We offer ‘tomorrow’s education today’ We’re excited and proud to be the first UTC in the UK to specialise in health care and health science, offering learning and career opportunities for young people like no other school or college in the region.

By combining academic study with real-life work projects, personal development activities, and career opportunities our young people will become well-rounded work-ready individuals. They will benefit

Why choose a Health Futures UTC education? from both qualified national curriculum teaching and putting their learning into practice in exciting, work-focused projects delivered by industry professionals.

We’re able to deliver this ‘tomorrow’s education today’ concept through a robust partnership of 23 major health and education organisations. Working together we develop young people who can meet the demand from employers for good qualifications, transferable skills and a professional attitude to work, whatever career they may eventually choose.

There’s no doubt that Health Futures UTC is a fantastic place for 14-19 year olds to

gain a unique top-class education, build confidence and explore a vast range of career and higher education pathways.

Our Vision Our vision is to provide a broad, inclusive health and science curriculum, delivered to the highest standards in partnership with our employer partners. This ensures our learners receive personalised, practical experiences, offering opportunities that enrich their experience above and beyond that normally expected and enhancing their employability.

A new approach to learningWe understand that whilst children and young people are individuals, each with their own learning styles and motivators, they all flourish when nurtured and encouraged to realise their full potential and achieve their ambitions. Health Futures UTC staff and partners are determined to meet these aspirations by using a variety of teaching methods, activities and technologies that provide a unique learning experience.

We will open up their young minds to the endless possibilities awaiting them in the world of work and education through a range of experiences, tasks, studies and personal development activities. Together, teachers and students will design and complete personalised study plans that will deliver sound qualifications and a perfect mix of knowledge, skills and experience to help every learner thrive in the workplace or university.

Gain recognised academic & technical qualifications To complement and consolidate their GCSE and A/AS Level studies, which will include all the core requirements of any Year 10/12 education, learners will undertake a range of employment-focused activities known as Technical Challenge Projects. Participation in these will enable all 14-19 year olds to study for Technical Qualifications relevant to age, ability and study topic. Details of subject options on offer are still being finalised but expected examples include:-

• Pharmaceutical Science

• Health & Social Care

• Clinical Healthcare Support

An inclusive educationA Health Futures UTC education provides for inclusive and supported learning at different levels depending upon chosen specialisms, age, stage and ability. Classroom studies and technical projects will be designed to ensure that learning is taking place in the right way, at the right level, and with the right support from teachers, partners, peers and mentors. We foster a culture of respect, encouragement and ambition that ensures the needs of all learners are sensitively and appropriately considered and managed. Parents and young people can be confident of an equitable provision for all students including Vulnerable Learners, those with Statements of Special Educational Needs, and those identified as Gifted & Exceptionally Able learners.

State-of-the-art technology Equipped with first-class technology and learning spaces specifically designed to enhance the student experience beyond the traditional, our campus provides the perfect setting in which to teach young professionals. To complement the use of e-learning in the classroom and to help put their knowledge into context, students will also be taught using technologies that can replicate a wide range of health care and health science environments.

Inspiring and stimulating their minds and senses, a simulated hospital ward with interactive computerised ‘patients’ and a high-tech visualisation suite are used to immerse students in virtual environments. The realistic reproduction of settings such as an operating theatre, road traffic incident or pathology laboratory brings sights and sensations not ordinarily accessible to young students.

Sports & wellbeing Taking advantage of a roof-top games area, fitness suite and gym, all young people will participate in regular Physical Education (PE) sessions for their personal health and wellbeing. Various aspects of fitness and wellbeing will also be integrated into learner’s core subjects, options and technical project work, at an appropriate level.

Gain the advantage through Technical Challenge Projects Teaching methods include the use of scenarios and technologies designed to reflect real-life workplace and community settings. Each project, which lasts 6 weeks, is designed and delivered in partnership by professionals from employer organisations and teaching staff.

Using a range of innovative methods and technologies learning takes place using a range of innovative methods and technologies designed to reflect workplace and community settings. This approach is intrinsically linked to classroom studies to combine academic, practical, technical, professional, business and social skills.

Development beyond the classroom

Life skills through enrichment To enhance learning and personal development each individual participates in a programme of activities known as Enrichment. These are an integral part of a UTC education offering students the opportunity to learn and share skills and experiences, and encouraging them to face new challenges. They may wish to undertake a Duke of York Award, volunteer to help a charity, explore a business initiative, become a Health Cadet, or get involved in art, music and drama community projects. The Enrichment Programme has a strong emphasis on the Personal, Social and Enterprise (PSE) aspects of a UTC education, building confidence, enhancing interpersonal skills and developing a sense of community and social awareness.

Building team spirit through Learning CompaniesTaking the traditional ‘House’ system to another level, Health Futures UTC has adopted a ‘Learning Company’ framework to encourage and support student’s progress and achievement. This concept helps expand learning and career interests through collaboration, promotes a sense of team spirit, and fosters a culture of equality, diversity, dignity and respect. Our Learning Companies are organised into three strands:-

• Health Science

• Health Management

• Health Practice

Personal Development Plans

that support individual learning and encourage

team working

Flexible career opportunities Although the UTC has a focus on health care and health science, students acquire robust qualifications and transferable skills universally welcomed by all employers and universities. Their unique education equips them for the world of work whatever career pathway they may eventually choose, and encourages them to explore opportunities they may not even know exist.

A world of career opportunities

Careers advice and support All Health Futures UTC students benefit from extensive careers advice and signposting to help them on their journey through education and into the world of work, higher education, apprenticeship or specialist training.

Whatever their eventual choice, everyone is given valuable access to career specialists and professionally qualified partners, all happy to share their first-hand knowledge and experience to help young people make important decisions about their life choices.

Integrated technical, practical and academic learning helps students thrive and develop their

employability

Page 9: Health Futures UTC Prospectus

Extensive health career opportunities For those who decide on a health focused career pathway, our partnership with major NHS organisations provides a valuable insight into the 350+ career opportunities offered by the UK’s largest employer. But even with that level of choice prospects are not limited to medical, care or laboratory roles. Another rich seam for employment is public health which focuses on preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting wellbeing. There is tremendous career diversity and opportunity across the entire health economy locally, nationally and globally, spanning the NHS, Local Authorities, charitable organisations, private businesses and community schemes.

The world of work

Not sure what career might suit you? You can find out much more about health career opportunities online, for example the NHS website introduces young people to the vast range of choices on offer and advises them on the qualities, skills and qualifications needed to follow their ambitions. With an A-Z of careers, videos, case studies and an interactive career-mapping tool designed to help you explore and consider the kind of work and roles you might enjoy, there’s plenty of practical information to be found at www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk and an insight into the vast array of public health careers at www.phorcast.org.uk

Transferable employment skills open up a world of

diverse and exciting careers

Page 10: Health Futures UTC Prospectus

The UTC working day We’ve designed our days to closely reflect a typical business day, with an 8:30am start and a 5:00pm finish Monday to Thursday and a 4:00pm finish on Fridays.

This helps prepare our students for the reality of employment expectations and routines. It also means there’s little or no homework as we aim to cover everything during the working day.

Dress codeIn keeping with world-of-work principles we’ve adopted a dress code rather than a traditional school uniform to help students look and feel like young healthcare professionals. To complement this code we’re also exploring a range of Health Futures UTC-branded clothing and products, some of which will be optional and some that will be required for certain activities – for example lab coats worn when conducting experiments. Further details will be published on our website.

Student supportThe Student Union at the University of Wolverhampton, which is affiliated to the National Union of Students, is extremely keen to work with our UTC to develop an appropriate Student Union offering to all our young people. This is a new venture that will help ensure students have a partnership role in their education, with opportunities to influence decisions and gain invaluable personal development skills. We are also exploring ways to bring the fun and discount benefits that Student Union members enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t 14 too young to specialise in a career-focused education? Not at all. There is a focus on health opportunities but these are set into context through traditional subjects such as English, Maths and the Sciences, which feature heavily in the curriculum and provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue any career or higher education pathway.

Students will also have the opportunity to develop their social, business, technology, enterprise and management skills. These are assets valued by all employers and universities.

There’s a school of thought that suggests children flourish when encouraged to explore and express possibilities that occur to young minds. They’re known to especially benefit from creative learning and collaborative working at a young age. The UTC approach to education reflects these ideas and taps into the imagination and inventiveness often found in younger learners. An interesting video explaining this theory can be found at http://youtu.be/zDZFcDGpL4U

Do I have to choose a career in health? No, although there are hundreds of different career choices across health care and health science, a Health Futures UTC education will provide young people with excellent academic and vocational qualifications as well as real-life employment experiences, all of which can be transferred to any career path you eventually embark upon.

Do students have to sit an entrance exam or pay any fees? No. Health Futures UTC is a non-selective provider of free education. Admissions Policy criteria, which are not based upon educational prowess or examination results, are used as part of the allocation process.

More FAQs continue to be published on our website.
