2. 20 rules for a Website
There are always more bad news than good news !
Respect the Web. Use standards.
Think Web platform and not only Website.
Choose the right platform and partner.
Be organized and consistent.
Speed. Think Google.
Never bet on the (technical) skills of the visitor.
Every page is a homepage.
Avoid and manage errors. No 404 !
Share with RSS ! Simple but powerful. *
* see specific presentation
3. 20 rules for a Website
Provide a real user experience.
Listen, understand and segment users.
SearchEngineOptimization ! *
Stats, analytics, popularity, (e-)reputation. *
Master e-mailing and newsletter. *
Think mobile. It will be dominant ! *
Go for Web 2.0 but not to look trendy. *
Think Cloud, mashups and Web services. *
Technology and business watch ! *
If you forget 1 to 19 think about the real life!
* see specific presentation
4. Whats to remember ?You must be able to listand explain these 20 rules(some of them are explainedin other presentations).
5. What says Gartner ?Worlds leading IT researchand advisory company.Interesting to listen to them.Very corporate oriented.Try Forrester if you search a moreyou and me information.
6. 1. There are alwaysmore bad news than good news !Especially during an ICTproject ( and Web is part of ICT).It costs more and it works worse than expected. Human resources wereunder-evaluated. Web agency is lessavailable than planned.... And more.
7. Coordinate responsibilities.A key issue in Web projectsremains the lack ofcoordinated action across teams.Centralising the coordinationunder an individual with realauthority to act can improvethe success of the project.
8. 2. Respect the Web standards
First of all the site must be build with Web standards or it will die ! (X)HTML + CSS and then DOM + AJAX/Javascript + Flash/Silverlight + whatever you want if it speaks XML and is widely used!
Its the only way to provide a good user experience on any browser/computer.
Then there is a lot to learn from the experience of the users on other sites. So, you must know and respect these uses (if good of course) to make your site more intuitive.
For example, its better to respect terminologies as home or shopping cart that are widely used.
9. Learn to listen.Integrate the concept ofcommunities and the collective.Avoid reinventing the wheelby observing best practicesalready definedby leading communities.
10. Separate content and presentation. You must be able to completely changethe look and feel of the Websitewithout changinga single line of (source) code.
11. Same but different.See awt.be/web/ebuand awt.be/web/inf.They share the same source codebut they look different.
12. 3. The Web is the platform
A structuredandstandardized content
Mobile andmultichannel
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Diffusion and sharing on social networks
Portal strategy (ERP, CRM,SCM, etc.)
Maintenanceand scalabilityof the Website
Sharing and Interoperability(RSS, XML, etc.)
Customization of services and marketing
Cloud and mashups
13. Integrate other interactionchannels with the website.Failure to connect web serviceswith human servicesis a source of frustrationfor many customers.
14. Create dynamic andrelevant web content.Companies have to examinethe costs and benefits of movingfrom static content deliveryto a practice of optimizingdelivery to matchcustomers needs.
15. 4. The right partner and platform
When you choose your partner, ask him evidence of his expertise ! Avoid exotic solutions and the son of the friend of your cousin who makes websites in his garage.
16. If your company and/or Website begins to look like spaghetti think portal
17. From a simple Web site to a real EIP (Enterprise Information Portal)
18. Web services et cloud computing
19. 3 types of solution

  • Build from scratch, but with a strong framework (with or without a Web agency). You will need serious skills ! Time to market can be too long. You can match exactly your needs.

20. Customize a reliable commercial solution (with or without a Web agency). Serious skills also needed. Time to market shorter. But, maybe, it will never be completely what you wanted. 21. Use pre-build online solutions (eBay, Belgacom, Webstore, etc.). Good way to test a business model, but probably too limited if it needs to grow.
