    Typical Product Applications

Efcient Heat Transfer Solutions energising performance and ROI APV heat transfer solutions for the Oil & Gas industries arebased on a complete range of plate-type heat exchangertechnologies including gasketed, semi-welded and weldedplate heat exchangers. These range from high-capacity, heavy-duty units to small, compact designs, and are available eitheras standard solutions or as customised units based on ground-breaking designs and various materials.

Superior performance in less space Every additional degree of temperature that is recovered in the plateheat exchanger helps to reduce energy input and operating costs.

Containing more heat transfer area per volume and requiring lessinstalled heat transfer area due to higher thermal efciency (k-value),APV plate heat exchangers are more efcient than conventionaldesigns. Advanced engineering and design mean higher performanceinto a footprint up to ten times smaller than traditional shell and tubeheat exchangers. The smaller footprint means less extensive load-

bearing foundations, faster installation at lower cost, and lower overallCAPEX.

Longer run times, lower maintenance costs

Designed for reduced fouling compared with in particular shelland tube technology APV plate heat exchangers have longer runtimes and require less service and maintenance. They provide easyinspection and maintenance access and can be cleaned using CIP-cleaning, mechanical cleaning or high-pressure cleaners.

Shorter payback time and ROI Lower CAPEX combined with longer run times and higher thermaltransfer efciency make APV plate heat exchangers the obviouschoice for Oil & Gas companies looking for bigger savings, shorterpayback times and higher ROI over a longer service life.

Crude Oil Stabilization Raw crude oil contains water andgases that need to be removed beforethe crude oil can be further processed.Gasketed and welded plate heatexchangers are typically used in thisstabilisation process.

APV gasketed plate heat exchangers areused as wet crude-dry crude exchangerswith an efciency that ensures thehighest possible recovery of heat from thehot-dry-crude side. APV Hybrid weldedplate heat exchangers are used in highertemperature applications in which weldedplate technology is required.

    Applications include:

Crude oil (pre-) heating and cooling Cooling of produced water Closed loop cooling/heating Gas cooling and condensing

APV plate heat exchangers are designedfor the particular challenges of crudeoil including high viscosities, severefouling tendency, presence of corrosivecomponents, and vapour breakout duringthe heating process.

Key product features that ensure highheat transfer performance in crude oilapplications include:

    Efcient ow distribution systempreventing mal-distribution

Plate geometry promoting low pressuredrop at high efciency

    Easy-to-clean, low fouling rate platepatterns

    Utility Cooling

The central cooling system is essentialfor cooling the various process uidsused in the renery process. APVgasketed plate heat exchangers arewidely used in various utility coolingapplications either for direct cooling,

or indirect closed loop cooling contributing to reduced energyconsumption.

The XL-range of extra-large APV gasketedplate heat exchangers offers efcient,high-capacity cooling solutions. Withscalable conguration featuring port sizesup to 500 mm (20), heat transfer areasup to 3.800 m2 (40,903 sq. ft.) and owrates up to 4.500 m3/h (19,800 US GPM),

the XL-family offers high ow rates andcapacities in combination with excellentthermal efciency. This means that fewerplate heat exchangers in parallel arerequired for the cooling job, thus providingfor reduced capital investment in the formof lower foundation and installation costswith less piping.

Gas DehydrationRemoval of water from natural gasmost often involves a TEG-absorption(Tri-Ethylene Glycol) process.

APV plate heat exchangers are typicallyused as:

Lean/Rich TEG interchangers Lean TEG coolers Condensers

APV Hybrid welded plate heat exchangersare often used as lean/rich TEGinterchangers to increase overall processefciency. The high thermal efciency of the

APV Hybrid heat exchanger reducesexternal energy input demand, while itsdesign exibility enables achievementof very low pressure drops withoutcompromising performance.

Vapour formation is commonduring heating of the rich TEG. Theconstruction of the APV Hybrid preventsimpacting of thermal performance byvapour buildup inside the exchanger andblanking of the heat transfer area.

The rich side usually containscompounds that cause fouling, leadingto a decrease in the outlet temperatureof the rich TEG. This is countered byoptimised plate corrugation patterns thatreduce the risk of fouling.

APV gasket plate heat exchangers may beused for cooling the lean TEG even with asmall temperature difference between thecooling medium and the Lean TEG. A lowinlet temperature of the Lean TEG into theabsorber is important as this improves theremoval rate of water out of the gas.

APV plate heat exchanger applications in typical gas dehydration process

The APV Paramine gasket solutionis the perfect choise if operatingtemperatures go beyond the typicalelastomeric gasket limits or whengasket compatibility is an issue for theuids being handled.

    NBR and EPDM elastomeric gaskets

are typically limited in temperature tobetween 115C (240F) and 165C(330F) depending on the materialand curing process used. The APVParamine gasket solution canoperate at temperatures as highas 210C (410F), depending onprocess conditions. APV Paraminegasket solution has proven to workvery well where sour gas has to betreated to remove Hydrogen Sulphide(H2S), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), CarbonMonoxide (CO), and/or CarbonSulphide (CS2).

In the gas sweetening process, gaskets areexposed to various components in addition

to the solvent, depending on the compositionof the treated gas. These componentsrange from H2S and CO2 to various organiccompounds such as aromatic compounds, asphaltenes and amine salts. The higher thetemperature, the more critical is the gasketselection. The best technical and commercialsolution will typically depend on a balancedevaluation of heat exchanger technology forparameters including lifetime, reliability andmaintenance costs.

APV gasketed plate heat exchangers areused as

Lean amine coolers Low temperature lean/rich interchangers

APV ParaWeld semi-welded plate heatexchangers reduce gasket exposure bynearly a factor of two compared to gasketedplate heat exchangers. The ParaWeld seriesincludes solutions with either conventionalgasket systems or the APV Paramine

    Gas Sweetening

gasket solution. The APV Paramine gasketsolution provides a superior plate-and-gasket

combination for rich/lean amine interchangerduties resolving conventional gasket lifetimeissues.

APV ParaWeld heat exchangers areparticularly suitable for use as

Amine coolers Medium to high temperature lean/rich

    Amine interchangers

When gasket exposure needs to be

minimised further, APV Hybrid welded plateheat exchanger is the technology of choice, offering a gasket-free plate pack.

APV Hybrid plate heat exchangers are usedfor duties such as:

Lean/rich interchangers (medium to hightemperature and/or high H2S load)

Sour gas coolers Amine re-boilers Acid condensers

APV Hybrid plate heat exchanger The APV Hybrid series is a range

of welded plate heat exchangerscombining highly efcient, gasket-free plate-pack and a strong vesselconstruction. It is designed to operateunder challenging process conditionswhere other heat exchangers maybe restricted due to temperatureand pressure limitations - enablingextremely low pressure drop if required. The exible design makes it verycompact, keeping weight and installed

space to a minimum. Inspection andcleaning are easily accomplished bysimply removing the housing covers. The unit is mechanically cleanable onthe tube side and plate side is easilyCIP-cleaned.

    APV Hybrid advantages include:

Flexible and compact design Openable design for easy inspection

Natural gas contains sour/acid gases, H 2S and CO 2, and water. Water is typicallyremoved with the glycol process. Acid gases (H 2S and CO 2 ) are most often removedby chemical absorption using an amine (MDEA, DEA, etc.), or by physical absorption(e.g. Sulnol or Selexol).
