White Space Defined
“A snapshot of the average year with the average patient
shows that healthcare providers spend approximately 100
minutes with their patient during that year. How much
health happens in those 100 minutes?...But what happens in
the remaining 525,600 minutes of that year? What happens
in the ‘White Space?’ I will tell you what I think happens –
that is where health is built, that is where people live.”

“White Space” & You, The Provider
• Technology in the “white space” does NOT mean
replace care but rather enhance treatment
– Lowering barriers to treatment
– Boosting Treatment as Usual
– Keeping up with patients
• What about the provider’s white space? Office?
Personal?
• More data, more productive, more patients?
22 11 September 2014
Not Just Technology But Motivation
• Design to motivate
• Just building it isn’t enough
• Must show the immediate value to the patient
• Explore behavior change models
23 11 September 2014
Harness the White Space
• White Space is vast and full of opportunity
• “Spend time with time wasters”: Where are the
inefficiencies?1
• Look for disruptive innovations in design
• Look for the overlaps between “the day in the life” of
people and technology
