home re-ceivers on the average sold for around"5.00 each. Many so called "blackmarket" tubes were sold for about onehalf of that amount. The "blackmarket" tubes being the ones thatwere extremely weak and for all pract-ical purposes had been discarded.Many of these tubes were rejuvenatedand sold at the cheaper price withactually a higher profit. Around themid 20s manufacturers began producingrejuvenators for the service man.This was a big factor in helping tocut the ever rising cost of repairingthe home receiver. In this articlemy intention is to cover the generalrejuvenation process for the collect-or. An understanding of this pro-ceedure will enable the enthusiastto possibly reactivate some of hisweak emitting tubes. However, Iwould suggest that you cover thiscomplete article before attemptingthis process of rejuvenation.

Tubes are usually constructed withtungsten wire filaments. The numberof electrons thrown off by such fil-aments is greatly increased when a

chemical known as thorium is addedto the tungsten wire when it is man-ufactured. Filaments having thoriumdrawn with the tungsten wire are knownas thoriated tungsten filaments.Tubes having thoriated tungsten oxide

filaments operate at a much lowertemperature than those with othertyres of filaments and thereforethrow off very little light.

Tubes with thoriated tungstenfilaments are the only ones that canbe rejuvenated. If the filament isburning and the emission is low oreven zero, more than likely the tubecan be revived. Tubes that havebeen badly overloaded may not im-prove, but I will cover a "flashingprocess" for these tubes before youthrow them away.

The filament condition of a tubemay be most readily judged by anemission test using the circuitshown in figure #1. The voltages

table, the tube is in good conditionand does not need reactivating. If

equipment for reading emission isnot available a simple test for thetwo most widely used tube types canbe made on the customary tube testset which measures plate current.This circuit is shown in figure #2.

For UX-199 or CX-199 tubes, setthe plate voltage at Its volts withthe grid connected to the negativeside of the filament, set the filament voltage at 3.0 volts and readthe plate current. Momentarily in-

crease the filament voltage 3.5

volts and read the plate current.If the plate current increases morethan .2. MA, the filament is notfully active and the tube may beimproved by the reactivation pro-

cess.For the UX-201A or CX-201A tubes,

the same plate voltage of lay voltsis used but the plate current isread with the filament voltages setat It volts and 6 volts. An increase

of more than .2 MA in the plate cur-rent indicates that the tube may beimproved by reactivation.

If the tube will not return tonormal after reactivation treatmentit is proof that the tube has eitherserved its normal life or has beenso heavily overloaded that thethorium content has been exhaustedor the vacuum impaired.METHOD OF REACTIVATION -- The fol-lowing methods will generally re-store the emission, that is react-ivate, tubes which have been over-loaded and also, at times, will re-

activate, for short additionalusage, tubes that have dropped inemission at the end of a normallife. The exact process which givesthe best results depends upon theoverload to which the tube has beensubjected.

Tubes which have been subjectedto only a slight overload may bereactivated by a very simple process.This consist of burning the filament,with the plate voltage disconnected,at the voltage listed in the tableunder the heading 'Reactivation Vol-tage.' This process speeds up theboiling out of the thorium from thebody of the wire of the filamentwhile at the same time the surfaceevaporation is very slow when theplate voltage is not applied. The

length of time required to react-ivate a tube is from about fifteenminutes to two hours, depending onhow long the tube was subjected toexcessive voltages. At the end offifteen minutes, test the tube asexplained in the preceeding para-graphs. If the emission shows im-provement continue the treatmentuntil the tube tests above minimumpassing limit.

Tubes which have been badlyoverloaded may not improve duringthis process, and a 'flashing' vol-tage may be used, as outlined inthe next paragraph.

First burn the filament for ten

or fifteen seconds at the 'flash-ing voltage.' Then burn the fil-ament under the process first dis-cribed, using the reactivation vol-tages. Read the emission at the endof about thirty minutes and if notimproved, continue to burn the fil-ament for about two hours, takingreading every twenty to thirty min-utes. If a couple of hours treat-ment does not restore emission orgreatly improve it, then the tubecan not be reactivated. No plate

voltage is every applied duringreactivation. The applied vol-tages should always be monitoredby a suitable volt meter. A smallpercentage of the tubes reactivat-ed by the 'flash voltage' processmay be expected to burn out duringthe flashing period, but these arethe tubes at or near the end oftheir normal life.

Rapid reactivation, sometimeswithin ten minutes, can be accomp-lished by the use of voltages high-er than those recommended in thechart. This process very materiallyshortens the tube life and such re-activation is generally not per-manent. Furthermore, the usage ofhigher voltages greatly increasesthe percentage of tubes that burnout and the filaments are in worseshape than they were before theprocess started. This hurry up pro-cess of rejuvenation should behighly discouraged.REACTIVATION EQUIPMENT -- Alternat-ing current from the house voltagesupply is most convenient and canbe stepped down to the proper vol-tage by a toy or bell ringingtransformer. There are numerousstep down transformers availablewith several step-down taps toselect from. Connect the trans-former in series with a 15 to 20

ament as shown in figure #3. Againuse a suitable volt meter in ad-justing voltages. Most A.C. volt-

meters draw heavy currents andshould not be ?.eft connected tothe circuit for long periods oftime. Tf an alternating supply isnot available any direct voltagesupply can be used. The largervoltages for flashing may be ob-tained from "B' batteries. Only

one tube should be reactivated at atime in order to keep a close watchon the voltages at all times.?;0RANAL OPr,RATTON PPECAUTIONS -- If

rheostat set as low as possible,if possible use a reliable voltmeter.

(2)Do not use high plate voltagesunless 'C' batteries are used.With types C-299, CX-299, UV -199,UX-199, and CX-3012, UV -201A andUX-201A better life is obtained,and 'B' battery current drain islessened when a voltage of 672voltage or less is used in theplate circuit in case no 'C' bat-tery is provided.

(3)Be careful when changing batteryconnections to see that the bat-tery polarities are not reversed.If the leads connecting the fil-ament supply or the grid bias sup-ply are reversed, the signals andmusic may still be heard, butthey will be faint and distorted.Such a reversed condition oftencauses the operator to turn thefilament voltage to a higher set-ting, thus injuring the tube with-out an appreciable results. :_;If an insensitive tube and a tubein perfect condition are operat-ed from the same rheostat, therewill be a tendency to overloadthe good tube in order to obtaina better response from the weakertube. The weaker tube should bereactivated or replaced. Hereagain the use of a reliable voltmeter for the filaments willsave overloading the tubes.

')When using C-299, CX-299, CX-220,UV -199, UX-199, UX-120 types and

a filament volt meter is not av-ailable, the operation of the setmay be checked as follows: Con-nect two fresh dry cells in series

(3V) for the heater voltage. Therheostats now may be turned onfull (no resistance) and if theset and tubes are operation* cor-rectly, satisfactory receptionwill be obtained. If the re-sults are not satisfactory checkbatteries, battery connections,aerial connections and tubes.The two fresh dry cells will of-fer satisfactory reception whenthe trouble is located in the re-ceiver.

GENERAL COMMENT -- The voltages spec-ified in the table are the maximumwhich should be used, A volt metershould be used to set the appliedvoltages to the proper values in or-

der to obtain the proper results.Tubes which have internal shorts

between elements can not be react-ivated and it may be convenient tomake the short test with an OHY meter.If an O:Ifii meter is not available a

pair of headphones and a dry cellconnected in series will work satis-factory in locating shorts if theyexist. When the tube is not lighted,there should be an open circuit be-tween the plate and the grid, theplate and the filament, and the gridand the filament. There should be aclosed circuit between the two fila-ment connections.

Tubes in which the vacuum is im-paired can not be reactivated. Thisis usually indicated by a filament

current reading above rated value.If considerable air is in the tube,the filament will not light up atall unless the voltage is raised con-siderably above the rated value. inwhich case the filament may burn out.

Cunningham types C-11, CX-12, andCX-200 and radiotron tubes as WD -11,

UX-112 do not use thoriatedtungsten filaments and can not be re-activated.TESTING THE 200A and 300A DETECTORTUBES -- The UX-200A or the CX-300Atube is designed only for service asa detector and differs from the othertypes of tubes in that it containsan alkali vapor. The formation of thevapor occurs during the first threemintites after the tube is lit, dur-ing which period the tube charact-eristics change rapidly causingvariation in the plate current andpreformance of the tube when operat-ing in a radio receiving set. As soonas the tube warmed up, or at the endcf about three minutes, the readingsbecome uniform and no further changesoccur. As a result of this action,readings taken during the period ofchange are variable, and are of novalue. However,. since the change doesnot usually began until about oneminute after the voltage has beenapplied to the filament, it is pos-sible to make a quick test immediatelyafter the voltage has been applied,otherwise; the readings should betaken at the end of the three minutewarm up period.

Tests on the 200A and 300A seriestubes should be made with a platevoltage of 45 volts and no highervoltage should be used. Since thesetubes are designed for detector ser-vice only, a thorough test of thetubes require considerable equipment.Plate current readings, such as takenin the average test sets, indicateonly the condition of the filamentand can not be depended upon as atest of the detector sensitivity.For that reason the best practicaltest for the tube is a check of theoperation obtained under actual ser-vice conditions in a receiver, witha weak incoming signal being pre-ferred. Quick test during the firstminute of warm up will usually suf-fice, but if any doubt as to thesatisfactory performance of the tubearises, it should be allowed to warmup the full three minutes before at-tempting to complete the test.

A plate current reading obtainedwith this tube when used in a radioreceiving set with a grid condenserand a grid leak is quite differentthan that obtained in a test set.Under usual conditions the platecurrent is approximately 1 MA, vary-ing only slightly from this valueregardless which side of the fila-ment the grid is connected. Thedifference in reading as comparedwith those obtained in a test setis due to the fact that the gridcurrent furnished by this tube issufficient to establish a voltagedrop in the grid leak equivalent

to the use of a grid bias voltageof 2 to 21 volts.

Under certain conditions a hissis produced at the time the platecurrent noted in the preceedingparagraph occurs. If a milliamperemeter is placed in a detector platecircuit, it will be noted that theinitial reading is about 1 MA re-maining at this value for the firstminute, while during the secondminute the plate current risesslowly to 2 or even 3 MA. It isduring this change that the hisssometimes occurs. The plate currentthen returns to a value close tothe initial value and then the tubewill operate quitely.

There are several reasons for nottesting these tubes at voltages nohigher than 45 volts, first it doesnot represent the operating condit-ions of the tube, secondly the gridbiasing voltages are often appliedwhen testing at higher voltages. Be-cause of the amplification constantof the tube the plate current willbe practically blocked at 90 voltson the plate, if the ordinary vol-tage of minus 4 volts is appliedto the grid, the reading will beonly a fraction of a milliampere.

When a test of the filament con-ditions and the short test only isdesired, the readings from the or-dinary tube test wet will be foundsatisfactory. A sample reading us-ing a detector tube 300A at a fil-ament voltage of 5 volts and a platevoltage of 45 volts. During thefirst minute of warm up the platedrew 1.6 MA with the grid connect-ed to the minus side of the filamentand 6.1 MA with it connected to thepositive side of the filament.After the three minute warm up theplate drew 2.1 MA with the grid con-nected to the minus side of the fil-ament and 6.2 MA when the grid wasconnected to the positive side ofthe filament. These drastic changesin plate current are due to the for-mation of the alkali vapor in thedetector tubes. The detector tubesare the only tubes required to warmup such a long period of time inorder to make the various emissiontest we have been speaking of inthe previous paragraphs.REACTIVATING POWER TUBES -- The pow-er tubes such as the 203A, 204A, 210,211, 213, 216B and the 852 can bereactivated only if they have thethoriated tungsten filament. Onthese tubes the flashing voltages istwice the rated voltage and shouldnot be applied over fifteen seconds.The reactivating voltages are only20% higher than the rated voltagefor the filament. The time requiredfor reactivating is two to fifteenminutes. If the emission is not upto the rated value then the tubehas run its normal life.
