Bluebird House Giving something back to the community has always been an important part of Southview Design. When presented with the opportunity to work with the BATC Foundation on a variety of projects, we gladly accept the challenge. The result is a collaborative effort among our colleagues in the building trades industry to give back by doing what we do best.”

What a great experience the Bluebird Project has been! Every time we’re involved with a philanthropic project we meet great new friends and trade partners, and we enjoy the benefits of giving back to the community we love.”

February 2016 Volume 2, Issue 1

Living large in small spaces may be the current trend, but the Bluebird House was clearly at its limits. With four medically fragile young men needing hospital level support, four bedrooms with medical equipment and lifts, two to three staff providing medical care, and families wanting to visit, the home’s 1,300 square feet was bursting at its seams. All four fellows couldn’t watch TV together because the space was too small. Several visitors at a time needed to come in shifts so there was enough room.

In addition, Danny Schmitt, the young man with the broad, heart-warming smile, got the last bedroom. With Danny’s bed and medical equipment, his room had

less than a couple feet of maneuverable space. Barely enough room for the medical support he required let alone to make it a room of his own.

Now, thanks to the BATC Foundation and contributions from partners, vendors and donors, when Danny celebrates his birthday on February 24th, there will be plenty of room for everyone! Under the guidance of Build Partner Vujovich Design Build, 400 sq. ft. of the Bluebird house was remodeled, an addition of 1,000 sq. ft. was built, and an outside deck of 300 sq. ft. can now be easily accessed out the patio door.

According to Diane Schmitt, Danny’s mom, everyone is enjoying the new living room. Everything is bright

and clean with plenty of room. “The men really like to sit by the windows and look out. Multiple families can enjoy the space at one time, which was really great at Christmas.”

Diane, as well as all the families, are very appreciative of the many people involved in the project. She said “Everyone who worked on the Bluebird House was so nice! A Letter from theExecutive Director

When we think about homelessness in Minnesota we often picture the men (and sometimes women) we pass at interstate off ramps or busy urban intersections, holding a sign that says “homeless veteran,” or “lost my job, need help.” We’d like to help them but you wonder if there isn’t a better way.

You don’t really want to encourage panhandling. You think maybe they’ll use the money you give them to buy a bottle instead of feed their kids. Unfortunately, these panhandlers have become the face of homelessness in Minnesota.

Recognizing the need to address the issue of homelessness in the Twin Cities, the BATC Foundation became an affiliate chapter of HomeAid America (www.homeaid.org) last April. Since then, I have been meeting with area service providers who work with the homeless to learn about their services and how the Foundation can best respond. Through that process we have identified a handful of local agencies who work with the homeless and who are in need of help.

In 2016, one of our first HomeAid projects will be to work with the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV). In partnership with Rebuilding Together Twin Cities, the BATC Foundation will be working to

rehab a home for veteran families in need of transitional housing. We are in the process of identifying a suitable property and hope to begin this project in the spring.

Unlike Minnesota, when I was in Las Vegas in mid-January to attend IBS, I was amazed at how visible homelessness is there. It is not unusual to see people “camped” in sleeping bags on the busiest of streets along the strip. Because of our climate, homelessness is hidden here – especially in the winter. It’s easy to ignore.

Your BATC Foundation is taking steps to help address this issue, but we’ll need your help. If you would like to make a donation of material or labor or be considered as the Build Partner for this or other 2016 projects, please contact me at [email protected] or call 651-697-7563. I’ll be happy to provide you with information about the requirements and benefits of being a Build Partner.

Featured Entertainment

PIANISTS FROM MINNESOTA, David Charles Eichholz and Ted Manderfeld have mastered the sophisticated nuances and ribald comedy that have made Las Vegas and Paris famous.

Together, this amazing duo perform a surprising mix of music and parodies that range from classic rock and country, to rap and show tunes. The key to their marathon of musical comedy, however, is the unabashed and completely liberated participation of audience members. Group toasts…or roasts, good natured ribbing of individual audience members put briefly under the glare of spotlights, and the firm, yet might we say gentle, recruitment of reluctant show participants which adds to the camaraderie that develops during a DEUCES WILD! Performance.

This Spring, the public has an exciting opportunity to help area families in need when they visit seven BATC Foundation Artisan Dream Homes during the Parade of HomesSM and Remodelers Showcase®

When visitors tour these high-end homes, they are asked to pay a minimal tax-deductible $5.00 admission fee at the door, which supports the BATC Foundation, the charitable arm of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities. The BATC Foundation works in partnership with others to revitalize our communities and create safe, quality, affordable housing for people in need.

This year, there are four outstanding new homes selected as BATC Foundation Artisan Dream Homes. These four homes use the latest trends in home building, home décor and design. The Parade of Homes including BATC Foundation Artisan Dream Homes, presented by the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, will open for touring

I joined the BATC Foundation Board to give back to the industry that I have been involved with for the past 25 years. Helping people is something that I have always wanted to do more of, but I haven’t found an avenue for it—I believe this is that opportunity.

I feel like being part of providing safe, affordable housing for those in need is a great way for me to fill some of the void with volunteer work that I feel is lacking on a personal level. An organization like the BATC Foundation, has a great mission to be involved in to help lift up the community and support those in need, with the people and resources that we have at our finger tips!

I’m excited to be on the Board to be able to both help in the decision-making to strengthen the BATC Foundation, as well as to get down to the nitty-gritty meeting our deserving recipients and rolling up my sleeves putting in lawns, painting or whatever may be needed. It is a wonderful mission to be able to support people and give them a safe and secure place to live. I’m excited about what we can accomplish this year. Kristin Rother

Being a member of the BATC Foundation Board of Directors allows me the opportunity to support useful projects to improve the lives of people who need help with safe, affordable housing. The Foundation believes actions speak louder than words and takes on challenging projects supported by a group of dedicated construction professionals and trade partners. The work is done with a sincere desire to improve the lives of others.

My personal goal for the Foundation is to help spread the word about the good works being accomplished. There are so many ways an individual or company can participate in these life changing projects. Good people do good things in the world. The BATC Foundation is an opportunity to do a great deal of good.
