teaching workload. If you haven’t already handed in your enrolment please do so as soon as possible, as we would like to include your child in the orientation program and keep you informed of coming events; as well it helps us with preliminary planning for next year. Thank you to our Parents’ Association and Mr Andrew Philp, our School Council President, for creating the time to welcome our new parents in the staffroom whilst their children enjoyed a session of PE. HEPS TRANSITION PROGRAM 2015-2016 As is the practice at HEPS our students throughout the levels, including level six, will participate in Transition activities this term and more next. The students will spend time in a level higher than is their current to engage in activities that may assist them into the transition of a new class next year. This will also assist teachers plan for next year, observing dynamics and balance to ensure class compositions are conducive to effective learning. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FOUNDATION STUDENTS I am stating the obvious when I say, ‘Time flies!’ Our youngest students have already spent 100 days of learning at HEPS. Last Friday, the Foundation students celebrate d their 100th day with various fun and inspiring activities as well a ‘super party’. Thank you to our enthusiastic teachers and supportive staff who organized the day, and the many parents who provided fabulous food and shared in the excitement. PARENT OPINION SURVEY Thank you to the parents who are responding to the Parent Opinion Survey; we currently have 74 families represented; all surveys are due back at school by Friday 7th August. NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY All schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic schools, will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability this year. The Data Collection is an annual count of the number of students with disability receiving educational adjustments to support their participation in education on the same basis as students without disability. All education agencies are now required under the Australian Education regulation 2013 to provide information on a student’s level of education, disability and level of adjustment to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. Data will continue to be de-identified prior to its transfer to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. No student’s identity will be provided to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. The collection of this information from states and territories will inform future policy and program planning in relation to students with disability. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 9729 5439 or the Victorian Department of Education and Training Data Collection Hotline on (03) 96511 3621. For questions after 7 August 2015, please call the Australian Government Department of Education and Training on 1300 566 046. TALENTED STUDENTS VISIT LOCAL KINDERS Congratulations to our String Group under the direction of Mrs Jude Harper who will share their musical talents with the children at Heathmont East Pre-School; I’m sure the kindies will love the performance. Then on Monday 3rd August, the HEPS Band will present to the children and staff at Heathmont Pre-School. I know they will be in for a treat! STAFF ABSENCES You may have noticed that Ms Sutton is absent from her LOTE lessons. Please be aware that Janine has experienced an extremely sad and traumatic time as her sister passed away last term and recently both her mother and father have passed away. I know you join me in expressing our sincere condolences. Our Business Manager is currently absent for an extended period of time as she has flown to Queensland to be with her mother who is ailing. We hope that her mother makes a speedy recovery. AQUANATION With the public opening of Aquanation only weeks away, a number of soft openings have been planned to provide a chance for the Aquanation team to test how the centre operates. We have been given 10 double

Page 3: HEATHMONT EAST PRIMARY SCHOOLassets.heathmonteastps.vic.edu.au/media/newsletters...“PEER SUPPORT GROUPS” in Years 3, 4 and 5 Children have willingly volunteered to meet in groups

passes for their soft opening on Tuesday 4th August from 4pm to 9pm at Aquanation, 37 Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood. The first 10 people to contact our office will have the opportunity to experience all the centre has to offer: be prepared to swim, water play, test out the gym, try the cycle room and take a group fitness or small group training class. REFLECTING HEPS VALUES – RESPECT Parents may not be aware but often their talk during assembly is audible and distracting to both presenters and our students as listeners. I would ask that you be positive role models for our students and display the courtesy of listening when people are speaking. We love that you are interested in the assembly and stay to witness the commencement of school but if you could remain quiet or choose a more appropriate place to hold conversations, that would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Kitty Allard. Principal.

This year has seen the emergence of “PEER SUPPORT GROUPS”

in Years 3, 4 and 5 Children have willingly volunteered to meet in groups of 3-5 children on a regular basis, to help support and care for one of their classmates who is finding school life “a bit tricky”. The childrens’ role is to be a role model and to help their classmate work out how best to respond in a difficult social situation. These Peers Support Groups have many benefits: 1. the classmate feels supported and cared for 2. the classmate learns stronger social skills from his/her peers and so feels more confident

and happier at school 3. the peer supporters learn to listen and to understand another person’s struggles 4. the peer supporters think through how best to respond to a social situation for the benefit

of everyone and so develop leadership skills 5. everyone makes more friends! As I facilitate these groups during the week, we all realize that whilst we are helping a classmate out, we are all learning a great life skill: What great joy we get out of our day, when we help others along their way! Urgently seeking

Plant Stall Co-ordinator for our

2016 SUPER Carnival

Role of Plant Stall Coordinator: Attend Fair Meetings when possible.

Organise Team of Helpers.

Advertise via Carnival Newsletters and notices for plants & flowers. Labelling and pricing of donated plants.

Organising Collect ion and storage of plants prior to Fair Day. What can the School do to assist the Plant Stall? Start collecting now: ice cream containers etc. to start growing plants for the stall.

Start potting self-sown seedlings now and taking stem and root cuttings to ensure good growth by February.

Vegetable and ornamental seeds need to be planted 6-8 weeks before the fair (depending on

variety) so start in early to mid-September to ensure they are ready for Fair day.

Semi-hardwood cuttings of deciduous ornamentals: viburnum/snowball tree, weigela/apple

blossom etc. These can be taken any time in winter after leaves have fallen.

Cuttings of hydrangeas, geraniums, salv ias, abutilon/chinese lanterns and buddleia/butterfly

bush etc. These can be taken any time before new buds are too developed.

Self-rooting sections of jasmine, strawberry runners etc. These can be potted any time roots have

developed.

Succulents: stem cuttings should be left in a shaded spot for at least 7-10 days before potting

(helps prevent rotting by drying cut stem). Don’t allow potting mixture to be too wet over winter.

Leaves of some succulents can be left on surface of pots to start new plants.

Bulbs: once foliage has died some bulbs can be lifted and potted before new roots and leaves

are too advanced.

Rhizomes: irises, arum lilies, red hot pokers, cannas, ginger lilies etc. Clumps can be separated

once old growth has died or been cut off.

Where possible please indicate name/flower colour on a label. (Cheapest labels are cut-up ice-

cream, yoghurt, margarine containers. Laundry marker writing will last a few months).

All plants are to be cared for at your home, with a drop off date to be advised in February 2016.
