Understanding the World

Computers and tablets will be used to find out information about the moon. The children will be comparing the moon with our own environment, identifying differences and considering why Baby Bear and owl didn’t like it on the moon. We will be looking at how boxes are used to send parcels and finding out about the people and processes involved in this. The children will also discuss Baby Bears choice of helmet and investigate materials, plan and make a more suitable one. We will also be talking about recycling and looking at the importance of tis on our environment.

Communication and Language

Again listening and retelling the story Whatever next will be a huge part of our work this half term. The children will also play lots of “What’s in the box games to encourage children to ask, understand and answer different questions

Mathematics

Children’s number skills will continue to be a focus in our continuous provision where child can practice and consolidate counting number recognition and problem solving. The theme will allow children to explore shape and space through making pictures, building models and making arrangements with shapes boxes and everyday objects. In our large construction area the different shaped bricks will be used to build space ships to get to the moon/ Shape language will be used to purchase items to be used in constructions from our junk shop and positional language will be encouraged when planning and building the various models. The children will be asked to consider size and capacity when selecting materials and will also talk about the properties of different shapes when choosing a box to send a parcel.

Physical Development

Baby Bears adventure began when he should have been having a bath and getting ready for bed. This will be used to discuss with children about the importance of how sleeping, hygiene eating and exercise can contribute to good health. We will also look at what the chose to take for his picnic on the moon and see if we could plan a healthier option. Children’s skills in using tools will be developed when creating models and building boxes in our craft and cutting areas.

LiteracyOur literacy work will focus on the story Whatever Next By Jill Murphy. The children will listen to and learn the story before retelling it in their own words and then altering the story to create their own version using simple story maps. The children will also be given lots of opportunities to use their phonics skills to write labels for their many designs. We will look at what is require to send a parcel and all children will be encouraged to practice writing their own name and the for those that are able the names of familiar people.

Expressive Arts and Design

We will be using our imagination and creativity to turn a simple box into a whole range of different objects and transport that could help them get to the moon. The children will use simple tools and techniques to assemble join and combine different media to create their own ideas of what they want their box to become. They will then have the opportunity to use their creations in their story making and role-play. The children will also have the opportunity to act out the familiar story in our T4W role play area
