Year One (Core Units) Unit 1- Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care Unit 2 Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care Unit 3- Health, Safety and Security Unit 4 Development Through the Life Stages Unit 5 Anatomy and Physiology Unit 6 Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care Unit 7 Sociological Perspectives for Health and Social Care Unit 8 Psychological Perspectives for Health and Social Care Year One (Optional Units) Unit 11 Safeguarding Adults and Promoting Independence Unit 14 Physiological Disorders Unit 30 Health Psychology Year 2 (Optional Units) Unit 9 Values and Planning in Health and Social Care Unit 10 Caring for Children and Young People Unit 12 Public Health Unit 19 Applied Sociological Perspectives Unit 20 - Promoting Health Education Unit 21 Nutrition for health and Social Care Unit 23 Complementary Therapies for Health and Social Care Unit 28 Caring for Older People Unit 29 Applied Psychological Perspectives Unit 39 Infection Prevention and Control Unit 40 Dementia Care. How will I learn? The course is divided between three teachers, one of whom will be your tutor. Class work will include Individual research, presentations, discussions, role- play, leaflets, posters, reports and displays. You will be developing your writing both in structured and unstructured formats, learning how to draw information from a wide range of sources and learning how to present this information in different ways. You will also have the opportunity to visit local care providers as well as learning from guest speakers. Work experience will form part of your programme. How will my work be assessed? All units will be assessed by a portfolio of assignments. The portfolio will consist of various tasks covering the Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria. The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care consists of eight mandatory units (providing 480 guided learning hours or 80 credits) plus optional units that provide for a further 600 guided learning hours (100 credits) or 180 credits for the completed qualification.

What skills will I need to be successful in this subject?

You will need highly developed organisational skills in order to manage the demands of this course. You need to be able to understand complex theoretical concepts and apply these to given situations. You will need to develop good research skills and the ability to use these effectively. You will need to be able to write clear and detailed answers to questions and be willing to use ICT to help you present information. Finally, you must have a genuine interest in Health and Social Care and a desire to succeed.

What are the entry requirements?

Five GCSEs at grade C or above which can include a Merit in a relevant BTEC Level 2 course. Students must have either GCSE English or Maths at grade C or above. What are the opportunities after this course for further/ education and employment

Success in this course would enable you to progress to Higher Education including Nursing, Midwifery, Youth Work, Health Promotion or Social Work. Alternatively, you may also go into apprenticeships within the Healthcare field.
