New research collaboration will tackle Greater Manchesterrsquosbiggest health challenges

A major new health research programme has been announced to tackle Greater Manchesterrsquos biggesthealth challenges as part of a pound135m national investment
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is funding the establishment of 15 Applied ResearchCollaborations (ARCs) across England to develop innovative research projects that will directly improvepatient care and treatment
The NIHR ARC for Greater Manchester will become part of Health Innovation Manchester from 1 October2019 bringing together researchers health and care providers patients and communities to deliver largeprogrammes of research
Over the next five years the ARC will focus research on helping older people to stay healthy for longersupporting people with mental health problems making better use of technology organising services toaddress local needs and ensuring services are sustainable This will be underpinned by expertise inevaluation and implementation science
Professor Ben Bridgewater Chief Executive of Health Innovation Manchester said The ARCrsquos researchactivity will be pivotal in finding new and better ways of preventing illness and delivering care ensuringthat Greater Manchester continues to be at the leading edge of health innovation care and treatmentrdquo
Research and Innovation Needs survey highlights key prioritiesfor Greater Manchester
The AHSN Network NHS England and the NIHR commissioned ComRes to conduct a survey that wouldprovide a detailed understanding of the innovation and research needs at local level across all AHSNsThe findings of this project were used to produce an initial statement of innovation and research needs ineach AHSN area
Workforce integrated care and optimising the use of digital technology were highlighted as key researchpriorities for Greater Manchester alongside mental health frailty and dementia
The new ARC will help to address these research needs and will focus on seven key areas Healthyageing digital health mental health organising care evaluation implementation science and economicsustainability

Patient Safety Collaborativeset out plans for 201920
Improving patient safety across the system andcreating an environment where safety initiativesand ideas can be implemented are at the heart ofGreater Manchester and Eastern CheshirePatient Safety Collaborativersquos (PSC) plans for thecoming year
The PSC strengthened by new teammembers has released its Local ImprovementPlan 201920 and set out its vision for improvingpatient safety across Greater Manchester andEastern Cheshire

Health and care champions celebrated at Greater Manchesterawards night
Eleven individuals and teams have been recognised and rewarded for the outstanding contribution theymake to the health and wellbeing of our communities
The Greater Manchester Health and Care Champion Awards 2019 took place on Thursday 4 July atManchesterrsquos Museum of Science amp Industry Nearly 250 guests heard about the tremendous work of over30 shortlisted candidates who every day make a huge difference and impact on the organisations theywork for the people they work with and the patients they serve
The award winners had been shortlisted from a total of nearly 400 nominations from across the NHS andother sectors including a school local authorities charities and care homes
Jon Rouse Chief Officer Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership said ldquoSo many peoplerepresenting all kinds of occupations and sectors came together at our award night and really recognisedand celebrated each otherrsquos work It was simply wonderful to hear how all of our shortlisted candidateshave impacted on the lives of so many people right across Greater Manchester I think we all feltincredibly proudrdquo

Dr Adrian Parry-Jones NIHR Clinician Scientistand Senior Lecturer in Vascular Neurology in theDivision of Cardiovascular Sciences at TheUniversity of Manchester has been awarded theMargaret Giffen Award by the Stroke Associationfor his research entitled lsquoTurning researchfindings into benefit for patients after itracerebralhaemorrhage (ICH)rsquo
This research aims to improve outcomes for ICHpatients by improving the treatments availableand the care given not only in the UK but aroundthe world
Previous work carried out by Dr Parry-Jonescombined three standard treatments for ICHpatients into the lsquoABC hyperacute care bundlersquoThis was introduced at three stroke units in theGreater Manchester area between 2015 and2017 Results have been promising At onehospital the number of deaths by 30 days afterICH was reduced saving around two lives everymonth The ABC care bundle will now beintroduced in hospitals across the NHS inEngland through the National StrokeProgramme

Eleven individuals and teams have been recognised and rewarded for the outstanding contribution theymake to the health and wellbeing of our communities
The Greater Manchester Health and Care Champion Awards 2019 took place on Thursday 4 July atManchesterrsquos Museum of Science amp Industry Nearly 250 guests heard about the tremendous work of over30 shortlisted candidates who every day make a huge difference and impact on the organisations theywork for the people they work with and the patients they serve
The award winners had been shortlisted from a total of nearly 400 nominations from across the NHS andother sectors including a school local authorities charities and care homes
Jon Rouse Chief Officer Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership said ldquoSo many peoplerepresenting all kinds of occupations and sectors came together at our award night and really recognisedand celebrated each otherrsquos work It was simply wonderful to hear how all of our shortlisted candidateshave impacted on the lives of so many people right across Greater Manchester I think we all feltincredibly proudrdquo

Dr Adrian Parry-Jones NIHR Clinician Scientistand Senior Lecturer in Vascular Neurology in theDivision of Cardiovascular Sciences at TheUniversity of Manchester has been awarded theMargaret Giffen Award by the Stroke Associationfor his research entitled lsquoTurning researchfindings into benefit for patients after itracerebralhaemorrhage (ICH)rsquo
This research aims to improve outcomes for ICHpatients by improving the treatments availableand the care given not only in the UK but aroundthe world
Previous work carried out by Dr Parry-Jonescombined three standard treatments for ICHpatients into the lsquoABC hyperacute care bundlersquoThis was introduced at three stroke units in theGreater Manchester area between 2015 and2017 Results have been promising At onehospital the number of deaths by 30 days afterICH was reduced saving around two lives everymonth The ABC care bundle will now beintroduced in hospitals across the NHS inEngland through the National StrokeProgramme
